almost 2 years ago: BALTIMORE - AUGUST 04: Ervin Santana #54 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitches against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on August 4 2010 in Baltimore Maryland. (Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images)
Final Score in Baltimore: Orioles 9, Angels 7

The magic is gone. Ervin Santana might have a case of dead arm, or his arm might be dead. The Orioles took batting practice off of the Angels number 3 starter. Peter Bourjos got his first major league hit and stole his first major league base. It was the second straight game where Ervin dug an early grave. He was the Quality Start Loser of the first half and now he is the lodestone of holedigging tomato tossers.
Sure, the Angels bats came alive and mounted a valiant comeback but, at 8 games back with 52 to play, results are all that count and all those bats got us was big L unless they can somehow be banked for 2011. Last night it was the bullpen, tonight it was the starting itching, I predict we get shut out tomorrow for the blame everyone trifecta.
I challenge anyone who Tivo'd or DVR's the postgame show to find a single sentence of baseball analysis in there that expanded your knowledge or understanding of the game - in fact, since the excuse for the garbage FSN produces is that they want to appeal to a wide base of low IQ sports numbnuts, check out your recording of the postgame show and pull a single sentence in there that, if you had to explain the game to a European who wanted to understand it better or a little leaguer who was enthused about the sport but had no comprehension of the nuances - I dare ya to find anything of value, and tripe like "stringing together hits" and "momentum carrying over" don't count.
And yeah, Torii Hunter was dumb dumb dumb for trying to steal 3B in the 9th inning - inexcusably dumb - but if career average Santana shows up tonight the Hunter stupidity is a non-issue. There is classic Angels aggressive and just dumb baserunning. Torii is not the first of these two.

We could've won this game
Freaking Torii trying to steak third…
ryanfea - August 4, 2010
Mmmmmmm
3rd steak
Epic Dean - August 4, 2010
If you can eat all of the third one, do you get it for free?
agent_99 - August 4, 2010
+1
My spellin ain’t what it used ta be
ryanfea - August 4, 2010
It certainly wasn't well done!
Quad Fin Rider - August 4, 2010
Right
Ive read a lot of his posts…typos are fairly rare.
dr-awkward - August 4, 2010
Is there any way we can blame Torii?
His debacle probably didn’t matter in the end, but OMFG, why? After it happened, all I could say is “Oh no Torii, what have you done?”
Halowood - August 4, 2010
I love the guy, Torii is my absolute favorite on this team
but he can forget any dreams of being a GM. Nobody will ever pay him to think if he keeps doing stupid shit like he did tonight.
Quad Fin Rider - August 4, 2010
It could very well have mattered.
If Jaun get;‘s that hit with on, it’s 9-8 with a runner in scoring, less than 2 out.
Wally's World - August 4, 2010
Torii Hunter could be the dumbest player in the history of organized baseball.
That play in the ninth inning was as inexcusable as it gets.
I have a feeling Rev. slept through this game or he would’ve ripped him one.
bc56274 - August 4, 2010
i added it
poll needs a village idiot
Rev Halofan - August 4, 2010
Thanks.
I don’t think he’s the blame of the game, but that was the bonehead play of the season, without a doubt.
bc56274 - August 4, 2010
Torii getting thrown out trying to steal third...
…is the worst baseball play I have ever seen, bar none. If I were Scioscia, I would bench him. There is NO REASON to do that. Period. His run means nothing. The only time you do that is when you’re on first to avoid the double play, and he’s on second. He could just stand on the base and not take a lead at all.
This pains me so much, because I love Torii. But that was just moronic.
Tom Servo 93 - August 4, 2010
Nah, he's a superstar - An allstar!
He can only help this club. How dare you…
RedFog - August 4, 2010
So, I hope the Rangers lose again today
It will make the pain of today seem more tolerable.
Halowood - August 4, 2010
does knowing we'd be 6 back, if the angels could win, make it all the more painful?
clover_black - August 4, 2010
lol a little yes. If we miraculously learn to hit with RISP and our bullpen holds, we could still win.
Halowood - August 4, 2010
Why is Rivera still playing?
He is on a 24 hour siesta!
Swanberg1 - August 4, 2010
Because he hits better than Matsui
Epic Dean - August 4, 2010
Not even CLOSE..
Swanberg1 - August 4, 2010
This year they are pretty much even...
ryanfea - August 4, 2010
Torii, slap pride in the face and realize you cant steal a base, old man.
clover_black - August 4, 2010
But i'm All-Star Torii "Big Game" Hunter
I dont need to read no stinkin signs from no 3rd Base Coach Imma Superstar.
deejayelleseven - August 4, 2010 via mobile
That isn't Torii's attitude at all, jack ass.
Where have you been the last two days? The man just handed over his position to a late season call-up rookie, even though he’s won 9 gold gloves there. He has never had an “Imma Superstar” mentality.
He’s just a stupid base runner.
Rally Manatee - August 4, 2010
As he should
Maybe he should let his game do the talking and be a leader ala. Vladdy or Erstad instead of cracking jokes and always being one if the first persons to get interviewed and more concerned about being MC for the All-Star Game etc. All that other stuff is good if you have actually won a ring already.
deejayelleseven - August 4, 2010 via mobile
Or your teams a good amount of games up in first place
deejayelleseven - August 4, 2010 via mobile
wait wait wait....
just saw the game recap… the guy actually got caught stealing 3rd with no outs and down by 2 runs in the 9th… His run meant nothing. Him even being allowed to steal is on Soth. Of course Hunter is an idiot for even going, but he shouldn’t even be allowed to go….
MH252525 - August 4, 2010
I actually stopped watching around the rain delay so i have no idea what im talking about...
but… torii needs to not run. even if sosh tells him to.
clover_black - August 4, 2010
Torii's like a kid around a cookie jar
he just can’t resist temptation
Raaddad - August 4, 2010
Can we just close left field?
Swanberg1 - August 4, 2010
I'm comfortable with sending Bourjos by himself in the outfield
ryanfea - August 4, 2010
Great call
Kid seems to be too young to be scared.
Swanberg1 - August 4, 2010
im on a flight to Baltimore
im playing Left Field
Angels_48 - August 4, 2010
Permanent stop sign...
should now be in place for Torii.
Wytelitning - August 4, 2010 via mobile
Oh and how about 2011?
LF Crawford
2B Kendrick
1B Morales
RF Hunter
DH Abreu
3B Callaspo
C Napoli
SS Aybar
CF Bourjos
Bench: Maicer, Willits, Mathis, Rivera
Rotation: Weaver, Haren, Santana, PiƱeiro, Kazmir
Bullpen: Rodney, Jepsen, Bulger, Thompson, Kohn, Palmer, Bell
DFA’d Wood. Traded Wilson and Stokes. Walden, Rodriguez, Frandsen, Conger and Petit all in AAA and make appearances with the team. Payroll stays about the same. Looks like a better team to me.
Halowood - August 4, 2010
All but Rivera
Swanberg1 - August 4, 2010
everyone needs power off the bench
Halowood - August 4, 2010
Rivera is too lazy to get off the bench
Swanberg1 - August 4, 2010
I've seen him in the weight room he works hard and puts the time in....
He’s just too timid a person after breaking his leg. No longer has that OF baseball instinct. He plays a little afraid now.
Halowood - August 4, 2010
That team might compete for second place.
bc56274 - August 4, 2010
Oh come on, if we added Crawford, Bourjos, Morales and Haren to this team, this year
We wouldn’t be trailing by 8 games.
Halowood - August 4, 2010
Bc5, etc.,
will denigrate this team no matter what, it seems.
I can imagine what he said after we won the Series in ’02:
“Damn. It took us seven games! What the hell?!!!”
Raaddad - August 4, 2010
A sweep would have been preferred.
bc56274 - August 4, 2010
No one knows how Morales will hit when he returns.
This wasn’t a first place team when he was in the lineup.
You’ve just sketched the 2010 club as it stands today with Crawford and a question mark at firstbase.
Not enough to take the division, and an injury or two away from the .500 club we are now.
Turks Teeth - August 4, 2010 via mobile
Thanks for shutting off the light at the end of the tunnel
Kendry will be fine, but what worries me the most is what to do about our bullpen, other than an extreme makeover. We need some big changes or we will indeed “not have enough to take the division.”
Raaddad - August 4, 2010
Then you agree with me.
We’re in the dark, searching for a lightswitch. There’s no tunnel in this metaphor, save for the one we’ll need to dig to get out of this collapsed coalmine.
Turks Teeth - August 5, 2010 via mobile
As long as I can come out of this with a few chunks of gold to build up my future dynasty
Soth, Weave, Haren, Kowbell, Gorgeous, Rocking Rodney (oops…), Troutster, etc.
Raaddad - August 5, 2010
I'd switch Aybar and Kendrick in the line-up.
I think Aybar does better batting 2nd and Kendrick does better in the bottom half of the line-up.
Robviously - August 4, 2010
Both need to be batting at the bottom.
deejayelleseven - August 4, 2010 via mobile
So does Bourjos
But you can’t hide everybody in the 8-9 spots. Aybar responds better to the top of the lineup than Kendrick though.
RallyMonkey5 - August 5, 2010
I say we get something more of value in the bullpen
We have to do better than Bell and Palmer in those last spots
ryanfea - August 4, 2010
I dunno, Bell is showing some promise lately and Palmer was VERY effective in relief.
Lots of late movement and he can spot it.
Halowood - August 4, 2010
Bell might be our #5 starter
It’s no sure thing that Kazmir will ever deserve a rotation spot again.
RallyMonkey5 - August 5, 2010
Therefore, Palmer is our #4?
Raaddad - August 5, 2010
Please shut up about Crawford.
Just give it a rest for a while.
Rally Manatee - August 4, 2010
Especially since he's gonna be on the Yanks.
Fred Fredrix - August 4, 2010
the thing about the "CRAWFORD CROWD"
Same bunch was pining to sleep with Teixeira and bitched that Arte was cheap when he went to NYC, all badmouthed or ignored Kendry along the way.
Rev Halofan - August 4, 2010
Wrong!
I may be in the Crawford crowd, but I was among the first who lobbied for Kendry Morales at 1B. Even when Kotch was going good I was torn a new one on another board for claiming Kendry Moraes was better than Casey Kotchman and Howie Kendrick would never win a batting championship.
When I saw that 180 million dollar price tag on tex, I breathed a sigh of relief. Tex is a liar for sure, if he was really thinking what was best for his family, he wouldn’t have chosen the Bronx that’s for sure. However, the Angels couldn’t and should have approached that price tag, were by far the best team in the West, had a great option in Kendry and I was all the more excited.
This is completely different, you must recognize that. We simply don’t have a good option for LF. We need someone who gets into scoring position quite often because our middle of the order guys tend to fail a lot. More opportunites = more runs= more wins. On top of which the defense an OF of Crawford, Bourjos and Hunter could provide would be unbelievably refreshing in comparison to this year. And with Kendry coming back we should be better at plating those RISP. But it all starts with someone getting on 2B, and not many do it better than Carl Crawford.
The thing about the “Rev Crowd” is they always assume players can be categorized, as can fans and automatically assume they are right and are quick to inform those of them being right. Have I been wrong? Sure, with Wood and Shea Hillenbrand. Kohn, well we’ll see. But I’ve also been right too.
Halowood - August 4, 2010
What about Figgy?
Wasn’t he too old or something? how old will Crawford be? How much money do you all want to give to a ‘ageing’ outfielder.?
Wally's World - August 4, 2010
Aging.....He's going to be 30.
And he’s a LF, a position which does not require a great deal of range, something Crawford has and would still have even if he were to lose a step. I wouldn’t hesitate to sign that man to a 4 year deal.
Halowood - August 4, 2010
Crawford will probably end up getting a 5-6 year deal.
~MMP~ - August 4, 2010
Well if that's the case then count me among those who will suggest steering clear.
I don’t trust hitters over the age of 34 unless they’ve been enhanced a la Barry Bonds. Even then, I don’t think I want them.
Halowood - August 5, 2010
Crawford is 28
So sign him to a 6 year deal and you get ages 29-34. You never have to worry about what he’ll be after 34.
RallyMonkey5 - August 5, 2010
Bottom line
We can’t afford Crawford. Keep dreaming….
LosAngel - August 4, 2010
All but Kazmir.
dr-awkward - August 4, 2010

Raaddad - August 4, 2010
That lineup looks like next year will be another year with a limp offense.
I’d like to see hitters with a better ability to get on base than your 1 & 2 and more power than your 4 through 6.
snowhor - August 4, 2010 via mobile
That's pretty much the same team we have now
Plus Carl Crawford. He still can’t pitch the ninth inning, no matter how much you pay him.
Suboptimal - August 5, 2010
Kaleb Cowart....any news on him?
I heard we offered him 1.5 million, and he didn’t completely say no. But he did tweet or FB that he had a great time visiting with FSU coaches. I wonder if we offer him 2.25?
Halowood - August 4, 2010
Yes Torii made a bonehead play.
But without his 4-5 today we don’t get within 4 runs.

The worst team in baseball. Their bullpen gave up 6 runs to our crappy offense. And our silly bullpen were able to shut them down tonight. Yet we still screw up enough to lose again.

Coulda woula shoulda...
As a fan whose been around long enough to have asked manager Jim Fergosi when they were gonna start winning again(disgruntled fan already at 7)I’ve built up a bit of a tolerance to the utter disappointment I feel w/this team sometimes. But something I can never get over is leaving your starting pitcher in when u KNOW he doesn’t have it. Santana staggered thru his last start and in this game he just fell over. It’s ok to have the quick hook every now and then just like it’s ok to go against the now defunct pattern of pulling your starter too soon to get your 3 different relievers in. Escpecially if said relievers are garbage now. Feels like the late 80’s all over again…“sigh”
aces666high - August 4, 2010
First off,
This team, healthy, is waaaayyyyy better than the ‘90s. Secondly, what’s Fergosi say back?
Figgi4life - August 4, 2010 via mobile
He says:
“My name’s not Fergosi!”
rspencer - August 5, 2010
Agree: Why did Scioscia leave Santana in the game as long as he did?
Maybe just an example of how this team has given up. Why not just leave your starting pitcher who’s getting torched stay in the game? What’s the big deal?

Angel Upgrade Needed
It is about time the Angels upgraded their line up. Time to cut Kazmir who is
an expensive waste of a pitcher. I still cannot understand why the Angels
signed him! Picking up Haren is good but, the Angels need two good hitters
in their line up. Letting go of Vlad Guerrero is one big blunder. Adding Matsui
and Callaspo is not good enough as already seen. The Padres added Tejada
and Ludwick which is pretty good move. Why can’t the Angels sign two good
hitter and insert them in the line up. Despite failing in the post season playoffs
the past how many seasons, the Angels still have not added much needed
offense which is why they continue to lose in the post season. Losing this
season is probably the best thing that happened to the Angels. Maybe, just
maybe, Reagins will wake up and make the changes to upgrade the Angels
line up. Making do with the line up you have is not a very good plan.
JimmyBlue - August 4, 2010
We need to trade for Pujols.
Wally's World - August 4, 2010
So much whining around here
How do you define “failing in the post season playoffs the past how many seasons”? If your definition is not winning a World Series from 2003 to 2009, then yes, I suppose we failed. Last year, we swept the Red Sox and went 6 games with the world champs. Most sane people would not refer to that as failure.
Brody - August 5, 2010

why not promote Jim Eppard to hitting coach?
bighig - August 4, 2010
Abso-friggin-lootely.
Clearly Hatcher was the reason Hunter was caught wandering so far off of second base it almost appeared he was trying to steal third.
And Clearly Hatcher’s idiotic hat wearing had Santana so distracted he found it impossible to pull his head out of his ass and pitch at least to the level of Kazmir.
And those 17 hits on offense? Suck it. Any normal team would have had, what, 34?

Torii's reaction to his CS
“That was stupid,” Hunter said softly. “That was so stupid. Can’t take it back, killed the rally, terrible. They teach you that in Little League — don’t make the first out at third. [It] might have been the dumbest thing I’ve done in years.”
and Scioscia’s comments
“There’s no real advantage to that, Torii doesn’t feel good about that,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “He’s playing aggressive, he’s trying, but if there’s a time when, obviously, there’s more of an advantage — right there, there’s less of an advantage — and obviously the risk isn’t on our side.”

What would we have to trade to get Gonzalez? They probably don’t do the deal without Trout, and that is a no-sale. It’s kind of a waste though, as both Gonzalez and Morales are good defenders at first. How about Adam Dunn instead?
You improve the offense just as much, and Dunn’s lack of defense doesn’t hurt us at DH.
