Red Sox-Angels Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
Lackey doesn't anticipate boos, but he knows the Angels crowd will be behind Jered Weaver (9-6, 3.22 ERA), who replaced Lackey as the Angels' ace this season. ''(Leaving the Angels) was just one of those things, and that's the way the game is these days,'' Lackey said. ''There were only a certain amount of places that I would have considered leaving for, and this was one of them. It's been great. It's been a really easy transition. The guys in the clubhouse have made it easy. It's a good group of guys, so it was easy to fit in.'' Lackey is 9-5 with a 4.36 ERA with the Red Sox, starting slowly but rounding into form. He has been durable after arm strains affected his past two seasons with Los Angeles, pitching into the seventh inning 14 times in 20 starts for Boston.
Boo? Why would anyone boo John Lackey?? In fact, I heard it's "John Lackey Night" at the stadium. Anyone who comes dressed as a jockey gets in free.

Dan Haren's debut is a hit, but not the kind the Angels had in mind - latimes.com
Haren was diagnosed as having a bruise on his forearm and is scheduled to be reexamined Tuesday by Dr. Lewis Yocum, the Angels' team orthopedist. "It hurt, but I didn't feel it hit any bone," Haren said, adding that he hoped to throw off a mound Wednesday to test the arm and make his next start as scheduled Saturday. "That was the good thing. "Ortiz hit a solo homer against Haren in the third inning and a towering two-run shot off reliever Fernando Rodney in the eighth, sending the Angels to their fifth defeat in six games. They fell into a virtual tie with Oakland for second place in the American League West, a season-high 7½ games behind Texas — and nine back of the Rangers in the loss column. Hideki Matsui tried to revive a slumbering offense with a two-run homer off Boston reliever Scott Atchison in the eighth, but it wasn't enough on a night when the Angels failed to score after loading the bases with no outs in the second inning and were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.
I didn't get to see the game (frickin' work always ruins everything), but when looking at the boxscore, if Rodney and Kohn hadn't given up those four runs, the Angels woulda/coulda won this game? Welcome to Anaheim Mr. Haren. Anyway, have a highlight or two: Abreu gives the Angels an early lead - Bobby Abreu smashes a solo blast to right-center field to put the Angels ahead 1-0 in the first inning, Matsui's homer is reviewed by umps, upheld - Hideki Matsui hits a home run to right-center that is reviewed by the umpiring crew, and upheld, Haren is hit by comebacker, leaves the game - Dan Haren exits his Angels' debut in the fifth inning after being hit in his right forearm by a line drive from Kevin Youkilis, Haren strikes out eight, leaves debut early - Dan Haren strikes out eight over 4 2/3 innings of work, then leaves the game after being hit by Kevin Youkilis' comebacker

National writer: Angels' trade for Haren 'reeks of desperation' - Dallas Morning News
Reaction to the trade is starting to come in from writers around the country. So far, several reviews don't seem to be very favorable for the Angels. Chris Ruddick of Canada's The Sports Network writes that he doesn't understand how the trade improves the Angels' pitching.
Hey look! The Dallas Morning News finally found someone who doesn't think the Angels made a good deal for Haren! Too bad Defsiuohgf Moslkhget of the Iran News service was too busy to comment on this deal, or else the DMN would have had two people who thought it was a bad deal for the Halos.

Bench him: Figgins in need of a slip on the wrist, or more - Seattlepi.com
I hope when Figgins opens his mouth again and is ready to talk, he'll apologize to Wakamatsu and his teammates for his outburst last Friday. But we all know that will never happen. When the Mariners played in Anaheim earlier this month, I'll bet Figgins told his former teammates that he wished he'd never signed with Seattle and was still playing for the Angels. Hey, Chone, most Mariner fans feel that way too.
This really surprises me. I had never heard anything negative about Figgins while he was in Anaheim. (By the way, what's a "slip on the wrist"?
Coghlan goes on DL after celebration injury | MLB.com: News
Excessive celebration after a dramatic walk-off win has proven costly for the Marlins."When Wes hit the walk-off, I went to pie him in the face," Coghlan said. "When I jumped, I landed wrong on my knee. That's how I got injured."

Angels are willing to take the risks for the ultimate reward - latimes.com
In his eight years as the Angels' general manager, Bill Stoneman's most notable July import was reserve outfielder Alex Ochoa. His successor, Tony Reagins, imported Mark Teixeira two years ago, Kazmir last year and Haren this year. In his eight years, Stoneman traded five minor league pitchers. Reagins just traded five minor league pitchers within four days, for Haren and infielder Alberto Callaspo.

Explaining Red Sox's ratings plummet - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN
One fairly surprising note from the piece: the Angels of Anaheim have the second-worst share in the majors, just a hair ahead of the A's. And it's not because of the standing; the Angels' ratings are actually up nearly 12 percent from last year. There might simply be some measurement issues here.
Some typical Neyer/LAAoA shenanigans here.

Angels " Win Probability " Monday, July 26, 2010 - FanGraphs Baseball
July 27 - BR Bullpen
1970 - The Yankees beat California, 5 - 2, behind Mel Stottlemyre, who is helped by Gene Michael in the 9th. With the score tied, Michael pulls the hidden ball trick on Angel pinch runner Jarvis Tatum. The Yanks score three in the 10th to win.
1982 - Against California, Oakland's Rickey Henderson steals his 95th base but gets caught stealing three times in an 8 - 7, 13-inning California win. Not since 1916 has an American Leaguer been thrown out three times in a game. Rickey will be thrown out 42 times this year, breaking the mark of 38 caught stealings set by Ty Cobb in 1915. Bob Boone, who is behind the plate, homers for the Angels. Reggie Jackson and Brian Downing also homer and Jackson adds two doubles. Boone. Bob Boone. Bitch.
1995 - The White Sox trade pitchers Jim Abbott and Tim Fortugno to the Angels in exchange for minor league outfielder McKay Christensen and pitchers Andrew Lorraine, Bill Simas and John Snyder.
1999 - The Angels' 11-game losing streak ends as they defeat the Devil Rays, 10 - 5.
2002 - The Mariners defeat the Angels, 3 - 1, ending Jarrod Washburn's 12-game winning streak, the longest in the majors this season. Hey! We're all going streaking!
Happy b-day:
1880 - Irish McIlveen, outfielder (d. 1960) I think he was from Spain.
1975 - Alex Rodriguez, infielder; All-Star Last year he had Kate Hudson popping out of a cake. The year before it was Madonna. I hear this year it's Jeter.

What is it about Third Base this year.
I know it’s only 4 games, but so far Callaspo has been WORSE than Wood in OPS.
When does Longoria become a FA???? Also just give Cowart his 3 million and anyone else that has a chance to OPS more than 400 from the hot corner……
MH252525 - July 27, 2010
It’s been 4 games
B-Wood had about 30 more. So Callaspo could be in a slump while B-Wood has been consistently bad.
phoenix15 - July 27, 2010
yea I know
it’s just we have gotten ZERO production from anyone at 3rd this year
MH252525 - July 27, 2010
Zero Production??
Frandsen at 3B: .272 /.326/.662, 9 RBI’s and 9 BB’s in 125 AB’s.
I don’t know if I’d necessarily call that zero production.
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
Frandsen has a .662 SLG without hitting a homerun? I find that unlikely. I’m guess you mean .362, and that line is still pretty terrible.
Gorbachav5 - July 27, 2010
I'm guessing .662 is his OPS
hk47 - July 27, 2010
It's actually .706.
So who knows what the hell Rex was talking about.
halofan4life - July 27, 2010
I rarely know what I'm talking about actually
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
It's hard to without your stash
turs12 - July 27, 2010
.662 is his OPS not slugging. My bad
Nevertheless, I don’t think it was fair to call Frandsen a zero production player considering what we have to work with. Choose your poison.
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
"Yeah, but still" is also my favorite defense when I'm called out for being wrong.
snowhor - July 27, 2010 via mobile
Who said I was wrong?
Am I still believe Frandsen contributed zero to the offense while playing 3B?
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
Well, I guess you could say that .662 is right above zero in the category called pisspoor.
Stick to your guns.
snowhor - July 27, 2010 via mobile
Well when you add in his stats at 1B it shoots up to .702
Let’s not sell him short
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
AL average is .742, putting frandsen just 40 pts out.
If this is a zero piss poor player than I concede defeat.
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
yea 662 is still pretty bad...
is it better than Wood and Callaspo’s 4 games…. of course…. but it’s still craptastic
MH252525 - July 27, 2010
And he was falling back to earth pretty rapidly...
LAASurfin - July 27, 2010
No, he's not a zero
But he hasn’t done much in the way of hitting for power or walking. 3B is kind of a wasteland right now.
Frandsen’s been the best of the bunch, though.
Gorbachav5 - July 27, 2010
I knew I was right :)
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
.215 / .258 / .311
That’s what the Angels have got from third base, along with 6 HR and 38 RBI. That’s not even zero production, it’s negative production. Worse than replacement level. Most of it is Wood’s fault, but Frandsen’s total lack of power doesn’t help either. Maicer Izturis actually has about half the homers and RBIs with only about 25% of the PAs at third.
Suboptimal - July 27, 2010
I was defending Frandsen individually
I can’t speak for the rest of our 3B platoon.
Those are pretty dismal numbers though.
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
Versatility.
The ability to rotate several league-average 3rd basemen for matchup reasons, in Sosh’s mind, will equal 1 dominant 3rd basemen. Sort of like transformers.
clover_black - July 27, 2010
Doesn’t do that much
when your 3rd baseman strikes out on 3 pitches every AB.
phoenix15 - July 27, 2010
and has 3 HRs to show for it
phoenix15 - July 27, 2010
clover's comment
was sarcasm. If you didn’t catch that.
hk47 - July 27, 2010
Oh man
Could you imagine if Wood, Izturis, Quinlan, Frandsen, and Callaspo combined to form one giant 3B? I think Wood would be the left leg, Frandsen the right, Callaspo and Quinlan the arms with Izturis as the head (he’d get hurt if he was anywhere else).
This could be the way to go.
Gorbachav5 - July 27, 2010
You know Soth would make Q be the face.
You know, for handsomeness. Soth would just gaze into our multi-3Bman’s eyes all game and hopefully distract him enough to forget bringing FRodney into the game when he planned.
snowhor - July 27, 2010 via mobile
Well I'm sure if that's the case
Reagins could replace Weavers 14 of so wins he’ll likely get this year with two 7 game winners.
MH252525 - July 27, 2010
indeed.
pull a buzzie bavasi… reagins is learning from the best.
clover_black - July 27, 2010
Hmmm. . .
It must be a phenomenon similar to lamination.
So I guess we should be calling him Brandon Plywood.
rspencer - July 27, 2010
We need to sign more players from our 2010 draft.
The recent loss of 5 prospects and the slow start by many of current 2010 draftees puts extra pressure on our front office to sign more of our 2010 picks.
Especially Cowart. We knew he was asking for 3 Mil before we drafted him. Lets just get it done and get him to Arizona.
Trott - July 27, 2010
That's why we need Naps to play 3B next year.
Rally Manatee - July 27, 2010
oh hell no
He’ll probably have less range than Glaus.
phoenix15 - July 27, 2010
Why does everyone keep saying that?
Are you watching him at 1B? He’s shown better range than Morales. Everyone just assumes that since he’s a bit bulky, he won’t have range. How about Pablo Sandoval? Kevin Youkilis was a third baseman. Besides, catchers move side to side very well. And with Aybar at SS, our 3B doesn’t even need as much range.
Rally Manatee - July 27, 2010
Have you seen him throw from home to 2nd?
Imagine the throws from 3rd to 1st. Loadsa balls flying over Kendrys head or bouncing 3 feet in front of him
Epic Dean - July 27, 2010
Throwing 3B to 1B is easier than throwing out a base stealer at 2B
Let’s put it this way, on an official sized infield, I can throw a runner out at 1st from 3rd. (I still play hardball pick-up games every Sunday in the summer.) But I cannot throw out a base stealer.
Base stealers get huge jumps while the catcher has to throw from his knees or a crouch, wearing a bunch of gear, with a batter in the way. That’s what makes it difficult to throw accurately every time. Plus, throwing a base runner out requires placing the ball precisely to the right of the bag, low to the ground, to apply the tag. When you throw to 1B, you can throw a little high, low, left, or right, and still easily get the runner because the first baseman doesn’t have to tag the runner, and he can stretch out, only needing to keep his foot on the bag for a moment. All of third baseman needs to do be able to do is throw HARD within about a 10 foot radius of first base.
Rally Manatee - July 27, 2010
the difference is
that the catcher is getting the ball thrown right to him, while a 3rd baseman has to field the ball prior to throwing to 1st. can Napoli field a hard hit ball down the line, then get up and make a decent throw to 1st? and if so, can he do it consistently??? I doubt it, but would love for him to prove me wrong. he’s done very well at first with his fielding, but we haven’t seen him have to make any throws on the run, like a 3rd baseman does.
not trying to argue with you, just saying there’s more to it than what you posted. throwing the ball within 10 feet of 1st is only half the battle, fielding it is the other half. and doing them both well consistently I think Nap would have trouble with.
2pintsofbooze - July 27, 2010
You may be right, but
Epic Dean was just talking about throwing, so that’s what I responded to.
Rally Manatee - July 27, 2010
roger that
2pintsofbooze - July 27, 2010
Kendry Morales is very good at first base
The plays that Napoli dives for, Kendry stays on his feet. Napoli has been decent there, but I’m not sure he could handle third.
Gorbachav5 - July 27, 2010
Only 1 way to find out.
I’m not saying give him the starting job on opening day 2011. I’m just saying they should consider letting him word out at 3rd in the Spring. He can’t be any slower than the guys I already mentioned.
I think people are over emphasizing the importance of range at 3B. Range is more important at SS and 2B. In fact, in most cases, if the ball is hit far to the left of the third baseman, it’s better to let the shortstop get it.
The toughest job for 3B is to react. As a catcher, Napoli should have no problem reacting super fast. It’s also tough to charge dribblers on the grass. That would be where Naps might be the most limited.
Rally Manatee - July 27, 2010
You need a third option in the poll.
halofan4life - July 27, 2010

some fast OF whose good at defense to replace Rivera or Abreu?
phoenix15 - July 27, 2010
We'll probably wait until the off-season...
I don’t see us making anymore moves, who knows though! We have a logjam at catcher and third-base AND in the outfield, so its very very possible.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - July 27, 2010
This team fucking blows
Let’s face it, Dan Haren isn’t going to get us to the playoffs this year when the stupid offense can’t do anything with bases loaded and no outs
Texas is going to win the division. Shit, let them. Maybe they can actually do something in the playoffs unlike this group of choke artists
Higz - July 27, 2010
I hope your not just realizing this now, Higz...
The season is pretty much lost. It would be quit an incredible comeback if we took this division. However, we have Haren under contract for another two years after 2010. UNLIKE the Rangers who will almost definitely lose Lee in the off-season.
By the looks of it, Reagins isn’t interested in “rentals” anymore but options that can help in he short and long-term.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - July 27, 2010
Exactly right
Teixeira was the anomaly, mostly because he was Teixeira. We think of him now as a pantywaist but the boy can play and hit very well when he was with us. Arte thought we had a valid chance to sign him in the offseason, and we all know how that turned out.
But otherwise, Reagins is interested only in players who are under team control for a couple more seasons, so the other parts of the puzzle can be forecasted (to mix a metaphor like Bond’s martini).
That is why the current internet rumor of a 3-way trade with Astros and Phillies, sending Oswalt to Philadelphia and Werth to Anaheim doesn’t add up; Werth is a FA and aside from two draft picks, the Angels would have to give up more mature players in any calculation of a deal.
George Kaplan - July 27, 2010
The Teixiera trade was shrewd move with long term benefits.
The worst case scenario for it was trading Kotchman for two first round draft picks.
snowhor - July 27, 2010 via mobile
Now, if only we would make it a common practice to sign those draftpicks...
snowhor - July 27, 2010 via mobile
Who else hasn't signed recently?
Seems to me that the Angels have had pretty good success at signing their picks. Negotiations for the 2010 draft are still far from over.
Last year, the Angels’ compensation picks for Mark Texeira were Mike Trout and Tyler Skaggs. One of them is quickly becoming the top outfield prospect in all of baseball, and the other was turned into Dan Haren. That wouldn’t be a bad first round in itself, but they signed three other promising guys as well.
Suboptimal - July 27, 2010
They haven't signed a couple guys
http://www.baseballamerica.com/draftdb/2010xteam.php?team=1000
MH252525 - July 27, 2010
Didn't mean them specifically - my point before was that the Texiera trade was a good long term trade, not just a rental.
As for the we need sign those picks, I should have said our picks in general. Just a general statement not to be cheap in the draft. Didn’t we no sign someone last year also?
snowhor - July 27, 2010 via mobile
Some players don't want to sign
especially if they’re drafted in later rounds and feel they can improve their stock by playing in college or JuCo
Epic Dean - July 27, 2010
Didn't Teixeira = Mike Trout?
Looks like that worked out pretty well.
George Kaplan - July 27, 2010

Balls and Strikes - July 27, 2010
This is true.
I saw Tony Reagins at Barns & Noble the other day, reading GM For Dummies. Peeping over his shoulder, he was reading about the benefits of fielding a team strictly comprised of 3rd basemen and catchers. 2011 should be a fantastic year.
Also, I’m glad he’s learning the pro’s and cons of rental vs. contracted player through work experience. He’s all growns up!
clover_black - July 27, 2010
The weekend series clinched it for me
And the offense will probably still suck next year
Higz - July 27, 2010
nah
Kendry will be back. and with Matsui gone hopefully Abroo will be DH with Bourjes bringing some speed and defense to this team. IMO the lack of speed on the basepaths has really hurt this team, and allowed opposing pitchers to be way to comfortable out there.
don’t get me wrong, the offense will not be the ‘09 offense, but I don’t think it will be as bad as this season.
2pintsofbooze - July 27, 2010
I agree! This team sucks!
I long for the good old days of the 1990s;
A time when there were no expectations and the Angels fully obliged and met those lofty standards.
A time when the Angels were perfect in the playoffs; no chokes, no meltdowns, no disappointments.
A time when ownership and the front office were masterful at blending incompetence and ineptness on a consistent basis, year-after-year.
A time when October baseball was completely stress free.
XYZ123 - July 27, 2010
hardy-har-har
I’m glad you’re content with the failings of the current team in light of their historic suckitude. Whatever gets you thru this wasted season. I’d rather bitch about the present, and I’ve already bitched more than once this morning so I’ll be quiet now and let the optimists talk about rainbows and unicorns
Higz - July 27, 2010
Haren alone won't get us to the playoffs this year,
but he gives us a better rotation for the next 2-3 years.
Rally Manatee - July 27, 2010
Look, what Lackey did for the franchise was wonderful
He was a great competitor and a very nice pitcher.
But, he pitches for the Red Sux now. He left for more money and he said some unflattering things about the Angels after he left. With that said, if I was there tonight, I’d boo him. Dang right I would.
hk47 - July 27, 2010
Booing him would show him that we DO care.
not only about what he does on the field, but also what he says about us in the press.
halofan4life - July 27, 2010
we do care.
this is all we ever talk about.
clover_black - July 27, 2010

Also, that we aren’t paying his albatross of a contract.

I’m just saying I’d boo him.
Although, with LAA fans being rather boorish…perhaps the silent treatment would be even more effective.

I was agreeing with the idea of booing him.
halofan4life - July 27, 2010

That’s why we’re on the internet, posting about a baseball team and voting in polls about a man who looks not unlike a horse.

I really do not understand why one would want to boo him. The Angels (thankfully) did not offer the years or the money that Boston did. He is a LT liability for the Sux so I am pleased they got him and we didn’t.

Supposed to still pitch Saturday
Raaddad - July 27, 2010
Thanks
Is it the year of the pitcher or the year of the pitcher getting hit by a liner?
GayForFeliz - July 27, 2010 via mobile
I wouldn't boo Lackey
I would boo most of our current position players, and the entire bullpen.
Probably punch arte right in his wallet, and then take the puppet reigns from Scioscia just so I could make Reagins do the cabbage patch.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - July 27, 2010
I don't understand
Why so many sports experts still find it ridiculous that the Angels are trying to brand themselves as a Los Angeles team. I mean, the Jets and the Giants don’t even play in the right goddamn state. I always tell people who aren’t from Southern California that I’m from LA, because no one else in the rest of the country can appreciate the distinctions between LA, Orange, Ventura, San Bernadino and RIverside counties. Why should Rob Neyer?
Suboptimal - July 27, 2010
I hear you
I had this same discussion (for the 1000th time) with guys at the hospital in Encinitas last week(as they were poking me with needles, etc.). And, once again, when I brought up the Jets and the Patriots, they go: “oh yeah…”
It’s always the same thing, and I just don’t see why it’s such a big deal.
Just another reason to poke fun at us I guess.
Raaddad - July 27, 2010
how are you doing, by the way?
my BF had a cellulitis scare last week.
cath619 - July 28, 2010
I'm doing better thanks
Antibiotics cleared away most of the infected areas on my leg.
Of course I had to go and overdue it yesterday swimming so I’m back to the leg propped up for a couple of days.
I never learn . . .
Was it boyfriend of Cath’s leg as well?
Raaddad - July 28, 2010
It was, in fact
after a weird bug bite/sting on his ankle. It went down with ice, atarax, prednisone and rest.
He never got sick in more than 20 years of surfing in (mostly Southern) California, then moves back to where he was born and gets all sorts of weird problems via bugs. Sure, we live in the Lyme disease capital of the US, but seriously? Ticks are a bit much to deal with. Give me Hep B anytime (not really).
cath619 - July 28, 2010
You know I lived in Connecticut for 18 years--grew up there
I just don’t remember this whole tick thing as a problem back then. I understand it’s gotten a lot worse “lately.” We were always inundated with mosquitos, but maybe because I always lived near the shore we didn’t have a lot of ticks.
Do you guys ever go to Jones beach in Jersey to get some waves? That’s where we used to go when I was a kid and where I began my intense love of the ocean and of getting in the surf anyway I can (which I will hopefully be back to by friday :)
Raaddad - July 28, 2010
I don't think Neyer finds the intent ridiculous
I think he finds the execution ridiculous (having two different city names) and the outcome to have been relatively ineffective. That being said, I don’t think this particular area is Neyer’s forte, so maybe he should pipe down about it.
Gorbachav5 - July 27, 2010
The outcome isn't ineffective....
the share aren’t as important as signing a 10 year zillion dollar TV contract with FOX. If we’re the Anaheim Angels that’s not even on the table.
Nashdiesel - July 27, 2010
But the ratings share will be important if we hope to renew that zillion dollar deal.

Arte may have fsweet-talked Fox once with promises of increased exposure due to the L.A. moniker, but he won’t do it again if ratings don’t improve.
Gorbachav5 - July 27, 2010
according to Neyer
the ratings are up 12% over last season. and this has been with the team mostly struggling. if the ratings can go up in a down year, then maybe they’ll continue going up, especially when the halos win the world series next year.

he correctly took the most money someone would pay him. He is now a detriment to Boston’s payroll for the next 5 years. We wisely chose the superior Pineiro at a fraction of the cost.

What I find interesting is how differently Lackey and Vlad are treated by fans.
They both left under the same circumstances (free agency), but Lackey is hated and Vlad is still loved.
Why is that?
WiHaloFan - July 27, 2010
Because when Vlad left...
….very few of us wanted him to and I suspect neither did he
And when that duplicitous ill-mannered equine turd left, he slammed the door on the way out. You never slam the door when you leave.
The Limey - July 27, 2010
John Lackey
May the door hit yah where the good Lord split yah.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
hk47 - July 27, 2010
The attitude they had when they left. Vlad had nothing but positive things to say about the Angels after he left, while Lackey made comments that were percieved as badmouthing the organization.
~MMP~ - July 27, 2010
nailed it
FA is part of baseball now. Unless you’re Tim Salmon, you’re probably not gonna play for the Angels until you retire.

red floyd - July 27, 2010
This...
…plus Lackey had a bitchy attitude. When an error was made behind him, you could read his lips cussing and swearing over the error. Part of this was competitive, part seemed pure whiny-ass baby.
The whiny-ass baby part was also reflected in his attitude, “…there’s plenty of money if they want to keep me here.” How the hell does he know that?
I hope he gets a flea infestation of the private region. Arrogant prick.
sothball - July 27, 2010
Cuz Vlad stole hearts with his smile ..
And it seems as if vlad seemed more thankful for his time here, unlike lackey who had that stupid smile when he signed w/the sux. Seemed like he wanted out

Racism
We like brown people and hate whites. Wait, what did Jeff Miller say Angel fans felt about Frankie Rodriguez?
Downing Rules - July 27, 2010
Imposter!
red floyd - July 27, 2010
Part of it is just the fact
That Angel fans hate the Red Sox more than any team in the league. Even though Texas is a division rival, the heat against the Red Sux is much stronger mostly because of the post season history.
ryanfea - July 27, 2010
Not sure - if he'd joined another team and said the things he did...
…I’d still be booing him.
Sadly he won’t hear me from here tonight, but trust me I will still be booing.
The Limey - July 27, 2010
It's not the team he went to with me, either
I too would boo him irrespective of the team he played for because of his crappy attitude and his bad-mouthing. The fact that he went to the Red Sox merely serves to intensify my Kohntempt for him.
rspencer - July 27, 2010
I wonder
how we would feel about Vladdy if he had signed with the BoSox. assuming the situations were the same, the Halos not wanting to meet Vlad’s years/salary and Vladdy sitting in free agency for a while, then instead of Vlad getting picked up by Texas, he gets picked up by the Sox. how would we feel about him then?? I’m guessing we’d feel almost the same way as we do now.
I think the difference is attitude. Vladdy was a quiet free-swinger with a big smile and an MVP. Lackey was a douchebag hot head who couldn’t (still can’t) close his mouth…and not a Cy Young winner.
2pintsofbooze - July 27, 2010
the BoSox
want more aging, slow DHs? I don’t care which team picked Vlad up, but unlike Lackey, Vlad didn’t talk shit about the organization. He had nothing but good to say about the Halos.
phoenix15 - July 27, 2010
I'm not saying the Sox want him
I was saying that I wondered what the reaction would be if Vlad signed there. it was a hypothetical, I wasn’t claiming that they were making a run at him.
and I also think that even if Lackey didn’t say anything bad about the organization he would still get mostly booed by Halo fans, simply for going to the Sox.
2pintsofbooze - July 27, 2010
It's not just how they left, but how they played.
Lackey started badmouthing coaches and teammates more and more every year. Vlad brought his mom to So Cal to feed the team red beans and rice. Does that answer your question?
Rally Manatee - July 27, 2010
Hmmm...
This organization casted Vlad aside like a piece of trash. Future HOFer unable to get a meager contract. Vlad WANTED to come back.
The FO wanted Lackey to return, but Big John cashed in a Big Payday in the douchiest city in america.
clover_black - July 27, 2010
Vlad didnt want to come back for a "meager contract"
you’re outta your mind.
norcaliangelsfan - July 27, 2010
5.5 mil with texas, 2011 option
Hideki matsui, 6 mil.
You pay your future hall of famer.
clover_black - July 27, 2010
He signed that deal well after Matsui signed his
The Angels offered him something in that range and Vlad turned it down, not realizing that the market was so bad for aging DH’s.
Norcaliangelsfan is right – Vlad didn’t WANT to come back for a meager contract. The only reason he took one is because that was all that was available. The Angels had to make sure they got someone, so they signed Matsui. If they’d known that Vlad’s asking price would drop, I’d bet they would have waited.
Gorbachav5 - July 27, 2010
Ah, you're right.
Still, vlad is awesome. And fuck hideki matsui.
The end.
clover_black - July 27, 2010
Did they offer something? It's always been unclear to me if we ever did.
snowhor - July 27, 2010 via mobile
They didnt offer Arb to Vlad.....
however rumor was (that I heard, and now I cant find the source) was the Angels offered him a one year deal like they offer Matsui but he didnt want to take it, he wanted more. So then the Halos offered Matsui similar money and he took it.
norcaliangelsfan - July 27, 2010
More to the point
Vlad’s agent told the media (and, presumably, the Angels’ front office) that Vlad was healed from his surgery on his knees and wanted to be a “complete” player getting mostly starts in RF, not a full-time DH.
The Angels apparently weren’t going to promise more than once a week in the field, and otherwise were going to pencil him in at DH. That made sense, as the Angels had first-hand reason to think that Guerrero needed to keep off those knees as much as possible, and sitting in the dugout as DH is a great way to make that happen.
Now that he signed with the Rangers, he’s earning approximately what the Angels offered for 2010 and is playing RF about once a week. The only significant contractual difference is the mutual option for 2011.
I remain convinced that if Vlad’s team had done less posturing, we’d have him in the lineup today.
George Kaplan - July 27, 2010
Thank you
For laying this argument out so well. I’ve tried to make this point several times recently in these pages, to no apparent good effect.
If Vlad had really wanted to stay with the Angels, he’d almost certainly still be here.
rspencer - July 28, 2010
It's perfectly understandable
I know that just about everyone here loves Vlad as a player and a man, and is (on some level) pleased to see him thrive. On the other hand, it hurts to see his success contribute to the ability of the Rangers to surpass the Angels.
That said, lobbing scuds at the Angel front office because they didn’t re-sign Guerrero is just revisionist history. Vlad made about $83M (including performance bonuses) in his 6 years in Anaheim. This couldn’t have been haggling over $1M in a new contract. His advisors positioned him to be the starting RF on whatever team he was to sign with.
Significantly, no team bit on that demand, and only the Rangers came calling in the end. The Rangers also offered an option for 2011; the Angels might have offered that as well, had he been open to the DH roll full time months earlier.
George Kaplan - July 28, 2010
Yes. This.
Thank you.

Well then he'll fit right in

Raaddad - July 27, 2010
at least
he as the chance of legging out an infield single. who on this team can do that now? Aybar and…I guess Abroo. it’d be better than watching 3 consecutive batters pop out with bases loaded, no outs.
2pintsofbooze - July 27, 2010
Actually
I remember Kendry and Matsui legging out a infield single in April. Ball took a tricky bounce or bounced really high in the air.
phoenix15 - July 27, 2010
Bourjes would've turned those into triples
2pintsofbooze - July 27, 2010
I'd take a hard hit line drive (which Bourjos has been doing lately)
over the piss poor pop ups from the other guys on the team.
norcaliangelsfan - July 27, 2010
Shut up about Bourjos
You can’t hate a player who hasn’t played a game in Anaheim yet. Seriously, shut up. It’s getting old. Why don’t you hate a player who sucks? We have a few of those.
hk47 - July 27, 2010
who said I was hating?
I didn’t trust K-Rod when he 1st came up here, did that mean I hated him? I said I don’t TRUST him, not I hate him. In fact, until he comes up to the MLB and performs I won’t trust him. Everyone seemed to think B-Wood was going to get a HR title in 2010, where that go to?
phoenix15 - July 27, 2010
Every thread I click on you're saying something disparaging about Bourjos
He’s tearing up AAA right now. He’s showing power, which you have claimed he has none of. And defensively, he’d be our best OF’er if he was up right now.
hk47 - July 27, 2010
So, from here on out, any prospect the Angels bring up that flashes minor league power will follow exactly Brandon Wood’s career path. Cool. ;)
Downing Rules - July 27, 2010

norcaliangelsfan - July 27, 2010
Yikes, I thought he was better for some reason
He looked promising at times last season. 10th in the AL in WPA.
RexTookMyStash - July 27, 2010
He was pretty good last year....
but if you look at his career……he’s more along the lines of what he’s doing this year…..a tad bit better.
He’s really only had last season as anything considered to be above average/good.
norcaliangelsfan - July 27, 2010
Nope
Since the M’s made a pact with TX to try to keep the Angels from winning at all costs, I don’t think they’ll be willing to deal with us. They are the axis of evil.
Rally Manatee - July 27, 2010
MLB can't have Matsui and Ichiro on the same team
it would cut out a lot of the Japanese advertising dollars having their 2 biggest stars on 1 team.
although perhaps Ichiro could remind Torii how to steal HRs again
2pintsofbooze - July 27, 2010
Torii seems to be struggling with his steal rates as well.
