Angels scored no runs. Yes we have no bats.
Jered Weaver had to be perfect and he was only supremely human, thus sealing his fate. The Twins had 7 hits, the Angels had 6, but the Twins scored 4 runs and the Angels scored 0. Folks, the playoffs begin in 199 games.
Weaver had 3 strikeouts in 6 IP and looks kinda gassed... he's peaked in his greatest season and now the only question is how many single season counting stat marks can he set on the all-time franchise list and will he get enough rest in between starts to ensure his fitness for next season.
Jordan Walden made his major league debut in the game (wearing Jersey # 51). The reliever hit 98 on the gun and occasionally threw the ball into the strike zone (23 pitches, 14 strikes, 2 strikeouts a walk and a hit - look ma it is Fernando Rodney on the major league minimum). Scot Shields pitched the first scoreless inning of his career or at least since he was good.

one bad inning for Weaver
9 bad innings for the lineup. I’m so over it.
Doctor Wu - August 22, 2010
So
once again, why is Aybar batting 6th in front of Naps?
phoenix15 - August 22, 2010
Is it just me
or does Napoli strike out every at bat?
Doctor Wu - August 22, 2010
No, that's Mathis.
Every once in a while Napoli hits the ball. Although this entire lineup couldn’t hit water if it fell out of a boat right now.
halofolife - August 22, 2010
Tommy Lasorda says it all here:
http://www.johnspeedie.com/healy/bev-boat.wav
He was talking about Kurt Bevaqua, but it’s appropriate for our offense.
sheisalovelyladyandmyapologiestoher - August 22, 2010
That is a pretty spot on assessment.
Bring on 2011!
halofolife - August 22, 2010
He no longer tries to make contact on off-speed pitches.
He used to have more quality ABs, but now he just sits dead red, and if he doesn’t get a fast ball to hit, he strikes out looking on a breaking ball. It’s infuriating. Pitchers are starting to figure that out too.
Rally Manatee - August 23, 2010
Keep this up and the Angels might secure one of the top 10 draft picks
310Angel - August 22, 2010
Joe Saunders number already taken? geeeez
WillGoAngels27 - August 22, 2010
Vladdy's was taken earlier in the season...
Not much stink over that …
Downing Rules - August 23, 2010
You guys gonna get all weepy for Kirk McCaskill too?
Saundo was a good guy and an average pitcher, but nothing sacred.
gitchogritchoffmypetis - August 23, 2010
Nobody touch Geoff Zahn's!
aces666high - August 23, 2010
What makes you think we're making the playoffs next year, Rev?
We’ll only be older and slower next year.
Kendry will help, but I don’t know, it looks like this team needs a complete overhaul.
bc56274 - August 22, 2010
It's the difference between a trip to Tune-Up Masters and a week-long trip to the dealer and a new engine.
I’m hoping for the first choice. With the payroll the way it is, don’t expect too much FA action.
sheisalovelyladyandmyapologiestoher - August 22, 2010
I just don't see how our offense improves too much without a big signing or two.
I’m a little worried about Haren too.
We’ll see what happens. This year has just been frustrating.
bc56274 - August 23, 2010
Easy Gents, Jordan Walden provides MUCH hope for the future......
Not just him alone, all our new bullpen additions aren’t failing miserably. Kohn, Rodriguez and Walden all give us something for the future we’ve desperately needed for a while, a deep and steady bullpen. On top of which, our rotation for 2011 is set.
No matter how you calculate it, the Angels probably have around 10 million to play with before reaching this year’s salary, and we all know how it’s going to be spent, on OFFENSE.
Now 10 million isn’t enough to secure any great offensive players, however, if Reagins does what I think he will do, we should have more money to play with, through less arb eligible players and less contractually obligated money. Some of this may come as a shock, some, may not.
The Angels have soured on Juan Rivera, and given the fact that he’s reasonably priced, I’m willing to bet the Angels will ship him to free up about 4 million dollars, and maybe land a mediocre AA pitcher. DH will be used to rest Abreu and Hunter’s legs.
The Angels also don’t need three catchers. Right now, the price on Mathis and Wilson would be minimal, we’d get nothing in return. I think the Angels will deal Mike Napoli for perhaps a corner infield prospect down on the farm. This should free up about 3 million in arbitration.
With between 15-20 million to spend, and a fully armed bullpen and rotation, Reagins will set his sites on offense. Morales will be returning, so that adds significant power, next up, all the Angels need is speed. Either we’ll stick with Willits/Pettit/Trumbo in LF and have a payroll around 110-115 million, or Reagins will do what every “expert” expects him to do and try to bring in Crawford and have a payroll between 125-130 million.
This steak doesn’t need to be thrown away, we just need to cut the fat and use the right blend of herbs and spices, she can still be Filet Mignon yet!
Halowood - August 23, 2010
Seriously doubt that. Angels had multiple opportunities to get a couple of hitters yet,
we keep adding pitchers. Sure, we will stop the other teams hitters and win games
easy! Chances are, they are going to add more pitchers and one hitter if we are
lucky. The entire line up needs a revamp but, the cheerleaders do not see anything
wrong with the line up. As the saying goes: “Those who do not learn from the past
are doomed to repeat it!”
JimmyBlue - August 23, 2010
Who are the cheerleaders?
As far as I can tell everybody is pissed off about these lineups.
Downing Rules - August 23, 2010
agreed
angelsownredsux - August 23, 2010
BOTG = Weaver
Offense sucked.
Time to sweep the Rays. You know, that Elvis song: “It’s Now or Never.” Tomorrow might be too late, it’s now or never, HIT THE FREAKING BALL.
vladtheimpaler - August 23, 2010
According to John Miller
this is only Torii’s 2nd year with the Angels. Thanks for the contract extension, John! I can’t stand listening to these ESPN charlatans pretending like they know the teams they’re talking about.
And how about Joe Morgan giving up half way through a sentence because he just couldn’t pronounce the word he was fishing for! Not to mention that the jackass still hasn’t learned that it’s Howie KendRICK not Kendrix. And his newest name to buthcer? Alberto Callaspo pronounced with an ‘l’ and not a ‘y.’ How does that guy even have a job in broadcasting?
I’d take Steve Physioc any day over Joe Morgan. I hate how he repeats himself two or even three times on the same point! “Just because Weaver isn’t a sinker ball pitcher doesn’t mean he can’t get a ground ball. A guy can hit still hit a ground ball. He could still get a ground ball.” Is it because he’s afraid of dead air? Is he full of himself and loves the sound of his own voice? Or is he just so stupid that he needs to repeat himself to make sure he said what he wanted to say?
Rally Manatee - August 23, 2010
Every time I hear Morgan refered to as, "Hall of Famer," Joe Morgan,
I think of an old baseball movie entitled; “Elmer, The Great.” The star was named Joe E. Brown, I think.
Elmer was a great baseball player, but a very dim bulb. Joe E. Morgan was a very good baseball player, but a very poor public speaker.
My dream of his next broadcast of an Angel game; after Brandon Wood has sewn up the third-base position with his stellar defensive play and triple-crown offensive numbers:
“The California Angels’ manager, Mick Soosha, is having a great decision to make. Should Kendrix or Calipso play second base?”
hittheg - August 23, 2010
Sounds like a Howard's commercial!
Rally Manatee - August 23, 2010
also according to John Miller...
Hunter and Aybar are on the Twins. On 2 separate occasions, he repeated Angels players’ names over and over to describe a play made by a Twins player…
daze - August 23, 2010
Not only is Torii still playing for the Twins, he's moved to 2nd base apparently.
~MMP~ - August 23, 2010
He did correct himself once when he called the Twins SS "Aybar"
red floyd - August 23, 2010
It's a proximity issue...
When you’ve been staring into the sun like brilliance of the Redsux and Spunkees from the Mercury like closeness of Bristol, CN you…. tend…. tooooooo…. get a little….. spaced out.
another few years and he’ll be referring to himself as Joe Horton.
gitchogritchoffmypetis - August 23, 2010
Lose, Lose , Lose.
Let’s keep it up boys, a nice top draft pick will help ease the pain.
Wally's World - August 23, 2010
It seems like Weaver can never have two dominant starts in a row.
And I’m pretty sure Joe Morgan pronounced Callaspo’s last name like it’s spelled. Epic fail.
And he mentioned that Jered Weaver is better this year because of his funky delivery and how well he hides the ball. I was thinking to myself “Um, his delivery has been exactly the same ever since he came up to the big leagues. Do you even watch west coast baseball? Oh, obviously not. You work for BSPN. That was a stupid question.”
Chzburger Jones - August 23, 2010
wow only 20 comments…. things are looking glum around Halo’s heaven….
Lets get those good picks boys! keep up the lack of hitting and poor bullpen!
robi s - August 23, 2010
Weaver has pitched 174 innings thus far
The team is going no where; he’s not going to win the Cy Young or league MVP this year. Weaver is 3-6 with an ERA of 3.86 over the past 10 games. Let him skip a turn in the rotation and take a break.
mustard_man - August 23, 2010
Yeah W-L is a great indicator of pitching performance for Weaver...
he could very well be 7-2 in that same 3.86 ERA stretch.
Downing Rules - August 23, 2010
I fear Weaver leaving pissed off like Lackey
I really hope our offense can turn it around next year, not only for our sake as fans, but for Weaver’s sake. Lackey bitched about no run support, but he had a better offense behind him almost every year compared to what Weaver is getting this year. Weaver may not be as much of an ass, but he is every bit as competitive as Lackey. He won’t stick around forever if the Angels can’t assure him that they will be truly competitive, and give him a chance for a ring.
Rally Manatee - August 23, 2010
I've thought the same thing
over the past few weeks, but at the same time Lackey decided to leave right after they had the best offinsive season in their history, so I think Lackey was all about the $$$ more than he was about making sure he would get ample run support.
2pintsofbooze - August 23, 2010
I voted for Joe Morgan.
On the simple theory that Joe Morgan totally sucks, even worse than our offense.
red floyd - August 23, 2010
The only thing preventing a disaster next year
is Arte’s wallet.
How much does this guy want to win… obviously Tony Reagins will do his best to spend Arte’s money on the superfluous. Maybe we can all get lucky and see the angels lock up a decent FA that will help put runs on the board.
clover_black - August 23, 2010
cubs did that
look at them now
DAD OF VLAD - August 23, 2010
So do the yankees.
clover_black - August 23, 2010
small sample size.
Downing Rules - August 23, 2010
hopefully they can add another impact player
like Callaspo. That will confuse me for awhile.
autry's cowboys - August 23, 2010
this shit sucks
i get to see them on tv and they suck really bad
DAD OF VLAD - August 23, 2010
What about those of us spending our hard earned dollars to see this crap?
Downing Rules - August 23, 2010
well..........
Jered can only do so much for so long.
norcaliangelsfan - August 23, 2010
especially if
he needs to pitch a shutout just to get to extra innings
phoenix15 - August 23, 2010
I know our offense sucks
but Callaspo’s been very good for us, better than I expected. At least the guy makes contact and manages to find holes unlike our other “contact” hitters. But still, if he’s our #3 hitter for the future, God help us all…
desecrator09 - August 23, 2010
Versitility is cool and all, but learning to play 3 positions usually equals "hits like a girl".
We need a guy who hits with enough authority, and either power or base running skills, to make it a big deal when he shifts positions.
Baring getting a truly scary hitter somehow, I really want to see some Trumbo. If he can provide any sort of reliable power it will lift at least some of our desperate need, even if he only hits 250…. like all our “contact” hitters this year. If he’s even a little dangerous, ie high strike outs but plenty of power, it makes getting through a Morales, Hunter, Napoli, Trumbo chunk of the order a lot more nerve racking than what we have now.
