almost 2 years ago: ANAHEIM CA - JULY 27: Manager Mike Scioscia of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim looks on from the dugout during the game with the Boston Red Sox on July 27 2010 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)
Final Score in Anaheim: Boston Red Sox: 4, Angels 2
This is a game that if the Angels had played fundamental baseball (like Mike Scioscia gets props for imparting) they would have won. This team has flat out given up except for Jered Weaver. (Long rant after poll)

Hugo Chavez subject Juan Rivera couldn't find it in his abilities to run at regular speed and field a flyball. Juan Rivera couldn't run home on the contact play that Mike Scioscia has encouraged since before Rivera got here after the 2004 season. If the Angel with the most career Plate Appearances has decided to phone in his season with less than 60 games left, you can bet he is not alone.
Just look around: The most listless team of the Scioscia era cannot be coached any longer. They are playing at 3/4 speed. Howie Kendrick would win a batting title if he were only up with two outs and nobody ever on. He is so terrified of striking out on the low outside pitch that he is gutlessly concentrating on fouling off fastballs rather than swing and miss - this induces his trademark grounder to whatever part of the infield can do the most damage.
And something is brewing, because in the 7th inning, Jeff Mathis hit a gapper that was fielded quickly and the slow mo replay showed that when Jeffo turned to run back to first base, his whole career was flashing before his eyes. Why did he reveal the ashen face of fear when successfully avoiding being picked off? Because he knows the change is coming and he was flat out terrified... It would seem that a player would love to get off this lugnut-free bus before the wheels beat to the bottom of the roadside ditch, Mathis and may Angels know that their pampered status as Scioscia's chosen pets will not translate were they to get sent to another team
Hopefully, hopefully there will be many current Angels getting gelded (look up that word and pray there are not pictures on the website you find its definition) and the sooner, the better. It is apparent that the Angels front office cares, but after playing the patience game two weeks too long, the deficit is too great and this gutless bunch of lazy me-firsters don't deserve a division title, let alone the reinforcements that Tony Reagins is scouring for at this very moment.
Torii Hunter is the team leader but ask him to swing for a single with men in scoring position instead of trying to hit a glamor shot HR... he won't take no mess for a measly ribby. All or nothing is gonna get Torii to an early October tee time. His idiotic check swings on bad pitches are the mark of a guess hitter inviting the ump to give him a quick trip back to the bench.
In the locker room where the "press" gets its vaunted access you hear lies like "this team isn't quitting" and then you see more defensive miscues in a game than occurred in a week of the recent 90+win seasons, more quitting on the basepaths and more phoned-in sloppy At-Bats by every single player in the lineup.
Angels fans know a cruddy product and are staying home from the "premium" the inbred Bostonian paste invasion, assuring that the less than sellout houses are now over fifty percent full of bandwagoning aryans and their moustachioed cousin wives.
The stupid promo-every-minute-cacaphony FSN television broadcast, after years of pretending to be classy but now desperate for any life in their lowly-rated telecasts, turns on the field microphones to amplify Angels fans booing John Lackey leaving the field in the eighth inning. Now that you are desperate for the ratings you turn MMA on us after more than a decade of Steve Physioc reminding us to wash our hands before dinner.
Oakland A's fans, your team can have this division when Texas does its annual meltdown. The Angels showed tonight that the wouldn't bother sticking their gloves out for it if the AL West fell right into their path.
There is more... much more... but why bother?
UPDATE: Just saw the first inning replay on FSN and ball four of the walk to Youklis was borderline, but it was the same pitch that Torii and Howie got called strikes later in the game.

THIS IS BULLSHIT
clover_black - July 27, 2010
This season is soooo over
chairmanofthebar - July 27, 2010
I don't even care anymore.
It doesn’t have to be Mr. Gorgeous. Play Q in left field. Play Steve finley in left field. Play Mo Vaughn in left field. Play Yan in left field. Anyone but JR.
Figgi4life - July 27, 2010 via mobile
How about Alfonzo?
Clutch - July 28, 2010
More errors on the field than in this write up
and that’s saying a lot
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - July 27, 2010
typo and grammatical errors are being fixed slowly (unlike errors on the field)
no conceptual errors here
Rev Halofan - July 27, 2010
lol
vitzeng - July 27, 2010
you clean up quick, now for a scioscia esque cliche train
minimized the damage there, had a rough patch but trimmed the hedges to perfection, showed us why you lead the best and biggest angels blog, lost control of his emotions but quickly regained the reigns, etc etc.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - July 27, 2010
"and let's not forget that the season is a marathon, not a sprint"
Quad Fin Rider - July 27, 2010
Which Juan Rivera is going to win?
Top or Bottom? (I voted bottom)
jtkelly86 - July 27, 2010
I voted for bottom Rivera
This is like a psychological experiment.
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
I, too, voted for the bottom Rivera
Because the real Juan Rivera would be at the bottom of any list.
RedHatHalo - July 28, 2010
I voted for Juan Rivera
blochead - July 27, 2010
Never in all my years have I wanted to see Q playing in left.
Rivera has changed me.
This is not good
hobbit_86 - July 27, 2010
What a complete disgrace
2010 Angels are a joke. The sad thing is that I love this team so much that I’m gonna continue to watch them and allow myself to be tortured by this shitty group of players.
ryanfea - July 27, 2010
Please explain that to my wife
when I’m slumped over on the couch, and she says, “You don’t have to watch.”
Rally Manatee - July 28, 2010
we don't have to watch...
but we will. This is out team and we just keep trying to hold on to a tiny thread of hope.
angelsfan7 - July 28, 2010

That’s pretty damn small. 1×10E-18 meters to be exact.

Inception was an amazing piece of entertainment
Pretty much the opposite of this shitty team
TheKingfish - July 27, 2010
Cobb and Co.
Needs to get into the Angels’ dreams and “incept” the idea of playing better baseball.
Robviously - July 27, 2010
f this…. we are terrible this year…. Sosh seems like he needs to start making waves in the lineup punishing guys who aren’t playing Angel baseball… .they way we play these days is sickening
robi s - July 27, 2010
The vast majority of this team ...
… can drink a big glass of Fail after this game.
We may have the best 1 – 4 in either league, but WHAT THE F*&% DOES IT GET US when all the rest of the parts are scrap?
LazorkoRules - July 27, 2010
One of the most gutless Halos performances I've ever seen in all my years
And a nice message sending game to Mr Ed, we really taught that fat fuck not bad mouth his former team & its fans.

Failure in all aspect of Angels baseball. On the field and on tv.

At least in jail ill see more action than this team

maze88 - July 27, 2010 via mobile
This team sucks
Blow it up and start building an offense for 2011
TheKingfish - July 27, 2010
Why are we assuming a rangers meltdown?
They had one of the softest schedules ever which helped them build up a lead. I will give them credit since the ASB they’ve played great.
MagicMike23 - July 27, 2010
Angel talking heads need to shut the f up.
these guys need a little bruce drennan in them, and throw the entire team under the bus, on air.
clover_black - July 27, 2010
Amen!
It’s insulting when they pretend like nothing is wrong.
Rally Manatee - July 28, 2010
Quite honestly, perhaps the Angels FO anticipated this season's miserable outcome
and wanted a bunch of homers as broadcasters. God knows Hud we be talking shit (the truth) about these clowns.
Dono Romantico - July 27, 2010
Rex Hudler is the biggest cheerleader I have ever heard for any team in any sport.
Really doubt he’d be criticizing the Angels if he were still around.

Dono Romantico - July 27, 2010
Billy mac said that this just makes
The 3 game series against Texas even more meaningful.
If by more meaningful you mean less meaningful, then yes, that’s true. This season is over. If the Angels somehow prove me wrong and get into the playoffs, I won’t really care. This team is still awful.
Figgi4life - July 27, 2010 via mobile
We'll be swept at home by the Rangers
ryanfea - July 27, 2010
Billy Mac is the biggest of the ass clowns on FSW.
Maybe if we had split the 4 games with TX and won 2 of 3 against BOS, then the next series against TX would have some meaning. Now, it’s just going to be the final nail in the coffin.
Rally Manatee - July 28, 2010
But.....
He is a big fan of orange/red tans, Carls Jr. and young young ladies. Your asking a bit much from life having all that, and then demanding that he know something about baseball and be more than a weather man turned corporate sports homer.

I love when Rev. gets feisty.
I agree with everything stated above, except the part about Texas melting down the stretch. I don’t see it happening, that team is solid.
We just better hope Mark Cuban doesn’t buy them, because if he does, they’ll be good for a long, long time.
bc56274 - July 27, 2010
I want Cuban to buy them
Gives MLB a new, fun, feisty owner. And we have good competition.
Might also light a fire under the asses of the FO to play good baseball.

I've heard Cuban is a lot more underfunded than people tend to believe.
MH252525 - July 27, 2010

i am praying for Cuban to own the Rangers… let’s count the Mavs rings… hey look: ZERO. Dude does not have the dough he once had, it would be on credit default kamikaze hedge fund crystal ball derivatives. They would collapse in a year, two tops.

Mathis is a definite LVP
tolbs1010 - July 27, 2010

add the POSes that are still on the payroll, too
TheKingfish - July 27, 2010
Rev I agree with your writeup
Especially the part about Torii, I’ve missed a lot of games this year with 2 young kids, but he’s pissed me off several times swinging for the fences when the situation just doesn’t dictate it.
The one guy that has played Angels baseball this year in Frandsen they go out and get Callaspo who is essentially the same player. Frandsen doesn’t strike out, walks a bit, and will hit the occasional double.
MH252525 - July 27, 2010
Adding on to your Torii hate...
he really jogged in on a ball coming toward him (grounder) and allowed a runner to go 1st-to-3rd. Pissed me off. The guy should have been nailed if Torii had hustled.
Downing Rules - July 27, 2010

This would be my lineup for tomorrow
Aybar SS
Bobby RF
Torii CF

Naps C
Callaspo/Izzy 3B

Trumbo 1B
Bourjos LF

I'm all for this.
~MMP~ - July 27, 2010

hobbit_86 - July 27, 2010
I've been so damn bored with this team...
even when they win, like a lot of last year, it’s like watching Ishtar or The Bear…. you know that what you saw is technically called a movie (or ball game), and that most of them are at least entertaining, but not the one you just saw.
I say blow it up. I want Wood and Frandy in, battle to the death! I want Bourjos in the outfield, I want to see this Trumbo, everyone says he’s not good enough, well neither is this team. Think back, Nipples was buried behind Can’t Miss Mathis for years. Who’s the man now? Wouldn’t it be cool if he turned out to mash a few? Even guys that are flailing, let em flail here, give Reckling a taste, I don’t know if he’s injured or how he’s doing, but do you think Jordan Walden can at least look more intense and less like a cartoon mouse than Fuentes for a few September innings? Conger. Let’s see what he’s got. Hell, let Trout play fan appreciation day. I just want to see if we have any Ecksteins hidden away, or just some guys who may need some more work in AA/AAA, but are willing to step up and show some fire in their eyes while they play.
And lastly, but most important, instead of giving away a badly made American truck on Fan Day, give away Mickey Hatcher, he will mow some lucky fan’s lawn for life, and promote Jim Eppard, or Shepard Fairy, to hitting coach. Either one will be of more use to a hitter in a slump.
gitchogritchoffmypetis - July 28, 2010
I looked at this lineup
and realized it’s better than our current one. Not for the future, NOW.

3rd Echelon - July 27, 2010
2002 WS was a fluke?
clover_black - July 27, 2010
Unless you show me another WS, within the sample, then statistically... yes
3rd Echelon - July 27, 2010
power hitting and a solid bullpen are never fluke winners
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - July 27, 2010
Wow that's a stupid comment
The past 10 World Series have been won by 8 different teams. Only Boston (2004 and 2007) and New York (2000 and 2009) won more than one. So, by your logic, the Diamondbacks, Angels, Marlins, White Sox, Cardinals, and Phillies were all flukes? You don’t have to answer — that’s a rhetorical question and you are a fucking retard.
Brody - July 28, 2010
Just a wild guess, you went to a public school right?
The inferred sample was World Series championships by the LOS ANGELES ANGELS. Not the D-Backs, Marlins, White Sox, etc. You can’t construct a reliable sample with your methodology.
Take a piece of paper and plot Angels WS championships (y) per year from 1961 (x) to 2009. In 2002, you will see an “anomaly.” “Fluke” is slang for anomaly.
Maybe you should worry about all of the Yankee/Sox fans that almost outnumber Angles fans at the Big A. Big Papi hits a home run and the crowd cheers? WTF? When does that ever happen at Fenway?
3rd Echelon - July 28, 2010
They don't cheer
for Big Papi at Fenway?
Or he just doesn’t hit home runs there?
raskul - July 28, 2010
I have a really nice home theater system...
I can hear the crowds at the Big A chanting “Let’s go RedSox” (which tells me that there must be enough Sux fans to make the noise)
When I watch the Angels at Fenway I don’t hear anyone chanting “Let’s go Angels”
Why not?

red floyd - July 28, 2010
Why are Brandon Wood and Bobby Wilson still on this team?
Why do our bullpen pitchers insist on walking so many guys?
How come I have known all along that Rivera is shit, but Sosh still can’t see it?
Well I guess this is what happens when you lose the guys we did and replace them with Suck.
Wally's World - July 27, 2010
I don't think the team isn't trying
I just don’t think they’re very good. Good hitters are good hitters, good pitchers are good pitchers, good fielders are good fielders. These guys have been doing this for so long they could fall out of bed and outperform the rest of the world at baseball. So I’m just going to call a spade a spade. It isn’t because the Angels aren’t trying, it’s because they’re not a good team.
Suboptimal - July 27, 2010
I respect your acumen at quantitative baseball analysis
Nevertheless, at the risk of sounding like a fool, I strongly disagree with you in part. While I would agree that they are not a championship-caliber team, or even one with the ready ability to go far in the postseason, still they are a much better team than their performance this month would indicate—precisely because they are not trying.
I’ve been a fan of this team long enough to know what it is to root for a mediocre team, and to be aware that we have been luxuriantly spoiled as fans during this decade. I may not have a good understanding of modern performance metrics, but I think I can tell the difference between mediocre players performing to the best of their abilities and good players just phoning it in. Increasingly over the past few weeks, I have seen more of the latter and less of the former, most evidently in the outfield and on the basepath.
All evidence seems to indicate that in terms of ability, the Rangers are the real thing for once, and the Kendryless Angels not up to the task of taking the division. Nevertheless, I do believe our team is good enough to take the division should the Rangers falter. Their shoddy play of the past several weeks, sadly, have made such a happy outcome quite unlikely.
If I am wrong, and the Angels truly are this bad,, then absent wholesale changes 2011 does not promise to bring a return to the postseason, and Arte should consider a thorough re-evaluation of our scouting and player development efforts.
rspencer - July 28, 2010

and not been handed such responsibility and expectations.
well, as much responsibility and expectations one could have for a #8 or #9 hitter.
our old ass outfield has cost this team more than anything else.
two of the three are not hitting for shit, the one that was hitting has stopped in the most crucial stage of this particular season; yet still flips his bat on routing fly outs and watches strike 3 go by while flashing a just for tv smile.
Defensively, they all suck. Tori is supposed to compensate for the dog shit beside him, but he is not even league average. His arm is a joke, everyone takes an extra base on tori damon.

While he is a dick, he said it right, “scoreboard.”
While an obnoxious boo-bird myself, I would have reserved my loudest booing for the Halo offense. I’m gonna let them have it on Friday night. They are hosed. No closed door meetings needed.
Downing Rules - July 27, 2010
This.
Lackey pulled a “we fly flags” on us. Can’t say much to that. Big time douchebag, but he is a gamer, and I don’t mind not facing him again this season.
clover_black - July 27, 2010
I'm glad he won't forget it. That means it bothered him.
Lackey won’t be good forever. The day will come when he gets shelled in Anaheim.
UCIHalo - July 27, 2010
I was feeling kind of ambivalent about him before this game
but he’s totally dead to me now.
Quad Fin Rider - July 27, 2010
He made his own bed with his previous comments
He should ask Vlad why he is more revered among Angels fans than him, the Game 7 WS winner.
Think about it, John, before you run your mouth to impress your new buddies.
yeswecan - July 28, 2010
At least we have something in common with Lackey
He won’t be making the postseason either this year.
Scoreboard says Yanks, Rays>Redsox
LosAngel - July 28, 2010
Can't vote in the poll.
Juan Rivera’s sucking doesn’t even come close to the abortion of a bullpen we’ve had to suffer through all season. I think Weaver must have nailed every reliever’s mother on camera or something because they seemingly go out of their way to (saved it because I knew it would come up) FUCK up every start he has. This is an absolute joke.
Rev, there’s the big error in your rant. You seem to have overlooked the bullpen. Please adjust accordingly.

At the game dispicable..... Red sox were way louder but the boos were pretty loud for Lackey
of course I was one of those people that were booing loudly but the crowd was loud and clear and I am glad that they gave him a big loud boo! Now that that’s over the season is done with who wants to talk football!

Go Chargers!
Vladd#27 - July 28, 2010
Piniero
Is still pretty damn good. I havent given up on him yet. Actually our starting 4 as of right now are pretty good. Maybe we should just dump the DH and let these guys hit. They can’t do worse.
Zookeeper - July 27, 2010
Pinata gonna give up the candy tomorrow in the day air
he’ll have a lot of pressure on him to avoid the sweep, combined with knowing he’s only gonna get a run or two of support. He will also have to throw a complete game.
Hope his sinker has a little extra crisco on it.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - July 27, 2010
I think
Its time for a closed door meeting. Another one. A “Pull your Head outta your ass” type of meeting.
This team is not that bad. They have been worse. But why are they playing like shit? Its not over.
Its far from over.
M.Napoli For President in 2012 - July 28, 2010
I agree
only in that it’s not over yet. I disagree that it’s far from over because it’s pretty damn close to being over right now.
haloduck - July 28, 2010
The Sad Thing is
that Sosh had a closed door meeting yesterday before the game to talk about offense and on base percentage.

I just wanted to say that Throwbacks is awesome!
Tonight was me and my buddies first time going and we had a great time and the bus ride to the stadium is bad ass. Seriously though bring up bourjous and trumbo and like yesterday!
angelskid2210 - July 28, 2010 via mobile
I love the Angels franchise
But I hate the team I’m seeing right now. A bunch of swing at anything, powerless hitters who can’t run, field or throw. It may not be the sabermetric flavor of the day, but I’m perfectly happy with a group of speedy .300 hitters. I could be happy with a team that doesn’t hit for great average, but has power and gets people on with the walk like we did back in 86. But I can’t stand watching so many players who are below average hitters who don’t make up for it on defense or on the bases.
I’m looking at you, Johnny Rivers. But Howie Kendrick, Jeff Mathis, and Alberto Callaspo aren’t exactly earning their lineup spots right now either.
RallyMonkey5 - July 28, 2010
It's like I said
Go full-tilt for Crawford. Put Torii in the corner, Bourjos in center, with K-Mo back and a year of Haren, keep Naps and his whatever D at catcher in exchange for 25 solo homers, let Abreu DH most of the time. I’m fine with the rest of the infield because the rest of the lineup balances it out. That team will win the AL West in 2011. This team doesn’t deserve to the playoffs, nd right now I’d say the only thing we deserve is a third-place finish.
The good news is that last year was a stressful October. This year I can focus on getting my toddler excited for Halloween without nervously watching games every night.
This is a fluke year. We’ll be back next year. Younger, more balanced, get us a better pen and we’re unstoppable.
Kernel - July 28, 2010
Yeah
Kind of like 2006. Angels found so many infuriating ways to lose that year. Just lack of focus, like Brian Fuentes forgetting to cover first base.
RallyMonkey5 - July 28, 2010
I can't wait to see
That ouffield. If the Angels actually do that. If they don’t see that they need to vastly upgrade speed in the OF by now they are blind.
If we can get Crawford, I think the lowest he’d command is 5/75 and might command a contract that surpasses what Torii makes. I’d still love to have him, but with the Haren addition that really pushes the payroll up. Angels may need to cut corners somewhere. I’d be fine with a trade/non-tender of Kendrick. With his lack of power and walks he needs to hit .300 or better to be an asset. A .270 hitting Kendrick is useless. What does he give us that Frandsen can’t?
We could go with a Callaspo/Aybar/Frandsen infield with Maicer playing all 3 spots and getting equal playing time to the others. By 2012 Amarista will probably be our 2B.
Another place to cut corners is letting Mathis go and having Wilson as the backup catcher. If only to keep Scioscia from running him out there every day. Finally, let Fuentes go and don’t worry about signing bullpen help. Our cheap homegrown guys (Jepsen/K-Rod II/Thompson) are no worse than our expensive guys.
RallyMonkey5 - July 28, 2010
As long as Scioscia has input with Reagins, Mathis is going nowhere
Unfortunately.
Clutch - July 28, 2010
Reagins
is still the boss. I know Scioscia has input (probably more than any other manager) but ultimately the guy in charge of payroll has to look at this catcher who can’t hit or field and realize it’s a huge waste of resources to give him $1 million plus again in 2011.
dmhead - July 28, 2010
Done. Season over. The end. Next.
Please surprise me, Halos.
Clutch - July 28, 2010
I'm not giving up yet...
There is still a lot of baseball left. I’m not betting on a Texas meltdown – we need to start winning games just like Sosh says. It’s on us we can’t expect other teams to lose.
Anyway – I just can’t give up yet – it’s close and I’m NOT happy about how this team is playing, but I’m not there yet.
angelsfan7 - July 28, 2010
Ok it looks bad...
but I am not ready to give up yet. There is still a lot of baseball to be played. Bobby looked like his old self last night (he is 3 for 8 in this series with 2 homeruns, a double and 3 rbi’s) now if the rest of the team can follow him and get something good. Like I said it looks grim but the fat lady ain’t sung yet!
kbrown2225 - July 28, 2010
Still a Fan, just not of this season...
It isn’t like my love for the team is gone, I just don’t care anymore about this season. I am not going to be unrealistic. If you have no bullpen, and you can’t score runs, you aren’t going to win. Period.
Some big changes nee to be made.
AP2TUDE - July 28, 2010
Yep.
And hopefully no panic moves a la the last bad season we had, in 2006—which produced Gary Matthews, Jr.
If this were Stoneman still running the FO, I would totally expect a multi-year DeJesus signing in the offing…

Downing Rules - July 29, 2010
Sorry Angels, but my signature line says it all. If you don't give me something exciting to watch, I'm not going to.
Halo84653 - July 28, 2010
I am not even a fair weather fan
I am still going to be a fan. I will still watch the games. But now I am much more resigned to not care as much about their outcome, because it basically doesn’t matter.
I can watch for my favorite players, and to hope that I catch a night when we win, but the underlying hope that the nights performance will lead to something more this season is gone now.
AP2TUDE - July 28, 2010
This ^^^
Sort of.
I was a casual fan until about 2000, then I started to really become rabid.
You know, if the Angels were flat out SUCK, like the M’s, it wouldn’t be as bad. It’s the mediocrity that kill me.
red floyd - July 28, 2010
Ah, mediocrity.
Eff it.
Clutch - July 28, 2010
Not Bad, Not Good
At least if that were terrible, it would be easier. You wouldn’t have a lot of hope to really begin with, so when you win it feels good, and when you lose it is par for the course, so it isn’t heartbreaking.
But we aren’t bad. We aren’t good either. We are stuck in that in between area right now where we see flashes of how good that we can be. Like how we were able to produce runs and play a great game in our first win against the Rangers last series. We put it together and made it happen.
Seeing stuff like that shows that we have it in us, which is why our apathetic performance is that much more frustrating.
AP2TUDE - July 28, 2010
Gene Mauch had the best grip on all of this...
“The worst thing is the day you realize you want to win more than the players do.”
“There should be a new way to record standings in this league, one column for wins, one for losses, and one for gifts.”
“You have to bear in mind that Mr. Autry’s favorite horse was named Champion. He ain’t ever had one called Runner Up.”
