Angels held nearly hitless (again) in latest loss - The Orange County Register
The two-hit shutout by Sox left-hander John Danks completed a four-game sweep of the Angels who scored five runs on 22 hits in the series with only two extra-base hits (a pair of doubles in Monday's loss). The Angels have now lost six of their past seven and are in danger of fading out of touch with the first-place Texas Rangers by the All-Star break. After the latest ineffectual effort, Angels manager Mike Scioscia kept the clubhouse doors closed to address the team (at least the third time this season he has had one of these post-game monologues). But Scioscia said he kept the message positive.
The Angels were fortunate that the Orioles were able to score 5 unanswered runs yesterday to beat the Rangers. Had the Rangers won, the Angels would have been 6.5 games out of first place. The last time the Angels were more than 6.5 games out? September 23, 2006. In other words, it's been almost 4 years since the Angels have been this far behind another team. Highlights? It's pretty sad when the "highlight" is a 37-hopper that finds a hole for the first hit of a game: Willits breaks up Danks' no-no bid - Reggie Willits singles to left, breaking up John Danks' no-hit bid, and the other highlight is how your pitcher has to throw a shutout to win...Santana hurls eight innings of one-run ball - Ervin Santana limits the White Sox to one run over eight innings on three hits.

Angels-Athletics Preview - 7/9/10 - FOX Sports on MSN
There has been nothing wrong Pineiro's performance lately. The right-hander has a 2.08 ERA while winning his last six starts, the first time he's done that since June and July of 2003 with Seattle. Pineiro (9-6, 3.96 ERA) worked seven innings in an 11-0 win over Kansas City on Sunday. On May 16, he was even better against the A's, pitching a four-hitter for his sixth career shutout in a 4-0 win. Vin Mazzaro (4-2, 3.81) will try to help prevent the A's from losing a fourth straight home game for the first time in 2010. The right-hander also will be trying to win a third consecutive start for the first time in his career. Mazzaro struck out a season-high seven while pitching into the eighth inning of a 3-1 victory at Cleveland on Sunday.
Torii Hunter thinks some Los Angeles Angels are coasting into All-Star break - ESPN Los Angeles
On July 1, the Angels beat Texas and had taken two of three against the AL West's first-place team, pulling them to within 3.5 games of the lead. After Thursday, the Angels were drifting into that netherworld between contention and irrelevance. They entered the day 5.5 games behind Texas, which matched their largest deficit of the season.
Hey Torii, it's not just the players who seem to be coasting. When is the front office going to wake up?
Angels running into problems - The Orange County Register
At the same time, the Angels seem to kill as many rallies as they create with their baserunning. Through Wednesday's games, the Angels rank ninth in the majors with 58 stolen bases, a dropoff for a team that finished second in the majors last season (148) and has had at least 100 steals in each of the past nine seasons. More costly, the Angels have been caught stealing 32 times, tied for second in the majors. Only the White Sox (40) have been thrown out more. The Angels stolen-base percentage (65) ranks 28th in the majors. Only San Francisco and Kansas City are worse.
Caught stealing isn't such a bad thing relative to the situation. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to downplay the importance of not running into outs, but I'm curious as to where the Angels rank in being picked-off this season and the number of times they've been thrown out attempting to steal third resulting in the first or third out of the inning. It seems like the Angels are making outs in more critical situations.
What the Anaheim Angels Should Do - FanGraphs Baseball
The Angels came in to today’s games trailing the Rangers for first place in the AL West by 5.5 games. They are also fifth in the Wild Card a half game behind Minnesota, two behind Chicago, four and a half back of Boston and seven and a half behind Tampa. Given the strength of the Twins, Red Sox and Rays, the Angels should not hold strong hopes or capturing that particular title.
What Graphs o' Fans Should Do: Get someone who actually knows what this major league team's name is.
How can anyone take what this website seriously when they can't even get the name of the team right?
Run-in with Ichiro leaves teen 'starstruck' - MLB.com: News
The local television station broadcasting the game zoomed in on the young girl, who obviously was thrilled with her meeting with Ichiro. She told a Japanese reporter that Ichiro had asked her if she was OK. "It was awesome," she said. "I am literally starstruck."
I had the same reaction when I met Davy Jones. (thanks to BBTF's Newsblog Discussion)
Dodgers Executive Received Funds From Team Charity - NYTimes.com
The Los Angeles Dodgers paid one of their highest-ranking executives more than $400,000 from the team’s charity in 2007, which accounted for one-quarter of the foundation’s nearly $1.6 million budget that year — compensation more in line with overseeing a $100 million charity.
I suppose there are worse teams to be fans of right now.
July 9 - BR Bullpen
1971 - The A's beat the Angels 1 - 0 in the longest shutout in American League history - 20 innings. Vida Blue strikes out 17 batters in 11 innings for the A's, while the Angels' Billy Cowan ties a major-league record by fanning six times. Both teams combine for 43 strikeouts, a new major-league record for incompetence (or pitching dominance, depending on one's perspective).
1972 - The Angels' Nolan Ryan strikes out 16 batters, including an American League-record eight in a row and three on nine pitches in the 2nd inning, as he stops the Red Sox on one hit. Carl Yastrzemski's one-out single in the 1st is the only safety: Ryan then racks up his eight K's and retires the last 26 consecutive batters.
Two frickiin' hits? Two frickin' hits:

When I was a student at USC during the LA riots
probably the most iconic and comical image that I remember was a burned-out shop wall across the street from school on which a rioter had spray painted "FREE RODNEY KING!"
Quad Fin Rider - July 9, 2010
iconic or ironic?
The most ironic image I ever saw was, I’m not making this up, a Caltrans worker leaning on his tractor, eating a doughnut, in front of a “men at work” sign. Wish I had a camera!
Rally Manatee - July 9, 2010
I'm predicting a sweep of the A's.
Nothing cures a losing streak better than that. This will be followed by a series with the hapless Mariners. I’m remaining optimistic.
We’ll come out of the ASB reinvigorated and ready to take back what’s rightfully ours. First place in the AL West.
Go Halos!

if an AL team not us gets Lee
Then we can’t win the WS. Not with a solid rotation, an awful bullpen, and an anemic, wounded offense. I would rather try to sell and beef up our upper minors instead of flailing about trying to win a division the Rangers should have already sewn up. Even if we did make the playoffs, we’re not going to beat the Yanks, Rays, or Twins, especially if one of them has Lee. If we were to get past Texas to begin with.
Kernel - July 9, 2010
Good call.
Rivera, Saunders, Pineiro, even Abreu would fetch us something, while clearing up some payroll flexibility for a Carl Crawford run this offseason.
sheisalovelyladyandmyapologiestoher - July 9, 2010
He's going to New York....
He was ALWAYS going to New York. And he’ll end up signing a contract extension, because they will throw more at him than any other team can even dream of doing. This is baseball 2010 style. Any player the Yankees want, they get and I am sick of it.
firebird81 - July 9, 2010
Lee I mean.
firebird81 - July 9, 2010
Let's face it,
You could have rightly included Crawford in your post also. The Yankees will get everyone they want to get. The only hope we have is if Artie starts up a West Coast superstation network and generates the kind of revenue they get in New York.
sheisalovelyladyandmyapologiestoher - July 9, 2010
There was talk of a network a few years ago.
Don’t know what’s going on there these days.
Rally Manatee - July 9, 2010
If the Skankees close the deal for Lee today
They would have a rotation Sabathia, Lee, Burnett, Pettitte and Hughes — that’s just plain f-ing sick
And since the trade only involves prospects, their surplus starter Javier Vazquez would then be free to be traded for more bullpen help
Quad Fin Rider - July 9, 2010
What I find interesting is that
the some of the people on this blog who were grilling others early on for their comments about how crappy the Halos were without the former stars, that “W6”,and were saying not to worry about Texas, they will melt in the heat of the summer, are now suggesting that we break up the team. Well……
Dono Romantico - July 9, 2010
Angel fan mood swings are dependent on each series outcome
We sweep a series and we start discussing the world series.
We get swept by the sox a week later, we want the team disbanded and Reagins fired.
Either way, we’re probably never completely happy.
RexTookMyStash - July 9, 2010
we ARE an emotional lot!

On to the PLAYFFS!
Let’s Go Angels
44FAN - July 9, 2010
For me personally, its more that this team doesn't look like a WS contender
I’d rather stock up for a WS run next year with Kendry back than win the west and get swept out by boston/ tampa bay in the first round.
On a different note, it disgusts me that so many teams are so uncompetitive that we all know there are only about 8 teams who have any kind of shot at making the playoffs and they are the same 8 teams year after year. When was the last time KC, BAL, TOR, CLE, OAK, SEA or TX really challenged for a world series trophy?
Balls and Strikes - July 9, 2010 via mobile
Compared to '02.
On paper, this Angels team should be much better than the team that DID win the WS. But on the field is where it counts, and the ‘02 Angels would snap this ’10 teams’ bra strap and spank its fanny.
Rally Manatee - July 9, 2010
Agreed on both counts
There’s just way too many problems and disasters with this year’s team to ever be able to compete with the Yanks, etc.
Maybe if we unload some folks, play the younger players, finish near the bottom, we can garner up some more top draft chocies again and try to add to the Mike Trout-led youngster revolution of 2012-2013 or so,

I didn't think they'd be willing to move Montero
They really don’t give a shit about their prospects, do they? I look forward to a few years from now when the only player on their roster not pushing 40 is Phil Hughes.
Suboptimal - July 9, 2010
Won't be the case.
You forgot about the fact that they have a lot of freakin’ money.
rmhalofan - July 9, 2010
They'll be paying those 40-year-olds to play on other teams.

Angels_48 - July 9, 2010
I hate to admit it.....
…but this team sucks. I used to be able to say if we made this or that adjustment we could pull out the season, but there’s so many gaps now that it would take a miracle to turn things around.
For years we’ve talked about having that one extra bat or arm to get past the playoffs, but now it’s more like six bats, and five arms.
Next year will be even worse without a complete shake-up – which should begin now. The only people I’d keep would be Morales, Kendrick, Aybar, and a few pitchers, Maybe Mathis if he starts batting again.
Lose the whole outfield, Izturis, Wood, Napoli, Willits, Kazmir, Rodriquez, Rodney, Piniero, Palmer, O’Sullivan and Fuentes. I’m tired looking at them.
SurfCityTom - July 9, 2010
Relax!
we are only 5.5 games back….we get Oakland this weekend…….and we have Seattle for 4 to start the second half….we’ll see in these next 7 games what this team is made of
Angels_48 - July 9, 2010
It is actually spelled RE LAX
ryanfea - July 9, 2010
RE LAX is the way go on these boards.
That and Karmis.
RexTookMyStash - July 9, 2010
I'd say we have even more than 7 games until we have to worry.
I think we’ll know if the fire sale is on by July 25th at the latest. At that point, we will have played 3 against NY, 3 against BOS, and 4 against TX. That is a week before the trade deadline, which is still plenty of time to buy or sell.
Rally Manatee - July 9, 2010
There is a thing called the trade deadline.
Ninja may still come through.
44FAN - July 9, 2010
With what?
A whole new bullpen? Replacements for Abreu, Rivera and Matsui who are having their worst career years? A replacement for the organization’s top young player who can’t hit his way out of a paper sack and who they’ve put too much into to get rid of at this point in his career? A temporary replacement for our top hitter who is out for the season but will be back next year?
