Final Score in Chicago: Angels 2, White Sox 9

The Angels expensive lefty Scott Kazmir teetered on the brink of being labeled permanently gutless as he hung flat sliders on perfect tees for hungry White Sox hitters eager to please a holiday crowd desperate to be kept from thinking of their putrid bankrupt state of Illin'-Noise. Human cancer A.J. Pierzynski asked for an appeal from the cornerbase umpire on every batter and was cheered for his efforts by the pudgy Ditka-clone crowd in Cookie Cutter Cellular Park.
Despite the attempts to give the game away by stoneless Kaz, the Angels actually brought the tying run to the on-deck circle in the 8th inning ina 7-2 ball game but pinch hitter Mike Napoli struck out swinging to end the only threat of the game.

Dear Kazmir,
Please stop taking away good mojo for this team. Please pitch better next time
From,
Angel fans

Clutch - July 5, 2010
Please pitch BEST every time...
just asking “better” means he can still suck, but just not as much as the time before.
Downing Rules - July 6, 2010
Yeah, but asking for his best might not be any better.

I think its time in Kazmir’s career
to finally retire or move to the BP. There he can pitch his arm out for 1 inning.
phoenix15 - July 5, 2010
Kazmat...
In various forms can cause death, serious injury, long-lasting health effects, and damage to your bullpen.
Funke5ive - July 5, 2010

Raaddad - July 5, 2010
The game was over when Soth filled out the lineup card
That said, Kazmir’s performance inspired me to go online and purchase a new jersey in his honor…

Big Easy Halofan - July 5, 2010
and he's an all start to boot
eyespy - July 5, 2010
If he can't throw his slider as an "out" pitch, he's done as a starter
BTW – the help from Salt Lake City looked spectacular tonight too.
mustard_man - July 5, 2010
In Matsuiland
the lines dont move fast either.
bighig - July 5, 2010
If Barry Zito can turn it around...
maybe Kaz can to; althought Zito pitches in the NL and had a few years to “find his stuff.”
SenorChuckles - July 5, 2010
Zito had 7 years and $126m to figure it out
Let’s all hope the Halo’s do not have that much patience with BBazmir (he does not get the “K” back in his name until he earns it…)

i see what you did there

BOTG=Soth
Lackluster offense, that line up today was so sub-par. Yet another bonehead strategic move by Scioscia!
HALO N BRIMSTONE - July 5, 2010
Might have been brilliant actually......
Think about it.
late game last night………late flight out to the East……….plus earlish start time and its a 4 game series.
Methinks some Soth psycho-analysis was in play here.
norcaliangelsfan - July 5, 2010
Naw
Soth is just using the “talent” the front office has provided him. Look at the win/loss record so far; Soth has really done a great job maximizing the results given the players available.
mustard_man - July 5, 2010
The team currently has 2 injured outfielders, though at least Abreu was able to DH today.
The only difference in the offense Scioscia chose to make really was giving Napoli a day off, at putting McAnulty in there instead.
~MMP~ - July 5, 2010
Wait, what happened to Abreu?
Can’t believe I missed it…he looked fine from section 133 on Saturday!
Clutch - July 5, 2010
He got hit on the elbow by a pitch yesterday, and it was still sore today, so they didn't want to have him play the OF
~MMP~ - July 5, 2010
my guess
after the last closed door meeting, they gave Kaz one more try to not shit the bed before moving him to the pen. then they gave him the B squad to make sure he’s done starting for a while.
daze - July 5, 2010
+1
I said the same thing to my wife when I saw the lineup. I imagine Sosh said he`d send him to the hill one more, but he`d better br ready tp PITCH his way to a victory.
Rally Manatee - July 5, 2010 via mobile
You guys are being so negative!
He only let in 7 ER.
I think that is still below the average for our pitching staff…
RedFog - July 5, 2010
Our starting pitching has been pretty good, outside of Kazmir, actually
~MMP~ - July 5, 2010
Joe’s
been solid his past few outings. Santana and Pinerio are becoming more consistent, Weave is just awesome, only hole in this rotation im afraid to say is Kazmir.
phoenix15 - July 5, 2010
I'm not watching anymore Kazmir starts
Unless they are uber-important games.

Trade Saunders , Kazmir and Napoli for Cliff Lee.
Ed@northridge - July 5, 2010
That sure sounds like a fair trade!
~MMP~ - July 5, 2010
And by that, I mean we should hold out for Felix Hernandez and Gutirriez as well.
~MMP~ - July 5, 2010
can I haz Ichiro
eyespy - July 5, 2010
Maybe we could just join the 2 teams together as one
Consolidation is the answer—
The Pacific Coast Angel Mariners,
or maybe “The Rhyme of the Ancient Halo Mariner”
Raaddad - July 5, 2010

LL was renamed "Luckout Landing"
Due to the fact that luck is the prevailing excuse to explain away the fact that the Mariners are a terrible team. Having Felix Hernandez and Cliff Lee on that roster is like having chrome wheels on a rusted out 1974 Ford Pinto.
XYZ123 - July 6, 2010

ryanfea - July 5, 2010
Apparently he's going to the Twins or something
Commander_Nate - July 5, 2010
Sheeit.
yup, but then again teams are making offers. The news comes down to if the M’s accept it. Hope the Twins get Lee—assuming we aren’t in the sweepstakes.
SenorChuckles - July 5, 2010
As long as it's not the Yanks or Sux
or Dodgers for that matter
Raaddad - July 5, 2010
I think this deal might go down. From the reactions of the Twins’ blog, it seems like they’re overpaying.
SenorChuckles - July 5, 2010
Really? What does it appear they're paying or giving up for him?
(Btw, What do you think of the Blake pick-up?)
Raaddad - July 5, 2010
Well, I don't know.
The M’s would get a “top prospect” in Ramos (in AAA) and Hicks (low A). Ramos has great D for a catcher with some “pop”. Hicks is a ‘08 1st round pick that is a potential 5-tool player. I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I’m a scout, but Conger seems like a better prospect and maybe the Angels can make an intriguing offer.
I think our friends at SS&R already gave us the low-down on Blake: Can hit 3’s, nice contributer—passing wise, but his speed will hold him back on defense. I hope LA signs Bell and get Fish to return on the 2.5 million contract. High hopes though.
SenorChuckles - July 5, 2010
best comment of the season
that would awesome. with 4 starters and no firstbaseman we`d be set!
Rally Manatee - July 5, 2010 via mobile
Hey, we still have Q, so 1st base would be covered!
~MMP~ - July 5, 2010

eyespy - July 5, 2010
Lots of first baseman out there hoping to get a chance ....
Include Casey Kotchman in the trade ….Problem solved .
Ed@northridge - July 5, 2010
Casey Kotchman is garbage
~MMP~ - July 5, 2010
Offensively at least.
But it doesn’t matter, because there is no way the Mariners would accept that offer for Lee.
~MMP~ - July 5, 2010
Santana , Weaver , Piniero and Lee will take care of the Yanks .
Ed@northridge - July 5, 2010
Yes do it!!
aldo H - July 5, 2010
Missed the game but....
…..when we only score 2 runs, it’s clear Kazmir wasn’t the only Angel who played like a sucky loser today.
Robviously - July 5, 2010
when the O puts up 11 the day before,
they get a pass.
Kaz continues to fail at an impressive rate. One might inquire the thought process in shipping him out every 5th start.
Maybe surgery is the answer. Frontal lobotomy… is that where the slider is hiding?
clover_black - July 5, 2010
Scotty Ramone
sweet
eyespy - July 5, 2010
Those 11 runs make up for the suckage of the previous two games and last week.
Have to have some consistency before they get another pass today.

Our offense SUCKED against the Royals.
That series made me not want to watch baseball anymore, despite the fun of yesterday’s blowout.

Bag of Balls>Dontrelle Willis>Mariah Carey's First Pitch>........Scott Kazmir
Bullpen or SLC, Kaz — take your pick! Merely a demotion is too good for you right about now.
PieceOfAase - July 5, 2010
Dontrelle Willis
Butcher can fix him. . .
Funke5ive - July 6, 2010
Some positives
Kazmir was actually throwing a few really good sliders.
In my opinion, this was just his first real game trying to throw his slider for strikes. Although he got shelled, it was mainly because 1) he was trying to throw his slider for strikes = a lot of breaking balls in the zone = HRs, 2) he ran into a very hot team.
Despite his lackluster performance today, I’m actually interested to see how Kazmir does to mix his slider with a well located 92 fastball and his improving change-up.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he does very well from here on out, if he’s got a good hang of his slider.
Slyintine - July 5, 2010
I'll be optimistic, yet again.
I actually understand what you mean. He was actually releasing some sliders in there. Atleast in the first 5 innings.
You think the wind had any factor with his control?
maze88 - July 5, 2010 via mobile
I don't think so
It was mostly the breaking balls in the zones. He was able to get Konerko to swing at a slider out of the zone, so that is a good sign that he’s slowly able to work that slider in.
Probably what factored the most was his changeup, which get got burned a couple of times on because he didn’t throw them out of the zone like he was supposed to.
So some control issues. But the sliders that I saw from Kazmir looked really good. He’s pitching a little less scared than normal. And it looks like he got consistent 91-92 MPH fastball velocity that game.
Slyintine - July 6, 2010
Kazmir appears to be our Dice K.
He pitches like a girl. A clueless, scaredy-cat girl.
bc56274 - July 5, 2010
I think that was the last we see of Kazmir for awhile
The front office will start to look for a temp in the system, then this time next week will be schmoozing with the big wigs at the All Star game looking for a trade or two. Somebody out there likes us better than the Rangers, or has Emperor Bud’s “Plan Z” swung into overdrive.
eyespy - July 5, 2010
Btw, did anyone pick Thompson for the pregame question?
or was he even an option on the list?
Thought I had a chance with 2 out in the 6th and a 2-1 game,
Kaz maybe going one more inning,
and what looked like called K3…inning over…
but noooooooooooooo……………
Raaddad - July 5, 2010
I actually did
choose him.
maze88 - July 5, 2010 via mobile
Shoot Kazmir into the Sun
Ok, maybe a little harsh. Time for some DL slash rehab at AAA or something I guess.
vladtheimpaler - July 5, 2010
ha!
what a great mythic death that would be

Re:Kazmir
He looked like he was going to cry Private Pyle…
A D B - July 6, 2010
Scott Kazmir’s slider
Is flat as piss on a board
Like Angels offense
raskul - July 6, 2010
Watching the game, the difference was he began tipping the slider in the 6th
Early on in the game, he was using the same mechanics for the fastball and the slider- effectively hiding it. He must have tired in the 6th… at some point in the near 30 pitches he threw that inning… and slipped back into evil kazmir mechanics. His arm comes way up before dropping down to the side a bit. Its pretty easy to pick up whats coming and then wait on it just like konerko and guillen did.
On the positive side, if he can fix his mechanics and stay in the same arm slot, we should see much more of the innings 1-5 kazmir soon.
Balls and Strikes - July 6, 2010
Honestly, Kazmir is done as a starter...
for now at least. His young arm is burned out. He looks like a slightly better Dontrelle Willis, and his velocity is down from his prime years. He’ll probably never be an effective starter again…or then again, maybe he’ll have a career rebirth later on, like our very own Joel Pineiro. Heck, maybe he should start working on a sinker now…
