There is a reason Scot Shields hasn't made a start since 2003. Joel Pineiro was a late scratch this afternoon because of a left oblique strain, leaving the ball to--how can I say this politely--the struggling former setup man, who was also formerly a starter. Unfortunately, it didn't go well. Shields gave up two solo homers and loaded the bases before Mike Scioscia took the ball back with two outs in the second inning.
The middle innings gave some hope to those of us who have now given up on 2010. Francisco Rodriguez and Rich Thompson, two minimum wage relievers fresh from Salt Lake, pilloried the Red Sox for 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, striking out seven while walking only one. However, Josh Beckett had little trouble holding down an Angel lineup including four middle infielders, two senior citizens, a light-hitting third-string catcher, and big slugging Reggie Willits. The Angels were fortunate to scratch out even three runs on a series of defensive misplays.
After the great work from the scrubs pitching for free, Fernando Rodney was asked to actually earn his $6 million paycheck by protecting a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning. Walk, walk, infield single (misplayed by Callaspo), grand slam. Just like that, Mephistopheles's previously charmed ERA normalized at a level commensurate to his skill, or rather, his lack thereof. At least it was satisfying to watch Michael Kohn record his first big league strikeout by hanging a golden sombrero on Big Juicin' David Ortiz.
It's about time to face it. The Angels have now fallen back to .500 after 104 games. They're in third place. They've been outscored by their opponents. They have three starters left with Pineiro possibly missing the rest of the season. Their best hitter broke his leg. The bullpen is a disaster. And so on. Do we have to wait until they are mathematically eliminated to start thinking about next season? Derrek Lee actually did the Angels a favor.

Shields
gave up 2 solo shots. Rodney gave up a GS. This season’s basically over. There’s no offense left, no hustle left in our corner OFs, bullpen is full of overpayed, sucky guys, and the Halo’s best option of actually staying in the race, the SP, is now shot with Pinerio out.
phoenix15 - July 28, 2010
Rodney turns out to be just what I knew he was.
And that blows.
I wrote this in January. Many disagreed, and continued to throughout the season.
It sucks to be vindicated in a sweep to the Boston beanshooters. But Fernando Rodney is not a good pitcher. The two cheaper alternatives I proposed in off-season, Oliver and Capps respectively, have ERAs of 1.90 and 2.80 respectively right now.
Turks Teeth - July 28, 2010
Sucks to be right sometimes
The satisfaction of having your opinion vindicated is overwhelmed by the disappointment with reality. Right now I blame reality for agreeing with me.

Congratualations--you win
We got exactly what the Tigers faithful told us we were going to get:
A very good closer and a shitty 8th inning guy. Big surprise.
Soth did not use Rockin Rodney correctly.
Raaddad - July 28, 2010
Is this for serious?
If it’s sarcasm, rock on. But if not, can you explain why a pitcher is good in one inning and bad in another? I’m not a bad driver on Tuesdays but a good driver on Wednesdays.
Suboptimal - July 28, 2010
the mentality
might not be there for Rodney in a non pressure situation. Pitching is pretty different than driving a car. The leadoff man is good example.
phoenix15 - July 28, 2010
Not to be disrespectful
But “mentality” is bullshit. Rodney is the same pitcher whatever spot you put him in. His career numbers in high leverage and low leverage are exactly the same. Even his ERA this year is now in line with what it was last year, when he was a closer. He just got lucky on where those runs were distributed last year.
Same thing with the lead-off guy. The #1 batter is only guaranteed to lead off an inning once per game. Just about anyone could be leading off the 4th, 5th, 6th inning, etc., and the job is always the same: get on base. There’s just no evidence that someone’s place in the batting order affects their performance, with the exception of players who might get pitched around because of the batter behind them.
Suboptimal - July 28, 2010
Even Biggsy apologized yesterday for drinking the Koolaid.
He said that when F-Bomb was signed, that Soth and Butch wouldn’t tolerate the inconsistency. Biggsy admitted he was wrong on that.

So a tied game in the 8th is a non-pressure situation?
snowhor - July 28, 2010 via mobile
I couldn't believe in the offseason how no one believe how bad Rodney really is.
People just focused on the Tony Reagins method of judging relief pitchers strictly by Save percentage and saw FernRod’s shiney numbers.
That and he was supposed to prevent Fuentes’ option from vesting. I never understood why this was supposed to be a good thing, replacing a mediocre reliever with a bad one.

I still don't think he's that bad.

I came to terms with this being a potential lost season pre-all star game
We just haven’t looked good offensively and defensively all year. The Texas series and this one is just showing us up.
You win some and you lose some, we’ll be stronger next year when we can clear some of the dead wood. Hopefully we get a chance to see Bourjos, Kohn, Conger for a little bit.
TheQuestforMerlin - July 28, 2010
The only reason we even scored in this game
was because of Reggie Willits and Bobby Wilson. They either drove in or scored every single run……. How sad is that. Guess our 4 MI approach isn’t working huh Tony?

Willis may not contribute that much with the bat, but seeing his plays, he actually shows he wants to win unlike Rivera.

*See, Make yourself feel better by making stuff up, page 29.
Wally's World - July 28, 2010
It was my understanding at the time
That Oliver wanted to retire or return to Texas. This stemming from the scam he unfortunately got involved in, and the fact that he lives in Texas. I am looking for sources where I heard this currently.
linkbruin - July 28, 2010
They always say stuff like that, but the question is , do they really mean it?
Wally's World - July 28, 2010
He's 39
And has a family. And he just lost a lot of his money. I think he meant it.
linkbruin - July 28, 2010
he wouldn't mean it if we offered him more . . .
Especially if what you said about the money is correct. AND even still, that means there was no good reason not to offer him arb. We would have got another top 100 draft pick.
Wally's World - July 28, 2010
It's been cited here numerous times...
Darren Oliver was not going to play in Anaheim unless offered arbitration, which would have been overpaying. Now, in hindsight, it would have been better to overpay him as opposed to Rodney. If that’s the gripe, then so be it. We did not ‘let him get away’ as I keep hearing over and over and over.
Downing Rules - July 28, 2010
Why would arbitration have necessarily overpaid?
He made $3.665 million in 2009. A 25% raise would have put him at about $4.5 million, which is less than what the Angels shelled out for Rodney. It’s more than what Texas signed him for ($3.5 million), but still less than what he’s worth.
Suboptimal - July 28, 2010
You did the math for me...
$4.5M > $3.5M. Overpaid, he would have been. Hindsight is easy to point out here.
Downing Rules - July 29, 2010
Yah seriously ^^
The logic to have not offered him arb is flawed. Face it, It was a big mistake.
Wally's World - July 28, 2010
It's been said here numerous times, never cited.
snowhor - July 28, 2010 via mobile
yes, it has... f&*k, I will go dig it up.
Downing Rules - July 29, 2010
Darn...
I had something written twice, but too many presses of the “backspace” key screwed it up.
YOu are right. There is nothing.
I found a Bill Plunkett article from 12/2/09 saying that Reagins was aware that DO was going to play in 2010 and that the Angels were interested in signing DO. However, they felt that $5M (likely arb value) was too much. As it is, DO got a lower 2010 salary compared to 2009’s. I wonder what the Halos offered him? Must have been less than $3.5M, which is a SHAME.
We blew this one, big time.
Downing Rules - July 29, 2010
Yeah I looked it up the other day too
I’m not sure where this info originally came from.
linkbruin - July 30, 2010
Reagins saw that FRod had a boatload more Saves than DOliver.
Bill Bavasi taught him what to look for in relievers, Stoneman never did.
snowhor - July 28, 2010 via mobile
The same Stoneman who signed Justin Speier to a 3-year deal?
blochead - July 28, 2010
Stoneman had successes mixed in with his relief pitcher failures.
I’ll take the guy who gives us 3 good relievers for every 2 bad ones over the guy who gives us 0 good relievers for every relief pitching move he makes.

Was wondering this same thing...
Very Anti the Collapso trade. We traded 2 pitchers for a player we already have 3 of…? WTF? Time to turn him around to Detroit or someone else.
WE NEED RELIEF PITCHING…not another worthless middle infielder. Why not let Wood play again for the rest of the season? We look pretty done to me.
K3YEROUT - July 28, 2010
Agreed give him a chance when there not in contention
Less pressure…rather then starting him in a position where the angels are in contention.
Maybe instead of “don’t suck or you’ll lose the season for us, and make the FO look bad”…the can say “If you suck, don’t worry the season is already lost, and the FO sucks ass” – He’ll do much better I must say
IWishWeStillHadTimSalmon - July 28, 2010
I thought for sure Callaspo would be flipped in a day or two.
But here he is, right at home, not hitting with the best of them.
Rally Manatee - July 28, 2010
That is a great idea! Let's put in players who are even worse and hit less than the current lineup!
Wally's World - July 28, 2010

There we go thats the spirit
but your probably right…. I just need to let go…there are more fish in the sea…good bye woody. goodbye.
IWishWeStillHadTimSalmon - July 28, 2010
who knows
with no pressure perhaps he’ll perform, adding some value so we can trade him in the offseason. right now he is worthless. if he plays and continues to suck its not like its costing us the playoffs, or hurting his value. basically he’s got nowehre to go but up…I hope.
2pintsofbooze - July 28, 2010
Wood
after jerking him around the last 2 years, just release him? what would it hurt to just give him the last 2 months? i personally am holding out hope our season isn’t over but reality is reality, why not give him the last 2 months and see what we have. he’s had enough time rotting on the bench, lets see if he can turn it around.
HALO_86 - July 28, 2010
you mean
when he went 5 for 5 in closing games for Fuentes?
from what I’ve heard/read, Rodney is good only when closing games. his numbers show the same. and yet, he is our 8th inning guy.
2pintsofbooze - July 28, 2010
Really, why?
Fuentes’ option for 2011 is predicated upon his finishing 55 games this season.
Thus far, he’s finished 25. Highly unlikely he’ll close out 30 more before the end of the season. An Angels team doing a first-rate impression of the Hindenburg landing at Lakehurst won’t provide the opportunities to close out games; what is happening now will cost Fuentes $9M in 2011 salary.
I’m not complaining, just explaining.

bc56274 - July 28, 2010
Yes, and our collection would have been nearly complete! Dang it Lee!
Wally's World - July 28, 2010
Actually if we were in contention it wouldn't be that bad
Lee had a good second half last year (if I recall correctly) and could provide some much needed offense (pushing Napoli to DH or C, maybe forcing Mathis out.. if Scioscia deemed it).
Also, as most people are forgetting, if we didn’t offer him arbitration (which we wouldn’t do with Morales coming back) we could also get a couple of draft picks out of it. He’s a class B guy now, if he gets better he could push himself into class A status.
TheQuestforMerlin - July 28, 2010
but the key thing is in your fist sentence
we aren’t in contention.
so the question stands, wtf is Reagins doing?

blochead - July 28, 2010
In theory we were in contention 3 days ago
Derrek Lee said he’s been pondering the decision for a bit. I doubt the offer was made after todays game.
Nevertheless, the deal would still be interesting had he accepted. Even now, when we look out of it.
TheQuestforMerlin - July 28, 2010
Yes, that's the point
It wasn’t that Reagins just found Hendry’s cell number and gave him a call. I am sure Reagins would have wanted Lee while the team was still in Arlington to give some offensive boost. The guy has hit much better since early July and gave signs of starting to heat up (though we can only speculate if his “heat” would be negated in the Lockeroom O’ Suckage in Anaheim).
As it was, Lee let Reagins off the hook by turning him down today, since I would imagine Reagins would have had to back out of negotiation after the play of the last week. No sense in giving anyone to the Cubs for the rental of a player to a team firmly stuck in Neutral.
George Kaplan - July 28, 2010

RexTookMyStash - July 28, 2010
My guess
He was born in Sacramento. He might feel comfortable in his childhood home.
For whatever reason, he has felt very comfortable playing in front of Cubs fans and in Wrigley. He apparently gets along well with Pinella, but even though Pinella is gone at the end of this season it doesn’t mean Lee wants to leave as well.
George Kaplan - July 29, 2010
At Least
One good thing happened today. Angels probably dodged a bullet with this one. I can’t imagine what they would have given up, but whoever or whatever would likely have had more value than Derrek Lee on a .500 team. With Pineiro going down for the next couple of months, the Angels need to either W6G or start preparing for 2011.

I'm just asking for a link...if there is one thats all thanks for the Info :)
I can understand the aspect of not wanting to move cause of special needs children….my nephew is the same and it would be hard to find doctors who know him and understand his needs
- kinda glad he not coming though don’t need him
I checked CBS Sports not on there unless it was a long time ago
IWishWeStillHadTimSalmon - July 28, 2010
There's a fanshot with a link. Go.
Rally Manatee - July 28, 2010
why would he want to come here
we aren’t in contention, so might as well make the same amount of money and not uproot your family for 2 months of playing time.
there is literally no benefit for him by coming here.
2pintsofbooze - July 28, 2010
"previously charmed ERA normalized at a level commensurate to his skill, or rather, his lack thereof."
Nice one Rev. I was thinking exactly the same thing. The way I figure it, if Rodney walks the first two guys he faces, he deserve’s to lose.
Wally's World - July 28, 2010
Suboptimal, actually
yeswecan - July 28, 2010
Nice one Sub. . .
Wally's World - July 28, 2010
There'll be no mistaking the Rev's next Halos writeup for anybody else's
I suspect it will be a fine blend of toxic, radioactive & bio-hazardous
Quad Fin Rider - July 28, 2010
and hopefully it will bait LSB enough to stir their trolls into a mad frenzy
yeswecan - July 28, 2010
The plus side.
At least Pineiro didn’t earn a loss or no decision because of the sucky bullpen and lack of offense.
Rally Manatee - July 28, 2010
Time to DFA Shields?
Another Angels pitcher in tears soon?
K3YEROUT - July 28, 2010
sad but, ?
Wally's World - July 28, 2010
No that would be to easy
Plus Sosh would cry
IWishWeStillHadTimSalmon - July 28, 2010
Fuck yeah
I don’t give a shit if he cries for 3 days that POS needs to be euthanized.
blochead - July 28, 2010
wtf
everything he’s done for this team, treat him like that? if the season is over then let him go at the end, why embarrass him like that? its not like he was a FA signing like Spier.

Well...
This has been a magical season.
Good thing training camp starts this Friday.
SportsChicken - July 28, 2010
thank god derrek lee rejected that trade...
…And what the hell was the FO thinking in even inquiring about him? That tells me they were actually thinking we still have a shot at winning this year?!?! Which in turn leaves me with little faith in those who are paid to evaluate proffessional baseball players for our team. RIDICULOUS! Derrek Lee sucks!
AlohaHalofan - July 28, 2010 via mobile
this was before the Texas series this past week
if thats correct then i would have wanted him over Callaspo.
HALO_86 - July 28, 2010
This season isn't officially "dead", pending the coroner's report.
But the corpse that is the 2010 season has no heartbeat, no pulse, and no brainwaves, and no amount of de-fibrillation is going to change it. But what the hell. Keep blasting with the de-fibrillator…dead men and dead teams feel no pain.
sothball - July 28, 2010
I'm not positive
But was that a fat lady I just heard singing somewhere?
Raaddad - July 28, 2010
LOL "Pitching depth"
“The Angels later announced they added a little bit of pitching depth when they signed ex-Pirate and Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong and assigned him to Triple-A Salt Lake. Vogelsong had been pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies Triple-A team before being released July 16.
Vogelsong was 10-22 with a 5.86 ERA in six seasons in the majors."
muddybox - July 28, 2010
HAHAHAHAH what does that say about Palmer and Bell, are we that unconfident in Palmer and Bell haha
robi s - July 28, 2010
It's depressing catching myself already thinking about next season, but
then I think, "This is how the fans of most other teams feel EVERY YEAR. What is a fluke for us is a constancy for most fans (minus Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals, Twins, and maybe Dodgers fans).
Our owner is committed to winning. He already traded for Dan Haren, which was a show of good faith more than an attempt to make a push for the playoffs this year. After our dismal season in ’03, Arte went after Vlad and Colon. With a lot of money coming off the books, I have a feeling he will make a splash this off season.
Rally Manatee - July 28, 2010
we have way too many problems to fix in one off-season…. starting with our bullpen, which needs a complete make over, yet TR already screwed us by giving the ones we have mad money..
robi s - July 28, 2010
I believe the salary structure is a lot tighter this coming season then it was after ‘03. I can’t imagine the Angels will be making an epic signings (in terms of signing a good player, I could see them doing another GMJ/Kazmir/Rodney of course).
Dontbatvlad4th - July 28, 2010
lol if you voted for shields, you obviously didnt watch the game…. we were way in it until rodney loaded the bases only to have them promptly emptied….
robi s - July 28, 2010

Im watching Dan Uggla just obliterate the Giants...
Really wish we had that guy.
.282 AVG 22 HR 64 RBI’s
Yeah……

The Shields demise really bums me out
There aren’t many Angel players I’ve loved over my time as a fan, but one of them has been Shields. I won’t easily forget just how many games this guy saved for the team, but it kills me to see him go out this way.
The only thing left for me this season, is to see the minor leaguers get brought up and hopefully get an early spring training (if you will) to prove themselves. Though I am now used to Soth and know it doesn’t matter what numbers any rookie puts up this season, he’ll still go back to the aging, slow-ass, phone-it-in players at the start of next season. The guys who have CLEARLY quit (just look at Ortiz going 1st-home yesterday, that’s when I know it was officially over).
My 2011 wishes: Rivera gone (somehow), Mathis gone (somehow), Hatcher/Butcher both sent to fight it out on Battle Royale island…and then shoot the winner, Abreu DH, young legs in the outfield and Torii in LF.
….Oh, and for the love of all that is holy, get Napoli regular playing time. Let’s go Rays and Padres :D
Dontbatvlad4th - July 28, 2010
Agreed
One of Son of Raaddad’s and my favorite Halos. The dude has always been way cool to his teammates and to the fans. Our last vestige of the Glory Year is dieing the big death . . .
Raaddad - July 28, 2010
What's your take on the Vlad Guerrero resurgence...
Just asking.
Downing Rules - July 28, 2010
To be honest
I spewed my distaste for Vlad as a player on the Angels the last 2 seasons (though I loved him as a person, and gave him a standing O), I always told the Angels fans in my office that wherever he went, he would hit like he used to, and going to Arlington I am really not surprised. That’s not me backtracking for my username, that’s what I truly said and believed, I will still stand by 2 things regarding Vlad:
1. He should not have been batting 4th
2. He was no longer a good fit for the Angels (and the pressure of batting for them).
Dontbatvlad4th - July 28, 2010
Fair enough.
Downing Rules - July 29, 2010
how does Abreu get all this love???
2009=great value signing
2010=we overpaid for an old freakin veteran that looks like its over for him.
HALO_86 - July 28, 2010
Pineiro out for 6-8 weeks . . .
The hits just keep on coming . . .
Matt Palmer: C’mon down!!!!
Raaddad - July 28, 2010
we went into the season with Pitching depth
and leave the season with pitching death
