After an exciting pitching match-up between two of the best hurlers in the league last night, an ugly match-up between Joe Saunders and Ryan Rowland-Smith produced a predictably ugly game. Both starters brought gas cans and lighters with them to the mound, leading to a 13-run slugfest between two offenses not normally associated with the word "slug." Rowland-Smith went up in flames early, allowing 5 earned runs without escaping the fourth inning, whereas Joe Saunders burned slowly as a 6-1 cushion evaporated into a narrow 6-5 lead after the sixth. Josh Bard tied the game in the seventh with a solo homer off of Kevin Jepsen, but Juan Rivera struck back with a solo blast of his own in the bottom half of the frame. Rodney and Fuentes teased the Mariners with a couple of late base runners, but mercifully held the lead anyways.
Texas tried to get one too many innings from Cliff Lee tonight and lost their game in extra innings, leaving the Angels to pick up a game in the standings. Look what can happen when the Angels actually get run production from someone other than Torii Hunter. Thanks, Seattle. We'd like to see you again tomorrow

"But Juan Rivera is Worthless"
:-)
norcaliangelsfan - July 17, 2010
or priceless. Depends on the time of year.
opiejeanne - July 17, 2010
Juan Rivera is worthless.
Don’t let small sample sizes vs shitty teams make you think any different.
clover_black - July 17, 2010
how about career numbers vs every team?
He’s far from worthless.
norcaliangelsfan - July 17, 2010
+1
vladtheimpaler - July 17, 2010
His only worth will be a trade piece to get something that is marginally less shitty.
But hey, thats just like, my opinion man.
Some people like special olympians in left field and weak groundouts to 3rd base.
clover_black - July 17, 2010
Personally I like a career that averages .280 BA 23 HR 84 RBI and a close to .800 OPS........
on a team that hasnt exactly been an offensive powerhouse in the last half dozen years.
norcaliangelsfan - July 17, 2010
Fuentes I get no respect
aldo H - July 17, 2010
he has a sub 4 ERA again.........
Im holding off prasing him…..because it seems like when I do the very next time he comes out he gets lit up.
norcaliangelsfan - July 17, 2010
True idk how many straight saves he has but hes doing one hell of a job
aldo H - July 17, 2010
well thats only 2 straight saves.......
he had a BS against KC on Jul 2.
But he’s had 11 out of his last 12……….of save opps converted.
norcaliangelsfan - July 17, 2010
rawr?
vladtheimpaler - July 17, 2010
I thought it was 10 straight saves as of tonight.
opiejeanne - July 17, 2010
dont know how thats possible.........
when he blew the save against KC just a couple weeks ago.
The game the team lost 2-1 in extras
norcaliangelsfan - July 17, 2010
I don't know either.
Last night someone here said it was 8 straight saves before he came in to pitch.
opiejeanne - July 17, 2010
Tonight was his third in a row
He converted nine in a row before the blown save against KC on July 2.
Suboptimal - July 17, 2010
yeah forgot to count yesterdays save......
whoops. lol
norcaliangelsfan - July 17, 2010
See, I told ya you were suppose to do the postgame
POTG: Rawr
Poll choice: Juan “after the all star break” Rivera
Nice to gain a game on the Rangers. Let’s get another one back tomorrow.
vladtheimpaler - July 17, 2010
What was the pitch count for
that f**ker Lee tonight? I saw that he went 9 innings again…his arm’s gonna fall off. Lmao! Wish he would’ve gotten the L
maze88 - July 17, 2010 via mobile
Only 105
Not that bad. What is hilarious though is that the main LSB’ers are balling their eyes out for Lee. They ignore that he gave up 6 against the Orioles (who probably have a better offense than the BoSox he faced today) and 2 against a team that only has 4 real hitters.
Lee is obviously good, but I’m not convinced that the Rangers are a lock after getting him.
sctrojan13 - July 17, 2010
If Lee keeps this up
he’s gonna burn out his arm by Sept. and ruin a potential HoF career. Sound like anyone 30 years ago?
phoenix15 - July 17, 2010
It's only 200 pitches in 2 games
The Rangers haven’t made him go crazy pitch count wise, a high IP isn’t always horrible.
In a Yankee-less world I would want Lee to continue great after this year, but it’s not so I hope he is never the same pitcher again once he joins his old buddy cheeseburger.
sctrojan13 - July 17, 2010 via mobile
Lee’s the
opposite of Kazmir. It’ll take Kazmir about 200 pitches just to get a CG in 1 game.
phoenix15 - July 17, 2010
If by "potential HoF career" you mean "career eerily reminiscent of Aaron Sele's"
mattwelch - July 18, 2010
balling or bawling?
big difference.
Downing Rules - July 18, 2010
The Rangers don't care if his arm falls off, he is just a rental.
He will start next season with the Yankees but on the DL for the first month just like he did with the Mariners this year.
44FAN - July 17, 2010
No love for Reggie Wilits?
ryanfea - July 17, 2010
Reggie! Reggie! Reggie!
How’s that?
3rd Echelon - July 17, 2010
Very Nice
ryanfea - July 17, 2010
Here it is

mjhsieh - July 18, 2010
Bard hit the home run off of Jespsen, not Smoak
After the blown 3rd strike call
SoCalWine - July 17, 2010
Fixed
Thanks for the tip.

Wonder how Figgy really feels about being away from the Angels...?!
I mean besides rich, robviously…
K3YEROUT - July 18, 2010 via mobile
4/$36MM buys a lot of loyalty.........and tongue biting.
wumbug - July 18, 2010
Better question is...
I wonder if the Mariners will ever offer a big-money FA contract to a beloved Angel ever again (see Spiezio and Figgins)? That’s gotta hurt.
Downing Rules - July 18, 2010
I think the Ms
learned the consequences of signing Angel players. Texas on the other hand.
phoenix15 - July 18, 2010
Gas can and lighters weren't only for the pitchers...
Fielding was ugly too. Special incendiary mention has to go to Smoak with 2 errors last night for the M’s. Always helpful when your opponent makes 3 fielding errors in a game. Like a bonus inning=3 extra outs.
