On Sunday, Mike Trout was 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly that plated the go ahead and eventual decisive run in the bottom of the 7th inning as the Quakes defeated the Jethawks 4-3. It was his 13th RBI as a Quake.
Going into Sunday's game Mike was batting .222 in his past 10 games, with little power. In 41 games at Rancho he is hitting .287 with 2 HR, 8 SB and 5 CS. His good-not-great OPS of .762 has been helped by 20 walks in just under 200 Plate Appearances.

At least we takes walks.
With him and Conger, maybe future Angel squads will be more patient.

This guy is an absolute beast
mathisrocks5 - August 29, 2010
"good-not-great OPS"
He must be one of the youngest players in the California League, if not the youngest. It’s important to take that into account when looking at his numbers. Mike Napoli was 22 when he played A-ball.
His batting average and OBP are still great. I’m not surprised he doesn’t have the power to go with them yet. He’s still years away from his physical peak. He’s still a teenager.
Robviously - August 29, 2010
GOOD POINT
How young is Mike Trout?
HE is a year younger than Jon-Benet Ramsey (you can look it up).
Rev Halofan - August 29, 2010
19
~MMP~ - August 29, 2010
Mike Trout is five?
Too soon?
bc56274 - August 29, 2010
Wouldn't that be funny if he was?
Can you imagine the current Angel offense when they realized that a five year old could kick their a$$?
Come to think of it, the way they are playing ANY five year old could kick their a$$
RedHatHalo - August 30, 2010
Yep, this shows him as one of the youngest in the Cal League.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/leader.cgi?type=bat&id=15009&sort_by=Age
This says he’s a year younger than he actually is, but he’s still one of the youngest
~MMP~ - August 29, 2010
Year Younger: BBREF and JUNE 30
If your birthday is before June 30, BBREF lists the age you turn as the age you were that season. If your birthday is after June 30, they post your age that you were ON June 30.
This is why GA seemed old and Torii seemed young.
Rev Halofan - August 29, 2010
He's and 18 year old in High A
He’ll be absolutely fine. He’ll start the year in Rancho next year, tear it up and then head to AA. It’s all good in the hood.
angelskid2210 - August 29, 2010 via mobile
He turned 19 on August 7
but yeah, that is why I gave him is own update.
Rev Halofan - August 29, 2010
Same difference.
What’s a couple days.
angelskid2210 - August 29, 2010
Just explaining how they standardize it
Rev Halofan - August 29, 2010
Honestly, who cares about Mike Trout?
I realize there is not much to talk about with our current major league roster, but no reason to start drooling over this guy.
Dallas McPherson, Jeff Mathis, Brandon Wood, Howie Kendrick, and every other can’t-miss Angel prospect has rendered me numb.
bc56274 - August 29, 2010
if you don't have hope
how can you still have any piss left to rain on our parade?
Rev Halofan - August 29, 2010
I'm not ready to cry and look to the future.
I’m still at the angry, bitter, dumbfounded phase of my 2010 rehabilitation.

Jered Weaver says Hello
~MMP~ - August 29, 2010
And Kendry Morales says "Sup"
~MMP~ - August 29, 2010
Weaver doesn't hit.
And Morales doesn’t count.
He was a product of Castro, not the Angels.
bc56274 - August 29, 2010
Not true
Morales needed 4 years of development in the Angels system before he was ready. Injuries made us rush him in 2006, and he quite obviously was not a finished product.
Deveopment wise he was similar to a college draft pick when we got him. If college/young Cubans don’t count, then by your standards only high school picks or teenage foreign signs are developed by the minor league system.
RallyMonkey5 - August 30, 2010
Because history is such a solid predictor of the future
You know what all those guys have in common with Trout? Nothing.
Trout isn’t some product of the Angel hype machine. He is regarded as the best prospect in baseball by virtually EVERYONE. Sure, he may amount to nothing, but it won’t be for the reasons you listed.
bjsguess - August 29, 2010
"Because history is such a solid predictor of the future"
Sarcasm fail for stating a truth.
Trout has everything going against him, just like any minor leaguer does. This is a game of failure. There IS truth to mashers in the PCL league failing at the major league level. Trouts not there yet, but there is a common theme for AAA studs nosediving when they see major league pitching and not grooving fastballs in high altitude.

Epic Dean - August 29, 2010
Not worried ... just a little disappointed
Look – if you are going to be best prospect in baseball you have to do more than just be OK. I get that he is super young for the league. However, his SB ratio is concerning. His power is non-existent. He’s just another player right now in High A.
I’m sure he will turn it around but this promotion has been disappointing to date.
bjsguess - August 29, 2010
You miss the point.
There are only THREE prospects in all of the minors in high A under age 20 with at least 100 plate appearances. He’s the youngest, and has the highest OPS among them. He’s three years younger than the competition, and getting on base at a .366 clip.
He’s come farther faster than any other prospect in baseball.
Turks Teeth - August 29, 2010 via mobile
unless he bats 1.000
there are some people who just won’t be happy and will miss out on appreciating him.
Rev Halofan - August 29, 2010
^ ya that ^
But even then they’ll complain that he doesn’t hit enough HRs or better yet he hits to many and he’s not learning to drive the ball to the gaps. Lol
(!ts_a_C.A._thing) - August 30, 2010 via mobile
not exactly though, he is the youngest in high A ball.
There is at least one guy in AA that’s 18 and a few in AAA that are 19.
Balls and Strikes - August 29, 2010
Do they not see the difference?
Here’s a lengthy summary of why to be hopeful about Mike Trout:
PLATE DISCIPLINE PLATE DISCIPLINE PLATE DISCIPLINE PLATE DISCIPLINE
For a 19 year-old who should technically be in over his head against older pitchers, his plate discipline is outstanding. Obviously it’s no guarantee. Kotchman’s strike zone judgment was also superb when he was young. But after watching many otherwise naturally gifted hitters exposed by big league breaking balls (Kendrick, Aybar, Wood, Bourjos TBD), there’s a very good reason to be more sanguine about Trout. He might actually not chase the junk pitches.
Suboptimal - August 29, 2010
sanguine
great word. I need to use that more often.
clover_black - August 30, 2010
This might be a great place to let everyone know
Our other 1st rounder RANDAL GRICHUK is now tearing up the midwest league. Perhaps he’ll join Trout in the Cal League next year, if Trout does’t start the year in AA.
Halowood - August 30, 2010
Thats DAMN RIGHT!
norcaliangelsfan - August 30, 2010
That's my guess.
I say grichuk gets moved up for the A+ playoffs and they both start there next season with Trout moving up half way through. It’s very good to see Randal tear it up. He is almost at .300 now after a miserable start and an injury, very nice.
angelskid2210 - August 30, 2010 via mobile
There's the kid people should be worried about bombing
Grichuk thinks plate discipline is something you do at a buffet. He’s still a solid prospect because he’s so young, but he’s the type of prospect that the Angels have not been able to develop. Whether that’s a problem with their minor league coaching or the players themselves, it’s not for me to say. But as Suboptimal pointed out above, the prospect busts we’ve experienced the last five years have one main thing in common – lack of plate discipline.
Gorbachav5 - August 30, 2010
Hey Rev...
First time I’ve posted on here (nice approval process) but I just wanted you to know that I appreciate all the info you provide on here…especially on the minor league front.

MIght it be the real Cookie Jr?
Angels have retired your number, by the way

This is the best Angel fan blog by far.
I’ve been a fan of the Angels since their inception (rigidly enforced by my dad). I recall cheering for your Dad! Glad you joined.
One special request…try to get Gubi to reduce the use of cliches. Pretty please? It provides a lot of humor here, but we can fill that deficit with more horse-face photos of Lackey. Good luck!
