From the Angels site on Jeff Mathis' frustrating season
“I think it had a bigger effect on our pitchers,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Jeff’s defensive presence was something that has been very settling to a lot of our pitchers. You lose that continuity for some time. Mike [Napoli] and Bobby Wilson filled in and played well, but Jeff’s a special catcher from the defensive side.
That quote makes me want to insert the /facepalm ASCII character.
I wouldn’t really say Scioscia is an unintelligent man, he has done some very smart baseball moves over his time with the Angels, but that just screams of stupidity.
a manager to be fully supportive of his players, as long as they’re on the team, but it worries me greatly to see the amount, and extent, of the praise that Mathis receives from the Soth. On the one hand, I hope it’s directly correlated to the depth of his struggles – the more he does, the more praise and support he gets (a manager should protect his players). On the other, I worry that it is genuine and honest, and that the Soth truly believes what he’s saying, and that this team will be doomed to more of this craptacular ineptitude for the next couple of seasons.
Please, Mr. Reagins, take this broken and dangerous toy away from your manager. He should not be allowed to play with it any longer.
If Mathis and/or Rivera are back in significant roles next season I won’t be spending a dime or paying attention to Angels baseball. I’m the icon for a loyal fan having picked all my teams in the early 70’s and I never wavered even through much worse teams. This is different as they are doing things that make zero sense and lead nowhere with players that will never be more than marginal.
might fall in love with the Twins or Rays. Teams that play hard, solid fundamental baseball like the Angels once did. I guess the bottom line is watching marginal, dim-witted, lazy players is just not fun.
I’m quite sure that by next April I will have no recollection of 2010. Similarly, I can’t recall any of the seasons in the ‘90s. It’s a facility all longtime Angel fans not currently institutionalized have developed.
1) He’s under team control for only two more years anyway.
2) 2011 looks like it’ll be as bad or worse than this year — the major problems have no hope of being fixed by anyone in the farm (the best prospects are all in the low minors).
3) He won’t get a chance to pad his win totals with the crappy outfield the Angels are running out there.
4) He’s a Scott Boras client, so he won’t come back because the front office will refuse to pay him what he’ll fetch on the open market. Or, Mark Teixeira, part 2.
Sell him and get a mess of kids so the Angels can compete in 2012.
I must admit it is a thought to be pondered, although I'm not on that train yet.
The Borassss thing is worrisome; same with Morales. But possibly more than anyone else, I think Jared Weaver really wants to play in Anaheim.
We ought to do a thorough evaluation of the true quality and projected timing of the pitching prospects we have coming up who might be capable of assuming Weaver’s spot in the rotation…..I’m sure the Angels’ front office has.
Regarding the lack of run support, Escobar went through the same thing for a couple of years. I seem to remember that Santana also had some episodes, though not to the degree of either Escobar or Weaver.
Jered is a homegrown southern California guy and he is one of the few successes of our minor league system. I’m just too fond of him and so are most Angel fans.
if we’re tanking at the deadline next year, weaver will have TONS of value toa team that gets him for the run and the following year. we need to see what happens in 2011 before we dismantle this team entirely.
how frustrated the pitchers are to be Angels this year? I haven’t heard a peep from them in the press though which is a real testament to their professionalism. The Rangers starting pitchers look like stars because they get to face the Angels, A’s and Mariners so much .
I'm tellin ya, Mathis is going to be non-tendered.
The Kid Korea is going to be given every opportunity to catch next season.
I have to keep telling myself this. If I say it enough it is bound to come true, right?
but
I think Sosh prefers catchers that can’t hit. So in 2011-2012 we’ll all be complaining about Conger not getting playing time even with him hitting .280 with 20 HRs and 85 RBIs while being in Top 5 for GG at C while Mathis is still sucking.
I think the front office will look at paying 1.5 million or so for a .190 hitting catcher with no secondary hitting skills and a poor throwing arm, and decide to pass. When money is involved, that’s when the rubber meets the road.
The Angels were faced with precisely the same situation last off-season, and they still elected to tender him a contract. After doing it once, I would be disappointed but not surprised to see them do it again.
But he will now be getting even more expensive. They thought they would get away with paying him $700K. Now, they know they will be paying him at least $1.3 million in arbitration, possibly more, and hopefully will be more cautious. With Bobby Wilson and Hank Conger available to catch for $400K each, and a lot of players on the roster due raises in arbitration, I think it is much more likely that they will want to bank the extra million and cut Mathis loose.
Let's not forget we played hardball w/him on his first contract
Payback is a bitch. This guy could be a perennial cy young contender if his team scored 4 runs a game. Or if he could pitch in the bizzaro world and give up negative runs.
All joking aside, seriously, why the fuck is Mathis playing on this team.
I don’t buy the soth man crush. But omg Idk what to think anymore!!! “I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!!” " letigra, Ferrari, blue steel, they’re all the same look!!!"
Fuck I feel like pulling my hairs out
Cannot help but wonder: Did Jered Weaver sleep with a teammate’s sister or something? It’s like the almost-total lack of run support is intentional. Someone has to know something about this.
Game day = "Groundhog Day"

For not throwing a shutout. He does, we win 1-0. This whole slump is all his fault becuase he knows the offense is bad and yet he still allows runs.
