Angels Nearing Season Deadline

I wrote this piece about the Angels coming up the trade deadline before we scored -117 runs getting swept this week in Chi-Low, but whatever, they use my real name at SBN but it is still me: Short and Sweet, what the Angels need to do to compete or retreat.

God I hope it's a mullet

But it looks like it’s just a shadow. There are not enough mullets in professional sports

Liked the analysis, Rev

Can’t buy recommendation. It’s time to sell.

This team is not one or two players away from winning the World Series. To make a trade that requires sending any of our top 30 prospects just to win the division is pointless. The roster needs a significant make-over, get on with it…now.

Also – the front office needs to finish what was started and sign the remaining draft picks. The infusion of young talent is needed at all levels of the organization, that’s why it’s important to get the draft choices into rookie ball now. As for Kaleb Cowart – Bane knew it was going to require a very large investment to sign him before he was drafted, so write the damn check and give the kid the money. We lost good players recently (Harvey, Matusz) because of $$. The team can’t repeat the same mistakes.

I'd re-write the headline to "Angel Season Nearing Deadline".
rangers looking to land LEE
The 5th starter issue.

Kaz is a big problem, but we haven’t even begun to explore our in-house options. I think he needs to be ‘penned immediately, and we need to start auditioning spot starters. Knowing the way Sosh works, SOS and Palmer (if he returns soon) will be given a shot before Kohn. But I think we need to give our guys a shot before we outsource. The reason being, I would hate to give up any of our few precious prospects for a rental pitcher without being sure we didn’t already have a sufficient replacement within our system.

Admittedly, the trouble is, we may have already run out of time. Even if Sosh immediately benches Kaz, his spot in the rotation only comes around 3 more times before the trade deadline. That’s not a lot of time to audition any more than 1 starting pitcher, unless Sosh somehow toys with the rotation, utilizing the all-star break. We could start SOS this Saturday, then on 15th, right after the break, give him another shot if he pitched well, if not give another guy a shot. But still, not a lot of time to act.

Another thing about sending Kaz to the bullpen immediately is that it may, just MAY, also help the bullpen. Think about it. Kaz wouldn’t have to rely on his unreliable slider. He could become a 2 pitch pitcher, and he could throw as hard as he can rather than saving his strength. I really think he could help our ‘pen out. Then, if we still wanted to seek another reliable reliever in a trade, we wouldn’t have to give up as much as we would for going after a starter. If Kaz turned out out to be halfway decent in the ‘pen, we’d end up with 2 improved relief arms. And we would have done it all without mortgaging our future.

I think that’s the most sensible way to both attempt to get back to the playoffs this season and be mindful of the seasons to come. Although I know it won’t make us look like a shoo-in for the WS, I’m willing to bank on the “crap shoot” theory. If we can at least grit it out to win our own division, who knows? We may get hot at the right time and go deep into the post season even with a less-than-perfect team. Isn’t that what happened in ’02 anyway?

Starting to look like a deal may be done sending Lee to the Rangers.

I don’t have a link as someone just said it and had it from twitter. No article yet though.

Report is they traded Smoak and three others.
Who do we want to win out of the Cliff Lee Mariners/Rangers deal?

I just don’t know! I do like the Rangers ‘potentially’ giving away their better prospects, that they so carefully developed over the last few years… quite funny…

looks like it is a done deal...
If Nolan Ryan can win the auction for the team and re sign Lee at the end of the season

then he will have pulled off a miracle in sports and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Just have to see how deep those pockets actually are.
