At least Matsui
gave us 2 GW hits. Kazmir pitches like a AAA pitcher and we gave up prospects for him. At least we only gave a 1 year cheap deal to Matsui.
the problem with the Kazmir trade isn’t necessarily SRod’s performance (which has been mediocre for TB) but rather the massive contract owed Kazmir. We have another GMJ on our books for next year.
For instance, say by the 5th inning the Halo’s bats come alive and score 5; SOS or whomever gives up 5 with 80 pitches; Soth let’s him keep pitching another inning.
Its not an insane proposition to think he turns it around for the second half.
However, Matsui is only signed one year. Kazmir is a significantly more expensive player signed for multiple years. If both players keep up their play then, yes, Kazmir is the obvious choice.
Although he will be here for more years, the talent is there to turn it around. Make Butcher the scapegoat, light a fire under Kaz, and see what happens.
exactly! and the fact that if we didnt have Matsui, we would have Vlad who’s just happens to be having one of the best years out of anyone….for the team we are chasing to get into the playoffs!!!
If we had vlade in there instead of matsui, we’d be able to make up for all the poor outings by Kazmir
If, If, If. If Grandma had balls she'd be one seriously effed up lady!
If we’d had Vlad this year, he probably would have produced as much/little as he did last year. He would be pissed that he didn’t get the contract that he wanted. He is highly motivated this year in a ballpark he loves to hit in.
Kazmir makes 8 million this year. Then 12 million next year, with a 2.5 million buyout after 2011. Any bets on whether the Angels don’t take the buy-out. At this point, its a totaly no brainer.
Let us pay to make him go away. His contract is GMJR bad.
He had great career numbers against the Yanks and Sux. Team management probably thought he might be the key to another world series appearance. If he was the Kaz of 2006-2008, we would have given the Yanks a much tougher series.
Too bad it backfired. We gave away a lot of talent for a really bad pitcher with a huge contract.
We knew it was a rental and with Boras as his agent, knew it would be tough to resign him. He played very well and we only gave up Kotchman and Marek who both haven’t done anything since the trade. It also allowed us to move Morales up who’s cheap and a very good player. Sounds like a trade I would happily make again.
true, we toook a shot…. its better than not trying imo…
its comforting knowing mcpherson didn’t turn into anything special. Meanwhile the whole Kazmir-S. Rod is a bit less comforting seeing how for a pretty young guy, the kid is doing phenomenal……compared to Kaz that is
Giving up prospects AND taking on $25m or $30m in contract obligations for a young pitcher with a history of injuries, who hadn’t pitched well in the year we traded for him, should be grounds for termination of the GM.
lol i wouldnt say grounds for termination, but he is defintely not in good standing….as much as I love loyalty in an organization, I only have so much patience for terrible moves, especially when we have been good for so long… I really hope this bad year doesn’t take us back to the 90’s of constantly competing with the rangers just to get a spot in the post season only to be promptly eliminated
I am awfully, terribly emotional, and princeton11loveshalos will not be there to balance me out… But maybe I’ll see my first Angels win? Could happen, right?

phoenix15 - July 20, 2010
Kazmir will haunt us for years
Matsui will be a faded memory in a couple of months
mustard_man - July 20, 2010
I've already forgot that he's in this lineup.
clover_black - July 20, 2010
Exactly...
Though SRod is not exactly tearing it up…he is only 25 years old in a talent rich system.
Alex Torres is doing well at AA for Rays and pitched a scoreless inning in the Futures game for the World team.
K3YEROUT - July 20, 2010
It's SRod's first full season in MLB
I think he’s exceeded expectations at this point of time.
mustard_man - July 20, 2010
As was pointed out to me in another thread...
the problem with the Kazmir trade isn’t necessarily SRod’s performance (which has been mediocre for TB) but rather the massive contract owed Kazmir. We have another GMJ on our books for next year.
Nashdiesel - July 20, 2010
Two years to be exact
righteous halo - July 20, 2010
And
maybe the Halos can convince Kennedy to come back. He can play 1st and 3rd, and all he’s doing for the Nats is rotting on their bench.
phoenix15 - July 20, 2010
Kinda curious why odds are only 2-1 on today's pregame pick...
K3YEROUT - July 20, 2010
because rev keeps losing
DAD OF VLAD - July 20, 2010
This is a gimmie pick today...
No one should get this wrong if they read the question and think about it.
WasianCU - July 20, 2010
Yeah, but the payoff for taking YES should be better than 2-1
K3YEROUT - July 20, 2010
Don't agree--far from a done deal
For instance, say by the 5th inning the Halo’s bats come alive and score 5; SOS or whomever gives up 5 with 80 pitches; Soth let’s him keep pitching another inning.
Raaddad - July 20, 2010
It doesn't matter how big of a lead we have...
It will be a Yankee pitcher that throws the last pitch in the TOP of the 5th inning.
WasianCU - July 20, 2010
This ^^^
red floyd - July 20, 2010
The question should read bottom of the fifth inning, not top of the fifth inning.
It is Angels at NYY, no Angel pitcher will pitch in the top of the fifth inning. Rev goofed again…
44FAN - July 20, 2010
damn
Wasn’t reading/thinking closely enough.
So was it supposed to be a trick question, or will it likely be changed to reflect what you just wrote?
cath619 - July 20, 2010
Oh eff I read the question wrong
Should’ve gone all in
TheKingfish - July 20, 2010
Kazmir had a worst first half last year
Its not an insane proposition to think he turns it around for the second half.
However, Matsui is only signed one year. Kazmir is a significantly more expensive player signed for multiple years. If both players keep up their play then, yes, Kazmir is the obvious choice.
PhiSlamma - July 20, 2010
Matsui kills this team nightly
Kazmir only kills them every 5th game.
Although he will be here for more years, the talent is there to turn it around. Make Butcher the scapegoat, light a fire under Kaz, and see what happens.

sheisalovelyladyandmyapologiestoher - July 20, 2010
why didn't Angels management take into consideration that Vlad
might be playing in our division? Oh and by the way, he has been kicking our ass in his former home stadium too.
Dono Romantico - July 20, 2010
Why would we want a washed up basketball center in LF?
red floyd - July 20, 2010
lol the vlade joke is soooo old…
robi s - July 21, 2010
Vlade is old
That’s why he retired from professional basketball.
linkbruin - July 21, 2010
Then learn to spell "Vladdy".

Kaz was a risk.

sothball - July 20, 2010
Kind of like the Texeira trade......I mean rental.
both were done for the same reason, and both times it didn’t work out. Hmmmmm who was the GM behind these trades?
Dono Romantico - July 20, 2010
Teixeira wasn't a bad trade...
We knew it was a rental and with Boras as his agent, knew it would be tough to resign him. He played very well and we only gave up Kotchman and Marek who both haven’t done anything since the trade. Heading up to the stadium now...
Cross your fingers that everything goes better than we expect! Go Halos!
cath619 - July 20, 2010
Alright!
You wild Halo-gal you!
Give em hell!
Raaddad - July 20, 2010
there will be no hell-giving
I am awfully, terribly emotional, and princeton11loveshalos will not be there to balance me out… But maybe I’ll see my first Angels win? Could happen, right?
cath619 - July 20, 2010 via mobile
Maybe Godzilla will awaken
and administer the type of shellacking to the Yanks that Vlad did to us.
Last time, however, I think he only had one hit the whole series.
Raaddad - July 20, 2010
Represent well
Dono Romantico - July 20, 2010
Moondoggy’s daughter and her friends and I are!
cath619 - July 20, 2010 via mobile
Why hasn't anyone brought up
the fact that when we traded for Kaz, most here were for it. While most people were against letting Vlad walk.
Dono Romantico - July 20, 2010
i bring it up all the time
apparently while you are sleeping
Rev Halofan - July 20, 2010
I was against letting Vlad walk over to the Rangers.
It seemed likely he’d go there, and that he’d do rather well (maybe not quite as well as he is doing, but above replacement for sure).
I was okay (sad, but okay) seeing him go other than that.
AlanFalcon - July 20, 2010
I don't remember most being for it.
I remember a lot of indifference to the deal, kind of a well they did it let’s see how it works out attitude.
snowhor - July 20, 2010 via mobile
A lot of people were for the Kaz trade
Until SRod was the PTBNL.
linkbruin - July 20, 2010
I hope our biggest mistake this year isn't failing to sign Cowart
BP Scanner - July 20, 2010
WRONG
I bet you were actually ecstatic to eat your words on this one, huh Rev? =).
Jason Andrew Martin - July 21, 2010
And Sully...
after that first inning, slapped that shit-eating grin right off of Ted Berg’s face =).
Jason Andrew Martin - July 21, 2010
i was qute happy to be wrong
yep!
Rev Halofan - July 21, 2010
Harrah's probably made a lot of money from lost bets on the game
