Reagins made a good trade, Angels are not done. Halolinks.

Angels' Tony Reagins doesn't brush aside criticism - latimes.com
The Haren deal was especially lopsided — in favor of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who acquired Saunders, a 29-year-old left-hander still two seasons from free agency, then had to fight the urge to burst out laughing when the Angels agreed to throw in reliever Rafael Rodriguez and minor league left-handers Tyler Skaggs and Patrick Corbin, two of the team's top 12 prospects according to Baseball America.

This article was written by the Times' Kevin Baxter.  Kevin Baxter is probably the only person on earth who thinks the Angels got the short end of the stick in the Haren deal.  Baxter writes, "Never mind that Saunders is younger, cheaper and has more wins over the last three seasons than Haren. Reality, apparently, can be evasive at times."  You know what else can be evasive at the Times (see what I did there?)  How about the use of up-to-date baseball analysis.  He's right when he states Saunders has more wins.  Saunders has 41, Haren has 40.  But, why is he cherry-picking wins?  And why 3 years worth of wins?  Wins are not a good indicator of a pitcher's value, but if you insist on using wins how about this; Over the last FOUR years Haren has 55 wins to Saunders' 49.  Oh, I see why he used 3 years.  Let's look at this using something other than wins to see which pitcher has been better over the last 3 seasons, seasons where Haren has thrown 654.1 innings to Saunders' 560:

  • Haren has had an ERA+ of 129.  Saunders' has been 105.
  • Baserunners per inning:  Haren 1.142, Saunders 1.371
  • Home runs per 9 innings:  Haren 1.0, Saunders 1.2
  • Walks per 9 innings:  Haren 1.7, Saunders 2.9
  • Strikeouts per 9 innings:  Haren 8.6, Saunders 4.8

To cherry-pick one stat to try and make a point is ridiculous.  Using stat like wins only makes it worse

Angels-Indians Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
The Los Angeles Angels beat Cleveland to spark their current winning streak. Scott Kazmir hopes another strong outing against the Indians will help his team keep it going. Looking for his first win in more than a month, Kazmir tries to lead the Angels to a fifth consecutive victory Tuesday night against the Indians at Progressive Field. Kazmir (8-13, 5.98 ERA) has not won since Aug. 7 at Detroit, but allowed one run, two hits and struck out six in six innings of Thursday's victory over the Indians. The left-hander is 0-4 with a 4.28 ERA in his last six starts, but has a 2.31 ERA in the last two. His teammates, however, have scored a combined three runs in those games. Mike Napoli, who hit his career-high 24th home run in the Angles' 3-0 win over the Mariners on Sunday, homered off Indians scheduled starter Josh Tomlin (3-3, 4.18) on Thursday. The right-hander has allowed three runs in each of his last three outings, going 2-0 with a 4.76 ERA during that span. He gave up three hits in six innings versus Los Angeles last week.

I was wrong when I previously said the season is lost and the Angels should be playing Trumbo, Conger, and Wood every game.  I still think the season is lost, but as long as the Angels are not officially eliminated, Scioscia should be putting the best team on the field each day.  He owes it to the fans who pay their money to see the team.  He owes it to the players, and he owes it to the other teams in the league.

Angels can't expect young pitchers to solve all bullpen problems - latimes.com
"The arms are there, the stuff is there, but you have to have the ability to make pitches when it counts," Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher said. "We need to slow the game down, make pitches and stop the bleeding. The pieces are there, but a larger sample size will be to see these guys in a whole season." Thompson, 26, who has shuttled between triple A and the big leagues for four years, has been much more effective -- a 1.15 ERA in 10 appearances -- since adding his cutter. "We loved his arm a couple of years ago, but he got stale, stagnant and wasn't improving," Scioscia said. "He's redefined himself in the last year. He came up with a cutter, he has a good downhill angle and he's throwing strikes. He's pitched well in some pressure situations."

A couple interesting quotes from Butcher and Scioscia.  (I love it when a coach uses the term "sample size")

In defense of Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, jaywalkers, and all the other scofflaws that make America great. - By Bill James - Slate Magazine
First of all, I have absolutely no doubt that, had steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs existed during Babe Ruth's career, Babe Ruth would not only have used them, he would have used more of them than Barry Bonds.

Bill James has something to say, and dammit you're going to listen.

Documentarian Ken Burns brings 'Baseball' up to date with sequel - USATODAY.com
Baseball: The Tenth Inning, which is broken into two two-hour installments, debuts Sept. 28 and 29 on PBS. Burns discussed it last week with USA TODAY.

One of the only things I took away from Burns' first baseball documentation was the reason Tim Raines slid headfirst was so he wouldn't mess up the cocaine he had in his back pocket of his uniform.  Why do I get the feeling that after I watch the sequel, I'm going to have to live with the picture of a syringe sticking out of Mark McGwire's butt?

"It's hard to point at the sky when you're wearing handcuffs"

This comment is epically great.

the title of his future autobiography
It is epic.

And Frankie looks fat to me. Does he look fat to you?

See what the call ups can do.

Their regular lineup hasn’t been worth much all season. At this point seeing what Conger and Trumbo can do is almost the only thing with any value.

Why presume the fans want to continue to see...

…Mathis/Wilson/Napoli over Conger, and Rivera/Napoli/? over Trumbo? Who is to say the “regulars” are any better than the guys coming up from the minors? Especially when we haven’t seen the guys from the minors in action (OK…one AB each)?

This season is a lost cause in the sense of making the playoffs. The only possible salvage of this season is finding if position players up from the minors actually have a change against MLB pitching.

Pitchers up from the minors have been given opportunities over “regulars”. Why not batters?

Yes, but...

It isn’t just about us. We play the Rays this weekend, and the White Sox the following weekend, both of which are in divisional races (the Rays more so than the ChiSox, but still…). If we play a AA and AAA lineup and roll over for those teams, it has a direct affect on the races with the Twins and Yankees.

Likewise, if we put the starting lineup of the Little Sisters of the Poor on the field for the seven games against the Rangers, and therefore cause the Rangers to get a homefield advantage
in the playoffs—wouldn’t you be pissed if you were playing for their opponent?

It is less important when it comes to the bullpen, since those are arms which come in for an inning only, or even part of an inning. The hitters are a more important part of putting a real MLB lineup on the field.

It hurts nobody to play the thinnest lineup we have against the Indians, but there are some upcoming games where we have an obligation to put the best lineup forward.

I don't think anyone is saying

they should put a full squad of minor leaguers out there the rest of the way. there are really only 2 guys that people want to see play in some games, and thats Conger and Trumbo. playing a guy who was the mvp of the futures game shouldn’t spark questions, and neither should playing a power hitting first baseman at 1st base after A) he’s had a stellar season in the minors, and B) we are currently missing our 1st baseman. on a day when Nap is catching, they could easily get away with playing Trumbo at 1st without it being looked at as them not playing their “optimum” lineup.

shit, this team was playing McAnaulty at 1st in the middle of the season when they were still (trying to) contend. them not playing a better, younger, thinner 1st baseman having a better season than what MacAfatty was doing just because its later in the season and we owe it to the other teams doesn’t sound like an argument I can get behind, not after what I saw earlier in the season.

If putting Trumbo and Conger in the line-up...

…over Rivera and Mathis makes us the “Little Sisters of the Poor”, then our future’s so dark I better put on night vision goggles.

Is this really that much worse of a line-up? The most honest answer to me is, I don’t know. And I won’t be able to answer honestly until either/both get playing time.

The team I care most about are the Angels. If the Twins or Yankees object because we are trying to get a sense of what we have (in Conger and Trumbo), TOO FRIGGIN’ BAD.

MLB allows teams to call players up from the minors on 9/1 just for the purpose of discovering if they have MLB talent. If they (Twins, Yankees, or any other team) want to complain, then complain to the people that make the rules.

In the meantime, I want to see what Conger and Trumbo can do on the MLB level so we have at least a small sample of their abilities.

- wouldn’t you be pissed if you were playing for their opponent?

Are you asking me to worry about pissing off the Yankees and their fans? When i read this it was the first time I thought “Pitch Mathis against the Rays, bet he’ll be a premium pitcher…” I hate the Skanks and their whore fans. Show me what Hank and Mark can do, and spot start Reckling besides…. or a lucky fan.

We have zero responsibility to any other team

Now if Scioscia played all his scrubs against the Rays and then all of his starters against the Sox, that would be suspect. But the point remains, the Angels can set their lineup however they see fit, and it’s really easy to justify anything. If Scioscia wants to play the youngsters to get them big league time, that’s a very legitimate standpoint.

Hell yes

Now someone please tell this to our manager.

OK, reverse the scenario

It’s Sept 15, the Angels are 4 games behind the Rangers and entering into a 3-game series against the fighting-for-1st-place, 2010 Yankees. We’re going to face every single high-paid Hessian starter on the Yankees.

Meanwhile, the Rangers, the team we’re struggling to catch before the end of the season, is starting a 3-game series against the Tigers. The Tigers, having realized a week or two ago that they had no chance to catch the Twins, are now inserting two untested AAA bats into the lineup to gauge their talent, which is, was we know, their right. The Tigers aren’t a bad team, only one game under .500 at the moment, but out of the race.

As the pursuing team, we’d be pissed off that the Rangers would be handed a relative cakewalk while we have to gut out three games against a team fighting for every game.

Likewise, if we lost the home field advantage in a round of the playoffs because our opponent earned a better record in the final weeks by playing teams which conducted nightly lab experiments with AAA players while prepping for 2011, then we’d be pissed. We’d expect our opponents to have as tough a road to travel as we would have had.

Pretending otherwise is disingenuous.

I agree that many people on this site would complain

In my opinion, however, there would be no basis to do so. Each team needs to do what is in its best interest. If that means starting call-ups to determine whether they have legitimate value to the big league squad next season, then that is what the team should do. No other team has a basis to challenge that decision. It would be a different scenario, however, if AAA players were playing because the big leaguers had given up on the season and did not want to play. That would be unacceptable.

I was really more after what is proper in terms of sportsmanship

I think a team should go with its best guns until the fight is over. I know that any team has the right to deliver a lineup of nothing but women softballers if it wants to, but the “right” thing to do is to come as hard as you can until the division is won.

But, hey, maybe that’s just me.

In this case, the elimination # for the Angels now is 8, and my guess would be that Scioscia will play Trumbo and Conger after the team is officially eliminated, but perhaps not against the Rangers.

Scioscia seems more interested in having kids come up and experience being at the pro level (jet planes, someone to handle the suitcases, etc). so they know what they’re working so hard for. He seems less concerned with getting them into games. I imagine Conger and Trumbo will see a start before the end of the season if the schedule has a game which is non-essential to either team’s 2010 plans. Otherwise, there could be an occasional pinch hit situation in an extra-inning game or a replacement opportunity in a blowout, but mostly a chance to see how comfy the bench in Anaheim can be for 9 innings.

Fair Points

re: sportsmanship, but what if the AAA guys are actually better than the major leaguers? In other words, what putting the best, most competitive lineup out there means playing Conger and Trumbo in place of Mathis & Rivera? I’m not saying that is, in fact, the case, but suppose it is? Some folks (around here, anyway) believe this to be true.

This is another issue it's difficult to get worked up over.

Scioscia will likely allow these guys precious little playing time. And that will be that.

The point to me is, no one knows if they will be better or worse until they play. Until then, all of us are guessing.

That being the case, I default to whatever is in the best interest of the Angels (within the rules). That better interest would be to see what we have in Trumbo and Conger.

Here’s a view from another angle. In September,2002, the Angels brought up K-Rod and Figgy. They both had a very positive impact on the Angels playoff chances. Was that unfair to Oakland and Seattle?

I see what you're meaning

But I stated before I was limiting my thoughts to position players who come to bat 3-4 times a game. Everyone’s bullpen is stuffed to the limit the fire marshall will allow, so including Frankie or Walden isn’t really the same thing.

Likewise, Figgins was limited to pinch-running duties in 2002. Without calling up B-R, I don’t believe he carried leather in his time leading to the postseason.

I still disagree with you 100%

refer to my above comment to see why.

also, I think Sothball said it very well when he said

If putting Trumbo and Conger in the line-up over Rivera and Mathis makes us the "Little Sisters of the Poor", then our future’s so dark I better put on night vision goggles.
What already know what we have

with Mathis, Rivera & company and it’s not pretty. Why not take a shot with the kids as they may be better and aren’t likely to be much worse.

Yeah, I think I would be checking out the call-ups.

Get them some major league experience and see what they’ve got. We all sat for years thinking Brandon Wood was just ripe for the picking and then once he got up here he just choked. Mark Trumbo is one that seriously interests me. Bobby Wilson and Hank Conger should be doing some platooning at catcher. Bring Kohn and Walden in as much as possible. They both have shown at least as much upside as our full-time bullpen.

I didn't know Jerry Dogget had died.

But I was living in Castro Valley then and in the Bay Area there is very little coverage of the south end of the state.

Yes, but his hairpiece is enjoying a comfortable retirement in Palm Desert
Baxter's article was a complete failure.

Of all the things to write about Tony Reagins not doing his job properly, he picks the one great thing he accomplished this season.

Whew! Good thing nobody pays to read the newspaper anymore.
LLOL

Thank goodness I’ve made a career tweak.

I know this has been disputed on this very site...

but I still think our front four rotation of Haren, Weaver, Santana and Pineiro is as good as any in baseball.

If the Angels get a clue and move Kazmir to the pen and Bell into the rotation permanently and then let Walden and Kohn actually pitch I think our staff will be improved significantly next year.

I’m exciting about our starting pitching for next season.

It’s our bats I’m worried about.

You are exciting. ;-)
i dont think kazmir could be half bad.

IF, and that’s a big if, he learns how to make adjustments and work with what he’s got now like Santana did. But assuming he doesn’t I don’t think he’d be a bad bullpen arm. He’d be able to throw as hard as he wanted and not have to worry about conserving energy.. it’d just suck to be paying so much money to a bullpen arm.

I sound like Borat there don't I?
Kazakhstan is the greatest country in the world!

All of the other countries are ruled by little girls!

Good write-up.

It never ceases to amaze me how much more intelligent the articles are here (on average) than the ones written by the professional sportswriters/sportsbloggers.

I don't mind giving the call-ups some playing time

But I don’t want to tune in and see a lineup I don’t recognize. We need to keep playing our best players until we are mathmatically eliminated from contention and then give the regulars enough playing time to trying and reach their personal goals and stats for the season. I am going to watch my Angels until the last game and I want to see the best players playing. The new guys can show their stuff in spring training.

This is the perfect place to begin learning the names of our more notable minor league players,

so that you can recognize them easily if they appear in a lineup. Halowood and mathisrocks5 must not be doing a very good job if you haven’t picked up at least a few of them by now.

That Haren aritcle is bullshit
Baserunners per 9 innings seems unbelievably low.

Might that be WHIP?

Nah man

1 baserunner per game. Thats how good Saunders was, the shitty sportswriter/dong fluffer got it totally correct.

Good catch.

Yeah, that’s WHIP.

Fixed.

I have not seen any fire in the belly of any of these guys for weeks and weeks now.

So why should I be thinking that the D-Rays or White Sox are believing that the Halos are playing for real? Get the kids their licks. Get it over with. The sooner we start learnign how far they have to go, the sooner we can prep for the upcoming FA market.

totally agree with the fire in the belly lacking comment

it seems like we’ve really lacked any sort of pulse most of the season, especially in the 2nd half. It reminds me of Figgins before he got a talking to from Coach Haynes, expect we have a team on offense full of them.

I wonder what Tony is going to do in the offseason. Part of me wants to see a major overhaul of our offense but I know it’s unlikely we do that and end up a better team given where we are with projected salaries.
Best to know exactly what we have across the board now, so we have the depth next year lined up should we need it. In the Stoneman era we seemed pretty deep across SP, bullpen and the infield. Seems that has been lacking under Reagins and it’s 1 thing we could do ourselves a favor and start to get a handle on it.

Baxter comments....

Sometimes it’s good to have someone who doesn’t cover the team on a daily basis put in their opinion; often the regular beat writers feel the need to follow the pack – and in the case of the Haren deal, the pack definitely liked the Angels side. There are many aspects of the deal to consider, but to me the most important is: if you go into a elimination playoff game in Yankee Stadium in the next few years, who do you want to pitch: Dan Haren or Joe Saunders ? Watching last year’s clincher, at no point did it appear that Saunders could or would challenge the Yanks (0 Ks); it was just a matter of (painful) time before they put him out of his misery…..Joe was a decent back-of-the-rotation starter, but if you want to go for championships you’ve gotta bring something better….Haren’s not a sure thing, but certainly an upgrade.
Now as far as the Callaspo deal…..THAT was desperation, even if O’Sullivan and Smith never win another game…..
