Kazmir to pitch simulated game - The Orange County Register
Out since the All-Star break with shoulder fatigue, left-hander Scott Kazmir will throw a four-inning simulated game (approximately 60 pitches) at the Angels’ minor-league complex in Tempe, Ariz. on Monday. If all goes well enough, Kazmir would then rejoin the team in Baltimore and rejoin the starting rotation on Saturday in Detroit. Kazmir has not pitched since a club-record 13-run beatdown in Oakland on July 10.
Just in case you were wondering.

Angels make their pitch to stay in AL West race with 4-1 win over Rangers - latimes.com
The Angels played one of their best overall games in weeks on Sunday, despite third baseman Alberto Callaspo's sixth-inning error that led to the Rangers' only run and Juan Rivera's ill-advised seventh-inning attempt to stretch a bloop single to right into a double; Rivera, perhaps trying to silence critics who have questioned his effort in recent weeks, was thrown out at second. Fernando Rodney retired the side in order in the eighth, shortstop Erick Aybar ranging far behind the second-base bag to field Guerrero's grounder and throw to first for the out, and closer Brian Fuentes threw a scoreless ninth for his 20th save.
Weaver strikes out seven, earns the win - Jered Weaver strikes out seven over seven innings of work, and earns the win (how soon until there's some Weaver/CY Young talk?), Murphy throws out Napoli at home - David Murphy throws out Mike Napoli at the plate to end the bottom of the first inning (anyone think Napoli would have been safe if he had slid?), Callaspo makes a tough throw to get the out - Alberto Callaspo makes a strong throw to get Taylor Teagarden out at first in the the top of the third (Napoli makes a nice play at first handling Callaspo's throw), Aybar goes to his left to get the out - Erick Aybar shows off his range, going to his left to get the out at first in the bottom of the eighth.
Boston Red Sox - Going rate too steep for GM - The Boston Globe
And while Epstein said the Sox were "pretty aggressive’’ in their offers, the deals were not to their liking. They made strong offers on Toronto’s Scott Downs, Anaheim’s Brian Fuentes, Seattle’s Brandon League, and were also in on Toronto’s Kevin Gregg, according to a baseball source.
Say what? The Red Sox made an offer for Fuentes and were turned down??
Cuban's role in Rangers auction not clear - Dallas Morning News
When the Rangers finally move to auction next week, as ordered Friday by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge D. Michael Lynn, it appears Mavericks owner Mark Cuban will leave with something one way or another. It's just not certain whether it will be controlling interest in the club or a hefty profit. Two sources said Friday that Cuban has been buying and trading for debt notes on the Rangers and Hicks Sports Group, which would make him both a bidder and a creditor. Lynn ruled the auction for the Rangers will go forward Wednesday as scheduled, and it could include a new bidder – Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
What's interesting here is the emergence of News Corp as a potential bidder. News Corp is the previous owner of the Dodgers.
Garret Anderson’s Gotta Go - FanGraphs Baseball
Brandon Wood has "bested" Anderson. He’s got the 13th-worst OPS+ among players with 160+ PA since Theodore Roosevelt took over as U.S. president following William McKinley’s assassination. Anderson places in a tie for 141st. So, he’s got that going for him.
Yeah, well...

August 2 - BR Bullpen
1921 - With the jurors lifting the men onto their shoulders, the eight White Sox players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series are acquitted by the jury. The next day, Commissioner Kenesaw Landis will say the overwhelming evidence clearly shows the Black Sox fixed the games with gamblers and all involved will be banned from playing professional baseball again.
1979 - Yankees C Thurman Munson, 32, perishes at Canton, Ohio, in a crash of the plane he was piloting. A crowd of 51,151 will attend the memorial tribute at Yankee Stadium tomorrow.
1985 - The last-place Pirates unload three of their veteran players, trading pitchers John Candelaria and Al Holland and OF George Hendrick to the Angels for OF Mike Brown and pitchers Pat Clements and Bob Kipper.
1995 - Long-time coach Jimmie Reese, whose 23 years in an Angels uniform equals the longest in club history is inducted into the Angels' Hall of Fame. The former roommate of Babe Ruth began his career as a batboy for the Pacific Coast League's Los Angeles Angels in 1917.
R.I.P.:
1979 - Thurman Munson, catcher; All-Star (b. 1947)

The Red Sox offer for Fuentes
Was a large box of pink hats, a throwback Jim Rice jersey, and the rights to a reality show based on the life of Bill Simmons. I can see why Reagins turned it down.
Gorbachav5 - August 2, 2010
The story is clearly unresearched or verified
The author refers to us as “Anaheim”—need I say more?
George Kaplan - August 2, 2010
Oh hell, ESPN still calls us Anaheim ...
nevermind
eyespy - August 2, 2010
Bill Simmons.
Yeah, that was probbaly what they meant by “pretty aggressive” on their part. They were probably hoping to get away with Danny Ainge but were forced to dig deep.
Stirrups - August 2, 2010
There are also rumors
At the 11th hour the Sawx reluctantly agreed to throw in a vial of Pedroia’s sweat, but Reagins wanted two vials. I’m not sure if I believe that one or not.
Gorbachav5 - August 2, 2010
F-ing Boston.com
The Angels are “Los Angeles”, not “Anaheim”.
red floyd - August 2, 2010
I enjoyed that they called them what they should be called
Gorbachav5 - August 2, 2010
California?
Rev Halofan - August 2, 2010
If you want to get really old school
then we’re back to “Los Angeles.”
rspencer - August 2, 2010
Anaheim is in the name just like Los Angeles
So technically both are correct
Gorbachav5 - August 2, 2010
Alright I had wondered where Wood placed
13th worst season in the history of baseball, what an accomplishment!
ryanfea - August 2, 2010
7 OPS+

13th?????
can this guy do anything right? Go big or go home, place in the top 5 , b-wood!!!!
clover_black - August 2, 2010
I would pick the Rangers if I had a half billion to waste
Then I’d instruct my GM to trade Andrus (will play 2B), Guerrero, Lee, Lewis, Feliz, Oliver, and Hamilton to the Angels for Kendrick, Matsui, Kazmir, Palmer, Rodney, Shields, and Rivera.
I’d do this with the Rangers since they have more talent to trade the Angels than the Mariners and A’s do. Then I’d finish last every year, serve as the place where Arte’s bad contracts wind up, get the first pick of every draft, trade that youngster to the Angels the following summer, and rake in the profits from Bud’s revenue sharing plan.

i would take Seattle
just for the stadium
DAD OF VLAD - August 2, 2010
Seattle-So I could win at a place that has never won
What happened to Griffey? did the owners forget how great he was? Easily the best Mariner in there history and they do nothing for him?—They are the ones that need new ownership—Let then die in the basement until they honor there own—-I would take Seattle because it is prime for a new direction in the front office and management tottally

clover_black - August 2, 2010
I'd pick Seattle.
The pacific northwest is pretty nice, compared to a dumpster that is texas.
clover_black - August 2, 2010
You can't lose in Seattle
You’ll never be worse than the giant midwestern douchebag that stole the Sonics and Kevin Durant from them. No matter how badly you manage things, even to Donald Sterling epically bad, you’ll still never be the worst Seattle franchise owner.
HaloFanInDC - August 2, 2010
I'd pick Seattle too
So I could import the entire Dragons or Giants team from Japan and really tap into the overseas market.
Texas is awesome BTW, it’s just DFW that sucks donkey balls.
HoustonHaloFan - August 2, 2010 via mobile
I don't know bro,
Amarillo sucks, ditto for almost all of the rest of northern Texas. El Paso is a dump as well. I’m not saying the entire state is a cesspool, just most of it.
halofolife - August 2, 2010
ok, but nobody lives there
Houston/Austin/San Antonio are all fantastic. Low unemployment, inexpensive housing, low cost of living and great places to do business in incredibly diverse environments.
Likewise, I wouldn’t suggest people think of California as being synonymous with Bakersfield, Ontario or Blythe. ;-)
In any case, screw the Rangers.
HoustonHaloFan - August 2, 2010 via mobile
I was not that big a fan of Houston when I visited
I have heard good things about Austin and San Antonio though.
I would still pick Seattle. Great stadium and decent fanbase. They’re the only baseball in the Pacific Northwest.
Gorbachav5 - August 2, 2010
Ditto.
I’ve heard that the weather in Houston is awful… Hot and muggy.
Lots of good things about Austin and SA, though.
red floyd - August 2, 2010
well yeah
If a places worth comes down to humidity, you won’t like Houston. It sits on the gulf coast, hundreds of miles south of San Diego in latitude, and it’s a balmy 102 today with 70% humidity. I
That said, I grew up in OC and after graduating from Servite I moved to Texas to get my undergrad. I visit SoCal regularly (I caught a HH meet earlier this year), but I doubt I’d ever live there again. Different strokes maybe, and yeah the view from the patio of Las Brisas is hard to beat, but so is a 3000 sq ft house in a good neighborhood for less than 250k.
It’s all relative I suppose, and again screw the Rangers.
HoustonHaloFan - August 2, 2010 via mobile
I didn't spend much time there
So I’m only sharing what little I experienced while in Houston. I didn’t really care for the downtown area, and the weather was absolutely brutal. You could scoop the air with a spoon, it was so humid.
Gorbachav5 - August 2, 2010
No worries bro
You just need a better tour guide next time.
It IS bleeping hot and humid half the year, and while I was told 24 years ago that I’d get used to it – I don’t think I have. Still, I’ve grown to love Houston. Great restaurant scene, tons of fun bars, and the aforementioned economic benefits. Throw in a decent beach or two and it’s
A good place to call home.
That I have family and friends and the Angels as reasons to come back to my original home is a bonus.
HoustonHaloFan - August 2, 2010 via mobile
You rep it well...
Sounds like it is pretty cool. Must be nice to have low unemployment! ;)

Fox and the Rangers
NewsCorp/Fox bought the Dodgers to checkmate Disney’s ambition to build a regional ESPN channel with the Angels, Ducks and Dodgers, as soon as the Prime Ticket deal expired.
When I read that NewsCorp was sniffing around the Rangers, I figured it had to do with TV deals. Sure enough…
After what they did for the Dodger franchise, getting it just screwed up enough for McCourt to move in and finish it off, we can all hope they are the winning bidder for the Rangers. Give them a season or two to trade Josh Hamilton to the Marlins because he wanted a fatter deal, then let them sell the franchise to an overleveraged “millionaire” poseur who will turn the AL West into a 3-team division for the decade to come.
George Kaplan - August 2, 2010
It's hard to imagine a worse outcome for the Rangers
Or a better one for everyone else in the AL West. Except maybe Tom Hicks winning a bid on himself.
Suboptimal - August 2, 2010
I'd buy Oakland.
