Angels lose to Rangers, 6-4 - latimes.com
The Angels' Trevor Bell (1-2), making his first major league start since August, allowed 10 of the 18 batters he faced in 3 1/3 innings to reach base, with two of the outs he recorded coming on the basepaths after he gave up a hit. Nevertheless, there was late drama after Hideki Matsui hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning and the Angels brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning against closer Neftali Feliz. Hunter and Matsui opened the inning with singles to put runners on first and third with none out. Alberto Callaspo drove in a run with a fielder's choice, but Feliz retired the next two batters to record his 28th save. "Three out of four, they did what they had to do," Hunter said. "They did their thing. We came to their house and they held it down.

The Angels suffered the second-worst of outcome scenarios in Texas losing 3 of 4 games to the Rangers and falling 7 games out of first and just a half game ahead of Oakland. Have some highlights: Torii torches a homer to straightaway center - Torii Hunter hammers a homer to straightaway center to get the Halos on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning, Andrus makes an amazing diving stop at short - Elvis Andrus makes an awe-striking play at short, diving in the hole for a grounder, then firing a laser across the diamond, Mathis takes a huge hit to make a huge tag - Jeff Mathis withstands a violent collision at home plate with the Rangers' Chris Davis, but somehow hangs onto the ball for the out, Matsui mashes a two-run shot to deep right - Hideki Matsui hammers a two-run home run to deep right field, his 13th of the 2010 campaign.

Red Sox-Angels Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
While Haren isn't slated to take the mound until Wednesday's finale, the opener features a solid pitching matchup between the Angels' Joel Pineiro (10-7, 4.18 ERA) and Boston's Clay Buchholz (10-5, 2.81). Both are trying to bounce back from disappointing losses. Pineiro allowed six runs and 11 hits in six innings of Wednesday's 10-6 loss to the Yankees, his first defeat since June 1. The right-hander was 7-0 with a 2.51 ERA over his previous eight starts. Buchholz, 2-2 with a 6.35 ERA in four career starts against Los Angeles, gave up four runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 17-8 win over the Angels on May 3.

The Angels' general manager once again has pulled the trigger on a potentially explosive midseason deal. That's three in three seasons, Mark Teixeira and Scott Kazmir having preceded new Angels starter Dan Haren to Anaheim.Reagins said he might not be done shopping, and he has no financial constraints. If the right bat surfaces at the right cost, he'll make a stealth move, as he always does. The guy moves in the shadows, BlackBerry attached to his ear, and when he emerges he tends to make things happen. The GM must like the organizational depth on the mound, having detached six arms to acquire Haren and Alberto Callaspo.

Kazmir won't be ready to return any time soon - The Orange County Register
Left-hander Scott Kazmir is eligible to come off the DL on Monday. But don't look for the struggling left-hander to rejoin the Angels' rotation any time soon. Kazmir was supposed to resume throwing sooner and even throw a bullpen session during this weekend's series in Texas. But he underwent an MRI on Thursday during which dye was injected into his shoulder. It will likely take two weeks for Kazmir to progress to long toss and possibly throw in a simulated game or rehab assignment before returning to the Angels' rotation.

Can someone explain
Why we just acquired an ace and it would seem relatively easy to set him up to pitch against both the Red Sox and Rangers immediately and maybe give this team a jump start, but instead Soth sets him up to pitch against the Red Sox and…… wait for it…. the Orioles…..
Washington has said he’s going to start Cliff Lee every fifth day regardless of how that effects his other 4 starters. While I wouldn’t go that far with Haren, why can’t he start tonight and move Pinero back a few games after Weaver.
To me this just seems like another braindead decision like starting Maffis instead of Napoli last night.
MH252525 - July 26, 2010
Uhh...
’Cause Cliff Lee is a 2010 rental and Haren is not? Texas will flog him like a rented pack mule for the the rest of the season.
LAASurfin - July 26, 2010
Exactly. Nolan Ryan and Ron Washington are perfectly happy to pitch Lee's arm off this season.
They don’t care that he will start the first month of the 2011 season on the DL with the MFY just like he did this season with the Mariners.
44FAN - July 26, 2010
Did you even read my post?????
I said I WOULDN’T start Haren every fifth day like Washingcrack is going to do with Lee. But I did say, why not let him pitch tonight so that he gets to pitch to the Rangers as well.
MH252525 - July 26, 2010
I'm still confused...
but, no worries. Wasn’t really my intention to snipe at anything you’d written.
Was mostly pointing out how Texas is very likely to overuse Lee in their own, short-term interests. They are all-in with him. They gave up the former #2 prospect in all of baseball (plus!) for a shot at 3 months of – they hope – glory. They’re probably not worrying much about his longer term health, because they have little chance of having him in the longer term.
I know YOU know all of this but it is still interesting food for thought.
Personally, I hope they ride him all the way to the point of pissing him off.
LAASurfin - July 26, 2010
yea I agree with all that
Texas is going to overuse him, and I hope it’s just enough to make him come up with like elbow problems next May when he’s in the Yanks rotation.
All I was saying to clear it up, was don’t start Haren every fifth day regardless of who is scheduled to pitch like Washington is going to do, but DO have him start tonight so that he faces the Rangers in the next series. Soth has since done exactly what I wrote.
MH252525 - July 26, 2010
I think texas has a shot at keeping Lee
unless Lee doesn’t mind changing teams again
GayForFeliz - July 26, 2010
Haren
is starting tonight…Weaver vs. Lackey and Piniero vs. Beckett.
maze88 - July 26, 2010
That's a hellofa
series.
LAASurfin - July 26, 2010
Weaver vs. Lackey!
I hope Weave spanks his ass and doesn’t even say a word.
Rally Manatee - July 26, 2010
This should set up
Santana, Haren, and Weaver for next weekend against Texas.
With an off day Thursday and Kazmir out for awhile, it is the perfect time to skip the 5th spot in the rotation.
RallyMonkey5 - July 26, 2010
That sounds about right
I feel fairly confident having Santana/Haren/Weaver against the Rangers.
Slyintine - July 26, 2010
Didn't quite realize that Haren...
…has allowed the most hits in the NL of any starting pitcher. Coming to the AL, that could be a bit of a concern despite his K/BB, etc.
I’m excited because the team needed a jolt, and we all know how prospects have worked with this team recently…
I’m just praying this won’t turn into a _ _ _ _ _ _ situation. I won’t dare mention his name any more and risk any ill luck ;)
RedFog - July 26, 2010
And on the plus side, also according to...
this, his .364, the best by a player whose primary position was pitcher (minimum 50 PA) since Carl Scheib hit .396 for the 1951 Philadelphia Athletics.
I know people joke about inserting him into the line up but can it really be any worse than some of our other options :P
If only injury wasn’t a risk, I’d say do it! Imagine the news it would make, even if for a day…
RedFog - July 26, 2010
Do it!
DH for Mathis!
RallyMonkey5 - July 26, 2010
I wonder who and when the last team was that started a pitcher...
…in the line-up in non-interleague play in the AL and because they actually wanted his bat in the line up.
There had to be someone in the 40’s and 50’s that did it once or twice? Some baseball historian must know…
RedFog - July 26, 2010
Rick Rhoden
With the Yankees, mid-late 80s, was used as a hitter. It may have happened more than once, but as the DH on 06/11/88, he went 0-1 with a Sac Fly & RBI.
jjackflash - July 26, 2010
Everyone in the AL started pitchers in the line-up during the 40's and 50's.
red floyd - July 26, 2010
He's been very unlucky with balls in play
Opponents batting average with balls in play is .350, which is absurd. His career average is around .300, so I don’t see him continuing to allow so many hits (and home runs), especially now that he’s gotten away from the sandbox known as Chase Field.
Slyintine - July 26, 2010
Couldn't answer the question
Offense and range in the outfield are the biggest weaknesses for this team, in my opinion. Joe Saunders was OK, starting pitching was not a big weakness. But the team can improve more by getting a legitimate star in Haren to improve what is already a strength than by trading for an average player (say, Callaspo) to help the offense.
RallyMonkey5 - July 26, 2010
The outfield is the biggest liability.
Offense is second.
Strange move, can’t disagree with it though. But what’s the point in putting Dan Haren out there, when you have a couple statues in the field?
clover_black - July 26, 2010
Dan Haren strikes a lot of people out
And strikeouts don’t drop in front of Juan Rivera’s ankles. Also, I’ve never seen a strikeout turn into a double because Torii Hunter and Bobby Abreu can’t get to a ball hit in front of them fast enough.
RallyMonkey5 - July 26, 2010
Jered Weaver strikes out more.
And this team repays him with a 9-6 record.
clover_black - July 26, 2010
Which ain't great
And is a good example of why grading pitchers by W/L record is mostly a bad idea.
LAASurfin - July 26, 2010
Bring up Bourjous and that solves the outfield D-Fence!
Rivera is struggling and has been struggling all year and now his defense is even worse because he is not hitting. He has nothing to hide behind now. Abrew is just Abrew.
angelskid2210 - July 26, 2010
According to Rojas' twitter
It’s looking like Haren will start tonight
Epic Dean - July 26, 2010
Yea I keep hearing Roger Lodge
saying Haren gets the start today…I’m pumped…
let’s see what this guy brings to the mound.
maze88 - July 26, 2010
You listen to Roger Lodge?
I’m sorry.
ryanfea - July 26, 2010
No kidding.
I tried listening to him because at least it was the most “Angel” oriented morning show for sports between 570 and 710, but I honestly rather listen to Vic the Brick say “Feeeeeeeeeelin you!” 737182754 times in a row than Lodge.
And sadly, even if Vic only knows about the Lakers and nothing else in sports, he still knows more than Lodge.
In fact, rumor has it the Ridin’ Dirty host knows more about sports :/
RedFog - July 26, 2010
Morning radio sports that talk about Angels Baseball
here in Vegas…..ZERO. So I enjoy listening to it online. There’s an app for that..lol
maze88 - July 26, 2010
You mean he does something other than 714-Tickets spots?
red floyd - July 26, 2010
Haren last pitched July 21st and Saunders was scheduled to go against Lackey on Tuesday
I’d rather see Haren go up against Benedict.
Quad Fin Rider - July 26, 2010
No hell no
we are throwing our ace at Benedict!
Angels_48 - July 26, 2010
Haven't you heard?
We have two aces now. :D
Slyintine - July 26, 2010
Haren isn't an ace???
I initially thought Pineiro would get bumped to Tuesday night. Me likey Weav vs Mr Ed just fine.
Quad Fin Rider - July 26, 2010
i second bourjos.
bat him 9th, behind the new guy. put him in lf and move him to cf in 2011.
Kernel - July 26, 2010
I'm starting to feel as if Bourjos is needed more now not only for defense...
but for the Angels to be able to play Sothball again. Stealing bases, going first to third, bunting, and taking extra bases. Just seems like we need to have speed at 1, 2 and 9 to get it done like we used to.
Aybar, Mice Tits, and Bourjos could potentially be that trio, especially if Aybar and Bourjos learned to take a walk And even more especially if Aybar learned to steal a base.
Wytelitning - July 26, 2010
I feel this way too
I liked watching the Angels play above average defense and use base hits/aggressive baserunning to get guys around the bases. No, they didn’t take many walks, but it was fun to watch.
Now they don’t take walks AND they’re slower than molasses AND they’re poor baserunners AND they can’t play defense, especially in the outfield. It’s painful to watch, since those things are Scioscia’s bread and butter.
Gorbachav5 - July 26, 2010
and can someone tell Torii
to stop stealing bases. He’s been caught 10 times while stealing 7. That’s pretty bad. The only way to put Bourjos in the lineup is to maybe bench Rivera or Abreu. I’m still not comfortable playing Bourjos everyday this year simply because the entire offense seems to be from our aging OF/DH with Mike Napoli. If Kendry was healthy and Wood could actually hit, then Bourjos might take LF.
phoenix15 - July 26, 2010
Seriously
His little “let me take off two seconds before the pitcher throws the ball because that’s the only way I’m stealing a base” routine was cute at first (when it worked out) and now irritates me, since it’s succesful maybe one time out of five. Torii – you’ve lost a step. Pick your spots better.
Gorbachav5 - July 26, 2010
Ok Ninja, time for another stealth move, get Soria from KC.
Fred Fredrix - July 26, 2010
believe it or not Fuentes is doing alright(what the hell did i juss say???)
Angels_48 - July 26, 2010
is it possible to use those words in a sentence?
phoenix15 - July 26, 2010
Well, there IS still a suspiciously vacant spot on the 40-man roster
First time in, well, a very long time the Angels FO has held a 40-man spot open. Callaspo filled O’Sullivan’s slot and Dan “The Baron” Haren fills Saunders slot. McAnulty’s former slot is still open.
LAASurfin - July 26, 2010
we gonna get Donnelly
or Pujols is nice too
phoenix15 - July 26, 2010
Looking for a power bat
Wouldn’t mind getting Garrett Jones.
Slyintine - July 26, 2010
Why?
He’s not very good. A downgrade on Napoli’s offense. No better than Rivera, Matsui, or Abreu, and like them a terrible fielder.
I’m all for a trade that can help us, but shouldn’t we try to get players who are better than what we’re already using?
RallyMonkey5 - July 26, 2010
Did anyone else find it very suspicious that Napoli didn't start last night?
Is there a deal in the works?
lightupthehalo29 - July 26, 2010
Not really
Napoli sitting on the bench is a pretty common thing for Mike Scioscia. Might have just wanted to give him a day off, and get Howie in the lineup along with our other singles hitting infielders. Napoli was getting ready to PH if the 9th inning had gone any further.
RallyMonkey5 - July 26, 2010
I doubt it
We don’t have anyone to fill the 1B spot (Frandsen? lol). Napoli has been playing for 8-straight games, and subbed in the most recent game he didn’t start.
He may get traded if we trade him for a 1B man, but it wouldn’t make any sense to trade a power bat for a power bat.
Slyintine - July 26, 2010
No.
But I did find it weird that Howie started at 1B.
LAASurfin - July 26, 2010
If there was a deal
It would have happened already. I doubt they would have held Napoli out without a deal being finalized (or so close to being finalized that it was a guarantee he’d be gone by now).
Gorbachav5 - July 26, 2010
Here are some of the players rumored to be traded soon:
Cantu OPS+ = 90
Derek Lee 89
Ty Wigginton 106
Garret Jones 104
Not any improvement on what we have:
Rivera 95
Abreu 101
Matsui 99
Napoli 116
If these are big bats, just say no. If we’re going to trade, it better be for somebody who is actually good. Like the Haren trade. Not like the Callaspo trade.
RallyMonkey5 - July 26, 2010
^ What he said! ^
LAASurfin - July 26, 2010
Tony Reagins has just sealed his fate
If Haren turns into Kazmir or another Saunders, he will end up unemployed. Oh and the reason Saunders was crying is because he is moving from OC to Phoenix in the middle of summer.
The Angels are still along way from competing with Texas. The Angels have two worthless outfielders, a we have no hr threat in the infield. (Naps belongs behind the plate). And Haren is far from a lock except for his large salary. Time will tell with him.
Dono Romantico - July 26, 2010
if it doesnt work out......
its not for a lack of trying though.
