Every Breath You Take by The Police was the #1 Song in the USA the day Howie was born.
-
Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant was #2 (obviously should be Howie’s walk-up song in the 2-hole)
- Proving that disco was hard to kill, What A Feeling (Theme from Flashdance) by Irene Cara was #3.
-
Never Gonna Let You Go by Sergio Mendes was #4 (barf)
-
Too Shy by Kajagoogoo was #5... so if you were born in 1984 your parents hooked up to this.
-
Return of the Jedi was the #1 movie in the USA the week Howie was born!
-
Trading Places, the best film for and against Capitalism ever made, ranked 2nd.
-
Superman III (the terrible one with Richard Pryor) was 3rd.
- "Would you like to play a game?" War Games (Ronald Reagan claimed this movie is the reason we all didn’t nuke each other, mildly important in world affairs if not cinema history) was 4th.
-
James Bond was still kicking ass in Octopussy at #5.
- He doesn't like to be called Howie as his given name is Howard.
- His hobby is photography but if he owns a Leica he never posts photos from it.
What a great way to start the week!
Nice compilation
I’m amazed the top 5 movies are all fairly memorable. How often is that true 30 years later??

It is entirely possible that you will love The Police

Rally Manatee - January 8, 2012
Like The Police
Not wild about that song.

What's awesome is that
couples will walk down the aisle to it at their wedding without realizing it’s about a psycho boyfriend stalking his ex.

But the movie did have Keanu Reeves and his academy award winning performance
What an actor.

Nahhh, I think everyone knows it's about a psycho dude
The refrain is pretty creepy. Not like ‘Born in the USA’ where everyone had it wrong and seemed to think it was blindly patriotic song when it was anything but.
Theren86n02 - January 9, 2012
Bruce would argue it is a very patriotic song.....
It was a song demonizing the poor treatment of veterans returning home, it is a song that supports our country and damns the system that has kept its population oppressed….. sorry for the rant, huge boss fan
ItCouldHappen - January 9, 2012
Springsteen

ouch......
Bob Dylan is just the springsteen for hipsters
ItCouldHappen - January 9, 2012
good comeback. best i ever heard was “Springsteen for Mensa Hillbillies”.
Rev Halofan - January 9, 2012
lol nice
As much as I love Bob, he infuriates me. Maybe its his consistent political apathy (based on No Direction Home he never really went to any political rallys about the issues he sang about, and as he said, his songs werent topical), his percievable and unending arrogence, his strange victoria’s secret commercial or his just lack of ability to put on a live show anymore (my buddies saw him, apparantly it was one of the most uninspired concerts ever).
Bob Dylan is to singer songwriters what Manny Ramirez was to power hitters, a pure talent with a wacky brain and a sometimes poor work ethic…… but when manny sent one deep and Bob Dylan sings Hard Rains a Gonna Fall, the best reaction is to shut up and observe.
ItCouldHappen - January 9, 2012

I’m so emo I just listen to my tears fall.
Rally Manatee - January 9, 2012
Underrated comment.
LAASurfin - January 9, 2012
Disagree. "Born in the USA" was a bitter song...long way from being patriotic...
The way that the Reagan administration co-opted that song was pathetic and infuriating.
Jack Frostt - January 9, 2012
some of us dont consider reagan to be patriotic
I consider bitterness to be a part of patriotism, at the end of the day what were the founding fathers outside of some really bitter dudes, what were minute men outside of bitter colonists….
ItCouldHappen - January 9, 2012
The thing that bothers me about Bruce is that he didn't mind that people misunderstood it
As an artist, there’s really not a whole lot you can do once you release a song, but I don’t remember ever reading an interview with him in which he acknowledged it was being misinterpreted by jingoists. It was only years afterward that I heard what the song was really about. It’s hard to hear the lyrics when there are flags flapping in your face.
yeswecan - January 9, 2012
have you ever heard how springsteen originally recorded the song?
originally it was just meant to be his guitar and his voice, and it has a much different effect, look up the live in NY version or the tracks version. In many concerts that was the style he used in performance and it has a very different effect.
Furthermore, Springsteen did sue reagan for using his song (or threatened to sue until Reagan pulled the song from his campaign), I think thats him trying to distance the song from the jingoists
ItCouldHappen - January 9, 2012
Agree....I heard the demo and the tone is quite different...
I think the way the album cut was produced led to possible misinterpretation……but anyone who actually listens to the lyrics, or just reads them for that matter couldn’t possibly think it was a patriotic song…. (hope no copyright issues for only one verse)
Just the first verse here:
Pretty hard to see that as patriotic.
Jack Frostt - January 9, 2012
yeah i heard the demo
Apparently he didn’t think that tone fit the song, otherwise that’s how he would’ve recorded it. Whether purposefully or not, he really didn’t do much to quash the misinterpretation. In fact, arguably he made it worse.
yeswecan - January 10, 2012
So what about him forcing Reagan to abandon the song?
what about him generally performing the song in the accoustic version in most tours following the 1984 tour, ncluding the most famous live recording of the song on the Live in NY album
ItCouldHappen - January 10, 2012
Too little, too late
The Reagan thing had everything to do with their politics and not the song. Bruce knew what was going on. I understand why he didn’t do anything — hell, if my album were suddenly selling gazillions I wouldn’t exactly want to get in the way, either.
yeswecan - January 10, 2012
Tough Crowd
man hard for springsteen to make it right…. I never heard Neil Young apologize when Rockin in the Free World got misinterpreted….. Still waiting on Guthrie’s scolding criticism for our terrible jingoistic love of “this land is your land.” Maybe, just maybe, Springsteen liked the way it sounded. To say it was a monetary thing is a bit off, I mean the guy has always wanted his songs to sound a specific way in terms of time and place, this mentality led to him giving up the right to numerous hits so that other artists could use them (Because the Night, Fire), because he couldnt make the perfect sound for them
ItCouldHappen - January 10, 2012

5thStarter - January 10, 2012
"This land is your land" and Springsteen
Interesting that he (with others) sang the original version of that song at Obama’s inauguration, with the more anti-capitalist verses reinserted.
Theren86n02 - January 10, 2012
Well from one person who loves The Clash to another one who does...have an interesting aside ;
You mentioned about not having read quotes about Springsteen and the misinterpretation of the song…..I think it’s really interesting that Joe Strummer actually defended Springsteen in an interview he did. Sorry I can’t tell you the publication or the year….My brother told me about the quote. I didn’t read it myself but just let me say that my brother is a very reliable source when it comes to this kind of thing.
Anyway, Strummer basically said (paraphrasing) that alot of people don’t like Springsteen (presumably people in the more edgy side of the Rock World etc..) but that they just don’t know. That Springsteen is great….That didn’t surprise me knowing Joe’s background, being really into 50’s Americana and early rock n’ roll….
To me Springsteen isn’t as consistently great as my favorites. He’s not in my Top 5 artists list, but at his best he’s up there with the others. I think The River is one of the greatest songs ever written/recorded… Just incredible.
Jack Frostt - January 9, 2012
I too love the Clash
And if you remember after Strummer died Bruce led the tribute band at the grammys exclaiming that “This one’s for joe” before launching into an interesting London Calling accompanied by Stevie Van Zandt and Elvis Costello and a few others……
Bruce has always been up on the punk scene especially the rock-a-billy inspired punk scene, bringing Mike Ness on stage in LA is evident of this, as is bringing Dropkick up in Boston, covering I Wanna Be Sedated in concert. The man is at his heart a punk.
As for the patriotic nature of Born in the USA, I find the song to be patriotic because it isnt a jingoist anthem, but rather tries to paint a real picture of life in 1980s America as Reaganomics was destroying the working class and veterans were coming home to find nothing left. Yeah its not a song saying how great America is but rather a song lamenting about how America has fallen from its great potential and great expectations
ItCouldHappen - January 9, 2012
Yeah, I loved that "London Calling" tribute to Joe...
And Dave Grohl was up there too with Bruce and Elvis.

No more Carlton Banks, no more Premium, signed El Hombre, inked that douche CJ Wilson (but he’s our douche now), Hawkins, Ianetta. And we’ve extended HK. Kowbell is getting better, now we just gotta extend the Admiral, Haren and Santana and this will officially be the bestest off season in Halo history. And Trading Places kicked major ass. Superman III, not so much.

halofolife - January 8, 2012
I have almost forgotten about Napoli now
I am so glad they locked Howie up. He’s one of my favorites. If Aybar is also extended, we’ll have a pretty solid infield for years to come. Not to mention the sweet 1-2 punch of Weaver and Wilson that we have locked up for a while, and 2 excellent outfielders in Bourjos and Trout. It seems like not too long our future looked scary, but that sure turned around fast.
THANK YOU ARTE!

But I bet he’ll fill in nicely in the “chunky Italian catcher with bad facial hair” roll. Maybe he can even get some huge, cliched tattoos to slowly consume his arms too.

The cockles of my heart are all warm. I've seen how lucky we are.
I was in Murrieta the other week, Padre territory, and it being the Temecula valley, I had a choice for entertainment of going to a mall or watching sand grow. The mall’s sports gear shops, and the team gear section of JC Penny was all replica jerseys and jersey t-shirts of Adrien Gonzalez, Jake Peavey (still?), Heath Bell and Mat Latos. It made me sad for Padres fans. Those sand colored shirts are also just sad.
Still, it’s so great to be able to sign FAs, but even better to be able to keep guys like Weaver and HK47 instead having to let them go as soon as they develop and we get attached to them.
gitchogritchoffmypetis - January 8, 2012
You must have been at the Promenade Mall in Temecula.
The sports shops here really do blow. I live in Temecula myself, and am surrounded by Pads fans. However, it could be worse, I could be surrounded by Doyer fans. I have yet to be shanked or beaten once due to my Halo allegiance. still, there are quite a few Halo fans here as well, since there are many OC transplants.
halofolife - January 8, 2012
Yep.
Rally Manatee, Ms. Manatee, baby Manatee and I went there for the Red Robin. The one in Santa Barbara closed. Santa Barbara’s a big pile of shank wielding Doyer fans and a surprising number of Giants fans who move here for the University…. they are far less annoying though.

His career OBP is...... .329
I like Howie/Howard. He seems like a decent person, cares about winning, and clearly likes playing for us in Anaheim.
But he’s also pretty mediocre at times. A career .329 is underwhelming and he didn’t do much in his playoff appearances. He’s not awful by any means and I do like that we have an asset locked up for four years at a price where we could move him if necessary.
Robviously - January 9, 2012
His Career Comps at BR Certainly Raise Some Eyebrows
And not in the good way (one of Aybar’s comps is Yuni Betancourt!).
But I think that as baseball returns to normal, more or less, Howard Kendrick’s palce as a solid contact hitter with a bit of punch will put him up there. Don’t expect another Jeff Kent any time soon, and if you look at the 2B market out there, there are maybe a 6-8 that are what I’d call “good”. Kendrick is one of them for sure.

I have to disagree
I feel that Trading Places promoted capitalism more then it was against it. By Eddie Murphy and the other guy gaming the system and kicking ass together it promoted that with the proper training and understand of any system you will win it with a little help form your friends. The orange market and the onset of that hurricane that never hit was a metaphor for the social tensions of the time in North New York.
Either way PARTY AT HOWIES HOUSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BYOB

Some great 80s metal was made that year including Dio-Holy Diver, Thin Lizzy-Thunder & Lightning, Iron Maiden-Peace of Mind…to name a few! I think Howie’s theme song should be Thunder & Lightning.

That list took me back to childhood
I was eight, we just got cable (thanks to our neighbors), and all of those songs were on MTV about once per hour. For the next several years, it seems like those movies, plus Back to the Future and Fast Times, were on The Movie Channel in a solid rotation.
Those were good times.
JeffJoiner - January 9, 2012
Nice to see Howie get an extension.
I still see that he has room to grow seeing that he is only 28 years old. His improvement with the glove and finally rising to the capability with the bat is encouraging. He still has better years to come.

Just seems like that’s something his lady-friends should be taking care of. Maybe we should say they ‘locked him up for 4 years’, or ‘gave him a long-term contract’. I really don’t want to think of the FO giving Howie an extension.
