Angels call up outfield prospect Peter Bourjos - latimes.com
Though Juan Rivera had the team's top batting average (.319) in July and drove in four runs in Friday night's win over Texas, the Angels have been unhappy with his sluggish play in left field. In anticipation of a possible switch, the Angels moved Bourjos, a 10th-round pick in 2005, from center field to left field at Salt Lake last week.
Two things need to happen; 1) Bourjos needs to play, and 2) he needs to continue his hot hitting.

Angels-Orioles Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
Baltimore's Jeremy Guthrie (4-11, 4.23) looks for another solid start in the series opener. He is 1-1 with a 1.31 ERA in three outings since the All-Star break after giving up one run and six hits over seven innings of Wednesday's 5-0 loss at Toronto. Guthrie is 1-2 with a 4.79 ERA in five starts against Los Angeles, which will counter with Trevor Bell (1-2, 6.46). Making his first start since Aug. 28, the right-hander was tagged for four runs and eight hits in 3 1-3 innings of a 6-4 loss at Texas on July 25. Bell was sent to Triple-A Salt Lake following that start but was called up Friday when he threw one inning of scoreless relief in a 9-7 win over Texas. This will be the first time Bell faces Baltimore.
The Angels need to "beat up" on the weaker teams in the A.L., starting with the Orioles, if they have any chance of getting back into the division race. (Obvious guy is obvious)
What deadline? Deals will still happen in August - FOX Sports on MSN
Indeed, trades — big, memorable, seasons-altering trades — can still unfold even though the waiver period has begun. Players acquired by Aug. 31 are eligible for postseason rosters, and that means contenders are still looking to shore up their hopes, even though the calendar has flipped. The only wrinkle is that players must first pass through revocable waivers before being dealt.Just last season, we saw 27 trades or waiver claims within the month of August — moves that involved notables such as Billy Wagner, Scott Kazmir, Jon Rauch, Carl Pavano, Jim Thome, Alex Rios, Ivan Rodriguez, Jon Garland and Jose Contreras. So history suggests the trading game in 2010 is far from over.
How the waiver wire works - SFGate - The Splash
First of all, just about every player in the majors will be put through waivers this month, so if you see a story or item that says, "The Cardinals have placed Albert Pujols on waivers," don't have a coronary. (Thanks Sam Miller)
Ozzie Guillen: Asian players treated better than Latinos - FOX Sports on MSN
Guillen said it's unfair that Japanese players are assigned translators when they come to the U.S. to play pro ball, but Latinos are not.
I think Ozzie missed the fact that most translators are hired as part of the players' contract. Many Latino players don't feel the need to have that negotiated into their contract as there are many players/coaches who speak their language.
What’s In Store for the Texas Rangers Auction - FanGraphs Baseball
A bit of history will be made on Weds. when the Texas Rangers will be put up for auction, with its outcome determined at a hearing on Thurs. To place this in perspective, the last time an MLB club was auctioned out of bankruptcy was the Baltimore Orioles in 1993. Here’s some key information to know leading up to the auction
Very informative article about the upcoming Ranger auction. It's going to get very interesting if someone, such as Mark Cuban, wins the bidding and MLB doesn't approve of the new owner.

August 3 - BR Bullpen
1914 - Yankee catcher Les Nunamaker throws out three Tigers trying to steal second base. It will be the only time a backstop has accomplished the feat in a single inning this century.
1957 - Listening to the radio, Pirates manager Bobby Bragan hears he has been fired and replaced by Danny Murtaugh. That'll teach ya, watch more television!
1967 - Manager Alvin Dark is fired and outfielder Ken Harrelson is released by A's owner Charlie Finley due to reports of rowdy behavior on a team flight. HE GONE!
1982 - At California, Doug DeCinces cracks homers in his first three at bats, but the Angels still lose to the Twins, 5 - 4. Figures.
1983 - Nolan Ryan pitches his 9th career one-hitter, striking out 10 Padres on the way to a 1 - 0 victory.
1987 - The Twins' Joe Niekro is caught with a file on the mound and is ejected during the 4th inning of Minnesota's 11 - 3 win over California. He will be suspended for 10 games by American League president Bobby Brown, who doesn't buy Niekro's story that he had been filing his nails on the bench and stuck the file in his back pocket when the inning started. I remember this because of how funny Niekro is when he pulls his hand from his pocket and kind of tosses the files away (only to be seen by the umpire)
2001 - A jury orders Anheuser-Busch to pay the family of the late Roger Maris $50 million for improperly taking away a beer distributorship. Both sides plan to appeal the ruling, as attorneys for the Maris family said the panel meant to award the family $139 million, but were confused by the judge's instructions to the jury. "We would have awarded you more money, but we're stupid." The Maris family then sued the jury for $139 million.
2002 - Darin Erstad agrees to a four-year contract extension worth $32 million to stay in Anaheim through 2006. The Angels' center fielder joins Troy Glaus, Garret Anderson and Tim Salmon as one of the key players the organization has signed at least through the 2004 season.
Happy b-day:
1976 - Troy Glaus, infielder; All-Star

I hope to see Bourjos in the starting lineup tonight
He just might be that extra spark we need to go on an August tear and send those Rangers back to the cellar.
Some teams are all hat and no cattle.
Go Halos!
RexTookMyStash - August 3, 2010
Scioscia said that a young player needs to play to continue to develop....
So I think we will be seeing a lot of Bourjos this week.
The good thing is we have only 5 tough series for the rest of the season… and Tex has like 5 easy series. We need to use this time to catch up…. We had one of the toughest first halves of baseball, but we have a super easy second half against teams that have weak pitching….. The time to heat up is now.
pendletonmike - August 3, 2010
i wish he had that attitude with Wood
when they first started bringing him up.
HALO_86 - August 3, 2010
Let's go Halos
We need sweeps…merely winning series won’t cut it anymore.
GA'sLawnchair - August 3, 2010
Yeah
If we don’t sweep either Kansas City or Baltimore, it has be considered a big disappointment.
ryanfea - August 3, 2010
We can get it going
We played a few really good games against Texas. Games where we manufactured runs like we can, and played some solid defense. When we play our style of baseball we are really great, we just need to get into that groove again.
Maybe Bourjos is what we need to get going. I don’t care if he is, hell at this point I don’t care what it takes, we just need something to get that fire lit underneath us.
AP2TUDE - August 3, 2010
While we're at Balt the Rangers are at Seattle
Then while we’re at Det they’re at Oak. If we gain any ground this week we’ll be lucky. If the Rangers play .500 ball the rest of the year, which seems reasonable since their acquisition of Lee, then we have to win 2 out of 3 the rest of the way.
Fred Fredrix - August 3, 2010
i dont think we have t oplay .666 ball to catch the rangers. Its like in the upper .500s
Halos2011champs - August 3, 2010
If they go 28-28 they'll be 89-72 on the final day.
We’d have to go 35-19 to match that. Not quite 2 out of 3 but close. I think we’ll be 2 or 3 games out going into that final 4 game series with them.
Fred Fredrix - August 3, 2010
Woah, I saw the booth for Her Universe at Comic-Con.

Those guys are 17 over 0.500. Wow. Let’s hope they flop and we shred. GO HALOS.
Downing Rules - August 3, 2010
Here's what I don't get, maybe someone can explain it to me......
Why are the Angels upset with Rivera’s play in LF? If anything, his bat has been heating up and leading to more runs scored. Abreu’s defense in RF leaves much to be desired, and Matsui’s only ok at DH. If anything, wouldn’t this move be more or less about Abreu and Matsui than Rivera?
And to top it all off, Hunter’s no longer an impressive CF, and Bourjos clearly is.
I just don’t see why we can say this move is about Juan Rivera when it should be about all our OF’s.
Halowood - August 3, 2010
I agree
Abreu should be the DH, Matsui occasionally, while we have a Rivera/Hunter/Bourjos outfield.
Rivera still has a good arm and, even though he lacks range, Hunter can shift to Rivera’s side when Bourjos starts.
Slyintine - August 3, 2010
What Rivera lacks is motivation
hk47 - August 3, 2010
Matsui
doesn’t he become irrelevant for this team if Abreu starts to play DH? just release him and bring up someone else already
HALO_86 - August 3, 2010
The answer to this is simple
Rivera doesn’t give a shit. He’s a lazy loafer. Sure he can hit, but he doesn’t give a damn about playing LF.
hk47 - August 3, 2010
What we lack on this team is a leader
Yes, Torii is our team leader and face of the franchise, but I don’t get the sense that when people like Rivera loaf, that Torii gets up in their face and calls them out.
righteous halo - August 3, 2010
There are a few reasons
Abreu is better with the bat (106 OPS+ vs. 96 OPS+ for Rivera). He’s a better baserunner. And, fair or not, he’s perceived as being a better fielder, even though that’s probably not the case.
I wouldn’t mind seeing both Rivera and Abreu getting time off with Bourjos in the lineup (as well as Matsui).
Gorbachav5 - August 3, 2010
Juan can't cut off a ground ball before it hits the wall.
red floyd - August 3, 2010
We can win just as easily without Matsui.
Maybe we’d do even better without him. In an ideal world, I’d say bench Matsui totally, and alternate Rivera and Abreu at DH. That’s assuming Bourjos isn’t atrocious at the plate for 150 AB straight or something.
Rally Manatee - August 3, 2010
I believe Bourjos' audition is more critical than what is casually thought.
The Angels need to get a very good feel for whether Bourjos can cut it in the major leagues, whether as a regular or as a sub.
No one now believes that Matsui has any chance of being re-signed. Assuming BAbreu becomes the near-regular DH, the Angels need at least one fast, relatively young outfielder who can hit. The results of Bourjos’ audition could very well determine just how hard the Angels will go after Carl Crawford in free agency. If Bourjos impresses the proper powers, those powers may possibly decide it wiser to use that same money to lure some other bat to Anaheim. Of course, if Bourjos is not convincing, we definitely want CCrawford.
Of course, trade rumors introduced us to the name Garrett Jones.
I am suggesting that we also re-visit a subject not mentioned for a while due to the Padres’ unexpected run for the NL West Championship: Adrian Gonzalez. Most “experts” thought he would be traded before the waiver deadline this season, but the Padres’ excellent play has thwarted that idea.
When KMorales comes back next season, I wonder if he may not be quite as mobile as he was before he broke his ankle/leg; he wasn’t fast in the first place. I’ve always thought that in the long run, he would be the ideal DH. Wouldn’t it be great if the Angels had two great power threats (Morales & AGonz) who could swap off, at will, between 1B and DH? Also, it wouldn’t hurt to have an insurance policy (on Morales) against possible BORAS-itis, similar to the one the Angels now have (Haren) relative to Jared Weaver.
wumbug - August 3, 2010
DO NOT WANT GARRETT JONES
hauldog - August 3, 2010
reporting from Portland
Terry Evans just hit a solo shot to put the Bees up 4-0 in the 5th inning over the Beavers.
The between-inning entertainment consisted of children throwing folded newspapers to each other. Ironically, these kids probably had no idea what they were throwing, and by the time they’re old enough to have a paper route, paper routes won’t exist.
yeswecan - August 3, 2010 via mobile
What are you doing in Portland?
hauldog - August 3, 2010
vacation
My girlfriend is shopping, so i took the bus from across town.
yeswecan - August 3, 2010 via mobile
I went to the game on Sunday
That newspaper tossing is ridiculous. But I guess it’s the only way anyone comes in contact with The Oregonian.
Sidenote: how nice is PGE Park for visiting fans. It’s always empty so you can get really friendly with the visiting Bees.
BruinHalo - August 3, 2010

RexTookMyStash - August 3, 2010
Only dislike
I’d rather see Juan at DH.
Rally Manatee - August 3, 2010
Maybe if the Angels were facing a lefty
WiHaloFan - August 3, 2010
Yeah Juan DH lefties
Matsui DH righties. Seems simple enough. Juan can platoon with Bobby too.
linkbruin - August 3, 2010
I like it all
but Bell.
I know he needs a chance I just hope his leash is short. We don’t have the time to “play around” anymore.
angelsfan7 - August 3, 2010
Why Bobby in left and Tori in right?
kbrown2225 - August 3, 2010
They always wanted Abreu to play left...
that’s what I recall when they signed him. I cannot recall all the circumstances that led to him being placed in right.
Downing Rules - August 3, 2010
Maybe he'll be a little faster to the ball in left
due to the Coriolis effect or something.
RexTookMyStash - August 3, 2010
If Torii can demonstrate that he is decent in RF
Then signing Crawford to play LF would fit perfectly.

Aside from Bell and Matsui in it. It's potentially awesome
RexTookMyStash - August 3, 2010
Yeah, I don't know if I'm more excited about Bourjos being in it
or frustrated with Bell as the SP. I hoped to see Juancho over Godzilla at DH though.
sctrojan13 - August 3, 2010
Rivera should be DH
but at least he’s a good bat off the bench if needed.
Rally Manatee - August 3, 2010
Adam Dunn placed on waivers, make a claim Reaggins
Would be nice to pick him up even if we’re still 8 games back.
310Angel - August 3, 2010
I doubt Dunn makes it to us. He has to pass through the entire NL and any AL teams with worse records than us before we can make a claim.
And then we still have to put together a trade package for him.
I really don’t see it happening.
~MMP~ - August 3, 2010
We don't have to put together a trade package...
the nats could just let him go and dump his salary on whoever claims him.
Nashdiesel - August 3, 2010
Dunn isn't just a salary dump though, the only way they would trade him is if they get a pretty good return.
Otherwise, they hang on to him, offer him arbitration which he would decline, and get the draft picks.
~MMP~ - August 3, 2010
Not likely
