Ryan Doumit is a free agent, is only 30 years old, and has a proven track record of offensive success. Did I mention he is a catcher? I am surprised his name is not brought up when discussing offseason acquisitions. Thoughts?
Here are his stats from bbref
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/doumiry01.shtml
Ryan Doumit is a well below average defensive catcher who has been a consistent visitor to the DL.. There is no chance in hell that Scioscia would give his blessings on this sort of signing or JD

It would be a step up, assuming he can stay off the DL. The guy I would really like to see behind the dish (besides Conger) would be Ramon Hernandez from Cincy. He’s a FA too.
I was thinking he was Type B for some reason. That would be a little costly. I wouldn’t mind that offense though or him showing Conger and Wilson the ropes.
I don’t watch a lot of Pirates games, so I was wondering why a guy who could possibly replace our weakest link wasn’t being discussed.
I was just looking at his stats and figured if he split time with Conger, that would be a big offensive boost to the club (assuming Mathis is non-tendered).
Are we even that certain that Premium will be non-tendered?
i’d love to think so, but for some crazy reason I don’t. I expect to see him behind the dish, being our opening day catcher, in all of his Dadgum glory.
Doesn’t get to call all the shots anymore. If DiPoto doesn’t sign a catcher and non-tenders Mathis, then there’s really no way Conger doesn’t start the season with the big league club.
Although solid offensively

Hmmmm Sounds like what some were saying about Napoli last year...............

Good call
He’s 35, wouldn’t get more than a 1 or 2 year deal, and could mentor Conger.
JeffJoiner - November 4, 2011
Yep, Hernandez should be on DiPoto's shortlist.
But he’s also a Type A — so that’s a lot to give up for a rental catcher.

The downside to a better-than-expected-but-still-not-good-enough season
No protected pick to assuage another overpriced helping of mediocre baseball this year.

Ah good call

You think Cincy will offer Arbitration?
Bozo's1000son - November 4, 2011
I was wondering the same thing.
BigGame48 - November 4, 2011
I doubt Dipoto will waste a draft pick on Ramon Hernandez
mattwelch - November 5, 2011
he is an NL catcher
they are no better then a pitcher

I'm not a Doumit fan personally. He plays really poor defense behind the plate and hasn't been able to stay healthy.
That said, he would be an upgrade over 2 of our 3 catchers.
~MMP~ - November 4, 2011
He's solid offensively
until Hatcher tinkers with his swing mechanics, then we’ll be looking at a clone of Jeff Mathis…without defensive ability.
mustard_man - November 4, 2011
In other words,
A perfect clone of Jeff Mathis

Exactly

So the consensus is that he sucks defensively

Total waste to spend money on a catcher this offseason
It’s time to let Conger get consistent playing time behind the plate.
Howie the Halo - November 4, 2011
I get the impression Conger goes back to AAA for a while
Whether its right or not, seems from Scioscia’s quotes that his defense was just not acceptable to handle our staff right now.
ihearhowie2.0 - November 4, 2011
Sosh

Howie the Halo - November 5, 2011
If we do end up going after a catcher
I’d rather go with Ramon Hernandez. He’s older but more reliable injury-wise and on defense.
