Final Score in Anaheim: Rangers 1, Angels 2

Two Angels scored from 1B on doubles but no Rangers scored on passed ball opportunities handed to them on a silver platter and Jered Weaver's 7-inning 2-hitter was a Tube Steak Boogie to his 8th win.
Brian Fuentes pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning for the Save after Fernando Rodney threw 34 pitches in a wild 8th inning that saw the Rangers score a runs and load the bases, but Ranger Boy himself, Michael Young was too cowardly to try to score from 3B on a high wild pitch. Choooooke!
The umpires conspired along with MLB's cakewalk interleague schedule for the Rangers by calling a vicinity play safe on a relay throw to Howie Kendrick at 2B. It did not cost the Angels in the end... in fact with an IBB to Josh Hamilton following the suspiciously conspiratorial call, the Angels ended Tattoo McCrackhead's hitting streak at 23 games. Boo Hoo.

MLB owns the Rangers
The Rangers are up for auction on 7/16
MLB has to keep the value of their product up. To cause interest in their product. So to make the most profit possible. To make sure the new owners can take control of the team before the trading deadline, and then the Rangers will be able to acquire Cliff Lee in a trade.

opiejeanne - July 1, 2010
Rodney didn't really get any outs
he just somehow survived the 8th without blowing the game and giving me an aneurysm.
RexTookMyStash - July 1, 2010
Did they take him out for another pitcher?

Just the losses and blown plays.

Kind a of generalization though.

I know.
One of the playoff game losses I thought really wasn’t his fault. There was an error that should have been an out and the umps were squeezing him.
And I thought the weather was so nasty in New York it was ridiculous to even play.

“The Angels seem to have down to a science what other organizations just can’t figure out: how to build and develop a team that ends up greater than the sum of its parts. It’s one of baseball’s holy grails, and a little team in southern California is a step ahead of the pack.”
Right on Jeff, I’m not that mad at you anymore for calling me stupid at LL a few weeks ago.

Rangers are the lucky ones this year
Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz having career years, Vlad having his best season since 2005, striking gold with Colby Lewis, C.J. Wilson finding success (and plenty of luck) as a starter after not starting a single MLB game since 2005, and Michael Young somehow not being the stone glove that he usually is in the field.
Other than Harden, lot’s of luck on the Rangers side so far this year.

C.J. Wilson apparently isn't impressed by the Angels
Unimpressed, however, was C.J. Wilson, the southpaw who was tagged with the loss, falling to 6-4, after surrendering a pair of runs in 5 2/3 innings.
“We’re a better team — 100 percent,” Wilson said. "When we play up to our capabilities, it might not be that close.
“We have a better balance to our team. They have good pitching, but their offense is like, I don’t know. We have more wins. It’s pretty simple. I’d rather take our offense. I’d rather take our defense. I’d much rather have our bullpen.”

That Ranger bullpen won't be so great come August and September if they have to keep using it so much
Other than Colby Lewis, the rest of their rotation is very uninspiring. C.J. Wilson has been the beneficiary of a low BABIP and a low HR/FB ratio. I guess one can argue that he can continue to maintain that low BABIP with the Rangers defense, but he needs to walk less people if he hopes to maintain that low ERA. Also let’s see how that bullpen holds up later in the season.
stolenbases - July 2, 2010
On that note
Oliver is 39 and has pitched 36 Innings already
O’day has pitched 31 innings already.
Our go to guy Jepsen has pitched 27 Innings thus far.
Shields has 26 IP’s, and Rodney 31.
The rangers bullpen has pitched 247.1 Innings this season so far which leads the AL, and is 7th in baseball. You have to wonder how much gas those guys are going to have left come September.
RexTookMyStash - July 2, 2010
Speaking of low BABIP
Look at Colby Lewis’ – combined with his BAA. Then check his game logs.
His FIP certainly benefits from lots and lots of innings pitched against bad offenses. I doubt he looks anywhere near as good after some strong hitting teams work him over. I was hoping we’d see him this last series.

Kudos to the home crowd…
Usually they take off at 9:30PM, but they stuck it out for this one. Last night, in a two-run game, there was a mass exodus at 9:30. Tonight, no such luck for the Rangers nor my post-game parking lot exit plans.
Downing Rules - July 2, 2010
Not in our section
We were in 305, taking advantage of the half-price deal to see how the other half lives, and a lot of them were gone before the ninth.
BTW, did you notice the increased security tonight? It was a pain getting into the park. I guess they’re ramping up for the ASG.
rspencer - July 2, 2010
No, security seemed the same to me and I have been to 19 games this year...
Strange.
However, I am miffed at the RV lot now being closed off to cash-paying customers. That was the sweetest lot for a quick parking lot exit. It’s only available for busses and people with pre-paid coupons. The sign on that lot always said “pre-paid coupons only,” but it was a secret that any joe blow could park in there. Bummer.
Downing Rules - July 2, 2010
Rev, I'm going to have to ask you to please ban...
…the 3 people out of 123 who have voted so far…who picked someone other than Weav as the panther.

Sorry, 3 out of 180.
RedFog - July 2, 2010
Weaver did a great job tonight
But I would have liked to see Fuentes up for panther vote too (kinda just splitting hairs). He’s silently coming back to respectability; it’s good to see that.
I actually got out to the game tonight. Crowd was great, and the T-shirt is actually a good giveaway. The umps can suck a fat one. Inconsistent strike zone and completely botching that call at 2nd have no excuses. If we go by the letter of the law here instead of playing the “vicinity” unwritten rule, then Kinsler should have still been called out for sliding completely through the bag to take out our player. The vicinity is allowed because the sliding to break up the DP is allowed. My brother is a professional umpire and explained this further to me just for clarification. Pisses me off.
But yeah, should be some exciting baseball down the stretch with these two teams.
linkbruin - July 2, 2010
