Angels wait in vain for a win in Chicago - latimes.com
There was little need to linger in the clubhouse after a 4-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field sent the Angels to their fourth defeat in five games and prompted more questions about a lineup that couldn't capitalize on the early departure of Jake Peavy. The White Sox starter twirled off the mound in obvious discomfort after delivering a second-inning pitch to Mike Napoli, departing because of a strained right-side muscle (video: Peavy hurts himself after pitch, leaves game). But the Angels could muster only one run in 71/3 innings against four relievers and have averaged only 4.1 runs over their last 15 games.Scioscia said he addressed his team's lack of focus after the players lost track of the number of outs in the fourth inning Monday — "Some things have been discussed," he said — but there were further breakdowns a day later. Hunter was caught stealing when he broke for second base too early in the second inning and Juan Rivera, in his first game back since being sidelined nearly a week because of blurry vision, was thrown out on a botched hit-and-run play in the fourth that might have cost the Angels a run (more video: Pierzynski makes the quick throw to second).

It's always something. Doesn't it seem like the Angels just can't get their act together this season? There's been stretches where it seemed like the starting pitching was awful, or the bullpen can't get anyone out, and now what's going on with the offense? And it's not just the lack of timely hitting. The club looks like they turn into a little league team once they do get on base, getting into rundowns, getting picked off, caught stealing, and running themselves out of innings. I understand that the Angels play aggressive baseball, putting pressure on the other team by taking the extra base and creating opportunities to score, but there's a difference between aggressive and stupid. And the Angels are being aggressively stupid on the bases. Here's the highlights: Frandsen makes a great play at third - Video - Kevin Frandsen fields the soft ground ball and fires to first to rob Alexei Ramirez of a base hit in the sixth inning (actually, no. In spite of Frandsen's effort, Ramirez was safe), Napoli ties the game with an RBI single - Mike Napoli slaps a single to center to plate Torii Hunter, tying the game at 1 in the fourth inning.

Angels-White Sox Preview - 7/7/10 - FOX Sports on MSN
While Freddy Garcia rarely loses to the Los Angeles Angels, Joe Saunders has never lost at U.S. Cellular Field. The pitchers meet Wednesday night when the Chicago White Sox look for a fourth straight win and continue a four-game series against the Angels. Garcia (8-3, 4.65 ERA) is 14-3 with a 2.53 ERA in 24 career starts versus the Angels, who he last faced Sept. 13, 2006. The ERA represents his lowest against any AL opponent, and he's 4-0 with a 2.29 ERA in his last five outings against them. Los Angeles will counter with Saunders (6-8, 4.59), who is 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA in four outings at U.S. Cellular Field for his lowest ERA in a stadium where he has made multiple starts. The left-hander turned in a second straight strong outing Friday, allowing one run over eight innings in a 2-1, 10-inning home loss to Kansas City.
Fan falls from stands at Rangers Ballpark - texasrangers.com
A male fan fell from the second-deck club level and into the lower bowl at the Ballpark in Arlington in the fifth inning of the Rangers' 12-1 win over the Indians on Tuesday. The incident delayed the game 16 minutes as ballpark personnel tended to him and four other injured fans. The fan flipped over the railing before landing on his back in section 35, which is roughly a 30-foot drop. He was conscious and able to move all of his extremities. After being stabilized, he was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.
Two things to look for in the above video link; watch the umpire's reaction as he sees the fan fall, and listen for the crowd's audible gasp. As totally freaky this incident is, I'm really surprised this doesn't happen more often.
A’s ask MLB to warn Angels of potential riots - The Orange County Register
The Angels play at Oakland on Friday through Sunday, and apparently riots are anticipated there when the verdict comes out in a murder trial (that is being held in Los Angeles).
Yikes.
Hunter happy this invitation never arrived - ESPN Los Angeles
"I did it in 2002 and my swing was boo-boo in the second half," Hunter said. "It was terrible. You hear about a lot of guys doing it, so I’m a witness. Guys who have been through it, they know." Because the Angels are hosting the game, Hunter said he likely would have accepted an invitation. "I’m torn about it, but I’ll probably have to, if they ask," he said. "It’s the right thing to do."
This year his attempted steals of third are "boo-boo".
Orioles Insider: Atkins era officially over - baltimoresun.com
The Orioles announced today that first baseman Garrett Atkins cleared waivers and was given his unconditional release. He is free to sign with another team, and he said previously that he would consider a minor league deal. But not with the Orioles.
Sign him. At least give him some time in Salt Lake City to see if he can help the team.

He said "dog doo"
"I did it in 2002 and I was dog-doo in the second half," said Hunter
http://fromthedugout.ocregister.com/
Which I like even better!
raskul - July 7, 2010
That's funny! "Can I have a dollar" quoted it as "boo-boo."
Who do you believe? Fishwrap or East-Coast Bias?
Downing Rules - July 7, 2010
That's interesting
Since when is “dog doo” offensive?
I mean besides the obvious reasons.
WiHaloFan - July 7, 2010
This is California
He should have said “gnar gnar”.
Commander_Nate - July 7, 2010
Lousy excuse
Lots of guys say they won’t do the HR Derby because it will “mess up their swing.” These are professional hitters, and the derby is basically a televised BP session. Someone like me, who plays the occasional pick-up game of softball on the weekend, might mess up their swing. My swing is whatever I feel like that day. But someone like Torii Hunter, with almost 9000 professional plate appearances, come on. Taking a few hacks during All-Star weekend won’t mess up shit.

Arte
Is on the cover of today’s usa today’s sports weekly. Its a good little article on the Angels and Arte’s effect on the club since buying them. Pick one up if anyone gets the chance. Its pretty cool.

Atkins
I can see offering him a AAA contract, and if he proves he’s found whatever he lost 2-3 years ago, bring him up. But right now he does not look like a major league player. Looks more like a Q.
Frandsen is better.
RallyMonkey5 - July 7, 2010
I say no to signing Atkins to a minor league deal.
You know he won’t find what he had a couple years ago, but the team would bring him up anyway.
snowhor - July 7, 2010 via mobile
Garcia generates those stats
vs. The Halos when he was with Seattle and good. He has since had major shoulder problems. He really shouldn’t be a difficult pitcher to pummel.
Like Kyle Davies…
jimmuscomp - July 7, 2010 via mobile
Sure hope you are right...
but most likely, he’s going to shut down our lineup in its current state of lethargy.
Downing Rules - July 7, 2010
Ahhh - I know
My last line was a dig at the Halos. Kyle Davies is that craptastic pitcher from the Royals that beat us last week…
jimmuscomp - July 11, 2010
Ranger game tonight...
After last nights horrific events (both the fall and the Rangers winning) occurred at The Ballpark in Arlington, I’m heading out there tonight to see them play the tribe. (It’s dollar hot dog night, why wouldn’t you go?)
It’ll be interesting to see how the Rangers handle tonight and if they do anything different.
SMUangelFan - July 7, 2010
Do you wear Angel gear?
Downing Rules - July 7, 2010
Is that a question?
Torii jersey and an Angel cap (with the 2002 World Series logo that I just point to when people start to yell).
SMUangelFan - July 7, 2010
The people in Oakland are crying out for justice! (and new DVD players)
Higz - July 7, 2010
So insensitive.
Its blu-rays they want.

insensitive bastards
Rev…snif,snif,……would you ban them already
Dono Romantico - July 7, 2010
The trial is being held in Los Angeles with an all white jury,
the people in Los Angeles may cry out for justice too. It has happened before.
44FAN - July 7, 2010
all white jury!
What!
Racists, they are all racists. Especially the White Males!
Dono Romantico - July 7, 2010
actually, no
seven white, four Hispanic, and one Asian
Higz - July 7, 2010
so that's 7 racists (especially the white males)
4 Hispanics, and
1 Asian.
Dono Romantico - July 7, 2010
Please don't "help" me
Higz - July 7, 2010
hahahahahaha
Dono Romantico - July 7, 2010
no, I'm serious
Higz - July 7, 2010
need a tissue
Dono Romantico - July 7, 2010
Asians have a tendency to not care for other races.
So that could go either way.
44FAN - July 7, 2010
I read it was all white in the Oakland newspaper.
44FAN - July 7, 2010
well what does that say about that Oakland newspaper?
somebody is not being honest here. It’s either the newspaper or our moral authority Higz. I’ll go with the newspaper not being honest.
Dono Romantico - July 8, 2010
Hmmmmmmm what's different from this years team
could it be missing leadership? Leadership is focusing and producing.
What the hell did everyone expect when you let the 3 players that defined team walk?
Figgins: Veteran Speed and Grit on the basepaths and on the field. Oh, and a W.S. ring.
Lackey: Our firey number 1 starter with a World Series Ring.
Vladdy: Even when he was below his normal self, he was feared and a certain Hall of Famer!
When this team hits rough waters, as all teams will do throughout a long season, it’s not only up to the manager to get them through but team leaders as well.
Dono Romantico - July 7, 2010
The only one of them doing any real leading now is Vlad and it's mostly being done with his bat
Other than the first few weeks of the season, I haven’t heard much about Lackey or Figgins on their new teams. This team’s main problem is it’s bullpen. Torii and Abreu can’t have much of an impact there.
Commander_Nate - July 7, 2010
I'll bite...
…I don’t believe it’s a lack of leadership. I think there’s plenty of that. We are currently 46-40. Last year after 86 games, we were 49-37, 6 games better. Differences from last year?
1) Our competition has gotten better, specifically the Rangers. They have a decent blend of veterans and rookies, their pitching has steadily improved year to year, their team speed has increased (helping their pitcher’s ERA’s), and they lucked out with Vlad.
2) Our offense is weaker, especially without Morales. Napoli has cushioned the impact to some degree, but this team misses Morales bat. Would Vlad have been better than Matsui? At bat, yes. Base-running, no.
3) Base-running is a friggin’ nightmare. It has been a liability in the past few years. With fewer base-runners, it’s now a major liability. I just don’t understand the philosophy here, and why the coaches/manager don’t stop our suicidal base-running.
4) In contrast to the Rangers, our team speed is declining. I don’t know how much Figgins would have helped here. He isn’t getting on base much for Seattle. Figgins isn’t missed but his speed is.
5) I don’t think we miss Lackey’s leadership as much as we miss the 2006-2008 Kazmir, and the 2007-2008 Saunders.
6) Our catching defense is really pathetic. Again, I can’t imagine Scioscia tolerating such poor output from our 3 catchers. Base-runners gone wild…
7) The bullpen is actually worse than last year. Remarkable, considering the problems last year and the amount of money spent on relievers this year. We don’t seem to have any young guys that come up from the minors and consistently get outs (with the exception of Rodriguez for 3-4 games).
The above acknowledged, the playoffs are still well within reach. With a few breaks (not the Morales kind), we could easily catch and pass the Rangers.
sothball - July 7, 2010
What happens with the Rangers ownership situation is a big factor.
If it lags on, which all indications right now indicate, they will not be able to trade for pitching which could hurt them significantly down the stretch. They have a couple starting pitchers with injuries and Harden is a real liability with them going forward. They do have youth on their side having been so bad all these years it has netted them quite a few prospects.
