Final score after 12 innings: Angels 1, Rangers 2
The Angels lose this one on a passed ball by Jeff Mathis in the top of the 12th inning allowing the second unearned run to score. The method of the loss typified the entire game as the first Ranger run was allowed on a Kevin Frandsen throwing error in the third inning, while the Angels had a chance to take the lead in the 7th except Torii Hunter forgot he was supposed to run hard after hitting the ball. With runners on first and third with one out, Hunter hit a routine double play grounder to the Ranger shortstop Andres Blanco who flipped the ball to second for the first out. Howie Kendrick barreled into Ian Kinsler at second causing Kinsler to have trouble making the throw to first. Had Hunter been running hard, he would have been safe at first with Reggie Willits scoring the go-ahead run from third. However, Hunter took his time getting down the line and was an easy out to end the inning.
The Halos waste another stellar Dan Haren start, one in which he allowed no earned runs on 3 hits in seven innings. Four Angel relievers followed Haren with 4 innings of no-hit ball, at one point retiring 16 straight Ranger batters. That all went to waste as Matt Palmer gave up a lead-off double to Jeff Francouer who would eventually score the go-ahead run on Mathis' passed ball.

Where is Mathis in the poll?
~MMP~ - September 22, 2010
There should be no other option except Mathis.
Downing Rules - September 22, 2010
Is there a 4th choice for "Blame it on?"
Where’s Jeffe?
PieceOfAase - September 22, 2010
BOTG = Premium
Quad Fin Rider - September 22, 2010
I would have voted Co-BOTG
Torii’s hotdogging it could have ended the game in 8.5 innings. Instead, the Angels play extras and leads to the “Mathis blue-plate special” and boy it sure tastes like FAIL.
blast21dave - September 22, 2010
Amen
Never would have gone to extra frames.
rmhalofan - September 23, 2010
Yeah, but Mathis fail was so craptacular it was unbelievable.
red floyd - September 23, 2010
Plus his batting throughout the game
Downing Rules - September 23, 2010
In the 12th Mathisn't had:
As I said, craptacular.
red floyd - September 23, 2010
I haven't used my quota for a few months, so
FUCK mathis.
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK Mathis.
Can we trade him yet??
pattimelt - September 22, 2010
Just release him or not offer him a contract
Not even Scott Boras can make this guy look good with his current numbers.
blast21dave - September 22, 2010
Yo Hold Up!
You cant blame Jeff, he is premium. What did Napoli do tonight? All he did was hit a HR, and not allow the game winning run to score on a passed ball.
See, Jeff is the main event, he is involved in the game winning play… Napoli was just standing around on 1st base watching.
I hate Mathis.
Zookeeper - September 22, 2010
Remember when Mathis was good at baseball?
Neither do I.
~MMP~ - September 22, 2010
Don't forget ~MMP~
Mathis kicked ass during the ALCS and for the 1st two weeks of the season. Other than that, and every other year he has been on our roster, he has sucked. In the worst of ways. I wish we could DFA his ass TONIGHT!
halofolife - September 22, 2010
Mathis kicks ass pounding beers at the Goathill, too.
That in and of itself is worth at least another $1.5 million contract.
PieceOfAase - September 22, 2010
I missed most of the game,
But from what little I saw, how could the blame NOT be on Mathis? When I got home we were tied, after some “premium defense” by said waste of roster space we lost. How this backwater hick hasn’t been DFA’d yet is beyond me. Even if Torri didn’t hustle, when all is said and done once again it comes down to another epic Mathis fail.
halofolife - September 22, 2010
If Torii hustles, then we never get to see how prEmium Mathis really is
red floyd - September 22, 2010
He made a good play on Borbon earlier in the game...
but his performance at the plate was very Mathis-esque.
Downing Rules - September 22, 2010
Told you I didn't see most of the game red....
Cut me some slack jack!
halofolife - September 23, 2010
It sure would be nice...
to see Sosh have a little backbone and bench both their arses! Torii don’t want to run? Fine sit on the bench and think about what you’ve done. Mathis don’t want to stop sucking at life? Great, sit there and wait til papa gives you a premium hug. The rationalization for playing that guy is maddening!
The Land of Happy Trees - September 23, 2010
Mathis
Must be Scioscia’s illegitimate son… or maybe his grandson… but didnt we already decide that napoli was messing around with the daughter, this making him mathis’ dad?
Zookeeper - September 22, 2010
Premium is coming back for 2011, bank on it!
Scioscia will find a way to spin it on the Halos faithful. Somewhere, Mario Mendoza is laughing.
PieceOfAase - September 22, 2010
JEFF MATHIS IS THE WORST BASEBALL PLAYER ON THE PLANET
I was wondering why SCIOSCIA did not pinch hit for the human abomination in the NINTH INNING!!! What the hell, SOTH? STUPID! Then, his passed balls cost us the freakin’ game. UNBELIEVABLE!
When I saw Mathis on the on-deck circle in the 12th, from F110, I yelled: “PULL HIM BACK!!” Then, Mathis sat down… nobody came out for about 45 seconds. I saw the ball-boy running around and yelled loud enough for the entire dugout to hear: “Put in the ball-boy, even he can hit better than Mathis!!”
Downing Rules - September 22, 2010
Respectfully...
…you may not be giving Brandon Wood fair consideration for the title of “THE WORST BASEBALL PLAYER ON THE PLANET”.
He’s earned very strong consideration…..
mustard_man - September 23, 2010
Brandon Wood = one year of suck
Jeff mathis = 4.5 years of suck.
I think mathis has a firm grip on that title for now.
halofan4life - September 23, 2010
Wood
At least he can play a few positions reasonably well. Mathis catches like Napoli and hits like Wood.
dmhead - September 23, 2010
Frandsen's throwing error was bad, but it was early enough in the game that they should have been able to work around it, especially considering the stellar job that Haren did
red floyd - September 22, 2010
That bottom four in our lineup was PATHETIC tonight...
0-fer-17 according to Terry Smith.
Downing Rules - September 22, 2010
Black Hole
mathisrocks5 - September 22, 2010
I was there at the game
We sat two rows from the Rangers dugout cuz nobody was there, and I was right there when Mathis dropped the ball, I booded him but now I feel kind of bad cuz he could probably hear me. :’(
mathisrocks5 - September 22, 2010
He makes over a Million bucks a year
He’ll survive your taunting…
ryanfea - September 23, 2010
"I just missed it, to be honest," Mathis said. "Wasn’t no cross-up, nothing. It was a little cutter, and I just misjudged where it was. To come back like that and tie the game up with the homer, scrapping and clawing like that, to miss a ball like that is tough."
Angels_48 - September 23, 2010
All this hatred towards Mathis is unwarrented
Torri is supposed to be the leader. I know we’re out of the race but that is inexcusable to not run your ass off. Mathis (while still sucking) made a mistake, that’s not to say he didn’t give it his all. Torii just didn’t give it his all and to me, that’s far worse. For me, the BOTG belongs to the guy who played like he didn’t give a fuck (my F bomb for the month).
Teixeira Who? - September 23, 2010
It must be rough
to have to run really really hard down to first base four times a game.
Moondoggy - September 23, 2010
Cut the guy a break.
He’s making a paltry $18 million this year. We can’t expect him to hustle EVERY time.
bc56274 - September 23, 2010
His wallet is weighing him down
rmhalofan - September 23, 2010
Let's talk about the positives
We have to accept that Mathis will find some way of blowing the game for everyone.
But that was a hell of a pitching performance by our staff tonight.
Even if some members of the team don’t care, Haren does.
With our starters, I think the future looks bright. Clearly Texas and Oakland aren’t better than us.
Barca - September 23, 2010
Mathis by a hair.....
Sorry but I blame Mathis also. If you are going to bat .193, at least play some defense. Torii is second on my list for BOTG. A close second is Hunter. There is no excuse for not hustling…..
Scott C. Worden - September 23, 2010
Oops
Sorry for the repeat on the last message :-P
Scott C. Worden - September 23, 2010
It's alright
By putting in the effort to write it twice, you used more energy than Torii did last night.
ryanfea - September 23, 2010
Jeff Mathis isn't even close to leading this poll?
Apparently most of you HHers are drinking the same juice that Soth is drinking. It’s easy to pinpoint a BOTG on a pitcher (since it was 1 pitch), but seriously, Mathis had PLENTY more fail in this game (and season) that makes him the clear-cut loser of this game, this team, and of the league.
Dontbatvlad4th - September 23, 2010
I think there is a bug in the poll...
no way that 600 people voted between right now and 11PM last night.
Downing Rules - September 23, 2010
I think he was a late add to the poll,
if you read some of the early comments.
cath619 - September 23, 2010
He was leading by a wide margin after only 200 votes last night...
almost 3-to-1 to the next vote-getter at that juncture.
Downing Rules - September 23, 2010
Whoa, Nelly.
How did Soth get that many people to vote? And why does he hate Matt Palmer so much?
(My bad, I wasn’t around last night and didn’t look at timestamps on anything.)
cath619 - September 23, 2010
Yeah, Matt Palmer should have only about 25 votes, not 325.
Downing Rules - September 23, 2010
Yeah, something's up with the polls
Somehow Dick Schofield jumped into the lead on the shortstop poll.
I think someone has figured out how to hack the poll.
WiHaloFan - September 23, 2010
Yeah. My take on the blame is that it should go roughly
Mathisn’t: 45%
Torii: 40%
Frandsen: 10%
Palmer: 5%
Rationale:
red floyd - September 23, 2010
Blame of the game?
It’s the offense! 12 hits and 3 runs in the last 2 games (21 innings) against Ranger pitching.
Starting pitching was great.
Relief pitching was great.
Defense…well, 2 costly errors.
Offense…once again, pathetic.
sothball - September 23, 2010
I voted for Mathis
but after reading all the comments, I kinda feel bad for doing it. Nobody wants to suck, and, to the best of my knowledge, no player ever got better by having their own fans jeer and taunt them as they come up to the plate.
And does anyone think a player doing poorly will go their manager and ask to be benched, traded or released? In fact, I’m pretty sure that same player thinks that if he could just get a little more playing time he’d probably begin to play a bit better.
Having said all that, yeah, trade his ass.
agent_99 - September 23, 2010
In the defense of my jeering...
I waited until he FAILED to actual boo him.
Downing Rules - September 23, 2010
Another anemic, offenses fault loss
Can everyone please stop mainlining cat tranquilizers and stop thinking were playoff bound every time our Halos win two in a row??? Solid starting pitching, bad bullpen and a mind numbingly horrible offense does not a playoff contender make.
aces666high - September 23, 2010
Totally rational thought, but we're fans and we aren't supposed to think straight.
We’re busy trying to wish the Angels into the playoffs.
angelslogic - September 23, 2010
and wish the Rangers into a cornfield.
Downing Rules - September 23, 2010
It's a GOOD life
red floyd - September 23, 2010
Do u really want to see this abomination in the playoffs???
Watch in horror as we rack up a .098 BA w/risp, cringe in fear as Naps strikes out 2x w/runners on and Mathis rips slow choppers to the SS. Puke in anger as Callapso bats cleanup, burp in frustration as Fraudney comes in w/a 2 run lead and leaves w/a 1 run deficit. Etc, etc…
aces666high - September 23, 2010
Forgot the last nightmare
Weep openly as this team is kept together cuz they were that close(pinching fingers together!) to winning it all!
