Final Score in Detroit: Angels 4, Tigers 2...

Okay okay okay, Torii Hunter was expressing how bad a strike call was to sight-challenged home plate umpire Ron Kulpa and the brim of his plastic batting helmet tapped against the ump's thick skull. The whiner umpire used this ridiculous pretext to toss the gold gloving all starring community activisting rock and rolling hula dula face of the franchising cleanup hitting Right Fielder.
Immediately following Hunter's ejection, manager Mike Scioscia's on-field protestation earned him an early shower too.
Hunter had homered in the first inning to give Jered Weaver a 2-Run cushion.
Peter Bourjos earned his first major league RBI in the 2nd inning.
Weaver struck out 9 Tigers and allowed 1 ER in 7 IP.
Fernando Rodney and Brian Fuentes each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The Los Angeles electric bill of Anaheim can use a surcharge tonight... Light up the Halo!

Too soon
to start hoping for an extending winning streak?
Solid game by the Halos!

he was just slapping pride in the face!

If this was old school Halos Heaven POTG voting, Torii would win 90-10
Used to be more, how to put it, spiritually based. Just an observation.

I honestly believe that this was calculated as a last ditch fire up the team and definitely deserved a panther.

I voted Torii without a doubt, are you kidding?

He's down 54-45, in a game in which he homered off a great pitcher, and went absolutely apeshit

It could just be that Weave pitched another great game, stopped the bleeding and finally got some support.
I’ll take a solid outing from our #1 that get’s us a W every time over an 8th inning ejection. looked to me more like Torii just blowing off his steam. Didn’t make much if any difference at all to the outcome of the game.
Wally's World - August 7, 2010
I think Torii also had a couple of hits and maybe even a four-bagger...
that’s gotta count for something.

What does it matter?
The Halos are out of it now anyway. Or is this just a bit of schadenfreude?
K. Scott Bailey - August 6, 2010
The Halos still have a chance.
What team you rootin’ for?
Downing Rules - August 6, 2010
I'm a Rangers fan
but I’ve always cheered for the Angels (or the AL West generally, in those years when the As would take it) once the playoffs started. I really don’t know what to do with myself this year, with something other than minor league player development to cheer for in the late summer months! :)
K. Scott Bailey - August 6, 2010
If 1995 can happen against us... it can surely happen in our favor...
I still believe.
Downing Rules - August 6, 2010

vladtheimpaler - August 6, 2010
Wait a sec
I just looked it up to be sure, but the Angels were DOWN by a game in that strike-shortened season. And the Rangers were only 4 1/2 back of the Mariners that year. How does 1995 support your cause?
K. Scott Bailey - August 6, 2010
94 was strike shortened
95 is something Angels fans don’t like talking about.
linkbruin - August 6, 2010
1995 was strike shortened too
Except at the beginning of the season instead of the end like 1994.
ryanfea - August 6, 2010
You're right.
My bad on that. I got the two years mixed up. Why do Angel Fans not like to talk about 95? That was when I was still in school, and before I moved to Texas, so I’m not sure what happened.
K. Scott Bailey - August 6, 2010
Imagine the Angels caught the Rangers at the end of the season this year
And then proceeded to win the 1 game playoff. That’s pretty much what happened to the Angels in 95.
linkbruin - August 6, 2010
Ouch
I had completely forgotten about that comeback by the Mariners. Wow. Sorry for the bad memories…
K. Scott Bailey - August 6, 2010
To this very second,
that is still the biggest claim to fame and crowning achievement that the Mariners’ fans feel in their collective hearts.

Moondoggy - August 7, 2010
Fact is
that the players (ex-Kinsler) are not obnoxious. FO is not arrogant. The fans are actually nice and respectful. Hard team to hate.
Moondoggy - August 7, 2010
Minus the fans at LSB I suppose
ryanfea - August 7, 2010
LSB isn't so bad
I mean, I do more lurking in the comments section here (and at AN) than I do there, but the fans over there are just pumped that the Rangers are finally good. That, and they just can’t seem to resist Rev’s blatant baiting! :)
K. Scott Bailey - August 7, 2010
Ok, so they don't have Bucky as GM anymore to tell their pitchers to throw at guys
and they don’t have Vicente Padilla who would throw at guys’ heads without being told to. Half their team belonged to our team within the past few years, so you may have a point, aside from Kinsler.
opiejeanne - August 7, 2010
When was "Bucky" their GM?
Michael Cave - August 7, 2010
Manager? He might have meant Manager
hk47 - August 7, 2010

hk47 - August 7, 2010
Heh. No problem.
I meant manager, I really did. I got up too damned early yesterday, stupid coyotes, and was still groggy when I posted, even though it was hours later.
We had a coyote again last night, yappin’ and barkin’ right under the window. He knows we have a cat. That was the “Surrender Dorothy!” bark.

Haha
Awesome story. Coyote Hungry.

norcaliangelsfan - August 6, 2010
BTW, nice ejection from TH
I like it when a player stands up to these incompetent umpires and says, “Hell no!” This kind of thing should happen more often.
K. Scott Bailey - August 6, 2010
umpiring has been worse than ever this year
hk47 - August 7, 2010
Ump sucks
Three questionable strike call and then he moves towards both MS and Hunter during the argument. Toss him if you need to but it’s the umpire who’s supposed keep his cool when there’s a argument… that guy was loosing his mind.
grahams98 - August 6, 2010
Weave did a great job tonight (pretty much like every other night for him this year)
But Torii has to be POTG today. He’s probably gonna get fined/suspended for showing the umps that we take no mess.

gameday shows all three pitches as strikes.
Tori Hunter looks like the biggest douche when he tries to act hard.
At least he didn’t push the umpire in the back.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 6, 2010

Gokyle45 - August 6, 2010
There was something said earlier in the game...
Torii said the ump was acting “like a drama queen”
OUCH. That’s gonna be some bad blood in the future, although Torii also said that this ump had thrown him out when Torii was a Twin …
Downing Rules - August 6, 2010
Yep, article and video below
http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100806&content_id=13135102&vkey=news_ana&fext=.jsp&c_id=ana
ryanfea - August 6, 2010
The 1st definitely was not a strike
The 3rd was borderline. The ump overreacted to Torii’s challenge, and then Torii overreacted as a response. I think these guys have a history too.
I think your too quick on douche assessment, but different strokes for different folks I guess.
linkbruin - August 6, 2010
*you're
linkbruin - August 6, 2010
all 3 are strikes on game day
was he not calling it that way earlier in the game?
“i pushed pudge in the back because my knees were tired from running around centerfield”
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 6, 2010
Pitchfx has all 3 as strikes too
I was going off of what I saw while watching. But shit, I’m ok with our players showing emotion now and then. I hate seeing a lackluster environment on the field.
linkbruin - August 6, 2010
Torii's lower end of his strike zone is at 1.75 feet...
so strike three was a ball. I contend that this strike zone is bunk as well.
Downing Rules - August 7, 2010
first and third pitches didn't look like strikes to me
even on replay.
hk47 - August 7, 2010
wow
They didn’t look like strikes on TV.
SportsChicken - August 8, 2010
Gameday showed it as a strike
But IIRC, the umpire wasn’t giving that pitch most of the game.
Gorbachav5 - August 7, 2010
The first pitch slider broke late, Gameday shows it in the zone
But it looked high live and on replay. Third pitch was borderline.

Rev Halofan - August 7, 2010
Has Torii been suspended? I still haven't heard.
opiejeanne - August 7, 2010
Not yet
But it is basically a sure thing because he threw balls out onto the field.
ryanfea - August 7, 2010
Was that Torii?
We laughed a little bit when we heard that the balls had been thrown onto the field, and Terry Smith didn’t confirm who had done it while we were listening, but we might have missed it when we were getting out of the car and moving stuff into the cabin. (Every time we are forced to go down the hill we do a little shopping because some things are simply not available here, or are extremely expensive.)
opiejeanne - August 7, 2010
Yep, it was Torii. I wasn't sure at first either, but watching on MLB Network later, they had a shot of Torii in the dugout throwing a bag of balls onto the field.
~MMP~ - August 7, 2010
Is there video somewhere of the non-incident?
We are roughing it without a tv for at least another week, then we will deal with the vagaries of obtaining MLB so we can watch our beloved Angels while living in Mariner territory.
opiejeanne - August 7, 2010
MLB.com
Has video of the ejection.
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=10703567&query=%26game_pk%3D265435
hk47 - August 7, 2010
Yeah, ryan's right- that's a suspension for sure
I’d guess 3-5 games based on the bumping, then the ball throwing.
I want to know what the ump said to set him off. Torii was quoted on MLB.com saying the umpire “was acting like a drama queen.”
hk47 - August 7, 2010
wonder what the umpire would say tori was acting like?
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 7, 2010
Probably about the same
No love lost between those two.
