Folks, Mike has been there, done that. Don't make vacation plans for October just yet, there may be baseball in Anaheim leading up to Halloween yet.

gotta win these next 2...........
and take 2 out of 3 from Boston, and 2 out of 3 from Tex at home……..then I’ll feel a tad bit better.
It's not the deficit in the standings that causes me to lose hope
It’s the negative run differential. The 2004 team had a +36 run surplus when they were down 6.0 games in late July, so they were due for a run. Meanwhile the 2006 team struggled to outscore their opponents almost the entire season. A good team might have a reasonable chance of closing a 7.0 game deficit in the last two months, but this team just doesn’t show any signs of life.
its because of
how this team lost early in the season. Remember in the beginning of the season, whenever Halos lost they would lose by like 10 runs? They always seemed to lose big whenever they lost. Now that kind of blowout game’s starting to happen less with the bullpen starting to stabilize.
And if you've watched enough baseball, it's the way the team has played all year...
…that gives one little hope. I’ll always still root for them, but except for them overacheiving after Kendry went down, have they really played in a manner comprable to any of the winning teams under Arte’s watch?
No.
Stats aside, it’s the whole ball of wax when you watch this team that is hard to have hope they can suddenly flick a switch and make up all those games. And Texas is playing the way we normally expect the Angels to play.
Not sure where the heart and fire of this team went other than like many feel, it might have walked out with the departure of Horse Face, Vlad, and Figgy. And right now, it is what it is.
But even then I feel that we have, and have had almost all season, a MUCH better team than the 2006 squad. The absence of Jeff Weaver alone helps that.
A healthy Morales in 2006, Kennedy slightly better than Kendrick, OC was slightly better than Aybar, Izturis was way better than whoever we are trotting out at 3b. Tim Salmon at DH. Monster Vlad, Figgins and Garrett in the OF.
I’d say that the 2006 squad was unquestionably better than the team we are fielding this year. I’d go so far as to say that the 2010 squad is the worst team the Angels have fielded since 2003.
Yeah but our offense is not the same as it was in 2004.
We had
Eckstein
Ernstad
Vlad
Anderson
Glaus
Guillen
Salmon
B Molina
Adam Kennedy
Most of these guys were in their prime Glaus, Vlad, Molina, Kennedy, Guillen, Anderson,
Compare that to the lagging 2010 offense
Aybar
Kendrick
Abreu
Hunter
Napoli
Matsui
Rivera
Izturis
Mathis
It just does not seem like our year. I hope that I am wrong but it just does not seem like it.
I was going to add something about the bullpen of 2004 vs 2010
but the names of Percy (2.90 ERA), Shields (3.31 ERA), Donnelly (3.00 ERA) & K-Rod (1.82 ERA) are only causing me to stare at my wrist & reach for a razor blade.
Just look at our remaining schedule. Stare at it for a few minutes. Its not bad at all and we have a ton of head to head games left with TEX. We have to perform obviously, but hope is far from lost.

So uh...
Did we make the playoofs in ’01? :)
Figgi4life - July 24, 2010 via mobile
of course we didn’t
back then As. were good, and wasn’t it Ichiro’s rookie year with the Ms?

I’m hopeful but not expecting much.
RedFog - July 24, 2010
I'm still optimistic and would never ever bet on Texas to perform down the stretch but
this does feel a lot like 2006

HungryHunter - July 24, 2010
What?
Morales was down in the minors, and I’m not sure Salmon was the everyday DH anyway.
The offense may have been better in ’06, but the pitching is better this year in my humble opinion.
Joey Kaufman - July 25, 2010
2004 makes me have a shred of hope.
Of course, if we have the same end result as we did in 2004, it will still be depressing. Just depressing in October instead of now.

Stop that crazy talk.
opiejeanne - July 24, 2010
Two biggest differences
The bullpen is significantly worse and there is no Vlad in his prime to carry the team on his shoulders.
HungryHunter - July 24, 2010
but we have Mathis in his prime
aha!!!!
