Abreu hits walk-off HR in 10th to secure Angels' sweep of Royals - CBSSports.com
Bobby Abreu moved into the top spot in the order after the Los Angeles Angels got swept last week at Baltimore. They're been mostly winning ever since. Abreu homered in the bottom of the 10th inning Wednesday to give the Angels a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals and their first three-game sweep since mid-June. "It's not over for us," right fielder Torii Hunter said. "The fat lady, she hasn't sang yet." Abreu sent a 1-1 pitch from Jesse Chavez (4-3) into the right-field seats with one out. The Angels rushed from the dugout to greet Abreu but stood back, giving him plenty of room to safely cross the plate.

Yesterday was a good day; the Angels sweep the Royals with the final win coming on a dramatic, extra-inning walk-off home run, and then the Rangers taking a heartbreaking loss to the Yankees.  I've already said the Angels season was over, but I might be wrong.  I hope I'm wrong.  The Angels need more days like yesterday, and it's quite possible the calendar is full of them.  Here are the highlights:  Pena throws to second base to nab Matsui - Brayan Pena catches Hideki Matsui trying to steal second base in the fourth inning.  It's funny causes he's slow (I just watched "The Hangover" again and was reminded of the line from the movie, "It's funny cause he's fat").  Anyway, Ka'aihue makes a nice play to end the frame - Kila Ka'aihue makes a nice play to retire Alberto Callaspo, ending the eighth inning.  Yeah, he made a nice play on a FOUL BALL.  The first base umpire is a rah-tard.  Weaver retires Gordon to end the threat - Jered Weaver retires Alex Gordon to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning.  Weaver should have slapped Gordon in the face with his glove and shouted "Sit down, bitch!"  Okay, maybe not, but that would have been so boss.  Weaver fans 11 over eight frames - Jered Weaver gives up only one run and strikes out 11 over eight dominant innings.  Watch these strike outs and notice how well Weaver mixed his pitches and how kick-ass his off-speed stuff was.  Abreu crushes a walk-off homer to right field - Bobby Abreu wins it for the Angels with a solo homer in the 10th inning.  Ah Bobby.  Bobby-bobby-bobby-bobby.

Angels 'fairly close' to an agreement with draft pick Kaleb Cowart - latimes.com
The Angels have offered Cowart at least $1.5 million, a bonus commensurate with his draft slot, but Bane said, "We know it's going to cost us more than his slot figure."

Police: New York Mets' Francisco Rodriguez charged with assault on father-in-law - ESPN New York
Police say New York Mets reliever Francisco Rodriguez was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, after an altercation with his father-in-law at Citi Field. Rodriguez became highly agitated with reporters who approached him at his locker after the altercation. Rodriguez screamed, "Mind your own [expletive] business!" to a reporter who tried to ask him a question.

Anyone miss this goofball?

65-48 - Lone Star Ball
I'd wager if the Rangers have a 6-2 lead in the 7th inning with Cliff Lee on the mound, regardless of the opponent, they win the game 95% of the time. This was one of those 5%. And it sucked. That was the toughest loss in some time. I'm spent.

Followed by 1180+ comments consisting of wailing and gnashing of teeth.  Could this be the turning point of the Rangers' season?  You know, the type of kick to the balls that takes the wind completely out of your sails and gets you thinking maybe you're not as good as you thought.  Here's how it happened:  Jeter's single ties the game in the ninth - Derek Jeter rips a single to center, that deflects off Cristian Guzman's glove, to plate Curtis Granderson to tie the game at 6.  "...rips a single to center"?  Jeter hit a weak chopper up the middle that managed to avoid 17 Ranger defenders to drive in the run.  Okay, maybe not 17, but surely not a hit I'd classify as a "rip".  Thames' single gives the Yankees the lead - Marcus Thames rips a single through the left side to score Brett Gardner, giving the Yankees a 7-6 lead in the ninth, and finally Rivera gets Guerrero for the final out - Mariano Rivera gets Vlad Guerrero to hit a grounder to A-Rod for the final out as the Yankees come back to win 7-6.  And the Rangers are left holding their balls wondering what happened.

Small payroll teams turning the tables on baseball's big boys - USATODAY.com
"Maybe some of our collective concerns appear to be unfounded, at least for now," says Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, who has called for a salary cap. Certainly, the playoff landscape has baseball thumping its chest, believing it helps dispel the theory that teams can buy championships. "We have more competitive balance than we've ever had," Commissioner Bud Selig said. "This is a manifestation of all the economic changes we've made. It's working very well." A year ago, the Minnesota Twins, with an opening-day payroll of $65 million, were the only team to rank in the bottom third of payrolls and reach the postseason.

Justice: Berkman is in an Empire State of confusion - Houston Chronicle
Two days before the July 31 trading deadline, Wade told him there were eight teams interested in trading for him, and he needed to know which ones he'd consider going to. Wade went down the list. Berkman said yes to the Yankees, Padres, Rays and Rangers, and no to the Giants, Angels, White Sox and Tigers. Berkman hung up the phone and looked at his dad, Larry. "I think I'm getting traded," he said.

Screw you Lance.

1963 - Stan Musial announces his retirement, effective at the end of the season, at the St. Louis Cardinals' annual team picnic.  You was pissed off that he finished third in the three-legged race, missed out on the potato salad, and someone burned his wiener.

He also ties the ML record with 32 Ks in his last two games.

I think this next series will be very telling.

If we get swept we’re pretty much done, if we win it or sweep I’ll believe a corner has been turned.

Rangers have 3 coming up against the pale chowdas of Maryland at Texas. Not exactly giveaway games.

I’m remaining optimistic.

The Rangers just had their top 2 pitchers

against the bottom 2 of the Yankees and split. Also, Tex didn’t play. Also, Cano didn’t start the first game. Now they r going to get their asses handed to them in Boston. It will be 5.5 in 4 days

I'll drink to that.
You'll drink to pretty much anything...

Oh wait… That was Zoe Necrosis

Also, they play 20 straight games

20! It is a mix of toughness, but the “easier” opponents are @Baltimore, the team that swept the Rangers 4 games in Arlington and are playing really well with Buck, Oakland that will be sitting around .500 as they have been all season and will jump at the chance to beat the R’s, and @KC, which is the last 3 games so the R’s will be gassed.

Let’s say they go 3-3 against Boston and TB, followed by 4-4 against Minnesota and Baltimore, and 4-2 against Oakland and KC. That is 11-9 over that span.

We play 18 in that time. We go 4-2 against Tor and Boston, followed by 3-3 against Minnesota and Tampa, and 5-1 against Baltimore and Seattle (or 4-2 in both cases, I feel like 8-4 over those 12 is possible). That is 12-6 over that span.

Rangers 76-57
Angels 71-63

There’s 5.5 games going into the second day of September.

Rangers then go 2-5 against Minnesota and Toronto (all 7 on the road), 1-2 against NY, and 4-1 against Detroit and Seattle. Rangers 7-8

During that span, Angels go 1-2 at Oakland, and then 7-2 against Cleveland and Seattle (3 against each at home and then 3 @ Cleveland) and finish that stretch 1-2 at TB. Angels 9-6.

Rangers 83-65
Angels 80-69

Angels 3.5 back

Then there is 3 in Anaheim, I’ll skip those for now.

Rangers then go 2-2 at Oakland, 2-1 against Seattle. Rangers 4-3.

Angels have 6 home games against Chicago and then Oakland. Kaz will either be pitching well or be in the BP with WTY, Haren, Voodoo, and Pinata in a 4 man rotation. It won’t be easy, but say they are able to win the series against the White Sox 2-1 and then sweep Oakland who will still be around .500 and out of it. (Note: besides the fact the the Angels get the A’s at home and the Rangers get them on the road, another reason for the discrepancy is that Oakland and Texas play 2 day games and the A’s are ridiculously good during the day). That is 5-1 Angels over those last 6 not involving Texas.

The records at this point (besides the 3 game series between the teams) are
Rangers 87-68
Angels 85-70

Angels 2 games back.

That means the Angels have to win 5 of the 7. It is definitely tough, but imagine if the Angels win the first 2 at home. In that last game, they will have the chance to move within a half-game (and in the long run, a game ahead before the final series). After being ahead by 10 games, that game would be huge to tie the Rangers in wins. The Rangers pitcher would probably shit a brick. Who can be clutch there….Bonzai? Tubby? Lewis? The only guy that has the stones is Lee, and Weaver has shown that in Anaheim he can out-pitch the Rangers ace. Even if the Angels go 2-1 in that series and have to go 3-1 in Arlington, the pressure is all on the Rangers.

Final standings:
Angels 90-72
Rangers 89-73

Yes it takes the Angels going 31-15 (.674) and the Rangers going 24-25 (.490) so it seems like a stretch. Some Angels hitters have to get back their form a bit, but they don’t have to have career months, just get back a little closer to what they are capable of. Once someone else jumps on what Abreu has been doing, it will spread. The Angels have more talent than a 59-57 team, so is it that much to expect that they start playing a little closer to what they are capable of? It also takes the Rangers coming back down to earth a bit. They are 15-10 after the all star break, and that includes 5-2 against a lost Tigers team and a battered Red Sox team. They are only 3-4 in Lee’s starts (0-3 when not playing the West). The 3 wins came in what was essentially Lee’s home debut (discounting the O’s because excitement hadn’t had time to build) against the Angels and then 2 games against A’s starters not named Cahill.

My series predictions are based off the Angels we have seen over the past few days, and the Rangers we have seen post all star break. If both of those criteria aren’t true, the Angels are done for. But if it is, tell me some series where I was way off base. I didn’t predict too many sweeps or anything crazy.

I’m ready for October, and revenge on the MFY.

Wow that took a lotta work...

but hey i’m in!

it's in Arlington, not Boston

Becket vs Hunter
Lester vs Lewis
Matsuzaka vs Wilson

It’ll be tough, no doubt.

Should be a great series.
If the Red Sox sweep, that is.
Thank god

I won’t have to root for Lackey, it was painful enough to have to wish the Yankees well.

What about Josh "Let's throw at Abreu during time-out" Beckett?
Can we play the Royals more often?

Any chance of getting them into the AL West? :)

Might give Bruce Chen more chances to throw a perfect game against us, though.
I was thinking the same thing
I had blacked that out
I was at that game sitting next to a couple Royals fans

they were both pretty cool, mellow guys, but it still irked me whenever they cheered considering we were having a perfect game thrown against us by BRUCE CHEN…of the KC ROYALS.

royals buried us last series.

this is all about bobby at 1 and bourjos in CF. this team has swagger (yes, you can quantify that). Only thing I see is that it might be a little bit too late in the season.

It is getting a bit late in the season,

But the opportunity we need to take advantage of is the schedule. After today, the Rangers have no days off the rest of August and 3 days off in September. We have 2 more off days in August and 4 in September – We have played 3 more games than they have. Not counting the final 4 games of the season, Sept 30-Oct 3, we have 15 home, 10 away in September. They have 8 home and 18 away. The plus for them is that the final 4 games of the season are in their yard, against us.

I'm glad we didn't get Lance Berkman.

Would have been a waste of prospects! That guy is pretty much done. We could just put Juan Rivera at first if we wanted Berkman production there.

Berkman's OBP kicks Juan's ass..........

bad

So....

K-Rod beat up his father-in-law yesterday at Citi Field and is now in jail on assault charges??

k-rod is drama

always has been. thanks for the 2002 postseason, thanks for the saves, but once it became clear you wanted to be a star in a big city, it was bye-bye. f-rod and lackey both seemed unhappy as angels near the end. too bad.

after they are done with Bahstin they got the Rays :)
I want to propose a new nickname for K-Rod:

“Haymaker-Rod.”

Rumor has it Krod was trying to save his father in law and.........

he blew it :)

At least he didn't blow the save.
I see what you did there
Hope's stream is still flowing

Go Angels!!!

My gypsy neighbor told me the LAA will win the division

on a full moon in September … aaaawwwwwooooooooffff

dare to dream..........
