over 1 year ago: ANAHEIM CA - SEPTEMBER 21: Ervin Santana #54 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim throws a pitch against the Texas Rangers on September 21 2010 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)
Final in Anaheim: Angels 2, Rangers 0
Pitching like the game really meant something, Ervin Santana scattered 5 singles to record his 5th career shutout. Santana was a monster on the mound, terrorizing the Ranger hitters by striking out 8 while allowing just one walk.
Although the Angels only managed to get 4 hits from their offense, the big blows came from lead-off hits by Hank Conger and Hideki Matsui. King Conger hit his first major league triple to start the second inning, while Godzilla doubled to begin the 4th. Both would eventually score on groundouts, but that would be all Santana would need.
With the win, Santana improves to 17-9 on the season, lowering his ERA to 3.77. The 17 wins is a personal high, besting his 16 wins in 2006 and 2008.

Light it up!

17 wins.
had to do a double take at that…
Wasn’t sure the angels even had 17 wins this season.

Kaz will be in the pen, initially on the excuse that “he has some things to work out”, but then we’ll start hearing that “having a strikeout lefty really adds an additional look to our pen, and he is helping us out there.”

Don't bring me down, Grosss!

Yep, it's among the most commonly misheard lyrics.

With Conger, Bourjos, and our starting rotation lined up.
I’m already locked and loaded for the 2011 season.
Go Halos!
RexTookMyStash - September 21, 2010
I'm somewhat surprised Santana has actually been this good this year.
He was shaky in the early going and I haven’t been paying MUCH attention to him since.
Great job, Ervin!

Just saying...
I know no one else may believe it, but everyone remembers the 1995 Angel collapse…. Although this may seem farfetched, the Angels finish the season, losing… lets say 2 more games. Texas goes to Oakland and Seattle and they struggle (HEAVILY). Could those last 4 games in Arlington maybe mean something?
I don’t know why I’m even contemplating this, but maybe just maybe the Angels fortunes could change?
SMUangelFan - September 21, 2010
i hope
Angels_48 - September 21, 2010
If we somehow manage to win 7/7 from the Rangers
and then take the series against the Sox and somehow claim at least a tie in the division. (Then win that hehe) LSB will be a smoldering pile of wreckage and tears.
Of course that has about a .01% change of actually happening so don’t get your hopes up.

oops.... and A's
so forgettable
hobbit_86 - September 21, 2010
There is always a chance!
Anything could still happen.
Angelsfan015 - September 22, 2010
Yes, that was VERY far-fetched. But it can happen.
Downing Rules - September 22, 2010
IF and ONLY IF
The Angels win tomorrow. THEN Texas loses 3 of 4 from Oakland WHILE the Angels win all 3 against the White Sox. THEN the Angels win the series in Oakland WHILE Seattle wins 2 of 3 from Texas. THEN the Angels ONLY have a chance to win the west by winning 4 in a row from Texas.
This scenario requires Texas to lose 10 of their last 12 games while the Angels win 10 of 11.
Pretty far fetched but still better than the Dodgers.

Guys…it’s not gonna happen. Stop putting those little mushrooms that grow in the back yard on ur pizza. Believe it or not there are gonna b a few years our Halos don’t make the playoffs. Believe me, I know. I lived thru oh about 864 of em. At least that’s what it felt like.
aces666high - September 22, 2010
Send these punks out of here tomorrow with a sweep!
Make it abundantly clear that they’re only where they are this year because we handed it to them as a gift. They aren’t even on track to win as many games as an average Angels season over the past decade. This was handed to them. Let the assholes sweat a bit.
firebird81 - September 22, 2010
Looking forward to next year with one eye...
I am happy to see the Halos finally put together a few (ok, 2 – I can count) games against Texas but should they have not been doiing this back in May, June, or July against 1 of every tem they faced to realistically have a shot at the AL West title at THIS time of year?
As an Angels fan, I have faith that the Halos will win a few more games this year, but may not have enough time to get the job done to get into the playoffs. That being said, I am optimistic about next year and the return of Kendry Morales. I think IF we can keep up the good pitching on a more regular basis and the offense can pick it up and be (I say it again) more consistent than they were this year, MAYBE we have a shot at the AL West crown next year instead of licking our collective wounds being FORCED TO ROOT FOR those Damn Yankees in an attempt to keep Texas from succeeding in the post season.
Texas will have a target on their back next season regardless of their making the playoffs or not this year and it will be up to the Angels and Oakland to show they deserve to beat them. Seattle, of course, will be in the mix, but if next year is like this year, they will continue to be an also-ran again.
Go Halos and whatever the outcome this year, I will be wearing my Red to show my support at every turn and hey, ho knows – Texas could collapse and Oakland could go into a tailspin, but we’ll see how things work out.
Angelsfan015 - September 22, 2010
you're going to root for the Yankees against the Rangers??
not me. I’ll root for any team but the Yanks/BoSox. I’d prefer the Rays go all the way, but if its the Rangers I’ll be ok with it. I want Vlad to succeed, and I don’t mind a team who has won 1 playoff game in their existance and not made the playoffs for over a decade succeed in the postseason. just because they are in our division does not mean I hate them. another season or two like this from the Rangers will change my view on that, but as for right now, let them have their success. we all know it is only happening because the Angels have sucked, not because the Rangers have dominated.
2pintsofbooze - September 22, 2010
BY the way...
We were at the game, so I see no mention on here about a presence in the dugout tonight. BAM-BAM!!!
firebird81 - September 22, 2010
seriously!
I thought one of the 1st things I would read on here now that I’m off of work and reading the threads is that Kendry Morales aka The Cuban Missle, aka K-Mo aka Bam-Bam! Was suited up today. That’s something to be excited about isn’t it??
(!ts_a_C.A._thing) - September 22, 2010 via mobile
He was doing on-air interviews with the press. That's why he was in uniform.
Designed to give hope and encouragement for next year to season ticket buyers.
44FAN - September 22, 2010
Like everyone here, I hate the CERA term.
But, has anyone else noticed how few runs have been scored when Conger starts behind the plate? And, do we think Sosh notices this?
halofan4life - September 22, 2010
I was thinking the same thing.
Weaver, Kaz, Santana all great starts with him behind the dish.
angelskid2210 - September 22, 2010
Kaz is the kicker.
WTY and Voodoo are at least good to awesome starters. We pray for a 5 inning league average start from Kaz.
halofan4life - September 22, 2010
I don’t think Captain Mike notices. He has been spouting off on how much Conger needs to learn.
Barca - September 22, 2010
It's like Scioscia actually believes Nichols Law
“A catcher who can hit must be terrible defensively, and a catcher who can’t hit must be awesome defensively. Ergo, Mathis is a great defender and Conger has a lot to learn.”
The_Question - September 22, 2010
Let's hope that Conger helps redefine in Sosh's brain what "premium" REALLY means
RedHatHalo - September 22, 2010
That's right.........no effin celebrating on our field!
norcaliangelsfan - September 22, 2010
Sweet ...
I have been to all four of Ervin Santana’s home CGSOs:
9/21/10 2-0 TEX @ LAA
8/11/10 6-0 TBR @ LAA
9/28/09 11-0 TEX @ LAA
5/23/05 4-0 CHW @ LAA
Better Luck:
Someone handed me Diamond Club seats as I was about to walk through the gates. What a nice, nice person! My 6-yo son had been beating me up all season to buy him tickets there. Life is good. People are good.
Downing Rules - September 22, 2010
CGSO v. Rays was in 2009
Not 2010.
jjackflash - September 22, 2010
Yep...
it was Mike Napoli bobblehead night.
Downing Rules - September 22, 2010
Mrs. Sothball and I were at that first SO in 2005.
That was his first home start…and IIRC, the 2nd start of his career (after allowing the cycle to the 1st 4 batters in his first game).
sothball - September 22, 2010
YDRC = You Do Recall Correctly
His first start was on the road in CLE and he was roughed up. Then he CGSO’s the eventual WS Champs in his home debut. If I recall correctly, he jumped from AA to the bigs. Ervin Santana has an interesting career-path example for those of us who voice our concerns about bringing guys up too quickly.
Downing Rules - September 22, 2010
I was there, too
I was thinking I saw him pitch a CGSO, but looking at the box, I couldn’t remember the details. But I got a Napoli bobblehead last year, so I was there. Almost went last night because I had a feeling Santana was going to be on his game, but decided to go tonight instead to see Haren pitch (never seen him before). I probably made a mistake, but oh well.
