Here, let me save you the trouble of reading this.
First, Napoli is making $3.6 million. That's a reasonable price to pay for a guy who hits 26 home runs...But Napoli will be in his second season of arbitration this winter, meaning he'll probably get a sizeable bump, probably doubling his salary.
First, Napoli will be in his third season of arbitration (he was a Super Two and so he gets four arbitration years). I'd also like to point out that the Angels have been paying EIGHTEEN MILLION dollars a year to a guy with home run totals of 21, 22, and 21 (with 9 games to play) in the last three seasons-- and that's with 44% more plate appearances than Mike Napoli. Oh, and that squiggly red line under the word "sizeable"? That's your spellchecker telling you you misspelled it.
It would be one thing if Napoli were a good enough catcher to play that position every day, but he's got an unreliable arm and he's too bulky to block the plate well.
Yes, Napoli is a terrible, terrible defensive catcher. This was just a funny claim I've never heard before. He's too big to block the plate! It's like saying, that door is too tall for me to walk through.
Continued after the jump.

Look deeper into Napoli's numbers and you realize a lot of what he does is flash without substance...His RBI total -- 67 -- is paltry given all those home runs.
Flash without substance is, like, a guy who hits .189 even though everyone thinks he looks great in a uniform. Look, Napoli's most common spot in the lineup coming into 2010 was eighth. The guys hitting in front of him do not get on base. The guys hitting behind him do not get on base. If I'm smarter than Mark Saxon, who am I going to pitch around? Well, Napoli has walked over 12% of the time with runners in scoring position this year, compared to just 6% of the time with the bases clean. Besides, a .250 hitter going 19-for-105 w/RISP is just not improbable enough to be statistically significant, even isolated from other factors.
In other words, Napoli is a "tweener," too inconsistent strictly as a hitter, not reliable enough as a catcher.
No one really knows what "consistency" actually means, but I'll bite anyways. Sure, Mike Napoli is not the greatest hitter ever. He's also a bad defensive catcher. But you see, the average catcher slugs .382. Mike Napoli slugs .491. He is better at slugging than every other catcher in baseball this year. He's also one of the best hitters the Angels have on the roster. This more than makes up for poor defense. Ten minus five is still greater than zero, and even zero is greater than Jeff Mathis.
My opinion [that Napoli will be traded] didn't change when Napoli hit the home run off the Texas Rangers C.J. Wilson that tied Wednesday's game 1-1 in the seventh inning.
Really? Because I watched this game too (albeit not from a complimentary press box), and I thought just the opposite. That "mere" solo home run improved the team's win probability from 37% to 59%. It was the Angels' only run of the night. I also seem to remember the Rangers' winning run coming across in the 11th on a passed ball by the Angels' resident defensive catching genius (who is at least not so bulky that he can't block the plate). Would you like more substance with that flash?
Okay, so trading Mike Napoli might not be the worst idea in the world. I can imagine scenarios in which it could work out. None of the above are the reasons to do it, though. The fact that people are thinking about it this way gives me no confidence that the Angels will get a fair return on Napoli. You're nuts if you're dreaming of Jacoby Ellsbury or something. Probably not as nuts as Mark Saxon, though.

I wonder what we could get if we traded Mark Saxon.

Mark Saxon to the Boston Red Sox for Jerry Thornton and a Pundit To Be Named Later?
Suboptimal - September 25, 2010
probably
a bag of balls and some cheap bats.

Did people not read the question
Why is everyone voting to see Napoli LESS?
ryanfea - September 25, 2010
If you read the questiuon too quickly, you miss the meaning.

question
angelslogic - September 25, 2010
I'm guessing that Mark Saxon must have at least 76 different SBN account IDs to vote with
otherwise there’s no fucking way
Quad Fin Rider - September 25, 2010
I wondered the same thing...
angelsfan7 - September 25, 2010
It's been widely panned in forums, but I'm glad you gave Saxon's idiocy a formal response.
If people seriously think that Napoli’s biggest deficiency as a hitter is his poor record w/ RISP, then why not just work with what ya got? Move him up in the order — give him more opportunities to lead off an inning. The #5 hitter gets a lot of leadoff opportunities over the course of games, and Napoli has a career OPS of 1.007 from the five spot. He’s thrived there in previous seasons.
One could even make a reasonable case for Naps in the two-spot. Excepting this season, he likes to take his walks, and he takes a lot of pitches. Like Abreu, he gives runners in front of him a chance to run, and he can punish a distracted pitcher’s mistake.
I think Napoli has tried too hard this season to compensate for a collectively flagging offense. You put more offense around him, and put him in the mix, rather than at the back of pack, and I think we’ll see greater production overall.

he also swings and misses a lot
which can still help a stolen base threat.
I’d like to see Napoli in the 2 spot too. The team hasn’t utilized much bunting out of that spot early in the games, so why not let the big dog get as many chances as possible to eat. So long as it’s not Abreu hitting in front of him, any of the other leadoff options with speed could benefit from having a guy like Mike hitting behind them.
What’s his performance like against fastballs?
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - September 25, 2010
2006-2009 he absolutely tortured fastballs, but was hurt by the changeup.
This season, pitchers are throwing him a lot more changeups, which he continues to struggle with, and his fastball recognition seems to have taken a sharp blow, perhaps as a result. He’s hitting breaking stuff fine though. He has positive values on sliders, cutters and curves. Interestingly, he’s seeing fewer first pitch strikes than ever.
FanGraphs publishes a lot of the PitchFX data. “Pitch Type” shows you how frequently he gets thrown a certain type of pitch, and “Pitch Type Value” shows how well he does with certain types of pitches relative to the average hitter.

Bunting a runner over ....
….. requires that someone would get on base.
Barca - September 27, 2010
if he
gets as much playing time as he did before Kendry went down, it’s better to just trade him. According to Sosh, Mathis is and will always be our starting catcher. There’s no point in wasting money on someone the manager won’t even play.

Is that a jab at my Napoli for Ellsbury dreams? I think it is.
Yeah you’re probably right though, I am dreaming. But if I were to state the case that makes it feasible…
- Napoli claimed off waivers by Red Sox, they are clearly interested in having him.
- They remember his performance at Fenway in the 2009 playoffs, where he WAS the Angels offense.
- The Red Sox have a gigantic hole at catcher, they’ve been playing a worse defensive catcher than Napoli all year.
- V-Mart is expected to command a minimum 10 million a year across 3 or 4 years. Napoli’s price is better.
- The Red Sox soured on Ellsbury this year, fans question his durability, Red Sox bought a plethora of replacements.
- Napoli’s power numbers would play extremely well back East.
- Angels are in need of a LF that can bat leadoff.
- Ellsbury’s price is much better for the Angels than Crawford’s.
It makes sense in my own little halowood world. But I do admit, it is only a dream and there’s nothing to this.
Halowood - September 25, 2010
In a vacuum, it's not a bad idea
I don’t think you’re the only one I’ve heard bring it up. But it just can’t happen because:
Suboptimal - September 25, 2010
Are you sure the media has that big of a role in a player's trade value? I'm not so sure.
I feel like teams have their own scouting resources they tend to follow. Sure the Angels are motivated to move Napoli, but they don’t have to move him at all. It’s not everyone’s favorite course of action because it forces Abreu into the field, but Napoli at DH keeps his power in the lineup and across 150 games that’s 30+ HR’s. His poor RISP may or may not be a trend, in 2008 he hit .274 with RISP, 2007 he hit .254. These aren’t great but seem closer to average for him. This whole RISP thing could be a fluke. Plus, as much as we love Conger, half season in AAA won’t kill him. Wilson can takes Mathis’ spot.
I feel like Napoli’s value is unchanged.
Halowood - September 25, 2010
I've also been one of the Napoli/Ellsbury guys
It makes sense in my world too.
WiHaloFan - September 26, 2010
I am no longer adding polls to my future fan posts....
I’ll post my guess as to the poll final tally. In this specific poll, it should read:
Saxon 95%
Napoli 5%
Somebody is messing with these things. Get a life, hackers.
Downing Rules - September 25, 2010
That's 5% too high for Napoli.
Chzburger Jones - September 25, 2010
I voted to see LESS of Napoli and I didn’t read it wrong (and despite the wishes of some, others didn’t read it wrong).
He won’t ever fully fit in with Soths plans and it is what it is. I also have some issues with his character but as a fan, I have that right. And so I don’t want to see him here next season (and he won’t be) SO THESE THREADS CAN FINALLY STOP.
Then at least we’ll just have ones bitching about Mathis or Conger all day.
Reference: See all the bitching about Fuentes and now Rodney once Fuentes is gone.
RedFog - September 25, 2010
And for clarification...
…so that someone doesn’t wonder who he raped that I have problems with his character, I’m mostly referring to his public comments (especially this year in spring training) regarding how he feels about his offense vs his defense, which should get focus, etc.
And there is no doubt that has to be a big part of how Soth feels about him vs. Mathis’ attitude. And also they are lovers, but that is besides the point.
The team will be far better off in the long run if they can get some good value for him (if his BA doesn’t keep falling before season end) and have someone that fits with Soths day-to-day plans and also not cock-block other players and have these endless platoons.
RedFog - September 25, 2010
And Sub, I don't blame you for this thread - you're reporting/sharing the blog news...
I just mean the daily debates and complaints…
RedFog - September 25, 2010
Understood
I honestly rolled my eyes when I first saw the article. Saxon has been the most strident voice saying, “Oh gee, maybe the Angels are getting tired of Mike Napoli and will finally trade him, wink wink.” I thought he would give it a rest when the waiver deadline passed, at least until the end of the season, but Saxon appears to just have it out for Mike. It’s like he got his feelings hurt when Napoli turned down an interview or something.
Suboptimal - September 25, 2010
If/When Napoli leaves ...
…. we will have daily posts about:
A) What a mistake it was.
B) How much better he is than what we got in return.
C) How much better he is than Mathis who still starts 140 games a year.
D) How he should be in the All Star game.
The only way people stop debate/complaining is if Captain Mike decides to play him every day.
Barca - September 27, 2010
his attitude appears to be worsening
much like his numbers have plummeted.
ops down
slg down
obp down
the homeruns are cool and much welcomed in this lineup, but the hot streaks have been spaced much further apart and less frequent this year. Partly to blame for that could be the sporadic and random play time he gets. But then that would also need to apply to Wood … and we don’t dare.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - September 25, 2010
avg extremely down
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - September 25, 2010
+1 for replying to your own posts (I pulled a level 3 inception - sans edit button)
RedFog - September 25, 2010
Do you blame him?
How many times does Napoli have to be dissed by Soth before he rebels (i.e. public comments). Would any self-respecting player who has a reasonable justification for his remarks just sit there and take it? Although some of his comments have been made publicly, none has been malicious or “out of bounds.” You are right, his stats are down from last year, but that is true for most of the team. What do you have to say to the other players? Should they also be traded?
angelslogic - September 25, 2010
i dont think he should be traded
unless he isn’t going to be a starter. then it’s better for the team to trade him.
I also have no problem with his comments, I think it’s great as a matter of fact.
I wish more players would question some of the weird shit scioscia does.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - September 25, 2010
Players can't question things in a public forum and expect good things to come from it...
We sure love to rip other players on other teams for not being good ‘characters’ but when Napoli does it, we look the other way?
Obviously it’s not new that fans are hypocrits when it comes to their own teams (not necessarily saying you), but NO GOOD has ever come from airing public laundry.
And I think with Soth, it’s a death knell. I’m not sure there is anything he hates more. He goes out of his way every day to say the right things (read: Brandon Wood) about everyone, at least in as much as he can without sounding like an idiot.
If Napoli had issues, he knows where Soths office is. Being open to the press about things like that not only shows you his true colors (selfish) but also makes a managers job that much harder – with once again, no good to come from it.
My only fear is he is stinking up the joint so bad that they won’t be able to get much for him since everyone knows they want to move him now…and we’re stuck with him again, only in a worse way.
I love horror movies but I don’t want to watch that one!
RedFog - September 25, 2010
What has Napoli said in public
Other than:
- “I would like to play more often.”
- “I should try to get better defensively.”
- “I would like to play here, but I will go anywhere I can get playing time.”
These all seem like perfectly reasonable public comments to me. What is he supposed to say?- “I hate playing baseball, I prefer to sit on the bench and make money for doing nothing.”
- “I am never going to practice being a catcher ever again. Practice is dumb.”
- “*#(@ this place! I’d rather sit on someone else’s bench.”
It’s guys like Saxon who are feeding us the image of Mike Napoli as lazy and petulant. Well, if you make the guy out as unfriendly, he’s going to be unfriendly to you, and then you’re going to write even more about him being unfriendly.Suboptimal - September 25, 2010
Totally agree.
angelslogic - September 26, 2010
but everyones avg is down
So that argument doesn’t make sense. Listen if everyone was batting .290 and above his downward trending numbers could be looked at comparatively, but since everyone isn’t hitting, why are his numbers the only ones people care about. Abreu is bad on defense, avg way down, more strikeouts and older than Naps and that argument can be made for just about any player on the team
Sinatrasratpack - September 25, 2010
he's the only guy being platooned though that's worth a damn
scioscia starts abreu every day and appears to dislike napoli.
you could get more in a trade for napoli than abreu
rather than letting him rot away on the bench, why not trade him?
the downward trend in the numbers is just to show that it might be a risk worth taking, unless they have plans on him being an every day player next year.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - September 25, 2010
Mike Napoli
Keep Mike Napoli, make him the starting DH, back up 1st baseman, back up catcher, dump Matsui, problem solved! Mike’s got a right to gripe, he would have had MUCH better numbers with more consistant playing time
