Kazmir bests Rays in return to the Trop - angelsbaseball.com
Kazmir allowed one run in five innings and beat his former club for the first time in three tries, leading the Angels (73-76) to a 6-3 win over the Rays (89-59) before 25,794 in his first trip back to the stadium he called home for the first 5 1/2 seasons of his career. "I've already faced these guys three times, so it's nothing new anymore. But being at Tropicana Field, it was a little bit different," Kazmir said. "It was just weird, coming out of the dugout from the other side and going up against guys that you've known close to your whole career. But it was a good win for all of us." Manager Mike Scioscia said before the game he filled out his lineup with offense in mind, hoping to give Kazmir plenty of support, and the plan worked. Abreu hit two solo home runs to right field in the first and seventh innings, respectively, for the 15th multi-homer game of his career. His two long balls Sunday also put him at 20 on the year, giving him nine 20-homer, 20-steal seasons -- the third most in Major League history and the most among active players.

This was the type of game Angels fans were expecting all year -- decent pitching, "batter's box offense", and solid defense -- instead of the uninspiring play that was frequently displayed throughout the season. One thing that was kind of funny was Scioscia's comment about putting an offensive lineup on the field, and then having the bottom third of the batting order feature three players with batting averages below .200. I get why it's like that, but still, how intentionally un-offensive could the lineup have been if Scioscia was going for that look? The only offensive downgrade could have been Willits for Hunter. Anyway, glad to see Angels win a series against a good team. Here's some 'lights: Abreu opens the scoring with a solo shot - Bobby Abreu takes Jeff Niemann deep in the top of the first, staking the Angels to a 1-0 lead,Abreu delivers his second blast of the game - Bobby Abreu belts his second dinger of the day, a solo shot to right field in the top of the seventh,Bourjos cranks a three-run dinger to left - Peter Bourjos gives the Angels a 4-1 advantage in the top of the fourth with a shot to left, Rivera tags Crawford to end the game - Juan Rivera gets the tag on Carl Crawford at first base to end the Angels' 6-3 win over the Rays (watch for Walden to make sure he gets the ball from his first career save), Hunter flips over the wall in foul ground - Torii Hunter flips over the wall in foul territory after Ben Zobrist's fly ball goes off his glove for a ground-rule double (the security guard in this video looks like this type of thing happens all the time. Dude, it's Torii Hunter. Yeah TORII HUNTER!). Kazmir earns the win against the Rays - Scott Kazmir strikes out four over five innings of work and earns the win against the Rays.
Rangers-Angels Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
The Rangers' chances of bouncing back don't appear strong against Weaver (12-11, 2.96 ERA), who has a major league-best 1.56 ERA at home this season. The right-hander, though, is 3-3 in his past 10 starts there despite a 1.23 ERA, and he's received no more than three runs of support per outing. Weaver appears to have a better chance to collect a victory with the Rangers arriving. He's 5-0 with a 2.40 ERA in nine career home starts against Texas, and has won four consecutive matchups there including two this season. The Angels will try to keep rolling against Derek Holland (3-3, 4.12), who has struggled on the road throughout his brief career but was impressive in his previous outing there. Holland is 2-2 with a 4.44 ERA in four career starts against the Angels, and earned a 4-3 win on May 17 at home by allowing three runs over 5 1-3 innings. Los Angeles has won four of six at home over its AL West rivals, but trails the season series 7-5.
Too bad this game doesn't have as much playoff implications as it should.

Angels' Reagins: There will be changes this off-season - The Orange County Register
"There will be some changes. The extent of those changes and how those changes manifest themselves remains to be seen." Reagins' options could be limited, however, by the Angels' financial commitments for 2011. With their mid-season acquisition of right-hander Dan Haren, the Angels have nine players under contract for next season at a total salary of approximately $81 million. Another 10 players will be eligible for salary arbitration and pay raises that are likely to be significant. Add in the $11 million the Angels still owe Gary Matthews Jr., and Angels owner Arte Moreno is looking at more than $120 million in salary obligations before any changes are made to the roster. That would be a franchise record.
With the payroll already at $120M, the Angels off-season may be pretty boring, at least as far as free agent signings. It's good to see Reagins has gained a firm grasp of the "GM non-speak". You know, the words are there, but they just don't say anything.
Yu Darvish could be headed to MLB this offseason - HardballTalk
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal heard from a source Saturday that right-hander Yu Darvish is likely to be "posted" this winter, meaning teams in Major League Baseball will have a crack at luring him away from the Nippon Ham Fighters.
I just recently found out the name of this team isn't the Nippon "Ham Fighters" as in, a team intent on doing some serious harm to pigs, but rather the Nippon Ham "Fighters". Nippon Ham is the sponsor of the team. I like my version better.

Hm, got to win at least two games
To not get eliminated.

yeah I guess.........
but two wins by them and a loss by Oakland clinches it I believe.

Yes. They *MUST NOT* celebrate on our field.

Oh God, how much would they love that.

let them clinch anywhere but here.

I'm sleepy.
I read the poll as “Should MLB Outlaw Maple Bars” and the options as:
“Yes, they’re dangerous
No, they’re more dangerous than other bars”
I thought the trick question was rather clever until I un-blearied myself enough to get a better look at the actual poll.

I love maple bars!
RexTookMyStash - September 20, 2010
Ditto that.

red floyd - September 20, 2010
Maple bats are dangerous
If this had happened to an Angel player, this site would have a petition going to outlaw them. They’ve been proven to splinter more and are more dangerous. It’s time, MLB. Get rid of them
hk47 - September 20, 2010
Good point
Sounds about right.
Clutch - September 20, 2010
Meh, not really
Freak accident. That’s a one-in-a-million shot much like Kendry Morales. I didn’t see a petition to ban home plate after that (although you would think they way they’ve been playing the Angels signed one).
Dontbatvlad4th - September 20, 2010
YU! YU! YU!
He’s going to be very expensive, but man, if Arte could get him here, the Angels would be nearly unstoppable. This guy is no joke and he’s like 5 or 6 years younger than most NPB players are when they transition to MLB.
He’s also incredibly popular in Japan, both on and off the field. Want to secure a market of 100+ million people for the next 5-6 years? This would be a good way to do it.
Commander_Nate - September 20, 2010
Our offense has to be higher priority this year.
We have 4 solid starters for 2011. If we can upgrade the offense (Lead-off hitter, 3B, one outfield position, and catcher if Napoli is traded), AND sign Darvish, great. But a better offense has to be a higher priority.
With a decent offense and a reliable closer, Weaver would be closing in on 20 wins.
sothball - September 20, 2010
I don't disagree that we could use more offense
But I think we’re more likely to get that via trade than free agency. Outside of Beltre for 3rd, I don’t see any position that we could really use a FA at. We are overloaded with middle infielders, catchers, DH’s and outfielders.
If we did sign Darvish, we would have 5 starters who could go out and put up quality start after quality start. The offense would be less of an issue in that situation.
Commander_Nate - September 20, 2010
Offseason
Trade:
Rivera
Mathis (im not even sure if this is possible), or Napoli (would fetch some good stuff)
Sign:
Adam Dunn (To Fill the DH/OF role)
Soriano (Its fairly obvious the angels need him)
Play:
Conger everyday at catcher
Bourjos Everyday at CF
Wood everyday at 3B
PhiSlamma - September 20, 2010
agree with everything you said
except playing Wood every day.
I’ve been talking myself into Dunn for the past week or so. him batting behind Kendry is very attractive.
2pintsofbooze - September 20, 2010
my reasoning behind Wood is
Callaspo isnt much of an upgrade and Wood, in my mind, could still produce at a high SLG level from the 7 spot or so in the lineup.
Obviously Wood will be cut after this year if he doesnt, but I would like to see more out of him.
PhiSlamma - September 20, 2010
Mathis stands a good chance of being non-tendered
If we could get something for him though, that would be a bonus.
Commander_Nate - September 20, 2010
I would love to have Dunn, but he doesn't want to be a DH.
~MMP~ - September 20, 2010
He would spend time at DH, OF, and 1B
If thats not ok then f him
PhiSlamma - September 20, 2010
and depending on how many years they give him
they can sell the rotating position/DH on keeping him healthy for the many years he’s an Angel.
it seems like he likes it in DC though.
2pintsofbooze - September 20, 2010
Agree 100%
If Kazmir pitches like he did Sunday, he still makes a decent 5th starter following a really good 1-4. If he doesn’t work out, the serviceable Bell and Palmer are waiting in the wings.
I also agree that offense is the more critical issue. I’m starting to come around on the whole Crawford idea (although the report on the payroll for next season makes it look like we may not be able to afford Crawford after all). Even though we’ve already got plenty of outfielders, LF is a weakness right now. The lead-off spot is a weakness too. If he’s willing to lead off, he solves 2 problems at once. I just worry about giving him the 5 years he’s sure to ask for. We could sign a DH to a shorter contract instead, and live with Abreu in LF for another year. But that wouldn’t solve the lead-off problem. In order to play true Soth Ball, we need a bona fide lead-off hitter. Plus, signing a DH means we have to either let Naps catch, play 1B (move Morales to 3B is my vote), or trade him.
And you’re right that Weave should have 20 wins. If the pundits knew how little W-L records really speak about a pitcher, he should be in the Cy Young talks this year. The WHIP and K/BB ratio show he’s one of the best. We’ll see, if he gets 14 or 15, maybe he will be talked about. Didn’t Grienke get it with 16 wins?
Rally Manatee - September 20, 2010
He was 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA. His ERA+ was 205!
sothball - September 20, 2010
Don't look now but Kaz is actually doing well since that 13 run shellacking...
His era since then is 3.83 and he’s giving us a chance to win in every start, although his walks are still atrocious and his BAbip is a meager .259, bound to go up a bit. Not saying he’s going to be the next ace of our staff, but maybe a decent 5th spot guy in 2012, albeit at $12,000,000 (yeah, a lot of zeros).
Also, he’s the perfect guy to give our young bullpen arms a chance to prove themselves as he hardly ever tries to steal the stage in the later innings by competing for more than 5.
stereoscopic - September 20, 2010
If he could hold to an ERA around 4.25 - 4.75, he'd make a decent 5th starter.
There are signs of trouble though. His quantity of walks is trending back to his rookie years (currently 4.8/9 innings), while his K rate is continuing a downward trend (a high of 11.1 in 2004 vs 5.8 this season). His ERA has trended upward since 2006 (3.24 in ’06 vs 5.84 this year).
Others with greater analytical ability have commented that he’s not getting the break on his slider he once had. I am not sure whether he’s still injured or – perhaps as bad – he’s afraid of re-injury. Either way, he will have a difficult time upholding a decent 5th starter ERA given these trends.
And yes, he’s awfully expensive for a #5 starter that barely gets through 5 innings.

I'm surprised bamboo hasn't caught on yet.
I had a Mizuno bamboo bat for a while. It lasted 4 months before it broke. That’s pretty good. Others have only lasted me like 4 at-bats. Of course I face dudes that throw like 60 mph.
The advantages are that there’s supposedly no weak spots because bamboo is more sinuous than tree wood. You don’t have to worry about the “grain” and facing the label up because bamboo doesn’t have a grain like wood. It’s also less likely to break when you get jammed or hit it off the end of the bat. Plus, they supposedly have a larger sweet spot, and make the ball travel a bit further because bamboo has better bounce. And not that it matters to MLB players, but for us civilians, it’s nice to know they aren’t much more expensive than an nice maple or ash bat, I think they’re like $50.
The only disadvantage is that they sound kind of funny. You don’t get that classic crack-of-the-bat sound. It’s more of a thwack than a crack.
Rally Manatee - September 20, 2010
I hadn't heard of these before.
Are they “solid” bamboo (the bamboo I have seen cultivated at the diameter of a bat has a hollow core) or are they made from strips of bamboo that are then laminated?
sothball - September 20, 2010
Yeah
Ultra compressed strips of bamboo that are well coated. It’s a solid bat, not hollow.
Rally Manatee - September 20, 2010
I've always thought some type of laminated / plywood bat could be enginered that would be viable.
The bamboo bats would also be greener as it is a more quickly renewable resource.
44FAN - September 20, 2010
Yup.
Bamboo flooring is being hawked like crazy in the construction industry just for the “green” reason. It doesn’t have quite the character of domestic hardwoods, but it’s not bad. I’d put it in my home.
I’d never thought of it as bat material though…
sothball - September 20, 2010
I remember hearing that couple MLBers were sporting them
but I couldn’t tell you who now. This was a couple years ago.
When I finally broke mine, it wasn’t a dangerous splintering either. I can’t imagine anyone being strong enough to make one even break into 2 pieces.
Rally Manatee - September 21, 2010
Michael Vick made the same mistake with the Nippon Ham team

that in this age of interleague, the Dodgers have never played in Yankee stadium?

The St. Louis Browns, er Cardinals, have never played in Baltimore.
The lovable loser, Cubs, have never played at those other long time loser, Red Sox.

They did when they played in the WS in the 70s.
I don’t think the Doyers and Yankees played interleague until this year.
red floyd - September 20, 2010
Angels actually winning a series is great, but...
Let’s look at the big picture here. What if Rays miss homefield advantage by half a game. That means more games at Skankee stadium, more Skankee fans, and more Nick Swisher homeruns on that softball field. Not a good thing, I was upset to see the Angels show up for the first time since the ASB.
Dontbatvlad4th - September 20, 2010
Neither way one team finishes 1/2 game behind the other.
For that to happen, one team would have to play one game less than the other due to postponement.
That game would be played so they either finished the season tied or one team a full game behind the other.

Adding-Werth-Batista-Conger-Peter& Trumbo along with Zack pitching and wow the Angels will be big time powerful and still have a payroll of about 120 million—they could have 5 guys hit 30 HRs-or more-5 pitchers win 15 games or more and 6 guys with 100 RBIs and 3 guys with 20 or more SB—very very powerful for at least 3 more years also!
