its ok just don’t do it again :). Just gets annoying having a thread of gifs you can’t get rid of. Even more so when its a game thread which this thankfully isn’t.
I could see him getting traded as a part of a package though depending on how some of our minor league options are doing and like every time we talk about trades it seems how the third base situation is going. Is Trumbo playing adequate there? Cause obviously if he can’t play there at all his value for us deminishes much more.
Problem is, we don't have any realistic options ready if we trade him mid-season.
If Izturis is healthy, which is always a big if, he is the only decent option we have at the position.
Andrew Romine might be a reach, but he’s as ready as he’ll ever be. He’s just as solid defensively, but the question is his bat. He’s fast, really fast, but he’s not a great hitter. Romine can handle playing shortstop at the major league level, but if we plan on going deep into the playoffs, is he a guy you’d trust at such an important position as shortstop in the heat of a pennant race?
Well if a trade is made the SS responsibilities would fall to Izturis and likely Romine maybe Armarista. Bat would be a concern mostly with Romine and Armarista at the MLB level but defense would be solid. I think if Izturis could stay healthy for most of the season his bat would be adiquate and what we lose in speed we have in the younger players with unproven bats.
Im not saying we will trade him and if we did it wouldn’t be early on probably. Just saying its more of a possibility if he isn’t extended before the season.
Aybar isn’t a good enough player that we need to worry about locking him up long-term. He’s good enough, but I wouldn’t be thrilled if we signed him to anything like the Kendrick deal.
I linked to an explanation of the “correct” use of that term, which is probably misused so often (even by high level talking heads on television and such) it no longer means what it used to mean. At any rate, I thought some of you would be interested. Short version: begging the question is a form of circular logic. Example: God exists because the bible says so.
I don’t mean to diss on moralesforpres by any means. I only learned about this recently myself. Peace out.
His bat isn’t consistent enough for me and he does not have the power upside of HK. Aybar is not someone you pay a lot of coin. HK is enough better that it makes sense to lock him up. It is a fine line, but Aybar falls below that line and HK is above it. Pretty handily.
Elvis signed up for his three arbitration years. This is Erick’s last arb year and two years of free agency. Those are more expensive years.
Maybe 3/$21 is reasonable. $6 million/$7 million/$8 million. Still seems steep to me. I’d cut bait and go with Segura or a one-year stop gap or get a young guy via trade.
The problem is, Andrus is not getting paid market value, and therein lies the problem with your case. If Andrus were a free agent, he could fetch a deal similar to Jimmy Rollins in the 3+ year, $30M range.
You can’t be serious when you say that Aybar isn’t worth anything north of 3/$14.5. Aybar certainly has his flaws, but he’s a player who should be getting paid at least $7M annually.
I’m not a big fan of his, but he’s been a solid glove and an above average hitting SS. Between him and Howie, I really don’t see them as all that different. Except for Howie’s HR numbers. Howie certainly comes off more articulate (therefore ‘smarter’), but that’s highly confounded by the language difference. Besides, if you’re not a pitcher or catcher, how smart do you really have to be to play the game? As long as you’re not making 3rd outs trying to steal 3rd base in one-run games (looking at you, Torii!). Plus, all their WARs are pretty much the same and neither has done much in the playoffs. So I’m genuinely curious why folks seem happy to let him walk.
He pushes the aggressive to the point of being reckless base-running. Especially for the faster guys. Vlad and Torri set the standard for bone-headed plays. Aybar just has one-foot in that category.
he’ll command at least 4/40 on the open market. He’ll be a free agent shortstop looking to get signed for his age 29-32 seasons. He’s one of the best non-locked up shortstops and he’ll be the best one available next offseason.
Maicer is also a FA after the season, meaning both our SS playing big league guys are gone. At this point, if Segura keeps progressing, then trying to sign 32 year old Maicer to continue his utility IF role for one more year is a lot more reasonable than signing the best free agent SS.
I think the only way we end up keeping Aybar is if he takes a large hometown discount: 2/20 or so, or if Segura has a horrible year or gets injured.
If Segura starts off on fire with the Inland Empires
and gets at least a little bit of experience in Arkansas, maybe he could get a cup of coffee in the bigs. But that’s probably a stretch, Aybar is such a reliable and not terribly expensive option at SS it would most likely make Segura trade bait. Howie’s locked in at 2nd, Vernon locked in at left-hopefully the most overpaid bench player), Trout in left, Bourjos in center. I really like the idea of Trumbo in RF…
It is very uncomfortable not having a proven shortstop behind Aybar if he gets hurt and not to sign him for another year is a rolling of the dice. His fielding is among the best in the majors but his hitting is somewhat questionable to say the least. But it would be financially not responsible to not get him sign for next year as well as this year. For whatever reason the Angel management has in not signing him for another season beyond 2012 doesn’t make sense to the average baseball Angel Fan. I for one like the not giving of more than 2 or 3 year contracts because it is going to be good for baseball and maybe stop some of the moronic owners from spending more money than they need too. The players are overpaid and the owners are so overpaid it isn’t even funny anymore. No player, with the exception of Sandy Koufax and Nolan Ryan, are worth more than a million dollars a year. Both these players successfully put fans in the seats everytime they got on the mound to pitch. Ryan last couple of years, every start no matter where, the house was full. From Anaheim to New York, thousands of fans came to the games. The same can be said about Koufax. Even game start at Dodger Stadium it was 56.912 paid fans and some standing to watch him pitch. And on the road it was even worst to try and get seats, from San Francisco to New York to Atlanta fans came by the hundreds of thousands to standing room only crowds to watch Sandy pitch, because by that time you didn’t know when his next no hitter was coming. Hall of Fame players from Aaron to Mantle and even older players like Williams said that in facing him it was next to impossible to see what pitch was coming next. A 100mph fastball or a 74mph curve and his changeup was so far out of the baseball realm that players after striking out on his changeup would look out and just shake their heads wondering what was coming next. Johnny Roseboro, Sandy’s catcher, during his perfect game said all the players at bat knew what was coming next and they still couldn’t hit it. Both Sandy and Nolan were Rembralts to watch pitch a game. Every pitch was building to the next and Aaaron said about Koufax, when asked what he would do is Koufax started headhunting like Don Drysdale, stated “Retire”. When he left the game the mold was broken for left-handers as was it for right-handers when Ryan left. The Angels pitching today is one of the best in the majors and they could become the next world series winners if everythiing comes together…..

Amarista
Hasn’t played short regularly since he was 18 in a Dominican summer league. Not sure why you feel his defense there would be solid in the bigs.
dmhead - February 12, 2012
Let him play great this year to try to win a contract
and then let him walk.
Decent skills with no brain.
tolbs1010 - February 11, 2012
See how Segura pans out, hope Aybar plays hard for a contract, mix together for one nice problem to have.
5thStarter - February 11, 2012
I'm still hoping they get something done with Aybar, although it obviously depends on the $ he wants (I don't know specific numbers right now)
I really like Segura, but I don’t think it’s a lock that he is MLB ready in 2013.
I have almost no faith in the internal options, and the FA market is pretty unimpressive as well(especially with option possibilities on some of them)
And if Segura IS ready, the Angels have a really good trade chip in Aybar.
~MMP~ - February 11, 2012
Play the year
Aybar isn’t a good enough player that we need to worry about locking him up long-term. He’s good enough, but I wouldn’t be thrilled if we signed him to anything like the Kendrick deal.

But, don't trade him either
He is the best option we have at SS, so unless things go really badly, I wouldn’t trade him at midseason either unless it’s for an upgrade.
