Final Score in Anaheim: Angels 8, Mariners 3
They don't look a thing like Brian McCann, but the results were the same for Erick Aybar and Bobby Abreu on Thursday at Angel Stadium as they were for the All Star Game MVP there on Tuesday. 3 ribbys each on clutch hits by two guys that the Angels will require to produce to have a chance in the AL West this season.
You have to wonder about the level of competition in the Mariners when Extra-Large Paul McAnulty beats out an infield bouncer for a hit. Are the Mariners already going through the motions... or perhaps they love us and are saving their effort for when they play the Rangers. That would be nice. McAnulty's jellyrolls legging out a single was one highlight and 3B Kevin Frandsen making a web-jam© catch by jumping what appeared to be ten feet off the ground to snare a Mariner liner was another.
All-Star Torii Hunter hosted the game by not doing anything. Remember that guy Jeff Mathis, yes, he is still on the Angels and he had two no wow THREE hits in the game. His 4th double of the season yielded his 9th RBI of 2010.
Oh and Joel Pineiro pitched pretty good. If Quality Starts were a million bucks, he would have made a million bucks tonight, but at the rate he is pitching they will actually be paying Joel LESS than a million bucks per quality start this season.
8 runs, 16 hits... a month and a day early for Madonna's birthday!

great book
RexTookMyStash - July 15, 2010
if you like that, read Tom Wolfe's "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test"
for his great personal observations back when he was traveling with Ken Kesey. Director Gus Van Sant is currently making a movie based on that book.
Quad Fin Rider - July 15, 2010

Thanks for the recommendation.

The batting-helmet-over-the-cap look has increased McAnulty's dork factor by at least 5
3rd Echelon - July 15, 2010
All he needs is a pocket protector...
I’m not checking out his rear end to see if he has one on his back pocket.

I still have my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd series. Love GPK’s, how awesome is it that we have a real live one playing 1st base for us!

POTG Pineiro. What will happen to Kaz?
1st pitcher to 10 wins on the club. Not an amazing feat, but a testament to his consistency nonetheless. I hope he’s still on the team in 2 1/2 weeks.
Weaver pitched Sunday, and will pitch tomorrow (I’ll be there!) which means he’s pitching on normal rest. If there were no all-star break, Kazmir should’ve pitched tonight. So, obviously there is some rotation shuffling going on. Who thinks Kaz will be shuffled off totally? Or will Sosh give him one more try? I really hope not. We really can’t afford to lose every fifth game at this point.
Rally Manatee - July 16, 2010
yeah, sosh is saving kazmir for the yankees
in yankee stadium. where the HR total can get humongous. if he’s going to lose, lose in embarrassing fashion.
daze - July 16, 2010
please, no.
If I end up going next week, I want a chance for my Angels-games-attended record to improve to 1-3.

A Taylor and Nathan Haynes.

But not until after this series.

Goodbye points... sniff, sniff...
Balls and Strikes - July 16, 2010
This Angels team is boring!
When Vlad was at his worst, his swing was (and still is) the most exciting in baseball. Just look at our current alternative.
When Figgy was getting thrown out stealing most of the time, he was busting his ass on both sides of the ball and was making highlight plays that inspired the rest of the team. Who is our equivelant today?
When our horse faced ace Lackey was dealing, we had someone with fire and passion (all be it, a little bitchy at times) on the mound. Someone who actually let the crowd and his team mates see that he cared about winning and losing. Tell me, who is our that pitcher today?
Fuentes is no Frankie. Go ahead and light me up on this one, but I’ll take Frankie over our current puss throwing closer.
All I am saying is that minus the Frankie thing, last year we were a better and far more exciting/confident team.
This years Angels are boring and without swagger, something Halos teams in the past had more of. Hmmmmmmm, I wonder what’s missing? And don’t tell me it’s my brain.
Dono Romantico - July 16, 2010
List of things this season that were boring:
1. 3-run homeruns by Napoli and kmo
2. Clutch hits by Torii
3. Brandon wood grand slam
4. Sweeping the dodgers twice
5. Losing our star hitter and still remaining in contention after the break
6. Watching weaver start
7. In spite of all our issues still confident enough to win the AL west for the 4th time. (and i know we will).
Yeah, it’s your brain that’s missing. And by the sound of it, you didn’t lose much.
RexTookMyStash - July 16, 2010

Balls and Strikes - July 16, 2010 via mobile
we didn't sweep the Dodgers twice
the last game was forfeited to the Dodgers once Scioscia named Kazmir the starting pitcher
2pintsofbooze - July 16, 2010
Yet somehow Kazmir
won his road start on Saturday of the freeway series. Dodger forfeit?
blast21dave - July 16, 2010
I believe you have your sarcasm confused with your enthusiasm
Dono Romantico - July 16, 2010
I have to admit that when I saw the Angels' line up last night I was bummed.
No Napoli meant no real long ball threat other than Torii—sorry Juan, Bobby and Hideki, you don’t scare anyone anymore—and three automatic rally killer outs at the bottom of the order. Nice game by the three stooges but honestly, how many games are the Angels going to win with Franderson, Mathis and McNaulty taking up 9+ at bats.
Halo84653 - July 16, 2010
Between 83 and 112
That’s my professional sabermetric projection.
