No Support for Santana, Off Day Homework.  Halolinks

Angels' Ervin Santana could sue for nonsupport after 2-1, 10-inning loss to Seattle - latimes.com
For the Angels, it was another futile offensive effort in a game started by Ervin Santana. The right-hander did not receive a decision after giving up only one run in seven innings. He is 0-2 in his last three starts despite pitching at least seven innings in each game and compiling a 2.31 earned-run average, largely because his teammates have averaged one run of support in those outings. "Ervin's been as consistent as anyone in our league," Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said, "and we just didn't get him the support this afternoon."  Hunter, who aspires to be a general manager after his playing career ends, sounded like Scioscia when asked about the schedule. "This stretch is very important," Hunter said, "but for me, Tuesday [against the Yankees] is more important than anything. We have to take it one game at a time."

No!  It's like "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers".  Scioscia has finally infected the last hold-out for spontaneity as Hunter is now sounding like the boring quote machine.  It's a sad day...a sad day indeed.  Get your highlights here: Napoli jacks a solo shot to left-center - Mike Napoli goes yard off Jason Vargas in the bottom of the second to put the Angels on top, 1-0,  Santana strikes out seven over seven innings - Ervin Santana strikes out seven over seven innings of work.  And your low-lights:  Langerhans scores on Santana's wild pitch - Ryan Langerhans comes home after Ervin Santana throws the ball away in the fifth.

Star-divide

Angels need their GM to step up  - The Orange County Register
In recent weeks, Daniels has crushed Reagins by trading for pitcher Cliff Lee – who’s better than anyone the Angels have, including Jered Weaver – and Bengie Molina, who joined Texas just in time to hit for the cycle, the home run being a go-ahead grand slam. Meanwhile, the Angels used someone named Paul McAnulty as a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning Sunday. A few minutes later, they were designating McAnulty and his .136 average for assignment, which is the baseball equivalent of having your position out-sourced to India.

I hate to say this...I can't believe I'm saying this...Jeff...Jeff Miller...Jeff Miller is right.  {head explodes}

James Gammon, played Lou Brown in 'Major League,' dies at 70 -  Yahoo! Sports
James Gammon, who played skipper Lou Brown in the film "Major League" and its first sequel, died in Costa Mesa, Calif. on Friday, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Also a resident of Ocala, Fla., Gammon was 70.

My favorite "Lou Brown" quote, and something I remind my wife of daily, "You may run like Hayes, but you hit like shit".

Peralta hits an inside-the-park homer - Video MLB.com: Multimedia
Ryan Raburn can't corral Jhonny Peralta's fly ball to center, resulting in an inside-the-park home run that scores three

But the bullpen corrals Ryan Raburn.

Memories of Keith - Bugs & Cranks
It’s not that it isn’t a good story — it is. It’s simply because — celebrity or not — it’s one of the most embarrassing pieces of communication of my young-ish life.

Kind of a funny story, but it gives an example of today's off-day assignment; Have you ever made an idiot of yourself when meeting a ballplayer?  If so, please tell us your story in the comments below.

Angels " Win Probability " Sunday, July 18, 2010 - FanGraphs Baseball

July 19 - BR Bullpen
1952 - The visiting Fitzgerald club (Georgia State League) sends up 12-year-old batboy Joe Reliford to bat as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning of a game with Statesboro. The black batboy, who theerby breaks the league's color barrier, grounds out, but makes a fine catch in the outfield when he stays in the game. Umpire Ed Kubick, who approved the move, will be fired by the league the next day.
2002 - Anaheim OF Tim Salmon strokes five hits in the Angels' 15 - 3 win over the Mariners. He drives home five runs in the contest, including three on his 15th home run of the year. The Angels score eight runs in the 6th inning to break open the game.
2009 - John Lackey and rookie Brett Anderson are locked in a scoreless pitching duel for 9 innings before a solo homer from Bobby Abreu in the 10th inning wins the game for the Angels, 1 - 0 over the A's. Abreu had earlier broken Anderson's bid for a perfect game in the 7th.  Ah, the good-old-days.  I remember them fondly.  When the Angels could win extra-inning, pitchers duels.  Makes me sort of nostalgic.

I like this
Brian Fuentes 9-6
a trade won't give us a ring

we don’t have what it takes to take october, a least not as far as i can tell. trading for an impact bat makes little sense when we get that impact bat back next spring. our farm system needs to mature, and selling off pieces for a very temporary fix doesn’t make much sense to me.

unless someone else likes brandon wood.

Yep, and I hope Reagins and Arte are willing to accept that for this year.

If we can get someone who helps the team and would be around after this season, it’s worth looking into, but I don’t see the point in trading away a bunch of prospects for a player who will be wearing an Angels uniform for half a season.

well you're incorrectly quoting it every time

“You may run like HAYES (as in Bob Hayes), but you hit like shit.”

Damn.

You’re right. Fixed.

"HIt like shit" quote vs. "No crying in baseball" quote

Lou Brown wins for me because of his voice. What a tough SOB kind of voice.

Though Tom Hanks’ line stands to this day as pretty damn relevant. Used on my son this past LL season. Cut that crying out instantly!

Wife got me a father's day card with the "no crying in baseball" line recorded on the card.

I couldn’t stop laughing, that line is classic.

Lou Brown definitely best movie manager
McAnulty

Gets too much hate around here. Give him enough time, and he really wouldn’t be a bad option as a backup 1b/dh/lf/ph. And he did his job yesterday. He took a walk, representing the go ahead run. Aybar and Kendrick let us down.

Q is a much better option.
Never thought I'd see someone say that.
Q can at least put the ball in play (for an out).
I don't think we've seen the last of Chunk
Chunk?

Is that what we’re calling him? I thought he was Bloated Mark Wahlberg.

Wouldn't that be Mark GreatWahlberg?
I thought we were calling him Big Mac or McFatty

or McNuts or McAnus or Fats or….

Wouldnt that be Mark GreatWahlburger?
right now it's McDFA
Lou Brown was played by veteran western character actor James Gammon

who died last July at the age of 70. I always loved the guy in westerns like Silverado and Conagher but he was great in the Major League movies.

I'm sorry I meant to say this July
Vargas is a hell of a pitcher...

for now. I got him on my fantasy squad and he is probably more consistent than Verlander, Hanson or Kershaw. Kinda reminds me of Saundo circa 2008.

Verlander...

… I way overdrafted him. He gets hit a lot, and what’s with the 5 BB’s??? Drafting pitchers is such a crapshoot in fantasy. Halladay has 8 losses and july isn’t even over yet? WTF?

I drafted half of my position players

Then my pitchers. Adam Wainwright, Jered weaver, Thank you.

You got Wainwright in the 6th round?

Are you in a fantasy league with monkeys?

Kevin Jepsen

just plain can’t get anyone out.

Ignoring that the game winning hit was a broken-bat blooper into left...
AND...

I’m still trying to figure out how the ump missed k3 the pitch before the game tying HR the previous night…?????

That breaking pitch was so right down the middle he must have blinked or shit himself or something!

My favorite Victor line from earlier in the season...

“Straight up the middle for a ball…”

I'd give him the BOTD, if he didn't walk a guy.

Our bullpen has to stop walking so many guys if we are going to win more of these close games.

The bullpen's walks are bad

It would also be nice if our pitchers knew how to slow down the running game or if our catchers could throw down to second on a straight line. This is at least the second time in a few weeks where a stolen base late in the game has led to a crucial run. I hate watching our guys get thrown out on the basepaths only to see the other team running like crazy.

yea Jeps needs to do a bit better

but the offense is what is holding this team back right now. Bobby, Hideki,…. f@#% the whole offense except maybe Torii has gone into streaks where they do next to nothing.

At least Aybar seems to be doing a bit better recently.

Torii is in such a streak now
Howie has been hitting alright recently

He might finally be pulling out of that unlucky streak he was in the first half. The middle of the order has been a wasteland.

Howie tripled to lead off an inning...

and failed to score following at bats from our #3 and #4 hitters. Just plain ridiculous and cost us the game.

Well that and the fact that Napoli can’t handle the pressure of hitting the ball far with men on base.

He's great at hitting solo homers

But, the BOTG should be the guys who couldn’t get Howie home from third

How is Danny Glover

not a choice for “Best Movie Manager” ever?

Im still saying
Sosh should’ve kept Fuentes in there for the lefty lefty matchup, then put Jepsen in. Seriously, one of the game’s best leftys and a guy you NEED to keep off the bases and Fuentes pitching last inning. It might’ve been different if Fuentes pitched against Ichiro, or Jepsen didn’t walk Ichiro. Then Ichiro doesn’t get tagged at 3rd, Gutierrez is easily out, only way for Ms to get the lead if Lopez hits a HR.

OT: Eric Byrnes is on MLBN right now

and the dude is intense. He’s said Oppo Taco about 6 times talking about Buster Posey

I hate days off
I recommend a replay of the 2009 ALDS, game 3...

…along with popcorn and beer of course. The look on Papelbutt’s face alone is worth it.

Meh..

It was nice beating Boston but losing to the Yankees in the ALCS kinda kills it for me at least personally..

I'd love to beat the MFY's last year...

…don’t you get some joy out of beating the Sux? Especially after they “owned” us in the playoff’s? In Fenway? With P-Butt on the mound? Come on now…there is pure joy and ecstasy in those moments.

I think
those DPs killed us the most. And the fact that our leadoff man magically disappears in the postseason.

We played very poor baseball the first 2 games.

Can’t spot a team 2 games like that and expect to win the series. Plus Sabathia was “on”.

The Kernels sent 20 to the plate in the 7th Yesterday

Link

That would have been fun to see, scored 14 runs

And Mike "Cutthroat" Trout hit his first HR for Rancho Kook
That.........

plus a 2B and a 3B in 4 PA’s tonight. He’s getting acclimated.

The game’s still going in the 8th……Quakes losing right now…………..

Quakes score 4 in the 8th for the come from behind win. Woot.

In this same inning Mike Trout drew a walk and went 1st to 3rd on a single, eventually scoring. Angels baseball all the way.

The Contradictory Jeff Miller

Maybe he is on to something, but he’s totally contradicting himself. He goes off on how Reagins is basically asleep at the switch and getting out-manuevered by Daniels. He talks about how Reagins needs to make some moves to keep this team afloat, not just in the AL West, but in order to go anywhere in the playoffs. But, then he complains how there is nobody in Farm System that the team deems ready to make a contribution, and he cites McNulty and Aldridge as examples of just how far we’re scraping the barrel.

But, these points are totally self-contradicting, aren’t they? Reagins could make a move in keeping with the Rangers. The Rangers traded one of their best upper level prospects to get Cliff Lee. Does Miller think we had a prospect in our system, as highly regarded as Smoak, who we could have given up to the Mariners? Somehow, i don’t think we could have gotten Lee for someone like Trumbo, for example.

So, we could be making trades that keep us more closely in the pennant race, but that would only serve to deplete our Farm System, which was one of Miller’s complaints. Trading top prospects may or may not keep you in the pennant race, but it will definitely purge your farm system of decent prospects and put us even deeper into that hole that Miller is complaining about. Conger or Trout for Cliff Lee anyone? I didn’t think so.

The argument that the Angels should promote Bourjos, Trout and Kohn (that seem to be making the rounds here) were not really addressed by Miller and I suppose that is a debate for another day. But, I would argue that the Angels have no interest in repeating the mistakes made in Brandon Wood’s development. Bringing him for short stints to the major league roster, to cover for injuries, while not giving him a chance to play everyday, and burning through his player options. That has got to be somewhere in the back of their heads.

I totally agree with your last point.

I didn’t understand why team management brought Brandon Wood up from AAA, and then…sat him on the bench. It’s not like there weren’t other options (Sandoval, Brown, Sean Rodriguez) t fill space on the bench.

Brandon Wood rates as one of the most poorly handled “prize” prospects. I can’t see how they could have handled his options much worse.

And damn it sure pisses me off...

Strange thing is…many of us said the same thing at the time that it was happening…they had to see it too, they aren’t stupid!

I blame the freemasons
"Freemason?"

“No, I’m kinda busy now. Check back in an hour.”

I finally don't get one of your jokes
"[Are you] Free, Mason?"
I'm lost right now
Cath619 got it. Think of "free" as "do you have free time".

I think I stole this from the Three Stooges (nyuk, nyuk, nyuk).

Jesus

I thought I was sharper than that.

Hello

I just signed up here and wanted to introduce myself. I am a Red Sox fan and will be here when we play you guys, but I want to get to know the blog now.

welllllll...

Howdy there, bestbostonsports. Thanks for introducing yourself. Out of curiosity, why will you be here when the teams play? I mean, what do you hope to gain from being part of our discussions, or hope to contribute? Just wondering. Personally, I’d be scared to join the Sox blog. :)

You’ll be rooting for us tonight and tomorrow against the Yankees, right? :)

Of course

I like getting new prespectives from rival fans ;)

But you don't like postspectives?

;)

Don't troll and you'll be alright.

And come prepared with a thick skin, we’ll let you have we’re losing.

yes, a "thick skin"

and a sense of humor are extremely important
and I, for one, have no clue how you will keep from getting banned at some point

Thanks to my dynamic Hometown Buffet-centric diet,

I have pretty thick skin.

lol

pretty thick everything I imagine with that diet

Could he have found a more disgusting place to have a -centric diet in?

Hometown sucks worse than Brandon Wood’s swing

Soup Plantation is clearly the way to go
Someone fell off the.....

I don't troll
You're trolling right now

(Note: one key element to any understanding of the typical Halo fan is that we all hate Boston. We may like the city itself (I have to admit I do), but we hate all the Boston teams with a fervid passion based on past history vis-a-vis those teams and their fans and the 4-letter network that inexplicably idolizes them, circulating a rancid mythos of pomposity and hyper-egotism that drives the rest of the country crazy.)

not to mention

a particular horse-faced Kermit the Frog wannabe…

You sound like Kevin Bacon in "Animal House"

ALL IS WELL!!!!!!

Welcome, it’s customary on HH to post your picture when first introducing yourself

Here’s me

Do we know yet who is pitching tonight?

SOS?
Scot-y Shields?
Bell?
Matt Palmer (hey, he’s off the DL . . .)
Oswalt?

SOS I do reckon.
Thank you my brother

hope all is well with you

I'm right as rain and pure as the driven snow.

Anywho, how have you been stranger?

could be better

Almost died on the beaches of Encinitas this weekend
4 days, 4 lifeguards, 6 paramedics, 2 doctors, 5 nurses, 2 dozen needle stabs and about 800 of the same questions asked over and over-later, I was diagnosed with cellulitis after being mis-diagnosed with heat stroke. Leg is all jacked up.
O well, the reaper hasn’t got me yet, but it sure ef-d up my vacation at the beach.

couple that with a reply fail

back to my old habits

Nasty stuff

Even if you don’t drink the water, taking a shower down there can be hazardous too if you have a minor cut or scratch that the bacteria can seep into.

Uh, QFR?

Encinitas is an expensive community just north of San Diego.

You were thinking of Ensenada.

opps, coffee hadn't kicked in yet

I used to go surfing there at Swami’s before l tore up my knee last year.

Yea, we were just below Swami's camping on the bluff

I went down on the beach below the cliffs, and man, the waves were just gorgeous.
Oh well at least I had a few good sessions in the surf. Son of Raaddad carried on without me

Oh man. Sorry to hear that.

Here’s to getting better as soon as possible.

Are they going to have to perform any surgery? Or do they just have you on antibiotics?

Hope you're ok!
Thanks

I’m on antibiotics. The shot I took to my ass was the real bitch—damn!
You are totally right Quad. Yea, a kid died at Children’s Hospital a week ago from that shit. They didn’t catch it in time and it went up his leg and right to his heart.
Now I can’t swim or bodysurf for like 2 weeks and I’m seriously bummed.
I told my wife I can still have sex though
she just has to be on top.
There are advantages to this afterall…

If there is interest... SELL SELL SELL

Matsui… even if we are hanging in there at 4 games back and we think we can still win the west… if someone has interest in Matsui we should look to get some better AAA/Major League ready talent that might help our bullpen/bench… more depth is better than an aging, wilting player who we won’t re-sign next season anyways. Even if we get a former high ranked pitcher whose coming off tommy john surgery or something…

Juan Rivera… the guy is OK… nothing spectacular here… if we could get Roy Oswalt and a potential bullpen pitcher/prospect for Wood, Rivera, and say… Scott Kazmir that would be sweet.

I’ve also noticed that the Reds have an abundance of young pitching… Mike Leake, Travis Wood and Aroldis Chapman.. they could spare one of them no?

1. E. Volquez
2. B. Arroyo
3. J. Cueto
4. M. Leake
5. T. Wood
6. A. Harang (DL)
7. H. Bailey (DL)
8. A. Chapman

Mike Napoli – The Reds catching situation and bench are not super strong. Matsui could be a good bat coming off the bench for the post season. Mike Napoli would be a nice bat to throw into the mix for bench strength, catching, and Joey Votto rest days at first base.

so yeah…

SELL: Brandon Wood, Mike Napoli, Juan Rivera, Scott Kazmir, Hideki Matsui… might as well throw Scott Shields in there(maybe Bud Black and the Padres will hand us something good so they can reunite and relive the 2002 glory days when the Pads go to the post season)… regardless of whether we are “buyers or sellers” getting closer to the deadline. I can’t see us being worse off if we traded any of these guys.

Any other players we should sell regardless of whether or not we are in the hunt for the west title again?

You no its bad when

You have a player(Hunter) Coming out in the media and saying we need Dunn Or Prince. The way I look at it is, if we dont make a move we dont make the play offs. With the addition of lee Texas has gotten even better.

Its a tie with me.. My favorite ever Jimmy Dugan quote though is..

“Dont get the clap”-Jimmy Dugan..“thats great advice kid.”
