The Minnesota Twins has acquired All-Star pitcher Matt Capps from the Washington Nationals for a top catching prospect.
The OC Register staff are keeping track of the baseball deals as they happen. The latest deal has Capps going to the Twins. Why couldn't the Angels have done this deal? Capps isn't great, but he appears to be better than anyone the Halos have in their bullpen. Plus, and I could be wrong, but it doesn't look like the Twins had to give much to acquire him. I hope one day someone with true "inside" information writes a book about how major league front offices are run. Things such as; what it takes to pull off a deal, what it takes to sign free agents, and how talent is evaluated. Until that day, I'll be forever clueless as to why some deals don't happen while others do, how some teams make trades while others don't, and why players sign with one team over another.

Texas can only hope Cantu contributes to the playoff push as Tommy Hunter (8-0, 2.31 ERA) has done. The right-hander won his third straight start since the All-Star break Sunday against the Angels (52-52), limiting them to three runs and three hits over 6 1-3 innings in a 6-4 victory.Hunter's lone performance in Anaheim didn't go nearly as well, however. He surrendered seven runs in 2 1-3 innings of an 11-0 loss Sept. 28.The Angels held a 3 1/2-game lead on Texas at this point last season but now sit nine behind the Rangers.Ervin Santana (9-7, 3.55) might be able to help. A sweep this weekend will bring the Angels back to 6 games behind the division leading Rangers. Obviously, six is better than the nine games behind the Angels currently sit, but 6 games is a huge margin to make up this far into the season. Making matters worse is how well Texas is playing and their ability to swing deals to strengthen their roster. Interestingly, they've been able to add two players while not adding payroll...kind of a best-of-both-world situation.

The swagger has turned into a bunch of once-feared hitters making the walk to the plate and, a minute or so later, making a quiet walk back. Each at-bat used to be a battle. That was their persona: Make the opposing pitcher throw and throw until you have taken all his bad ones, fouled off several of his good ones, and then completed the torture by slapping a base hit off his kneecap. No longer. These have become the passive Angels. Get behind in the count, 0-2, and then have the base umpire signal that you are out on a check swing.
I'm not too sure the Angels really had any "swagger", what they had was a team who played good baseball.

It's more than A-Rod
He’s easy pickings because of the annual salary he now pulls, but there are other players also with deferred salary, which is apparently little more than a promise from the current Texas ownership thanks to the bankruptcy filings.
The players are unsecured creditors, and they are last in line behind the others who have a secured credit against Hicks and the team. A-Rod is speaking up, but he is doing so on behalf of a half-dozen or so players who are less visible but no less owed money by the Rangers.

Well, I would have.
We have two catchers ahead of Conger (whether you agree with that or not), and we have Wilson as well. We are loaded at catcher and our bullpen could use the help.
I would have meant less Fuentes in important situations, and a longer term replacement for him when we don’t bring him back (honestly who is our closer going forward??)

Ramos has enormous upside
Of course, he could turn out to be Brandon Wood in a catcher’s mask, but this much seems clear: The Twins could/should have flipped him for more than Matt Capps, and 2) it made sense to keep him.
Mauer will most likely be transitioned into more and more DH assignments over the next couple of seasons to save wear and tear on his body, and Ramos would have been an ideal choice to be #2 and apprentice behind Mauer, eventually taking over the job. The Twins have far too much money invested in Mauer’s future to keep him behind the plate full time for too many more years.

Although who have they given up that has come back to bite them?
The only one I can think of is the Matt Garza/Bartlett for Delmon Young deal, but they weren’t really prospects any more, and Young is finally showing some life. They obviously got hosed on that Santana deal, but Santana wasn’t a prospect either.
I guess I just don’t remember any other recent examples.
I think this is a bad trade for the Twins. They sold low on Ramos, although from what I’ve heard, Ramos wasn’t all that happy with Mauer’s extension and his struggles this year have at least something to do with motivation. If true, the Twins may never have gotten great value for him as long as he was sulking.

That’s absolutely not worth a top prospect, especially at a valuable position like catcher. Matt Capps is a fine pitcher, but he wouldn’t be closing in many places other than Pittsburgh or Washington with a 4.05 career xFIP. I wouldn’t have minded signing him after he was non-tendered, but this is an unexpected spasm of irrationality from Twins management.

About the Capps Trade.

One of the things that I would like to know is, on the presumption that Reagins DID get a chance to talk to the Nats, what would the Nats have been demanding out of the Halos in return?
We fans, lacking true knowledge, assume that there is some sort of equivalency being sought between teams contending to make a trade. This does not have to be true. For all we know, Reagins DID have a shot at Capps but the Nats wanted Trout from us. Not getting any shot at Trout, they accepted Ramos from the Twinkies. And there is no reason NOT to believe that the Nats, in that case, would be fully aware that Trout is much grander prize than Ramos.
So, in this example, the Nats might not have cared to accept equivalancy to Ramos from within the Halos organization. From their perspective, they might as well have said to themselves that they have Ramos from the Twins as the minimum, so if the Halos want Capps the Halos need to go big or go home.

Yeah, that would be fascinating. But each conversation is its own "corner case".
An entire magazine article could be written out of every verbal exchange, as it dealt with all parties and their perspectives. And this, whether anything came of the conversations or not.
This, I think, is one of the main reasons that Moneyball was so successful.

You can get a pretty good prospect right now
For a lefty reliever who can strike people out. I think Fuentes would be pretty good in a loogy role. I don’t think many teams would want his contract though. So how about the Angels offer to pay his contract (or most of it) in return for a real prospect?
Yankees could use him to set up Rivera. Red Sox are in the hunt for bullpen help. Offer Fuentes for Joba Chamberlain, or else one of the AAA starters they were rumored to be trying to deal for Lee or Haren.
From the Red Sox, You aren’t going to get Kelly or Iglesias, but I’d love to see if they’d deal Ryan Kalish.

In 2007, the Colorado Rockies were 6 games back in their division on september 1, but went on a tear and ended their season with a 90-73 record, earning them a play-off berth. They went on to win the WS that year. If our team gets its act together before they are mathematically eliminated, anything is possible.
