Jered Weaver Stomps a Texas 2-Step 2-Hitter

Final Score in Anaheim: Rangers 1, Angels 2

Star-divide

Two Angels scored from 1B on doubles but no Rangers scored on passed ball opportunities handed to them on a silver platter and Jered Weaver's 7-inning 2-hitter was a Tube Steak Boogie to his 8th win.

Brian Fuentes pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning for the Save after Fernando Rodney threw 34 pitches in a wild 8th inning that saw the Rangers score a runs and load the bases, but Ranger Boy himself, Michael Young was too cowardly to try to score from 3B on a high wild pitch. Choooooke!

The umpires conspired along with MLB's cakewalk interleague schedule for the Rangers by calling a vicinity play safe on a relay throw to Howie Kendrick at 2B. It did not cost the Angels in the end... in fact with an IBB to Josh Hamilton following the suspiciously conspiratorial call, the Angels ended Tattoo McCrackhead's hitting streak at 23 games. Boo Hoo.

Jose just had a great line

We love you, Vladdy, but now please go away.

Weaver is an Ace

Enough said.

Does that mean that WTY is so getting laid?
Get rhythm, when you play the Blue!

Get rhythm!

Whoever voted for Napoli is one of those drunk blonde chicks who spill their drinks at the Yardhouse
who the hell is our closer????

also, tattoo mccracken…hilarious.

That umpiring was pretty crappy

The strike zone was all over the place, especially that pitch from Rodney right down the middle to Andrus.

Funny, usually umpires are decidedly consistent
My sarcasm meter just pegged.
Ooohhhh. A sarcasm meter. Now *THERE'S* a real useful invention.
I liked the "sarchasm" picture the other day...
I didn't

it was at my expense.

Jokes at my expense are never funny, and when you tell one, a puppy gets a cold.

So thanks everyone who’s made fun of me. The snot of those puppies is on your hands.

Yeah

Watchingthe game I saw a lot of strikes for the rangers that were called balls for us.

MLB owns the Rangers

The Rangers are up for auction on 7/16

MLB has to keep the value of their product up. To cause interest in their product. So to make the most profit possible. To make sure the new owners can take control of the team before the trading deadline, and then the Rangers will be able to acquire Cliff Lee in a trade.

I hope Arte buys them

feeder ringer team buwhaaahahhahhahhahaaa

He should buy them and make them use orange baseballs and get an elephant for a mascot
And make them trade Vladdy for Matsui
MC Hammer as manager
HAMMERTIME!
I believe there's a rule against that

Otherwise the Yankees would have bought the rest of the AL East by now.

FU Bud Selig

Tonight we beat The Strangers, The Umps, Bug Selig, and MLB.
Again FU.
Suck on that.

Can't deny my true feelings anymore

I love you, Jered Weaver.

Mike Trout the no.1 prospect in baseball?

Whaaaaaaa?

http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/07/01/revised-top-25-prospects-of-2010/

Trout is considered an absolute superstar at this point
dude is 18... can you imagine being 18 and being the top prospect in baseball?
I've seen him #2 and #3 in two other rankings in the last week

Baseball Prospectus:

2. Mike Trout, OF, Angels
Why He’s Here: It’s not just the ridiculous .367/.449/.543 line at Low-A Cedar Rapids, as it’s hard to find a scout who isn’t downright giddy after watching him. He can hit, he’s a plus-plus runner, he’s going to hit for way more power down the road, his approach is good, and he’s a fine center fielder. What more do you want? How about a max-effort player who runs out every ground ball and does it with a smile on his face? One scout gave him the highest compliment one can get from a talent evaluator: “I’d pay to watch him play.”
Nitpicking: One has to wonder how long Trout will remain a 70 runner (on the 20-to-80 scouting scale), because at 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, he’s physically the most atypical burner around. He’s not going to get slow, but it’s hard to see him being a plus-plus runner when he’s 25.
Future: Trout should be in High-A right now, and he could be in Double-A next year before his 20th birthday. He has a chance to be ahead of the big-league opening created when Torii Hunter’s contract expires after the 2011 season.

Keith Law at the 4 letter:

3. Mike Trout, OF, LA Angels. Oh, just call him up already. The way he’s going, he probably could handle it. Previous ranking: No. 14

Hi guys.

What’d I miss? I saw the last three outs in the 9th, but who got the outs in the 8th?

Rodney didn't really get any outs

he just somehow survived the 8th without blowing the game and giving me an aneurysm.

Did they take him out for another pitcher?

We came home and started watching and while the game was loading I saw the score change from 2-0 to 2-1.

No he closed out the 8th.

We all suffered severe palpitations though. It was a real barn burner.

I know most of the guys here hate Fuentes

but he was really good most of the time last year.

Fans don't remember the nominal saves or holds, or even the wins.

Just the losses and blown plays.

It’s like the bad meal effect. People are more likely to write a review of a restaurant they had a bad experience, than a restaurant they had a good experience at.

Kind a of generalization though.

I know.

One of the playoff game losses I thought really wasn’t his fault. There was an error that should have been an out and the umps were squeezing him.

And I thought the weather was so nasty in New York it was ridiculous to even play.

HAHA

LSB is blaming it on Angel luck again.

They must be reading Jeff Sullivan’s toilet paper.

Yeah, we got to this point with a shitty bullpen and without Kmo with LUCK!

Super magical fairy dust luck.

Morons.

They love a good excuse
They probably think of excuses as 'reasons.'
Also...

they’re still talking about being “5 games up in the loss column”. seriously.

well, you DO know

The team with the fewest losses wins the West, right? This according to LSB fan logic.

Actually

Sullivan had an amazingly Angel-friendly article on SBN MLB today about the Angels actually manifesting CLUTCH:

http://www.sbnation.com/2010/7/1/1547693/josh-hamilton-angels-clutch-angel-pagan

From Jeff's article:

“The Angels seem to have down to a science what other organizations just can’t figure out: how to build and develop a team that ends up greater than the sum of its parts. It’s one of baseball’s holy grails, and a little team in southern California is a step ahead of the pack.”

Right on Jeff, I’m not that mad at you anymore for calling me stupid at LL a few weeks ago.

Won't they excommunicate him at LL for that?
No.

He has some sort of invincibility shield. I think it’s called owning the blog or something to that extent.

he is LL

Pope Jeffchiro the First, he does the excommunicating.

I see, he gets a free pass just for being the pope.
Jeff to LL is Rev to HH

Except I’m an art damaged punk rock fossil

LOL!

On a serious note and completely OT, we aren’t finding a house up here that we like. It’s really starting to suck.

As long as you can watch Angels games online or on cable

any house will be a home.

at least you're post-historic
so does the real one in Rome
I have to give him credit

I semi-trolled after we swept them and he didn’t ban me.

I got banned at LSB for a single post that was poetry compared to the obscenities that spew from their sun burnt .gif exchange board.

After reading that article. I have this seasons rally cry.

Only When It Counts

Yes!

Wood will get a hit; only when it counts.
Fuentes will have a 1-2-3 inning; only when it counts.
Matsui will eventually bust out of his slump; only when it counts.

And finally, Dono Romantico will be banned one day; only when it counts.

Mr. Spock would be proud.

Jeff seems to have found a mathematical rule for “Clutchiness”

Success breeds contempt
  • The Angels have finished ahead of the Rangers for ten consecutive seasons.
  • During this 10-year span of domination the Angels won a World Series Championship and have had six seasons where they posted over 90 wins. The Rangers during this time have had zero 90-win seasons.
  • Arte Moreno is an amazing owner. Tom Hicks is…….
Rangers are the lucky ones this year

Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz having career years, Vlad having his best season since 2005, striking gold with Colby Lewis, C.J. Wilson finding success (and plenty of luck) as a starter after not starting a single MLB game since 2005, and Michael Young somehow not being the stone glove that he usually is in the field.

Other than Harden, lot’s of luck on the Rangers side so far this year.

Its funny to see how much they hate their players too....

i swear, they act as if Michael Young is GMJ.

Whine whine whine

It's not so easy to beat teams over .500
And now we get to play the royals while the rangers go against the whitesox

Time to make up some more ground! 1st by the all star break… come on Angels!!!

Not many Umps

Can screw up a call that badly

You're Right

The Umps didn’t screw anything up.
They’re under direct orders from Bug Sleezy and MLB.

I don't know, it looks a little outside
I know you're being sarcastic, but I'm just gonna say that it's

6 inches from the bottom of the strike zone, and 8 inches from the side of it.

Me, sarcastic?
Does the Pope shit in the woods?
Depends. Is a bear Catholic?
Talking Points
  • Fuentes and his high-80s fastball creates much anxiety for Angel fans in th 9th inning. Despite not lighting up the radar gun, he ranks a very respectable sixth in K/9 ratio (10.88) this year among 78 AL relief pitchers (min. 20 innings pitched). Tip of the Hat to Fuentes for his two perfect saves during this series.
  • Rodney, while having a fastball consistently in the mid-90s, only ranks 66th out of 78 AL relievers in K/9 ratio at a rather disappointing 5.74. Jepsen (10.54) or when Bulger is healthy (9.55) might be better 8th inning alternatives
  • The only beverage the concession stand needs to serve during the 8th inning is Kaopectate.
  • Despite all the problems this season the Angels are just 3.5 games out.
Also

We are only three games out of the wild card if it comes to that

Eff the wild card

Rangers can have that.
If they can manage it.

Of Course I'd love to have a fourth consecutive AL West title

but I really just want to be in the playoffs with a shot at the World Series. No matter how we get there.

I agree completely

But it’s fun to play the obstinate zealot…

Rodney makes me sad face
Doing the talking on the field...................

way to go boys.

Git the flock off our field

Wi: you gotta get a screen cap of bottom of the 5th with Howie batting… Ron Washington is pulling an “Al Bundy” with his hand down his pants. Gonna be useful in your future comic strips. Just a friendly heads-up as I’m watching the replay.

Was it something like this:

essssssakktly

missing some white, chalky residue on the nostrils, though.

Oh AAALLLLLLLLLL!!!
Would've been a sweep

If Kazmir wasn’t hell bent on ruining our playoff chances.

C.J. Wilson apparently isn't impressed by the Angels

Unimpressed, however, was C.J. Wilson, the southpaw who was tagged with the loss, falling to 6-4, after surrendering a pair of runs in 5 2/3 innings.

“We’re a better team — 100 percent,” Wilson said. "When we play up to our capabilities, it might not be that close.

“We have a better balance to our team. They have good pitching, but their offense is like, I don’t know. We have more wins. It’s pretty simple. I’d rather take our offense. I’d rather take our defense. I’d much rather have our bullpen.”

http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100701&content_id=11822854&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=ana

Losing Kendry makes it less in our favor from the offensive side...

But I like our chances…

He *had* to break his ankle for history to go correctly.
I hope he enjoys practicing his golf swing

in October

That Ranger bullpen won't be so great come August and September if they have to keep using it so much

Other than Colby Lewis, the rest of their rotation is very uninspiring. C.J. Wilson has been the beneficiary of a low BABIP and a low HR/FB ratio. I guess one can argue that he can continue to maintain that low BABIP with the Rangers defense, but he needs to walk less people if he hopes to maintain that low ERA. Also let’s see how that bullpen holds up later in the season.

On that note

Oliver is 39 and has pitched 36 Innings already
O’day has pitched 31 innings already.

Our go to guy Jepsen has pitched 27 Innings thus far.
Shields has 26 IP’s, and Rodney 31.

The rangers bullpen has pitched 247.1 Innings this season so far which leads the AL, and is 7th in baseball. You have to wonder how much gas those guys are going to have left come September.

Speaking of low BABIP

Look at Colby Lewis’ – combined with his BAA. Then check his game logs.

His FIP certainly benefits from lots and lots of innings pitched against bad offenses. I doubt he looks anywhere near as good after some strong hitting teams work him over. I was hoping we’d see him this last series.

CJ can say whatever he likes

I went to elementary school with him in HB and used to TP his house all the time.

suck on that CJ!!!

What school?
Mr. Wilson, it's okay.

We’ve luckily won the division three years in a row over three teams that are obviously better than we are. We don’t understand it either, but it just keeps happening. Weird.

Kudos to the home crowd…

Usually they take off at 9:30PM, but they stuck it out for this one. Last night, in a two-run game, there was a mass exodus at 9:30. Tonight, no such luck for the Rangers nor my post-game parking lot exit plans.

Not in our section

We were in 305, taking advantage of the half-price deal to see how the other half lives, and a lot of them were gone before the ninth.

BTW, did you notice the increased security tonight? It was a pain getting into the park. I guess they’re ramping up for the ASG.

No, security seemed the same to me and I have been to 19 games this year...

Strange.

However, I am miffed at the RV lot now being closed off to cash-paying customers. That was the sweetest lot for a quick parking lot exit. It’s only available for busses and people with pre-paid coupons. The sign on that lot always said “pre-paid coupons only,” but it was a secret that any joe blow could park in there. Bummer.

Rev, I'm going to have to ask you to please ban...

…the 3 people out of 123 who have voted so far…who picked someone other than Weav as the panther.

It might be painful to get the ban now, but in the long run, they will be better off for it.

Sorry, 3 out of 180.
Weaver did a great job tonight

But I would have liked to see Fuentes up for panther vote too (kinda just splitting hairs). He’s silently coming back to respectability; it’s good to see that.

I actually got out to the game tonight. Crowd was great, and the T-shirt is actually a good giveaway. The umps can suck a fat one. Inconsistent strike zone and completely botching that call at 2nd have no excuses. If we go by the letter of the law here instead of playing the “vicinity” unwritten rule, then Kinsler should have still been called out for sliding completely through the bag to take out our player. The vicinity is allowed because the sliding to break up the DP is allowed. My brother is a professional umpire and explained this further to me just for clarification. Pisses me off.

But yeah, should be some exciting baseball down the stretch with these two teams.

pitching against the bottom of the order?

it is Panther not Pussy.

But yeah, the ump set howie up to fail on the vicinity play

Wasn't the pregame picks question

Total hits combined for the game? If so, why is the answer 7 when the total is actually 10?

Good question!

Inquiring minds want to know.

Number of singles combined

10 hits – 3 doubles

= 7 singles !
Ah ok,

I should stop doing bets at 2 in the morning if I expect to remember them later that night….

Thanks for the clarification!

Take that, you dirty dopers!
Weaver

Every time I think I have a handle on just how awesome Jered Weaver is, he goes and does something like this, and proves he’s even better.

WTY should be 12-3, not 8-3.

‘Pen has given him 4 NDs after he’s handed them a lead.

I for one am glad....

That this series is over and Vladdy is gone. This series has been the most emotionally frustrating series I’ve seen in a long time…even with the win.

We love you Vladdy, but please go away now.
Victor can be really funny sometimes.
That was Jose, on the postgame, not Victor.
Tattoo McCrackhead?

Classy

Classy? Probably not. Funny? Hell yes!
Weaver is now

the K leader and K/9 leader

Weaver rocks.

And If you look at that picture posted earlier, WTY is SO GETTING LAID!

This car was found in the vistor's parking lot at Angel Stadium while the Rangers were in town
