Angels have Monday off... so with nothing else to talk about, it is football season - is there a team in the NFL with whom you live and die? Who are they what are their chances this year and are you as into your football team as you are into the Angels?
I've been a Packer fan since 1987, rooted for the Browns during the Kosar years and loved the Ferragamo-era Rams growing up. You?

My mother is from Kenosha
and anyone from Wisconsin eats sleeps and breathes either the Packers or the Bears.
However I learned that only drunks and bad people like the Bears so I was raised a Packers fan.

I went to a Polish wedding in Kenosha
Took the trip from Des Moines. My friend Ted Palbicki’s cousin or something was getting married. I was about, oh, 16. Drove there in a ’72 Impala with a 350 V8.
Lots of Polka going on there at the wedding. There was a hot girl there named Mary.
What were saying about the Packers and Bears again?
vladtheimpaler - September 13, 2010
Nice.
I used to have a ‘77 Impala. Around ’87 or ’88 the engine block cracked just outside Cleveland. We replaced it with a 450 horse Corvette V8. That car would drive itself. It’s still on the road too. My dad sees it all the time cause it still has the California Angels bumper sticker on the back!

Both a Bears and a Packers fan
Those are division rivals. What happens when they play each other twice a year.

Imma casual Packers fan, I really like Aaron Rodgers.
It was great to see the Packers game on TV here in LA for a change instead of scouring the internet for the feeds.
I watched the Cowboys/ Redskins and never laughed so hard over how that ended. Shows how ridiculous football is, more of a circus than a sport.
There is nothing that compares to Angels baseball for me even when the team plays as bad as they have this season. I still enjoyed every bit of it and this blog always enhances the experience. Thanks to all you HH fools that make it so fun. The two minor blog wars I inadvertently started this season were fairly entertaining for me.

ive been a Jacksonville Jaguar fan
ever since their 2nd season when they upset John “wooden teeth” Elway and his Denver Broncos.. and I’ve stuck by them as some former Bruin greats MJD and Mercedes Lewis have been with them a few seasons. BUT due to an epic mancrush on Aaron Rodgers, i find myself rooting for the Pack often. One’s free to have an AFC and NFC team, yes?
BigBangRobbDawgg - September 13, 2010
My family always hated Elway.
We called him Bucky Beaver.

Been a Browns fan since the Kosar years.
If you think Fuentes gave us heartburn, try being a Browns fan for 35 years. Hated Denver for all the smack down they gave the Browns during those years. Now I live in Denver. These people can be tough to take come football season…

how sick would it be if they were the team to move to so cal… i’d be in sports heaven
BigBangRobbDawgg - September 13, 2010
Die-hard Arizona Cardinals fan.
Kinda grew up between Socal and Phoenix, AZ, so things get a little dicey. Hard to admit to being a Cards fan before Whisenhunt got to the desert, but I was.
They’re going to have some growing pains without Warner gunslinging anymore, but at least I don’t have to watch Leinart “manage” his check-downs play after play anymore. I think this years team still has 9 or 10 wins in them, which easily wins the weak NFC West.
I wouldn’t say I’m into the Cards as much as I am into the Angels, but it’s hard to compare for me. Baseball is my favorite sport, but I’m passionate about most sports, so it’s hard for me to not root just as hard during football season as I do during the baseball season.
That being said, GO ANGELS!!!

Dallas Cowboys
i cant believe we lost!……with that being said i think we have a chance to host the Super Bowl this year……that last drive today from Romo showed ALOT! it shows that he is actually finally turning the corner! he is forgetting about his of field stuff that distracted him in the past….Big D got a legit shot!!

I agree
The Cowboys do have a chance to host the superbowl, since its in their stadium. however I’m not so sure they will be playing in the game. tough division and just lost to the weekest team in the division. not a good start

I never really became a die-hard fan of any team . . . I like the Packers, and I like the Chargers, but neither have my fanatical devotion like I give to the Angels, Ducks, or (Cal) Bears. Now, if the Rams were to come back to SoCal, I would be the first to jump back on the bandwagon.

Big Buccaneers fan
I wasn’t a big fan of football as a kid, but as I entered high school I began to find it more interesting. With all of my local teams moved out of the regional area, I looked around the NFL for a team that would build on qualities I enjoyed most. I wanted to root for a team built on defense and smart play-making, a down to earth approach to how football should be played. With the Buccaneers shedding their creamsicle uniforms for the red and pewter and a young defense headed up by Sapp, Nickerson, Brooks, and Barber, I decided that I would follow the Buccaneers.
2002-2003 was a great time to be a fan of the Angels, Bucs, and Lakers, as I was. Heck, even the Ducks won a conference championship in 2003.
Kernel - September 13, 2010
Well
They’re starting off strong so far. Josh Freeman looks like he’s getting a bit more comfortable.
Mike Williams looks like a stud WR. Got him on my fantasy team.

Have adopted the Pats
Living in Boston for 15 years will do that for you. It’s the only New England team I’ve adopted. Maybe I’ll become a Bruins fan someday. That’s as far as I can go.
Inlaws all follow the Chargers, so have a soft spot for them as well.
Also, will root for any Cal Bear in the NFL (except for DeSean Jackson, who’s an ungrateful punk). Probably the only thing I have in common with Michael Silver. Anyway, this also makes me an Aaron Rodgers fan.
righteous halo - September 13, 2010
I watched Rodgers play quite a few times in High School
He was never anything special. He was also about 5’11 and scrawny when he graduated. He was lucky to even make it onto the JC team at Butte College. But then he hit his growth spurt and became “driven” to be a better football player. Walked on over at Cal. Kind of got the starting job by default and then just exploded and the rest is history. He truly is a great QB now.
Moral of the story: Some guys you just can’t scout out of high school, Rodgers was one of them.

how great would it be if in America we drenched opposing teams with urine and vaumit, like they do in football to show their passion?
/joking
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
Ahh you were at that Phillies game too?
Epic Dean - September 13, 2010
haha
forgot about that one. but that wasn’t aimed at the players like they do in football, it was just some stupid kid being an a-hole to another fan. there’s a reason the teams sit in a plastic box with covering in soccer.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
Is it the same reason that the dugout is covered for baseball teams too?
Epic Dean - September 13, 2010
perhaps
but there are dugouts in all levels of baseball, from T-ball up to the majors. in soccer there are only those plastic shields at the highest level, to protect them from the fans.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
Dugouts in Baseball are more like bomb shelters.
Of course there is a lot more danger from play on the field from Baseball than Soccer.
stuck in Romania - September 13, 2010
yeah
I think dugouts are there to not only protect the players from foulballs, but mainly to get the players out of the sun. baseball is a summer sport, and most places that had teams back in the day get really hot during summer. being halfway submerged in the ground is an excellent way to stay cool, as is being covered.
I have no idea if thats why they created dugouts, but it seems logical enough to have been one of the reasons.
in soccer they don’t need cover, except when fans are throwing bags of vaumit at them.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
Because soccer is always played at night or when it's not sunny
PS. What is vaumit?
stuck in Romania - September 13, 2010
It sounds like a word partially derived from "Abreu’s mitt"
Quad Fin Rider - September 13, 2010
vomit
you know what I meant
I’m not really sure what we’re arguing about here. are you saying that soccer fans dont throw vOmit or urine at the opposing teams? because thats all I was saying when you said you wished American sports had the same fanatacism as soccer in Europe.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
I have never seen vomit or piss thrown on a player
in any game I’ve ever attended or watched on tv. I have seen coins thrown at players on the field but never the dugout and security is always quick to find the people that are throwing stuff.
There is a lot of bad stuff that goes down during soccer games across Europe but it’s usually groups of fans that get drunk and fight each other
Epic Dean - September 13, 2010
now that I think about it
the story I heard about the vomit and urine being thrown was when the US played Mexico in Mexico City. I guess I assumed that was how many soccer games were, which was probably a bad assumption.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
I will also say
that I was backpacking thru Europe during the ’06 world cup, and was in italy when they won the final match, and it was truly a great time to be there.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
not sure either....
oh well… Anyway, During my time in Europe I never saw the piss bombs or anything like that… I think all I was saying is that I love the fans how the are totally into the games, march the streets after victories, chant, sing, etc. It’s a great atmosphere that lacks in our entertainment driven culture. Sure we have more lights, hot dog races, music blaring but the fans get more excited about that than the actual game.
Anyway, all is cool,
Your friend,
Buttercup

No offense "stuck in Romania".....(hope Colorado's treating you well)
But soccer sucks. Really bad. Count me amongst the millions of Americans that don’t get it. If I want to watch a tedious sporting event that’ll end in a eventual tie, i’ll watch hockey. If I wanted to watch something boring, i’d watch golf.
halofolife - September 14, 2010
No worries.
Honestly I didn’t think it was worth watching til I was kinda forced to, living in Romania. But once I got into it, I realized that it’s the worlds greatest sport. (next to baseball)… Not for everyone, but for most everyone.
Anyway, Colorado is ok… Beautiful place but quite lonely. Finally gonna move back to SoCal next month. Can’t wait for baseball season to start up again and actually make it to a game or ten.

Was a diehard LA Raiders fan up until Al Davis ditched us & moved the team back north.
Felt totally betrayed by Senile Al & for the first and only time in my life, renounced being a fan of a sports team. All my Raiders hats, jackets. jerseys & other memorabilia were either given away or trashed. My interest in the NFL has been kind of tepid ever since.
Quad Fin Rider - September 13, 2010
NEver really had a team.
Love watching football and playing fantasy football. But, my friend is trying to get me to start liking the Packers, so I’ll probably start following them. Rodgers is a beast and JerMichael too.
angelskid2210 - September 13, 2010
After the Rams and Raiders moved, my dad said "F the NFL"
And being about 7 at the time, I followed his lead. I don’t have a team and refuse to join the Charger Bandwagon.
Whenever a team moves to or gets founded in LA (read City of Industry), I’ll adopt them by default because of their proximity to my hometown and the Angels. The only exception would be if it was the Chargers.
Do you guys think a team coming to LA would change their name? I’d imagine some would.
Commander_Nate - September 13, 2010
I'm hoping and praying
that when a team comes to LA it won’t be the Raiders. any other team will be fine, but if its the Raiders I will not be able to support them. awful owner, awful fans (for the most part).
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
Same here
I wouldn’t mind the Rams coming back, because I would probably be a Rams fan right now if they hadn’t moved. Honestly though, I’d prefer a new team.
My roommate had an internship with the LA Sports Comission a few summers back and according to him, the most likely candidate was the Jaguars.

Why the Charger hatred?
I became a fan in the late 90’s and they’ve broken my heart a few times, but is there any reason to hate?
Halowood - September 13, 2010
I don't hate them necessarily
It’s just the fanbase down here. I grew up in Riverside Co. and nobody up there gave a crap about the Chargers. It didn’t really seem like anyone in SD did either. I moved to SD in ‘06 (I think the Chargers started winning a year or two before) and suddenly there were Charger fans everywhere who, for the most part, didn’t know anything about the team. On top of that, most of the ones I encounter are just…“unorginal” and “vanilla”. For example, wandering PB one Sunday last year, this huge truck rolled by me with a giant sticker that said “DA BOLTS”…it just struck me as a really lame attempt to ripoff the Bears.
Another thing is the often present threat of local blackouts. This is a team that is in playoff contention as regularly as the Angels have been and their “fans” can’t even show up for 8-9 home games. There’s really no excuse for that coming from a winning franchise.
I dunno, I’ve lived here for 4+ years now and I just can’t adopt the Chargers mainly because of the fans. I wanted them to go to the Superbowl last year just for the party that would have been PB, but that’s about the closest I’ll get.
Commander_Nate - September 13, 2010
I met a Charger "fan"...
Who had no idea who Stan Humphries was. It’s the same thing here in Temecula, everybody loves the Chargers. Complete fair weathers for the most part. Still, i’ll take know nothing Charger fan over thug ass Raider “fans” any day of the week.

Denver Broncos fan
Since the Floyd Little days (early ’70s).
The Broncos finally won a championship on my oldest son’s birthday in 1998. And the Angels finally won a championship on my birthday in 2002.

Detroit Lions fan, since my family hails from the Detroit area
although have kept that in the background for a while. so much so that when I mentioned I was a Detroit fan my wife argued about it with me trying to call me out. I had to explain to her that I can’t watch any games except on Thanksgiving, and they’ve won 5 games over the past 3 seasons, so there hasn’t been much to talk about lately. but they’re getting better, and if Calvon Johnson would have hung on to the ball yesterday, I’d be talking about a nice upset over Da Bears.
I will also support any team LA gets, unless its the Raiders.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
I saw that play
That was definitely a touchdown. He had possession all the way through.
angelsownredsux - September 13, 2010
It wasn't a TD
It should be.
But the rule states that if contact is made when the player is in the air he has to maintain control all the way through.
Calvin Johnson “dropped” the ball when he just landed carelessly on it.
Shitty rule but it was properly interpreted.

Before that, I was an Elway/ Denver Broncos fan.
And before that, I was a Steve Young & 49ers fan.
I was born as the son of a LA Rams fan, so I also rooted for Kurt Warner’s Rams during their Super Bowl years. If Sam Bradford can be as good as he’s been early this season, I may have to change my allegiance once Peyton decides to hang it up.
ryanb517 - September 13, 2010
Glad I don't have a true team.
I enjoy watching football, and I have some teams I prefer, but I’m not die hard for any of them. It’s actually kind of nice. What the Angels do on the field determines if I am happy or not a little more than I’d like to admit. Football is nice because I just hope to see a good game, and it doesn’t affect me.
When I was a kid I liked the Bears and the Punky QB, the Bengals, Saints, and the L.A. teams. So, I still sort of root for those teams. I hated the Broncos and Packers (cause they broke Jim McMahon’s arm). I do like Peyton Manning a lot. He seems like the anti-Tom Brady to me. And I liked Tony Dungy as their coach. I also like Kurt Warner from his Ram days. So, I had been rooting for the Cards lately. My dad is a 49ers fan, and I’m happy to see Singletary coaching them.

The Bills have a great chance to go 3-13 this year……..and thats being optimistic.

The Bills suck………and there’s no end in sight.
norcaliangelsfan - September 13, 2010
So here's another question...
…what would be a good name for a new football franchise? We have several teams that moved here with nicknames that sound ridiculous (Lakers, Trolley-Dodgers, Clippers). Even home grown teams have names that seem…not too inspiring (Kings, Ducks).
Perhaps something with a local angle? The Angels are the only local team with reference to the city of Angels (Padres is a bit of a stretch).
Ideas? I’ll go first…the LA Wildfire. Your turn.
sothball - September 13, 2010
could be a sad subject for some
“hey Molly, I know your house got burned down last month, so to take your mind off of things, I scored a couple tix to go see the….ummm…er…..Wildfire. why are you crying????”
I know this isn’t original, but since its a minor league team and not a major league team I bet the NFL could get away with calling it. The Quakes. it holds meaning for the area they reside AND seems like an appropriate name for a football team.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010

Local in that context meant So. Cal.

Gotcha.

LA Wildfire is a pretty cool name
Especially since there aren’t a whole lot bad ass wild animals that are indigenous to So Cal (like Grizzlies, Eagles, Wolves, etc) that we could name a local team after, except maybe the LA Cougars, but that one might have marketing problems.
Quad Fin Rider - September 13, 2010
*cough* California Condor *cough*
Cougars would have pink uniforms and a stilletto for their logo. No way.
Commander_Nate - September 13, 2010
Isn’t a condor just a gigantic ugly vulture?
Just because it’s biggest of its type doesn’t make it any more appealing than what it is. Its sort of like thinking a homely girl suddenly becomes attractive if she weighs over 260lbs.
Quad Fin Rider - September 13, 2010
agreed
plus there are already 4 teams that are birds. Eagles, Cardinals, Seahawks and Falcons. all of those sound way cooler than the Condors…well, except the Seahawks.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
"We will soar majestically over you to victory...
…and devour your rotting corpse of a team".
Seems like it has possibilities.
sothball - September 13, 2010
And damn, do we sure excel at being ugly
Downing Rules - September 13, 2010
Biggest = most badass in the animal kingdom
Nobody’s tryin’ to hump or pet their team (at least I hope not).
Condors have no natural predators because of their size. Besides, they look mean and what’s not cool about a 9 foot wingspan? The team logo could be a silhouette of the bird from below, like you were looking up at it in the sky. For colors you could go with some combo of black, white and blue.
I just can’t think of too many other things related to LA or CA in terms of wildlife.
Commander_Nate - September 13, 2010

No on Wildfire.
Nice try but it sounds like a WNBA name. Plus, I hate the sports team names that don’t end in an ‘s.’ Storm, Galaxy, Gag.
Rally Manatee - September 13, 2010
LA Rush
Even though I just said the name needs to have an ‘s.’ I like the double meaning – it’s a football word, and it has ot do with LA traffic and LA life in general.

I don't like wacky names in football
Since the Jaguars are the team likely to land in LA they shouldn’t change their names.
SportsChicken - September 13, 2010
I'll start caring about the NFL
When the NFL starts caring about LA. It’s the second largest media market in the country, but pro football seems content to leverage it against other local governments in case some owner wants a new parking lot. Well, fuck them all.

Or, Green Bay has the ’Packers. We could be the ’Parkers?

LA is full of bandwagon fans
That’s why the NFL is hesitant to give them a team.
If the team struggles early, they’re doomed.

Raida's fan baby
Since the early 80’s when they picked up my favorite player, Ted “Mad Stork” Hendricks.
Though after yesterday’s game, it looks like a long season again . . .
(At least we got rid of Jafatass Russell).
Well, there’s always the Lakers . . .
Raaddad - September 13, 2010
Campbell
looked almost as bad as Russell yesterday. I felt bad for him. probably just 1st game jitters. plus Tenn has a good defense.
2pintsofbooze - September 13, 2010
Campbell is getting blasted at the Raida's blog
But dude was running for his life! That line is horrible.
We need Bush back asap.
Note to AngelsColts: what happened to your Colts? Wow!
Their crashing and burning was biggest shocker of the season so far (unless KC beats the Bolts tonight)
Raaddad - September 13, 2010
I wouldn't be surprised if the Chargers lost tonight
Shaky starts have been a staple since Norv took over as HC.
Houston looked awesome yesterday. If they keep playing like that they’ll make the playoffs this year
Epic Dean - September 13, 2010
But KC is pretty weak
Still the one team the Raiders can beat (I hope)
Raaddad - September 13, 2010
KC in Arrowhead always scares me

I blame the Angels season on myself: ever since the Rev’s Raaddad Rally video aired, we’ve sucked.

Yeah I think we've gone 20 and 52 since it aired.

Been a Charger fan since their superbowl season
I know, I know. I was 10 and that was the 1st year I got to stay up to watch games(Superbowl kicked off at 1am in Ireland) my dad was rootin for the 9ers so I decided to root against him. Been following the Chargers hardcore ever since
Epic Dean - September 13, 2010
They won a superbowl?
Or are you over-glorifying that 26-49 embarrassment that provided Steve Young and George Seifert with Montana-Walsh-coattail rings?
Downing Rules - September 13, 2010
a win's a win
a ring’s a ring … i missed that superbowl specifically because I knew what was coming – have you ever driven around LA during a superbowl – it is pretty damn vast when it is empty!

surfpunk - September 13, 2010
At a very young age I saw Terry Bradshaw and Joe Green on TV.
Bradshaw was goofy. i was 5 or something. I was a Steelers fan from that point on, through the Bubby Brister/Niel O’donell/Kordell “Can’t learn a play book” Stewert eras. Grew up liking the Chargers and Saints too, Hebert and Swilling were awesome. Also have a soft spot for Boomer’s ol’ Bengals.

DAD OF VLAD - September 13, 2010
Yes, smart man indeed.
If you like constantly underachieving every year. The 9’ers are the anti-Angels of the NFL. For every year that the Angels are picked to do terrible and end up with 90+ wins, the 9’ers are picked to be the best in the west, and end up sucking, even to the extent of losing to the Pete Carroll led Seahawks.
Go CARDINALS!
b0rd3rline - September 13, 2010
Whether we win 10 games or 2 games this season,
I’ll be there each Sunday to root for the guys in Cardinal and Gold.
Just comes with the territory.
Kinda how we’re all still following and commenting on these games within a season that’s pretty much over already.
RexTookMyStash - September 13, 2010
right on
DAD OF VLAD - September 13, 2010
Still 15 games left to play
And the 49ers still have the most talented team in the NFCW.
Too bad the offensive coordinator is a raisin.

Washington Redksins
Inspired by my admiration as a tyke for their history and legendary players. Also, due to my eternal loathing for the Cowturds and their wretched banwagon! By the way, last night’s game was an absolute gas, suck it Romo!

Thankfully, I’m only down by 3 and I have Rice and Mathews goin for me tonight
Epic Dean - September 13, 2010
But did you really expect him to blow up like he did?
I had no idea who he was before yesterday.
angelsownredsux - September 13, 2010
I knew he was gonna do ok
He ran pretty well in preseason. I started Percy Harvin in the flex spot instead of him
Epic Dean - September 13, 2010
ouch
thankfully Percy was on my bench

He looked fantastic in the pre-season.
I didn’t manage to draft him but come on…

Rams Fan
Although not as crazy as I am about my Angels…They had a crappy year last year and the Halos had a good year last year, so I’m only hoping they do a vice versa this year since the Halos under achieved.
Here’s something for any Rams fan out there…or anyone really, LMAO. Enjoy
maze88 - September 13, 2010
I was skeptical of the Bradford pick
But he looks like he’ll be a good QB in the future.

I dont think you have to worry about being called a bandwagon fan of a team that hasnt made the playoffs this decade.
It’s all good.

The outlook for my team this year, slight improvement over last year’s 5-11.

Got to see the final years of Elway playing. Became a fan just like I became a fan of the Angels, by accident. I turned on the t.v. one day, the Broncos were playing and I saw Elway throw the ball. Been a fan ever since.

But it’s only because I find football games to be a bit more special. There’s only 16 a year, after all.

Do I get the last word?.........SEAHAWKS!!!!!
Since 1980 baby. Used to be a Rams fan growing up, but they broke my heart one too many times and I lived in the Seattle area during the Zorn (then Krieg) to Largent glory years.
Started out good this year with a beat-down of the forty-whiners.
