The headline is about all you need to know about this game. I'm not sure if the Angels were actually at the ballpark tonight or if the Red Sox just ran the bases until they got tired. With the loss or forfeit or whatever it was, the Angels fall back to 60-60 and are now 0-8 against the Bad Sox this season. 42 games of existential baseball left in the existential 2010 season: the Angels are neither here nor there, they merely are, except when they aren't. And tonight they were nowhere to be seen.

i love peter gammons even if he is a Boston Fan
DAD OF VLAD - August 17, 2010
I hope this is sarcasm DOV....
Peter Gammons can suck my Bawstonian brewed Sam Adams beer with a side of baked beans with Larry Bird and Spencer For Hire watching as I piss on their redsuck jersey. Screw the chowds! BTW, i’m pretty lit.
halofolife - August 17, 2010
I really like Gammons
Yeah, he focuses on Boston stuff, but that’s what he knows. I like his writing.
Gorbachav5 - August 18, 2010

what was funny
was that they came to our game thread after our game ended and started talking trash about how quiet it was in the thread. should we have lingered around to talk about how bad that game was? no thanks.
they also tried to talk shit about the fact that they scored 1 run when we didn’t score any…even though they lost by 9 and we lost by 6. what sad little men they must be.
2pintsofbooze - August 18, 2010
You know the game was bad when the highlight was a chowd car getting its winshield broken by a
Red Sox* player hitting a homerun over the monster.
44FAN - August 17, 2010
Gotta wonder
why the hell Aybar was batting 6th.
phoenix15 - August 17, 2010
Yes, indeed.
Commander_Nate - August 17, 2010
After beating Boston in the playoffs last season, everyone said we had exorcised the demons...
Well, it appears they’re back. 0-8? Seriously?
bc56274 - August 17, 2010
i'll take the playoff wins every time
we used to win a great majority of regular season games against them as well but they’d kill us in the playoffs….this year just isn’t in the cards. let’s just beat lackey.

Mickey Hatcher
should remain the focus of the blame.
He has received some positive attention lately for last year’s hitting, but you have to chalk that up to having some Vlad, Kendry and a slightly younger Abreau. This year is remarkably different in that most of the line-up is around .250 . Why hasn’t Hatcher been able to help these guys improve? Time for a batting coach promotion from AAA.
bighig - August 17, 2010
By that same logic, you can chalk this year's offense sucking on Matsui being a dissappointment, not having Kendry and Abreu seemingly aging 10 years in a few months.
~MMP~ - August 17, 2010
Irrelevant batting coach job is irrelevant.
Stop living in a world where you think a 90 year old goblin can turn shitty baseball players into non-shitty baseball players.
There are no smoke and mirrors to the angels failing. It’s the product on the field that is trash, not the cooky old codger attached to sosh’s hip in the dugout willing them to suck at baseball.
Besides, Hatcher isn’t going anywhere as long as Sosh is the skipper, so get over the red herring in the dugout.
clover_black - August 17, 2010
Amen, hallelujah, and all that
Suboptimal - August 17, 2010
Word. Hatcher is Scioscia's boy.
He isn’t going anywhere. If the Soth has taught us anything, it is this, he is loyal to a fault. Just ask Steve Finley. Or Mathis. Or Robb Quinlan. Etc, etc.
halofolife - August 17, 2010
So, like, what you are saying is that "hitting coach" on any team
is pretty much their own version of Peewee Reese, yes?
Otherwise why does everybody have one?
Stirrups - August 18, 2010
Hitting coaches are like butter knives
Everyone has one, just because they come with the set, but they don’t really improve the food.
rspencer - August 18, 2010
You can buy a fork all by itself. You can buy a spoon all by itself. Paying for a butter knife is not mandatory.
But once you have decided to pay for one, you should make sure that it does a better job of spreading the butter than the fork or the spoon. Otherwise your food may, indeed, taste like shit.
Stirrups - August 18, 2010
Stay outta my simile!

FINALLY! Someone said it!

Hatcher outside the batting cage late at night, thinking of his precious .300 lineup
Commander_Nate - August 18, 2010
I wonder if he sat there
holding the picture stroking it over and over again.
2pintsofbooze - August 18, 2010
I, respectfully, disagree.
Batting coaching is NOT irrelevent. Batting coaches who fail to have an impact on their roster ARE irrelevent. Only if ALL batting coaches fail to have such impact can it be said that batting coaches are irrelevent. And I do not believe we have proof of the current state of affairs, either way (pro or con), throughout baseball. Charlie Lau, certainly, was not irrelevent.
Is it accepted that the opposing pitching staff, catching roster, pitching coaches, and opposing front office research staff all spend numerous hours and effort to break down a hitter and discern weaknesses and assemble an approach for each batter in various situations? If so, then there is a place for the hitters to have the same resources on their side looking at opposing pitchers, at what opposing pitchers are doing against them, and what they may need to do to adjust their approach to hitting in order to deal with what is going on.
Batting coaches are not going to spin an adult piece of shit into an adult piece of gold. Their job, at a minimum, should be to restore the luster on the gold when the gold is dropped into a bucket of shit. But we have to hope that they, themselves, don’t turn pieces of gold into pieces of shit as they attempt to execute on their authority and responsibility.
Stirrups - August 18, 2010
You can blame Hatcher all you want....
I still blame the Snuggies. No good piece of crap, fake ass blankets!
halofolife - August 17, 2010
they don't cover your ass
eyespy - August 18, 2010
They feel like a hospital gown.
Teixeira Who? - August 18, 2010
I seriously have a hard time watching this team play.
They are about as exciting to watch as an all day insurance seminar. Was anyone really surprised that this team failed to score with the bases loaded? I think Scioscia needs to stop trying to get clever with the batting lineup every game. Even when they have a good offensive showing, he’ll change it again for the next game.
Doctor Wu - August 17, 2010
It's not that I'm surprised when they fail to score with the bases loaded
It’s gotten to where I EXPECT it. And that is sad.
RedHatHalo - August 18, 2010
For the 1st time this year
I watched the Angels with utter indifference tonight.
Rally Manatee - August 18, 2010
I'm trying to...
But the truth is, they aren’t far enough out to be totally indifferent yet!!! There’ still the slimmest of hopes that baseball will choose us for one of it’s many timeless Cinderella stories. You know the ones, the ones that endear and hook a fan into baseball like no other sport can do. The stories…the stories you will tell your grandchildren about the time…..it’s the nature of the game, one of it’s greatest beauties….but it’s fucking with us(there’s August!), all of us, no matter what we say. And you know why???Hope. Because deep inside we’ve all done the math and we all know that it’s still possible, tho not likely….and I have a bad feeling we will be dragged thru this entire season in this very state. Nothing exciting, like a real comeback and pennant race. Not…not that. Just enough success, and enough Texas failure, to keep us hoping…..Someone please shoo the horse and put it and us out of everyone’s misery.
firebird81 - August 18, 2010
"Buttercup" Season
Get it now?
Red Sniper - August 18, 2010
just enough success to kill our shot at a protected pick. yay
2pintsofbooze - August 18, 2010
That wasn't a game
It was batting practice for Boston.
HaloHead - August 18, 2010
When runners are in scoring position, the Angel hitters are about as useless as a wicker bedpan
