Final Score in Baltimore: Angels 3, Orioles 6

Sean "Chone" Smith aka RallyMonkey5 had a front row seat to see our blow pen watching Peter Bourjos break out the #25 jersey and roam about in CF...
The Angels number 4/5 Starter, Trevor Bell, pitched great for 5 and a third innings, but an early hook from Mike Scioscia after a BB led to a bullpen implosion by Francisco "Naugles" Rodriguez and later Michael "Wrath of Halowood" Kohn.
The anemic Angels offense saw all of its scoring involving a suddenly hot Howie Kendrick, who hit a 2 run home rot open the scoring and later came home on a Mike Napoli single after doubling deep to left.
Peter "Whiskey Pete" Bourjos made his major league debut and looked good in the field, especially after watching Bobby Abreu waddle around in Left Field like the spawn of a fat walrus mated with read-feathered penguin.
Bourjos coverage in CF put a ghastly glare on just how slow the thirtysomething outfield defense of the Angels has been this season. For the UZR set, this was already calculated into the mix, but with even Torii Hunter capitulating on his defensive position and moving from Center to RF to make way for Whiskey Pete, the "gotta see it with my own eyes" crowd had to acknowledge that this team has suffered extra run bleeding at the cement shoes of its outfield D.

Damn, Bourjos couldn’t fix everything that’s wrong with our team? What the hell??

hahahha, god. our bullpen and terrible defense…. what happened to us between this year and last year to have our defense go downhill so badly?!
we aren’t even doing any of the fundamentals….
Definitely done believing this year is gonna happen

kohn looks frightened out there.

Werd, from the UZR set.
2010 UZR/150 (min 50 innings at position)
Reggie Willits (LF): +30.6
Juan Rivera (LF): -3.3
Torii Hunter (CF): -5.6
Bobby Abreu (RF): -10.0
Juan Rivera (RF): -48.9
Hideki Matsui (LF): -52.3
That’s pretty clear.
UZR/150: “The number of runs above or below average a fielder is, per 150 defensive games.”
Turks Teeth - August 3, 2010
I wish I understood these numbers
RexTookMyStash - August 3, 2010
There's a little description at the bottom.
Take a league average player, put him at that defensive position for 150 regular season games. Consider him the baseline.
A player with a +25 UZR/150 means that player saves you 25 runs over a 150 game stretch with his glove – relative to a completely average player.
A player with a -25 UZR/150 means that player costs you 25 runs over a 150 game stretch with his glove – relative to a completely average player.
So Rivera in LF and Torii in CF are just a tick below league average at this point. If it were just about range, Rivera would suck, but he makes up for some of that with his arm, as he has a disproportionately high number of outfield assists.
UZR really likes Willits in LF, doesn’t like him so much in CF. It thinks Matsui blows chunks on the field, and Abreu is below average in right.
All this pretty much jives with what your eyes tell you, no?
Turks Teeth - August 3, 2010
Awesome. Thanks for the explanation.
RexTookMyStash - August 3, 2010
And yes, yes it jives.

Broken record is broken.
And the excuses on the air are laughable.
Then again, so is the team.
RedFog - August 3, 2010
Sweet I made the front cover of a post game report......
What I gathered from the game…..
- Trevor Bell may have a future in the back end of the rotation.
- Francisco Rodriguez is no sure thing.
- My man crush Mike Kohn, is looking like more time in the minors would do him good. His slider is leveling out, he can’t control the corners, it’s ugly right now. He still has a future as a late inning reliever. It just might not be this year.
- Peter Bourjos is fast and plays CF as shallow as anyone I’ve ever seen, which all the more speaks to his unbelievable range.
- Bobby Abreu is the worst fielding OF I have ever seen. Even Vladdy last year was better than this.
- This team simply doesn’t belong in the race and that’s why we’re fading. Izturis hitting 2nd is bad, Abreu hitting 3rd is worse, Hunter’s a clean up hitter who will hover around 20-25 HR’s which is pathetic, Matsui is awful in the 5 hole. There’s simply no way this team can win while Abreu is in the field and Matsui’s in the middle of the lineup.
Halowood - August 3, 2010
I kohncur.
clover_black - August 3, 2010
I Kohncur too.
I also agree with your post.
sheisalovelyladyandmyapologiestoher - August 3, 2010
what???
saying: “we dont belong in the race and that’s why were fading” is illogical. how in the hell does that make sense?
Due to our “undeserved-ness” we our losing. do you realize how much of a tool you sound like sometimes?
I’m glad your an avid angels fan but damn halowood, you make yourself out to be some sort of expert and its clear as looking through freshly windexed glass that you’re not…
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - August 3, 2010 via mobile
Nawww, your man-crush on Kohn is well placed
forget Salt Lake, this season is done anyway and I’d like to see him get more opportunities pitching against the big boys. I do not want him rotting away in AAA like overripe fruit (aka, Brandon Wood) and think when it comes to sink or swim time, Kohn is going to ultimately swim.
Quad Fin Rider - August 3, 2010
This team is such a tease!
But I’m encouraged for next year!
angelskid2210 - August 3, 2010 via mobile
We're on the right track
I was overjoyed to see the lineup listing Bourjos in center and Hunter in right. Now we’ve got two outfield positions that are above average. Orioles found the weak link though as a popup landed in front of Bobby’s feet (looking very Juan-like) for the final Oriole run. Bourjos was 0-3, but at least he put the bat on the ball, that’s an improvement on our last big propsect. Give him time. Torii took to his new position well, gunning down a runner in the 9th.
We aren’t going to fix everything in a day, but this is a good start instead of taking a .500 team and just hoping they do better next year even as everyone is a year older.
Torii deserves all the credit in the world for volunteering for a switch. I love the quote he had about pride. It makes me think he talked with Marcellus Wallace before the game:
“When you run out to right, you might feel a slight sting. That’s pride fuckin’ with you. Fuck pride! Pride only hurts, it never helps. You fight through that shit. ‘Cause a year from now, when you’re flying another flag, you gonna say to yourself, “Marcellus Wallace was right.”

lol Rev’s write ups are always better after losses for some reason.

Well . . . we may see a lot of good write-ups the rest of the season then . . .
ouch

we can’t even beat the Orioles… or should I say Oreos?
Wow, we ca’t even eat the Oreos!

I know I'm dating myself...
…but I remember back in the day there was a chain out here in SoCal called Pup ’n Taco or spelled something like that.
Man, on the way to Winnetka (sp?) drive-in’s, the family would stop at a Pup ‘n Taco and I’d get a couple of their “tostada” meal items. It probably is as much of an insult to tostada dishes around the world as the Jack in the Box taco is to…well anything called food.
But it tasted damn good and is one of those obscure food chains I miss. :/
RedFog - August 3, 2010
Pup 'n' Taco
Great Slushies.
Funke5ive - August 4, 2010
now largely converted to Tommy Burgers joints. And Del Taco destroyed Naugles by buying them out.
firebird81 - August 4, 2010
the internet says, Taco Bell bought them in 1984
and although I don’t remember Pup n Taco… I do miss me some Naugles.
daze - August 4, 2010
Pup'N'Taco used to be at the corner of Fallbrook and Saticoy.
It’s now a Taco Hell.
When I was in STL for college, we used to make midnight Naugles runs. Then later they merged with Del Taco (remember “Viva Naugles! Viva Del Taco!” ?)

Pitiful
You would think we’d all be used to Mike pulling the starter too soon. It’s been happening for years now. But Every Single Damn time it happens all you can do is shake your head and wait for one of our “relievers” to blow up. Whopping 3 runs too. Typical loss for this year.
aces666high - August 3, 2010
Don't blame Sosh for the early pull
I’m surprised Bell got as far as he did. He’s been in the bullpen for a while and never had the chance to get stretched out in AAA. But it does suck that the bullpen still sucks.
The ball that Scott hit off K-Rod II would not have been catchable for Torii even if he was sitting in the bleachers with me. That was a bomb.
RallyMonkey5 - August 4, 2010 via mobile
i was there too...
that was a bomb. gone when he swung. i was behind home plate. liked how p.b. looked, he wasn’t afraid to take some pitches and pretty much looked comfy hitting.
chickendinner - August 4, 2010
Texas is looking like crap in Seattle
Aside from the loss tonight. I still have hope for this season.
Saw some good things tonight, and some bad things. Didn’t really expect too much from Bell so I’m not exactly distraught. Also, good to have some speed in the outfield.
Season’s not ever yet kids.

Hopefully this squelches all the myopic optimism for the rest of the season.
Let’s focus on 2011.
This current roster is too fundamentally flawed to do anything other than play .500 baseball.
bc56274 - August 3, 2010
over or under .500
i think one game over
DAD OF VLAD - August 3, 2010
I'm not sure.
I’m not sure.
Once teams come to grips with the facts they are out of it, they often taper off.
That could equal a 75 win season.
bc56274 - August 3, 2010
I said the first line twice for emphasis!
bc56274 - August 3, 2010
It worked!
Robviously - August 3, 2010
Just make sure we get a top 15 draft pick.
We’ll really need the guys to focus. Some of these games will be must-lose.
Robviously - August 3, 2010
Yeah, we could use another blue-chip prospect like Brandon Wood.
bc56274 - August 3, 2010
Would you take another Jered Weaver?

ZERO!!!
bc56274 - August 3, 2010
lol no where to go but up!
robi s - August 4, 2010
haha i don’t think its being myopic hoping the Halos still win. I’m well aware of the fact that we’re out of it. Our defense, offense, and bullpen are no where near where they need to be to even have a chance.
I do hope our guys still get their shit together and end the season the right way. That way TR can see which guys just had horrendous seasons, and which players really just don’t have the ability to get it done.
As far as focusing on 2011….. I’m not really sure what you want us to do… we can only gush about having Weaver 1 and Haren 2 for so long lol
robi s - August 4, 2010
Trout hit his first HR at Rancho tonight.
He continues to be the most exciting thing going for Angels fans in 2010….

I don't know...
My Matsui Snuggie is pretty cool.
Funke5ive - August 4, 2010
hahah sadness, the beginning of this season started off so optimistically… wood was supposed to show what he could do, and Matsui would keep playing like the WS MVP….
He hit like 2 hrs in that opening series didnt he?

The disease is called Bullpennis Suckitis
and it’s infected every freaking reliever who dares step into the pen
