Model franchise: Owner takes Angels to heavenly heights - USATODAY.com
The big picture: In 2002, the World Series championship year and the last year of the Disney regime, the team drew 2.3 million fans, sold about 14,000 season tickets, generated about $100 million in revenue and, according to Moreno, lost about $20 million. Small-market numbers, essentially. In 2009, the Angels drew 3.24 million fans, attracting more than 3 million customers for the seventh consecutive season, sold about 26,000 season tickets, generated about $230 million in revenue and, according to Moreno, made a profit for the fifth consecutive season. Also, the team won the AL West for the fifth time in six years. Major-market numbers.
Yeah, but what have you done for me lately? Just kidding, the Angels are one of, if not the best organization in all of professional sports. What's going to be interesting is what will the organization do if this season is the end of their A.L. dominance. How will they respond to not winning? And just as importantly, how will the fans respond? There a Angels fans who have never rooted for a losing team. How will they react if the Angels are not able to catch the Rangers?
All-Star game in Southland is the ultimate home game for all of baseball - latimes.com
"This place just goes on and on, don't it?" says Gerald Pickens, a local coaching icon sitting in the dank dugout of Jackie Robinson Stadium at Gonzales Park in Compton. "Baseball is what this town breathes." Pickens, who has helped send more than 35 players to the major leagues, was discussing baseball's midsummer celebration, the game returning to its Southland Mecca for tonight's All-Star game at Angel Stadium. "Oh yeah, that reminds me, I've got to call my man Dennis," he says. Standing amid piles of old caps and rusted equipment, Pickens punches speed dial and begins talking and laughing with the most unlikely of soul mates. His man Dennis, it turns out, is Dennis Kuhl, chairman of the Angels.

George Steinbrenner, New York Yankees owner, dies at age 80 - ESPN New York
Longtime New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning, his family confirmed in a statement. "It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80, the family said in a statement.
Sad news for all of sports.

Despite renovations, Angel Stadium divine for All-Star players - USATODAY.com
The fourth oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball, it will become the seventh to hold the All-Star Game three times. And the 44-year-old stadium, built on 140 acres of farmland, has a distinction all its own that explains its longevity: It's the first to host three All-Star Games in three different configurations.
The fourth oldest ballpark. Amazing.
Vermin Should be Gone for All Star Game - Food Safety News
Angel Stadium came in for some bad publicity three years when it encountered a "vermin infestation." Therefore it is not surprising that Orange County's food inspectors are on the lookout for vermin--and they found some just last Tuesday (June 29) in a couple of View Level (428 and 429V) concession areas. But those critters were taken out, and the over all inspection record for the 45-year-old Angel Stadium is not really that bad.
The fourth oldest ballpark. Gross.
Yesterday and Futures - The Baseball Analysts
While Hank Conger (Angels, Salt Lake, Triple-A), a first-round draft pick out of Huntington Beach High School (Orange County, CA) in 2006 who Joe referred to as a switch-hitting Mike Napoli, slugged a three-run home run in the fifth inning to earn Most Valuable Player honors, future teammate Mike Trout stole the show in the eyes of the scouts yesterday afternoon. Trout, who won't turn 19 until next month, was not only the youngest player on the field but the most impressive.
Another Trout rainbow story (see what I did there? Yeah I know, not good)
Negotiator in Rangers' bankruptcy case being threatened - Dallas Morning News
Frustrated fans have apparently decided to target the negotiator appointed to work out a deal to lift the Rangers out of Chapter 11. William K. Snyder, 51, has suggested that the bidding be reopened at a new auction. Security at the courthouse was stepped up after Snyder received threatening phone calls, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Michael Lynn said Monday.
Seriously? Why are Ranger fans pissed off at this guy? Oh wait, I forgot...Ranger fans. I get it now. Stay classy Texas.

July 13 - BR Bullpen
Events, births and deaths that occurred on July 13.
1922 - The smallest crowd in Fenway Park history - just 68 fans - see the Browns' Herman Pillette shut out the Red Sox, 2 - 0. Alex Ferguson takes the loss.
1971 - In a game which features six home runs, including Reggie Jackson's crushing a Dock Ellis fourth inning pitch off the power generator located on the Tiger Stadium right-field roof 520 feet from home plate, the American League beats the National League, 6 - 4 in All-Star action. All the players who homer - Johnny Bench, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Frank Robinson, Harmon Killebrew as well as Reggie - will become members of the Hall of Fame. It is the only AL All-Star victory between 1962 and 1983.
1979 - California's Nolan Ryan and Boston's Steve Renko (with one-out help from Bill Campbell) each lose no-hitters in the 9th inning, and each settle for one-hit victories: 6 - 1 over New York, and 2 - 0 over Oakland, respectively. Rickey Henderson has the one-out hit off Renko.
1985 - The Angels get three pinch hits in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Blue Jays, 4 - 3. Darrell Miller, Mike Brown and Bob Boone all deliver singles to give Mike Witt the complete game win.
2000 - The Dodgers edge the Angels, 4 - 3, in 10 innings but not before California executes an unusual play. After the Dodgers' Adrian Beltre triples off the newly-renovated RF fence in the bottom of the 10th, the Angels move LF Darin Erstad to the infield to prevent the run scoring. Erstad, playing at about 2B, throws out Kevin Elster for an OF assist. Jim Leyritz then singles in the run.

Tonight's ASG better be a great game on the field
otherwise, all that will be ever talked about is Red Sox big papi winning the HR Derby and tributes to a Yankees announcer and their late owner. Let’s hope the national league wins so that a skank doesn’t win the MVP award and we don’t get to hear more about the skanks players winning the game for their dead owner.
Maybe a brief classy statement from Arte before the game should be enough.
Dono Romantico - July 13, 2010
Couldn't agree more about SoCal being the soul of baseball
I’ve noticed increasingly over the years that a huge number of homegrown talent in the Majors comes from our region. In fact, if you take SoCal out of the picture, the MLB would be largely a league of foreign born talent. What other region had a minor league that was so good and popular it was called the Third Major League?? If you grew up here, you probably grew up playing little league or PONY league baseball. For all the talk of New York, I would definitely agree that SoCal is the TRUE soul of baseball.
firebird81 - July 13, 2010
Yup
And I guess Florida is 2nd. Our team is almost entirely comprised of Californians, Floridians, and foreigners.
Rally Manatee - July 13, 2010
Dude. SoCal is the soul of American Athletics. Baseball is but one part of that.

Steinbrenner
I’m guessing that Tori Hunter could go out and hit 4 grand slams and I bet that MLB and Fox will still find a way to give the ASG MVP to Derek Jeter tonight to honor Steinbrenner. Almost makes me want go and spend $300 on stubhub for tickets tonight just so I don’t have to listen to crappy Tim McCarver wax poetic all night long with tears in his eyes about how wonderful Steinbrenner was and how great the Yankees are. This night should celebrate the Angels. Sadly, we’re overshadowed again by the hated ones from NY.

Georgy
The Boss took control of a franchise and realized that:
But he was sitting on the number one revenue market for media in all of baseball. So he had what was, essentially, the worst house on the best block.
Sitting on top of a cash cow gave Steinbrenner is path to glory. He didn’t need to build a damned thing, after all.
Steinbrenner, basically, changed the game of baseball forever. He moved the competitive leveraging power that previously had defined one team from the next away from organizational and development skills, and parked it squarely on top of revenue streams. If your team did not have the revenue stream to compete with George’s revenue stream, tough shit for you.
Att the end of the day, George didn’t need to create anything other than an economic feedback loop. Revenue enables acquisition of the best of what everybody else created which, when concentrated, breeds success on the field, which breeds more revenue, which breeds more ability to acquire the best of waht everybody else has done, which breeds more success on the field. Over and over and over. Larger and larger and larger. He with the greatest revenue base wins. As long as MLB didn’t move every team to New York, that was gonna be George.
Stirrups - July 13, 2010
with that said
I have much more respect for what the Yankees did prior to George Steinbrenner ownership.

i know this is horrible and downright mean spirited and rude but did anyone else think “Wow, the Yankees found a way to overshadow the Angels again”?
I am so sorry, as much as I hate the Yankees, you got to admire Big George’s investment look up how much he bought the Yankees for, and how much it is worth now – isn’t that what a baseball team is (I’m looking at you Peter Angelos). R.I.P. and thank you for telling baseball “F NO” to having the Spiderman logo on the bases to promote Spiderman 2.

i was absolutely shocked when i saw the news. as much as people hated him, ya gotta respect the man. he did what he could to help the team win. as much as we hate the YES network, we all wish we had our own.

Steinbrenner probably died last week but they waited for the All-Star Game to

2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
Not cool, bro
I’ve hated the Yankees since I was old enough to remember, and I’m probably one of the biggest jackasses here when it comes to heckling rival teams, but there is a limit of decency and respect. Even in ancient times, armies would allow their enemies to collect and mourn the dead before going back to battle…and that was when each side was supposed to kill each other. This is just sports. Ripping Steinbrenner and the Yankees on the day he died is just as low as the assholes who continue to rip Adenhart to this day on LL or LSB or wherever else.
Leave the Yankees in peace and return to fight them another day.

Sat behind Dennis Kuhl at the HR Derby last night
A couple of scouts asked him about it. He laughed it off but would not discuss it. MC is really expensive. When he was signed, no one expected the Tigers to see that contract through. $19M is a lot for any player, especially in this economy. He is signed through 2015.

Why in the world would they want to shed payroll?
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
And take it back on by adding Kazmir?
Epic Dean - July 13, 2010
I think it is purely financial
Detroit committed money a few years back they can no longer afford. The economy (especially in MI) and Detroit’s forward thinking has changed since 07-08. Also, the Halos will most likely have to pick up some of Kaz’s salary. The trade offer may have been made a couple weeks ago when it did not sound as ridiculous. Kaz was reeling off a few in a row and Napoli was hot (er).

IF (big IF) they traded Cabrera they would want the best prospects in our system and the cheapest/best young MLB talent we have. not a catcher who cant hit with men on and makes $4 mil a season, a pitcher who just set an Angels record for most runs given up in a start and is owed almost what Cabrera will make, and a 3rd basemen who has been the biggest bust in the majors this season (IMO).

The Limey - July 13, 2010
dude...
listen, stein is/was great for NY. his way of running business though is going to ruin baseball because at some point there will be great franchises such as pitt., kc, oak., etc that cannot operate and compete at the same time and will have to fold up at the rate NYY pays for the free agents they take from those teams. you really can’t get it in your head that there are a lot of people in this world that don’t think much of him. to me he has taken baseball and made it really unfair for the rest of the teams, except for a few big market teams. as angels fans we are lucky the owner at least tries to get some free agents but every year we are rumored to be going after a player the yankees are right there most of the time outbidding us and every other team. IMO, i would find it hard to root for a team like that. a team who’s INFIELD salary is more than that of some entire teams payroll is a joke. it’s a sad day for yankee fans but don’t think the rest of the world should feel the same.

I’ve always felt we were a cut above LSB and LL in regards to our membership and the way we carry ourselves as fans, and I still do, it’s just sad to me to see someone attacked in such a manner.
RexTookMyStash - July 13, 2010
This
While Steinbrenner wasn’t the greatest in my opinion, it’s still a huge loss that he died. When someone that influential passes away, you have to have respect.
Seriously guys, people over at Pinstripe Alley or other SBN blogs usually don’t be dicks with things like Nick or Kendry’s Ankle [Excluding LL/LSB]. We get angry when other blogs write shit about what happened to us recently, we shouldn’t be writing shit about when something like this happens to them.
TheKingfish - July 13, 2010
Agreed
I may not like them but he did for the Yanks what we all hope Arte does for the Angels, bring in the best players to provide the best team and fly more flags
Epic Dean - July 13, 2010
Too Soon?
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010

the whole bitchfest of “wahhh our event is overshadowed by the yankees” just reeks of some peoples inferiority complex.
clover_black - July 13, 2010
You don't need to know the 10 Commandments to know you're being a dick.
Commander_Nate - July 13, 2010
Thou shall not be a dick
I think it’s the 11th commandment. There was a stone table addendum released shortly after Moses retired and hung up his sandals.
RexTookMyStash - July 13, 2010
That commandment was probably on the slab
Moses dropped when he was coming down the mountain

PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010

But thank you for clarifying
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
Just a reminder
No one likes you. Not even your parents.
They said they hate they way you laugh and the way you look in tight pants.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
Probably had something to do with Lee stinkin it up in his 1st game
Epic Dean - July 13, 2010
and the 4 game sweep by...
…the ORIOLES
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
Ouch
Then again, we haven’t really been playing that sparkling either lately.
TheKingfish - July 13, 2010
I don't care
it was the Orioles.
let me have my minor victories, even if they are insignificant
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
Says the team that is still 4.5 games back
After we are swept by the Orioles, let’s not go back to your shining display against the Royals at home
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
Says the team that just sued itself and ruined its future by trading in the division.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
How did we ruin our future?
By trading Lyle Overbay and a back of the rotation pitcher?
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
Oh, I must have missed that extension you signed with Lee
How long was it for? Can you link me?
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
Who cares about the extension...
We get two draft picks for him when he signs for the Yankees and we get to ride him through the playoffs, if we do in fact make them.
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
you're right
in 6 years when those draft picks finally make it to the bigs, you can come back here and say “haha”
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
Funny how Justin Smoak the Mariner is the next Lyle Overbay, but Justin Smoak the Ranger was the next Mark Teixeira
~MMP~ - July 13, 2010
Nevermind the fact he is projected to be Tex 2.1
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
Never felt that way
Always really liked Smoak, but never felt like he would have that kind of power. Always saw him as a .310/18 HR/80 RBI type
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
Which is still great, just not Tex like.
The Mariners got a really nice player and I do feel like he could come back to bite us in the future. He will probably double everyone to death in about 2 years.
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010

ryanfea - July 13, 2010
I don't believe in permanent bans...
but since I’m a “cocksmoke”, you could change my mind.
WiHaloFan - July 13, 2010
Maybe not as "cock smoky" as I originally thought
However, still don’t believe I should have been banned the first time.
A little S-talk never hurt anyone.
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
I was banned from LSB a long time ago, and guess what, I don't even care.
44FAN - July 13, 2010
If you have something to contribute, you're welcome here
Otherwise…
WiHaloFan - July 13, 2010
Let's have an AL West conversation then
I’m totally reasonable. Not trying to flame. In fact, I would like it if SBN sites weren’t totally team centric and could actually have conversation between clubs without everyone freaking out and breaking out the ban sticks.
Brandon Wood, what’s his deal? Now go.
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
He sucks.
TheKingfish - July 13, 2010
Still holding out hope.
But alas, I fear he may suck.

RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
For the Padres. Nice trade.
XYZ123 - July 13, 2010
who'd they get for A-Gon?
I can’t remember
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka
~MMP~ - July 13, 2010
seriously???
yikes
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
Yeah
It was really, really terrible.
In our defense, A-Gon hadn’t come into his own yet. That was just a shitty trade, nothing you can do about it. It was in 2005, however, so who cares at this point.
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
The Rangers have done many stupid things.
It’s one of the reasons the Angels have finished ahead of the Rangers EVERY year for TEN consecutive seasons.
XYZ123 - July 13, 2010
the angels haven't done stupid things
i remember steve finley raking it in so so much
Halos in DE - July 13, 2010
No question. The Angels have made mistakes.
But the positives outweigh the negatives.
For example: averaging 94.5 wins a year for six seasons (2004-2009) and winning a World Series.
XYZ123 - July 13, 2010
I don't think anyone is saying anything bad...
about what the Angels have done the last 10 years. I’ve watched it, every year, every single effing year, I get it.
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
you'll always have Gary Mathews to throw in our face

XYZ123 - July 13, 2010
Jon Hart was a terrible, terrible GM
Jon Daniels has been a very, very good GM. We have a totally different front office now, which is translating on the field. The 2005 Rangers were a hot pile.
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
its cool though
its not like A-Gon would’ve done much in Arlington, San Diego’s park is much better suited for power hitters.
wait, what????
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
The Rangers also gave up Chris Young
Who was an excellent starter for the Padres in 2006 and 2007.
XYZ123 - July 13, 2010
i stood up for him
thinking he would be like kendry (with consistent playing time he would be sweeet), but nope. epic fail.
Halos in DE - July 13, 2010
o and congrats on lee
Halos in DE - July 13, 2010
I will admit this
That as much as I hate the Angels (and A’s and Mariners for that matter) I do root for them in the playoffs over anyone but the Rays.
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
honestly
I feel the same way. kind of funny how fans of non-AL East teams love the Rays if their team is out. if the rays are out and its between the Rangers and the Yanks/Sox, I’ll be pulling for the Rangers. not only have they never won it all, but they’ve got Vladdy, who brought us an MVP.
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
Vladdy, DO, Bengie
Yeah, I’ll pull for the West if the Angels get out early
TheKingfish - July 13, 2010
I'm still convinced
the AL West is won through Vlad’s mom’s cooking.
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
We should've kept him
If only for his mom’s cooking
TheKingfish - July 13, 2010
true
the amount of money Vlad wanted and the amount we were offering could have easily been offset by the money saved on catering.
Reagins should’ve thought of this
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
+1
Halos in DE - July 13, 2010
You can have Bengie if you want him
We are like 3-40 since we traded a really nice prospect for him
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
We can actually finish Sosh's Fatty Lineup?
TheKingfish - July 13, 2010
Gerald Laird could be had in a trade as well
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010

RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
kinda like Lackey
but without the grandpa
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
That is a very valid point that I overlooked
hauldog - July 13, 2010
sorry
but we already have 13 catchers on our 25 man roster, and after Conger’s MVP performance, we’re about to have 14. gotta leave room for Macanulty.
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
We feel sorry for a fan of a team
that loses ground to an angel team consisting of corey aldridge and paul macancheeseburger.
clover_black - July 13, 2010
Haha fair enough...
RangerFloppy - July 13, 2010
its Mr. Macancheeseburger to you!!!!
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
We need to incorporate the DoubleDown into his name
TheKingfish - July 13, 2010
Hey everyone
What RexTookMyStash said is exactly what I was thinking. I don’t mean to speak for the entire Pinstripe Alley community, but I just wanted to explain what happened. Apparently most of our users are coming here either to talk baseball or something and they are getting banned. The users are frustrated. I am in no way saying they did nothing wrong or did not deserve to be banned. Just saying that’s the situation. Today they saw a joke (that they perceived differently) and got offended by it.
You have to at least understand them not liking it. I try to encourage the users to go to other sites without complaining about anything or trying to make it their way. The Yankees lost their beloved PA announcer and their owner in a span of three days. That’s pretty sad. You can imagine that the fans would be upset right? Seeing jokes just made them feel worse.
I’m not arguing whether or not George was good for baseball. I’m arguing that when someone dies it is a sad thing and should not be joked about. That’s why everyone was complaining here. Sorry for the disturbance and have a good day.
Brandon C. - July 13, 2010
Dont push your sadness on me, IDGAF
I honestly dont care if your owner died. In no way does it affect me. Call me heartless or whatever but I refuse to let some old cranky owner who basically created the steroid era, ruined free agency, and tried to personally ruin careers of players he didnt want to pay money to. Remember that whole Dave Winfield thing?
Yeah classy guy. Im going to totally mourn his death..
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
You're a douchebag...
I wonder what you do for a living
Chris McKeown - July 13, 2010
Im a douchebag because I dont care that your selfish, famemongering, baseball ruining owner died?
Wow, I am a bad person. Send me an email when another person I dont care about dies so I can continue not giving a fuck.
Also, I am a high school therapist and work at a suicide prevention hotline in my free time.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
for not giving a F about people you don't care about dying
you sure make use of your free time in an unusual way
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
I dont care about people who do the same shit that George did to other people.
He treated people like tools or just complete shit because he could. That man deserves or commands no respect for me.
And I was obviously lying about my profession. Im actually a full time wet-nurse.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
touche'
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
I think you are still lying about your profession.
Admit it; you’ve been selling counterfeit whoopee cushions to gullible eastern Europeans.

Sorry to push our sadness on you. I find death itself sad almost no matter who the person is, but if you do not feel that way i’m sorry for not understanding that in the first place
Brandon C. - July 13, 2010
created the steriod era?
i thought that was the a’s or the rangers (j/k).
Halos in DE - July 13, 2010
The contracts he handed out for power numbers basically created the need for steriod use to land those big contracts.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
.... LOL
Chris McKeown - July 13, 2010 via mobile
you're right
and the fact that we’ve had to endure the same shit from LSB regarding Adenhart does not make it right.
tip of the hat
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
The difference is we didnt go on other boards and be like WAHHHH DONT MAKE ADENHART JOKES WAHHHH
because other boards did.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
Uh, we have done that
TheKingfish - July 13, 2010
I didn't
no one should force their emotions or beliefs on others.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
Like I said
didn’t say what the users did was right. Just said you have to understand their being upset
Brandon C. - July 13, 2010
ok
I get that you’re a hardass mofo, but I’m willing to show some sympathy, even if you aren’t.
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
Um...everytime Adenhart is peeped somewhere else...
Someone here notices and we go carpet bomb that place. Same kinda applies to Kendry and his ankle.
Commander_Nate - July 13, 2010
Sorry for the Adenhart situation
I can honestly not believe people would do that
Brandon C. - July 13, 2010
they do, and often
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
That's terrible
Brandon C. - July 13, 2010
Agreed that it is sad and heartbreaking especially for the Yankee organization
The only thing that bugged me was that HH is being singled out as if we’re evil and the only people who would make such a joke. It is understandable that you would be offended by the joke. However, it wasn’t neccessary for the “Melkman” to fight us about it.
ryanfea - July 13, 2010
Didn't say it was necessary
For whatever reason you guys got the title of Yankees haters. Not saying it’s true or not, just saying that’s why they (not saying rightfully or wrong) singled this blog out
Brandon C. - July 13, 2010
its probably because of the Halos' dominance of the Yanks during the Scioscia era...until the ALCS of course
2pintsofbooze - July 13, 2010
"Yankee Haters"
Sure we are, but you can easily say the same for 90% of all of the other baseball fans out there. Seriously, you guys should be used to it by now.
The_Power_and_the_Glory_of_Robert_Horry - July 13, 2010

where he got Patrick Dempsey sick with a deadly virus, who in turn infected a small CA town, only to be saved from a nuclear bomb by Dustin Hoffman and Cuba.
he’s sensitive about that period in his life

hey Enforcer, what do you think about the Angels?

XYZ123 - July 13, 2010
I'm sorry to see that this site has stooped to the level that it has
It’s okay to dislike Steinbrenner, but when someone dies, it is utterly disrespectful to speak hatred to the deceased. I hate to make the assumption that all Angels fans are like this, but some of you are scum – no other word for it.
Thank you
jramey - July 13, 2010
Yes, all angel fans are like this.
It has nothing to do with being a message board on the fucking internet.
go light yourself on fire.
clover_black - July 13, 2010
get out of here
I happen to agree with what PhiSlamma said about what he did to baseball but most of us have respect for the dead.
angelsown3417 - July 13, 2010 via mobile
So when someone like Hitler dies we HAVE TO cry and mourn his loss?
No. No we don’t. The actions of the person directly relate the the amount of respect the person gets when they pass.
Is George Hitler? No.
Was he banned from baseball for being baseball Hitler? Yes.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
Hitler >∞ Steinbrenner in terms of negative impact on history
Let’s be real here.
Commander_Nate - July 13, 2010
Its taking a point of view to an extreme to demonstrate its value.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
It's an extreme extreme then
And honestly, one that doesn’t have any merit.
Commander_Nate - July 13, 2010
I feel the statement of "HE WAS IMPORTANT AND HE DIED SO YOU SHOULD BE SAD"
which I feel isnt a compelling statement. The best way to show that you do not have to mourn EVERY DEATH is by referencing one of the most evil people alive. There is a grey area here, and I can reserve my right to not care about a piece of shit person dying.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
It's not even that dude, it's just embarrassing and tasteless
I came here this morning after a long weekend at the Fanfest and HR Derby feeling pretty high on life, the Angels and baseball in general and stoked to watch us host one of the sport’s biggest events on TV tonight. Then, I discover this news about Steinbrenner and go over to Pinstripe Alley to read about it. Then, I discover HH is the only site being mentioned over there for being disrespectful, etc. Turns out, they were right on at PSA about some of the comments made here.
I found this funny in a sad sort of way because HH is mentioned in the friggin’ All Star Game Program that tens of thousands of people get to read. Coupled with things like that and this week’s events, this site is probably going to be getting more attention than normal. On top of that, Rev and others here constantly say that we are as good or better than the print media and other sites like LL and LSB that routinely joke about Adenhart and whatever else they want.
Anyone visiting HH for the first time today to check out how we cover our Angels hosting the All-Star events is going to find a thread half-full of jokes and insults about a man who just died this morning. I know this is only my first season on this site, but personally I think that’s a little embarrassing and ironic considering the position HH has in the blogosphere and what our team went through last year.
I’m no fan of the Yankees or GS, but he didn’t do anything to me personally and he certainly isn’t comparable to a genocidal dictator.

My point may have missed the mark
However I dont see why not mourning someone with the history of Steinbrenner is embarrassing and tasteless.
Adenhart was just some kid pitcher who died way short of his potential. Steinbrenner died at 80 and was a known dick, lier, and bully.
Im not sure why I, or anyone else here, should feel the need to think this is actually some sort of loss.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
You don't have to feel sad, you just don't need to celebrate it either
Which some of what went on here could be construed as.
Commander_Nate - July 13, 2010
I think your confusing the situation.
There are some people on here that have said alot of politically incorrect and insensitive things. Then there are folks like myself, that while maybe not being up to the standards of compassion and sincerity that posters on PSA would like, feel that while George’s passing was unfortunate, lets be honest, he wasn’t the patron saint of MLB that many are making him out to be, but a person that was willing to win at any cost, and steal away other teams players knowing they had no financial ability to counter any offer given by the Yanks. A guy that would set the payroll bar so high, that only the skanks, sux and a few Saudi princes could contend with. Again, sorry for your loss. But a saint amongst men, don’t think so.
halofolife - July 13, 2010
He wasn't a saint
he definitely wasn’t liked by many, but I think it’s stupid not to have respect for the guy. Baseball is NEVER going to have another owner who cares as much about his team, and cares as much about winning, as George Steinbrenner did. He cared about winning so much that he did some things in the 1980s that weren’t good for the team. He made mistakes, but he also did some great things for the sport. He changed the game of baseball. Small market teams get money from George Steinbrenner’s wallet. And he has to get some credit for being the most successful owner in the history of sports.
He may not have been well liked, but I do think he is and should be respected by anybody who is a fan of baseball.
nyyrocks29 - July 13, 2010
He got banned from baseball? Remember?
On July 30, 1990, Commissioner Fay Vincent banned Steinbrenner from baseball for life after he paid Howie Spira, a small-time gambler, $40,000 for “dirt” after Winfield sued him for failing to pay his foundation the $300,00016 guaranteed in his contract. Winfield later entered the Hall of Fame as a San Diego Padre.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
I never said he didn't make mistakes
but at least he never ran away from his mistakes when he made them.
The point I’m trying to make is, whatever his faults are, he always tried to do whatever is best for his baseball team. How can any baseball fan not respect that?
nyyrocks29 - July 13, 2010
I never said Hitler didn't make mistakes
but at least he never ran from his mistakes when he made them. (Russia, bad call man)
The point I’m trying to make is, whatever his faults are, he always tried to do whatever is best for Germany. How can any citizen of a country not respect that?
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
if you're seriously comparing George Steinbrenner to Hitler
then I have nothing more to say to you. Just realize that you are in the minority with your belief.
nyyrocks29 - July 13, 2010
He isnt Hitler
But he was bad for baseball, banned from it.
He treated people like absolute shit.
Why should I mourn his loss? To me its good for baseball and good for everyone in that organization that he is no longer around to treat people like his personal toys and throw around money with no regard to what it does to the sport.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
You dont have mourn his loss, but you should be respectful.
TheMelkman - July 13, 2010
Why?
He wasn’t respectful of the people in his life, why should I be respectful of him in his death?
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
fine
don’t be respectful. But don’t continue trashing him on the day of his death. If you don’t want to be respectful to him, fine. But don’t be disrespectful either.
nyyrocks29 - July 13, 2010
Why not?
How long should I wait to bring up all the negative things that he decided to do to people to get ahead in life?
Give me a time table of which someone’s awful actions can be brought to light and talked about, because, really, its all about all you guys in New York.
Oh wait, no its not, fuck off.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
Wow I'm told to "fuck off" because I'm trying to respectfully defend a guy that just died
WTF is that about? It’s not like I’m trolling or anything.
And that guy also happens to be one of the best owners in sports history. Fine whatever. Any fan who knows baseball would want to have George Steinbrenner as their owner, because of what he does to help his team win. You obviously don’t believe that and there’s no point trying to convince you.
nyyrocks29 - July 13, 2010
Good call.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
But that is the problem, dude.
George did not compete in baseball. He used baseball as the measure by which he competed at the bank. Good for the bank, bad for baseball. Except for Yankee fans and baseball players, only George benefitted. That does NOT make him “one of the best owners in sports history”. Most infamous? Yeah, probably.
Stirrups - July 13, 2010
I'm getting a subtle feeling you weren't a big fan of George.

When you try and ruin someones career to avoid giving MONEY TO CHARITY
then yeah, you can count him out of my Will.
PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
Killing yourself in a bunker while your most loyal followers defend your crumbling "Reich" and "Master Race"
Yeah, that’s really owning up to your mistakes.
Do you really want me to argue the last point too?
Commander_Nate - July 13, 2010
HIlarious.
This thread is in the tank ever since the hitler reference.
When in doubt, throw up a hitler comparison and troll for responses.

What's that law called?
Commander_Nate - July 13, 2010
Godwin. Debate over.

Does this mean Ann Margaret is not coming?
RexTookMyStash - July 13, 2010
Full Metal Jacket FTW!

Rev Halofan - July 13, 2010

PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010

PhiSlamma - July 13, 2010
It's up to you Rev.
