Torii Hunter Headbumps Ump; Mea Kulpa Earns Dual Ejection

Final Score in Detroit: Angels 4, Tigers 2...

Star-divide

Okay okay okay, Torii Hunter was expressing how bad a strike call was to sight-challenged home plate umpire Ron Kulpa and the brim of his plastic batting helmet tapped against the ump's thick skull. The whiner umpire used this ridiculous pretext to toss the gold gloving all starring community activisting rock and rolling hula dula face of the franchising cleanup hitting Right Fielder.

Immediately following Hunter's ejection, manager Mike Scioscia's on-field protestation earned him an early shower too.

Hunter had homered in the first inning to give Jered Weaver a 2-Run cushion.

Peter Bourjos earned his first major league RBI in the 2nd inning.

Weaver struck out 9 Tigers and allowed 1 ER in 7 IP.

Fernando Rodney and Brian Fuentes each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Los Angeles electric bill of Anaheim can use a surcharge tonight... Light up the Halo!

Too soon

to start hoping for an extending winning streak?

Solid game by the Halos!

I vote Torii

Somebody needed to do something to fire this team up

This should've happened

If this was old school Halos Heaven POTG voting, Torii would win 90-10

Used to be more, how to put it, spiritually based. Just an observation.

oooh, I feel so old-school!
Can I get an AMEN!
me 2

I honestly believe that this was calculated as a last ditch fire up the team and definitely deserved a panther.

I voted Torii without a doubt, are you kidding?
He's down 54-45, in a game in which he homered off a great pitcher, and went absolutely apeshit
I wanted to vote for both.
I voted Hunter

I guess I’m old school. Been around since before the SBN hostile takeover.

fangraph nerd-nation has taken over

soulless robots who don’t watch baseball (over have played any organized sports in their life), yet fawn over websites that track data is the vogue.

I wish I lived in your world

Everything would just be terrible all the time.

i just ate fruity pebbles

and they are far from terrible.

Cocoa pebbles are funner
delicious.

but stay away from the new cupcake flavored pebbles.

I had some pebble-flavored cupcakes once

I got stoned.

mmmm...fruity pebbles

making me homesick

Silly Moondoggy

Fruity Pebbles are for kids.

Have Trix instead!

It could just be that Weave pitched another great game, stopped the bleeding and finally got some support.

I’ll take a solid outing from our #1 that get’s us a W every time over an 8th inning ejection. looked to me more like Torii just blowing off his steam. Didn’t make much if any difference at all to the outcome of the game.

I think Torii also had a couple of hits and maybe even a four-bagger...

that’s gotta count for something.

oh yah, fergot bout dat 1~

Still gatto giv it te Weave thou, He dezerts et!.

Hunter POTG

Finally a win
it has been awhile
Time to go streaking

Through the quad- let's go!

oh…you meant…never mind.

Bring your green hat.

Is KFC still open?

Weaver was good

but Torii gets POTG. WE DON’T TAKE NO MESS!

10 Ks from WTG...

Torii homers and then goes frothy rabid on the ump… Rodney, well, pitches…

Who says an off year can’t be fun??

Weaver Win

Danny K's?

Scene looks familiar..

Where's Weav's hand?
A's start it off with a triple and double against Lee

Peter hits like a girl.

Voted Weaver for POTG, but re-thinking it should be Torii. I mean, spitting in the umps eye and a home run should be worth something.

ive never wanted the athletics to win a series so much
What does it matter?

The Halos are out of it now anyway. Or is this just a bit of schadenfreude?

The Halos still have a chance.

What team you rootin’ for?

I'm a Rangers fan

but I’ve always cheered for the Angels (or the AL West generally, in those years when the As would take it) once the playoffs started. I really don’t know what to do with myself this year, with something other than minor league player development to cheer for in the late summer months! :)

If 1995 can happen against us... it can surely happen in our favor...

I still believe.

Wait a sec

I just looked it up to be sure, but the Angels were DOWN by a game in that strike-shortened season. And the Rangers were only 4 1/2 back of the Mariners that year. How does 1995 support your cause?

94 was strike shortened

95 is something Angels fans don’t like talking about.

1995 was strike shortened too

Except at the beginning of the season instead of the end like 1994.

You're right.

My bad on that. I got the two years mixed up. Why do Angel Fans not like to talk about 95? That was when I was still in school, and before I moved to Texas, so I’m not sure what happened.

Imagine the Angels caught the Rangers at the end of the season this year

And then proceeded to win the 1 game playoff. That’s pretty much what happened to the Angels in 95.

Ouch

I had completely forgotten about that comeback by the Mariners. Wow. Sorry for the bad memories…

To this very second,

that is still the biggest claim to fame and crowning achievement that the Mariners’ fans feel in their collective hearts.

Ugh

It’s even more depressing than I thought…which is a quite a bit.

THIS

is a point about the scenario that I had never heard before….

It’s interesting to also note that if the Mariners had blown that playoff game, because the Angels played so badly that the M’s opened up a three-game lead at one point, the ’95 Mariners would rank 13th on this list.

Very Interesting!

Yeah I've pretty much blocked out everything from that season
"The Halos still have a chance".

So do the Mariners.

It matters because it's the effin' Rangers.

We hates ’em, Precious.

I don't hate the Rangers.

Sorry to say. They haven’t earned my hatred yet. It may take a few years of real rivalry for them to get there.

I feel the same.

String together more winning seasons, then it might be a real rivalry.

me2
Fact is

that the players (ex-Kinsler) are not obnoxious. FO is not arrogant. The fans are actually nice and respectful. Hard team to hate.

Minus the fans at LSB I suppose
LSB isn't so bad

I mean, I do more lurking in the comments section here (and at AN) than I do there, but the fans over there are just pumped that the Rangers are finally good. That, and they just can’t seem to resist Rev’s blatant baiting! :)

Ok, so they don't have Bucky as GM anymore to tell their pitchers to throw at guys

and they don’t have Vicente Padilla who would throw at guys’ heads without being told to. Half their team belonged to our team within the past few years, so you may have a point, aside from Kinsler.

When was "Bucky" their GM?
Manager? He might have meant Manager
She meant Manager.
Haha, whoops!

Sorry opie! Please forgive

Heh. No problem.

I meant manager, I really did. I got up too damned early yesterday, stupid coyotes, and was still groggy when I posted, even though it was hours later.

We had a coyote again last night, yappin’ and barkin’ right under the window. He knows we have a cat. That was the “Surrender Dorothy!” bark.

Haha

Awesome story. Coyote Hungry.

nice to win a game
BTW, nice ejection from TH

I like it when a player stands up to these incompetent umpires and says, “Hell no!” This kind of thing should happen more often.

umpiring has been worse than ever this year
Ump sucks

Three questionable strike call and then he moves towards both MS and Hunter during the argument. Toss him if you need to but it’s the umpire who’s supposed keep his cool when there’s a argument… that guy was loosing his mind.

Weave did a great job tonight (pretty much like every other night for him this year)

But Torii has to be POTG today. He’s probably gonna get fined/suspended for showing the umps that we take no mess.

KAZ IS PITCHING TOMORROW?????

UGH!

he was once good.

We can’t be sure which one we are getting back.

So ... why was Tori upset?

gameday shows all three pitches as strikes.

Tori Hunter looks like the biggest douche when he tries to act hard.
At least he didn’t push the umpire in the back.

If anyone had beef

it was gahzirrah for his strike 3 call.

the smile machine played himself

MLB Network will interview him in about 1 minute

If you dont have MLBN, it’ll be on mlb.com by tommorow.

There was something said earlier in the game...

Torii said the ump was acting “like a drama queen”

OUCH. That’s gonna be some bad blood in the future, although Torii also said that this ump had thrown him out when Torii was a Twin …

The 1st definitely was not a strike

The 3rd was borderline. The ump overreacted to Torii’s challenge, and then Torii overreacted as a response. I think these guys have a history too.

I think your too quick on douche assessment, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

all 3 are strikes on game day

was he not calling it that way earlier in the game?

“i pushed pudge in the back because my knees were tired from running around centerfield”

Pitchfx has all 3 as strikes too

I was going off of what I saw while watching. But shit, I’m ok with our players showing emotion now and then. I hate seeing a lackluster environment on the field.

Torii's lower end of his strike zone is at 1.75 feet...

so strike three was a ball. I contend that this strike zone is bunk as well.

first and third pitches didn't look like strikes to me

even on replay.

wow

They didn’t look like strikes on TV.

Gameday showed it as a strike

But IIRC, the umpire wasn’t giving that pitch most of the game.

The first pitch slider broke late, Gameday shows it in the zone

But it looked high live and on replay. Third pitch was borderline.

love torii

but that move last year was so bitch-made

no it wasnt

and plus that move he made at Pudge was 2 years ago

that is bitch made

said it when it happened, and I’ll say it again.

bitch maaaaaaaaaaade.

tori is about as tough as ice cream

bitch move.

don’t even argue that one. shoving pudge when his back is turned is embarrassing.

ok it was i was juss joking gotta defend my boy tho haha
this looks familiar...
Did we win?

Hooray! I’m an Angels fan again!

Torii is a badass
Sweet. I love Torii...
Whatd the five fingers say to the face??

SLAP BITCH!!!! That’s what torii should’ve done lol…

It is sad watching the decline of Godzilla

Just like seeing a sloth-like Ali with Holmes or Namath on his last legs with the Rams.

Scioscia is so awesome!

How many times have we seen this exact thing?- Mike getting tossed defending his players

Seems like every time an Angel gets tossed he goes right along with him. So great.

Interesting

The AP caption has the wrong jersey number for Hula Dula. Shame he won’t be in the lineup tomorrow (?)

I think he'll probably appeal his suspension

So he might still play tomorrow

Bootcheck's 49

the uniform is ruffled and the poor AP caption writer went with what he or she saw

Has Torii been suspended? I still haven't heard.
Not yet

But it is basically a sure thing because he threw balls out onto the field.

Was that Torii?

We laughed a little bit when we heard that the balls had been thrown onto the field, and Terry Smith didn’t confirm who had done it while we were listening, but we might have missed it when we were getting out of the car and moving stuff into the cabin. (Every time we are forced to go down the hill we do a little shopping because some things are simply not available here, or are extremely expensive.)

Yep, it was Torii. I wasn't sure at first either, but watching on MLB Network later, they had a shot of Torii in the dugout throwing a bag of balls onto the field.
Is there video somewhere of the non-incident?

We are roughing it without a tv for at least another week, then we will deal with the vagaries of obtaining MLB so we can watch our beloved Angels while living in Mariner territory.

Yeah, ryan's right- that's a suspension for sure

I’d guess 3-5 games based on the bumping, then the ball throwing.

I want to know what the ump said to set him off. Torii was quoted on MLB.com saying the umpire “was acting like a drama queen.”

wonder what the umpire would say tori was acting like?
Probably about the same

No love lost between those two.
