almost 2 years ago: CHICAGO - JULY 07: Manager Mike Scioscia #14 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim watches as his team takes on the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on July 7 2010 in Chicago Illinois. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)
Final Score in Chicago: Angels 2, White Sox 5 ...

Joe Saunders had his moments, Mike Napoli threw out a baserunner attempting to steal 2B, Howie Kendrick had a pair of hits, Torii Hunter did too and Scot Shields and Fernando Rodney combined for 2 and a third scoreless innings pitched.
But those were the only highlights on a night that the Angels left a combined 13 men on base, managed only 5 hits against ancient Freddy Garcia and struck out ten times. The team lost its third game in a row and a game in the standings to the Texas Rangers who, resting Vladimir Guerrero and Ian Kinsler managed a 4-3 victory over the Cakewalk Indians.
Rain is in the forecast for the Angels 11:00 AM (pst) start tomorrow.

Naps is a fine choice for BOTG
vladtheimpaler - July 7, 2010
I thought the Angels played a much better game than the score indicates.
Brandon Wood appears to be on the verge of busting out any game now. Just getting some bad breaks lately.

like I said during the game thread
He reminds me of one of the fat people from Wall-E
TheKingfish - July 7, 2010
Pretty much,
but his hair-do definitely reminds me of the movie HEAVYWEIGHT. There was a baseball scene as well, which makes sense bcuz they sucked.
Btw, why in the world does he wear his cap underneath his helmet? Just as ridiculous looking as Cervelli with his huge helmet.

So does Pierre

I would have liked to be in the front office meeting when they decided to bring this guy up
you know there was some low level temp who was too afraid to say anything but was thinking “What the hell are we doing?”
UCIHalo - July 7, 2010
He was doing really well in the minors, I thought it was worth giving him a shot too. Obviously it hasn't worked out though.

Blame of the past week: Tony Reagins.
bc56274 - July 7, 2010
I think he deserves a lot of blame for this season
for the signings of Matsui, Rodney and the trade to acquire Kazmir.
ryanfea - July 7, 2010
Matsui was a good signing. It hasn't worked out, but it sure seemed like a good idea at the time.
~MMP~ - July 7, 2010
agreed
as recently as the WS, he looked pretty damn good—as in MVP good
Raaddad - July 7, 2010
I hated the signing from day 1
It didn’t seem smart to me to sign someone at his age with no speed and no value on defense.
ryanfea - July 7, 2010
I said all along that we must resign Vlad cause he's gonna have a career year, but nooooo...
(boy am I full of shit . . . )
Raaddad - July 7, 2010
We'll keep your application on file for when Reagins is done.
Rally Manatee - July 7, 2010
Just file that under "Bullshit"
or, “Warning: Do Not Hire This Applicant”
Raaddad - July 7, 2010
The Angeles would have resigned him if they got the deal Texas did.
Vlad was looking for a multi year deal and the Angels weren’t willing to give it so they moved on. Vlad ended up only getting a one year plus and option for a second with Texas. Too bad it worked out that way but them’s the breaks.
Halo84653 - July 8, 2010
But how is it a good signing if it doesn't work out?
That sort of begs logic.
Half the fanbase (the crazy half) thought GMJ was a good signing at the time, but that didn’t work out either.
You have to judge a signing on outcomes, otherwise you can wipe a franchise out on the “best of intentions”.
Turks Teeth - July 7, 2010
I was judging the signings based on "Did they make sense at the time?"
There was very little to suggest GMJ would be worth the contract he got, besides the career year he had in his 30s.
There was almost nothing to suggest Rodney would be worth the contract he got.
There was pretty much nothing to suggest Matsui would struggle this badly, so I think it was a good signing.
~MMP~ - July 7, 2010
Reagins has made decisions that deserve to be criticized, I just don’t see the Matsui signing as one of those.
~MMP~ - July 7, 2010
Matsui was all Arte...
Billboards/Revenue
Reagins is just an Idiot with wandering eyes and mumbled speech.
Funke5ive - July 8, 2010
But you still can't call Matsui a good signing.
It may have been logical and well reasoned, but the fact that it didn’t work out prohibits it from being considered.
snowhor - July 8, 2010 via mobile
I wanted Vlad back,
but when it was apparent that he wasn’t coming back, Matsui seemed like the best alternative.
Rally Manatee - July 7, 2010
huh?
Wally's World - July 7, 2010
Matsui was a stupid baseball signing, marketing maybe, baseball stupid
And I’ve bitched about since day 1 on this site and he is exactly the Matsui I knew he would be. The Yankees didn’t even offer him a contract after winning the MVP of the world series, why you ask, because he can’t play an entire season, he needs long stretches of time off. And that is if he is just going to D.H. I was shocked, disgusted, and dumbfounded that the biggest move the Angels made in the off season was to sign Matsui. That was a huge F.O. fail.
steelgolf - July 8, 2010
Not that well.
We’ve won two of seven since last Wednesday. We had won three of six the week prior to last Wednesday.
Outside of two or three weeks in early-mid June, this team has been largely treading water. We’ve lost series to Kansas City and Milwaukee for hell’s sake — the friggin’ Royals have a +17 run differential on us this season — and it’s not that long ago that we were swept in a four game series by Boston. Now we may get swept in a four game series to the ChiSox.
This team has been out of first place 83 of the 86 games this season. That’s some chronic suck. I think we kid ourselves if we think the team has been doing pretty well.
Turks Teeth - July 7, 2010
Ok, so next year we'll have Kendry back, and we'll have Crawford, and
oh . . . god . . . I can’t face it . . .
The heck with the “chronic suck”, I just want some chronic, brotha
Raaddad - July 7, 2010
We've got success in our future.
Hopefully Reagins doesn’t trade the farm on some speculative moves before the trade deadline so that we can lose to Texas by two games in October instead of six.
Turks Teeth - July 7, 2010
But don't you think that there's a s**t load of guys "on the farm" that we could move
without it being a real problem. Other than Trout, Borrjos, Conger and a few pitchers, (and Q, of course), who ISN’T expendable to try and salvage this season and possibly next?
Raaddad - July 7, 2010
But what are we realistically going to get in a trade without losing any of those guys...
Nothing anyone will be happy about… that’s a fact.
thetooth - July 8, 2010
You are so right
unless its Crawford or Lee
Raaddad - July 9, 2010
I was referring to pre-Royals series. And it has been 2 months since Boston swept us, I wouldn't say that is "not that long ago" in terms of a baseball season.
And as far as the team playing well, I was mostly referring to June, I should have specified that.
Overall though, pretty well might have been an exageration, but they’ve at least been playing well enough to keep the gap between them and Texas close for the most part.
~MMP~ - July 7, 2010
Also, I think you misread the Royals run differential. We've outscored them this season 36 to 19

What pissed me off the most.
Here’s my ranking for the things that pissed me off the most in tonight’s game:
1) Aybar getting picked off. Every frickin’ game we have a base running gaff.
2) Napoli’s complete incapability to get a hit with men on base.
3) Seeing McAnulty followed by Wood. 2 easy outs in a row, guaranteed.
4) Abreu striking out looking and getting all huffy at the ump. You don’t get that
Yankee zone anymore! Swing dammit!
5) 5 errors from the opposition, and NO win?
Rally Manatee - July 7, 2010
6) Howie not going 2nd to 3rd on a deep fly ball out. Twice!
Fred Fredrix - July 7, 2010
how many outs when that happened?
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - July 8, 2010
doesn't matter.
Even with 2 down, having a runner on 3rd changes they way that have to pitch. The 2nd one was completely inexcuseable. Rios was running towards the center field wall on the catch, I thought sosh was gonna flip his lid after that one.
AlohaHalofan - July 8, 2010 via mobile
it does matter
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - July 10, 2010
how does it matter how many outs there were?
he should take the base regardless of how many outs… theres no way Rios throws him out.
AlohaHalofan - July 19, 2010
has anyone else
noticed that McAnulty wears his hat under his helmet? I have never seen a major league player do that. I think it just enhances his level of suck to an almost comical level. What in the hell were we thinking when we signed this guy?
“I know what will fix the first base problem, we’ll sign a fat Brandon Wood without the minor league credentials. Problem solved.”
Our front office has been making an abnormal amount of questionable decisions in the past year.
IE Angel - July 7, 2010
He was a minor league free agent who was signed to fill a leadership role for the Travelers and started playing really well.
At which point, the team decided to give him a shot at a bench role with the team, which obviously isn’t working well.
~MMP~ - July 7, 2010
Look closely at Chicago's leadoff man tomorrow
Juan Pierre wears his hat under his helmet. Also, Jackie Robinson did the same thing.
Teixeira Who? - July 8, 2010
More guys used to do it.
I think they can size helmets better now than they used to, so we don’t see it as much. With Pierre it’s probably because his head is pea sized. With McAnulty, I don’t know, maybe he’s just more comfortable that way.
Rally Manatee - July 8, 2010
I blame Izturis
Always injured. With him in the lineup we could bat him second and Howie could bat 6th and we score/drive in more runs. I’m assuming Mike is batting Howie second because of speed. Doesn’t want a slow guy batting second.
vladtheimpaler - July 7, 2010
Jeeezzzz
Look at the bags under Scioscia’s eyes.
Funke5ive - July 7, 2010
We need to borrow the Lakers shrink. . .
This team is Spazmatic !
Funke5ive - July 7, 2010
It's unfair playing shorthanded
With the vaunted offense of Jack Cust, Jr and Wood, no wonder we lost.
PieceOfAase - July 8, 2010
This team lacks heart....and talent
Soth’s bag of tricks won’t work on this group.
As for blaming Reagins for the on-the-field talent, he shares that with Soth. Make no mistake, Soth has a large say in the roster.
mustard_man - July 8, 2010
By the way...
Sign Kaleb Cowart now. Today. Stop jerking around and wasting time. The farm needs talent, get this guy into rookie ball now.
mustard_man - July 8, 2010
Spoiler
He’s not gonna sign with us. He is gonna go to play College baseball.
ryanfea - July 8, 2010
Where's Howie on the BotG list?
Come on. He didn’t advance on deep flies… TWICE. The first was on Juan Pierre, for Ghu’s sake! Pierre’s arm is just barely better than Damon! And the second, Rios was going BACK to get that ball.
I voted for Naps, because Joe was actually better than the line, he had some really shitty defense behind him.
