Angels Drop Game, Selig Drops Ball.  Halolinks.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics - June 8, 2010 - SI.com
There have been plenty of nights this season when the Oakland Athletics struggled to score runs. That's what made the team-wide outburst against Jered Weaver and the Los Angeles Angels so rewarding. Kurt Suzuki went 4 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs, and Jack Cust homered and drove in three runs to help the A's snap the Angels' six-game winning streak with a 10-1 victory Tuesday night.  "Up and down the lineup everybody was putting some good swings on,'' Suzuki said. "We were getting some balls to fall. That's the game. Sometimes you hit line drives and they get caught, sometimes you place them in the right spot. It was nice. Everybody was looking good tonight."  "I felt like I made some good pitches and they were able to put swings on them and they happened to get hits,'' Weaver said. "The ball had eyes it seemed like a few times. I made one bad pitch and it happened to be a three-run home run. Mike (Napoli) called for a slider and I shook him off and threw a two-seam fastball that came back over the plate. It just wasn't a smart pitch."

Sometimes games like this happen.  Oakland's not that good and the Angels aren't that bad, it was just one of those nights.  Interesting quote about pitch selection.

Angels-Athletics Preview - 6/9/10 - FOX Sports on MSN

Braden (4-5, 3.77 ERA) makes this start a month to the day he pitched the first perfect game of the season in a 4-0 Mother's Day win over Tampa Bay on May 9. Since then, Braden is 0-3 with a 4.45 ERA. However, he's received one run of support or less in three of those outings. In his last, Braden allowed four runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-4, 11-inning loss to Minnesota on Friday. Braden is 2-4 with a 4.61 ERA in seven starts against the Angels, including 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA this year. In his first start after the perfect game May 14, Braden allowed four runs in eight innings of a 4-0 loss at Los Angeles to become the first pitcher to follow a perfect game with a complete game since Cleveland's Len Barker in 1981.  Angels' scheduled starter Joe Saunders (4-6, 4.78) also threw a complete game in that contest, giving up four hits to improve to 10-4 with a 3.73 ERA in 16 starts against the A's.  The left-hander, 3-1 with a 3.24 ERA in his last five starts, allowed a run in six innings of a 7-1 win at Seattle on Friday.

Frandsen is a good fit for Angels - The Orange County Register
The Angels claimed Frandsen off of waivers from Boston on April 29, and he was up playing with the Angels nine days later. "He fit right in. He came right in and he's not quiet. He introduced himself," Torii Hunter said. "Right away, he fit in. Guys like him. He's got a big personality. He's out going. He's not nervous. He's not scared. He wants to be in the lineup. It doesn't matter; he'll talk to anybody." For Mike Scioscia, it's easy to see why Frandsen's looked so comfortable with the Angels off the field. "He's goofy," he said, "so he fits right in with those guys."

Angels' Morales set for surgery on Thursday - angelsbaseball.com
Kendry Morales' surgery to repair a fracture in his lower left leg will take place on Thursday, Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated before Tuesday night's game against the A's. "I think he's scheduled for surgery Thursday," Scioscia said. "I think he's over the shock of it. I think he's disappointed but has come to grips with understanding the process, the surgery.

Pros’ reactions to Angels’ draft -  The Orange County Register
Some of the reactions to the Angels’ first five picks in the 2010 draft:
• Keith Law, who rates’ the Angels’ draft one of "the best": "The Los Angeles Angels had a slew of picks, and they stuck to their philosophy with high-ceiling prep players, landing a power-hitting third baseman in Kaleb Cowart; a right-hander with a chance for two plus pitches in the near future in Cam Bedrosian; and one of my favorite swings in the draft in Taylor Lindsey. Chevez Clarke strikes me as the high school analogue to Brentz, a player who was seen as a first-rounder last summer who slipped due to an off spring. The only pick here I didn’t love was Ryan Bolden, an incredibly toolsy outfielder from Mississippi with a 30 present hit tool."

Strasburg strikes out 14 in debut - FOX Sports on MSN
Over-hyped? Are you kidding? Stephen Strasburg went beyond the hype — and anyone's reasonable expectations — by striking out 14 batters in his electric major league debut. With a standing-room-only crowd cheering at every chance, the Washington Nationals phenom put on a dazzling display of power pitching Tuesday night in a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. His fastballs reached 100 mph, and batters found his nasty curves nearly impossible to hit. "I just wanted to go out and soak up everything. It only happens once and I've been waiting for this my whole life,'' Strasburg said.

Stephen Strasburg's debut draws a crowd in Angels' clubhouse - latimes.com
Most major league games on the clubhouse television serve as background noise, with players taking a peek at the action every now and then as they go about their pregame preparations. Not Tuesday afternoon. At least a dozen Angels were glued to the TV in their Oakland Coliseum clubhouse watching the highly anticipated big league debut of Washington Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg.

Selig doesn't see support for instant replay, remains reluctant to set precedent -  USATODAY.com
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig apparently is not hearing what America is saying. Speaking at the MLB draft on Monday, Selig said that he's not seeing a groundswell of support within the game for expanded use of instant replay He told ESPN: "It is interesting. Most baseball people are really against instant replay. There's no question about that." "In the end," Selig said, "good or bad, I will do what I think is right. I'm going to take the responsibility for it. I've been at this the last 45 years of my life, the last 18 (as commissioner), so I'll trust my own judgment."

I curious as to which "baseball people" he thinks are against the use of instant replay.  The above article references a USA Today poll that has 78% of the respondents saying instant replay should be expanded.

Girl hit in head by line drive at Dodger Stadium has surgery - CBSSports.com Baseball
A 3-year-old girl whose skull was fractured by a line drive during batting practice at Dodger Stadium underwent surgery Tuesday.  In a statement, officials from Childrens Hospital Los Angeles said they expect Janelle Briseno will be well enough for release by the end of the week. "The surgery went well and we anticipate a full recovery," said Dr. J. Gordon McComb, the hospital's head of neurosurgery. The accident occurred Monday when Dodgers catcher Russell Martin hit a line drive in the stands near third base, hitting Janelle and knocking her unconscious, said Dodgers spokesman Joe Jareck.  Jareck said batting practice continued, but Martin was upset by the incident and has offered to pay for her medical expenses. Martin said he spoke with the Janelle's father on Tuesday. "I'm just glad to hear that she had surgery earlier today and she's doing better, and long-term she's going to be OK," he said before the game against St. Louis. "I'm sure she's still a little bit shaken up. It's definitely tough for the whole family, but at least the good news is that she's going to be OK."

CIN@WSH: Batista is rejected after hitting Phillips - Video  MLB.com
Nationals reliever Miguel Batista is ejected after hitting Brandon Phillips, who was involved in an earlier play at the plate

This happened a few days ago, but it kind of got lost in all of yesterday's links.  I wanted to comment on this video because a few interesting things happen and my feeling for Phillips go back-and-forth a few times.  I've always liked Phillips, as I've had him on a few of my fantasy teams and any time I've seen Reds games, he seems like a good all-around player.  Anyway, if you watch the video you'll see Brandon Phillips take out Washington's catcher Wil Nieves at the plate.  It's a great play by Phillips, and there's nothing wrong with the hit on the Nat's catcher, but what he does after that is pretty douchy.  Phillips gets up, stomps on the plate and gives himself a chest-thump.  This causes Phillips to fall off of my favorite player list.  But then, during the first pitch of his next at-bat, Phillips is plunked by the Nationals Miguel Batista in obvious retaliation for his douchiness earlier in the game.  In my opinion, another great play.  And this got me thinking; when was the last time an Angel pitcher hit a batter in retaliation?  I couldn't think of any.  Not even when Mark Teixeira ran over Angels catcher Bobby Wilson.  Why don't the Angels play this type of traditional, hard-nosed baseball?  Is it because they've recently not had an occasion that required payback?  Or is this the Angel management style?  (if anyone can remember an obvious retaliatory plunking, please post it in the comment section below).  So anyway, back to Brandon Phillips.  What does Phillips do after getting intentionally dotted?  A lot of players would have rushed the mound after intentionally getting thrown at, but Phillips casually drops his bat and trots down to first.  A professional reaction by a professional player.  He just went back onto my favorite player list.

Fun Baseball Day Yesterday

Strasburg striking out 8 of 10 (I think that was the stat) after giving up the 2 run shot was rad.

Why was Frandsen out of the lineup last night?

Annnnnd……Selig doesn’t want expanded replay because that will make Yankee and Red Sox playoff games take a step closer to fair then they currently are.

Sorry, my mind went wild

He was in the lineup! That’s what I get for drinking and switching between the lamegels and Lakers.

In other news, the New York Post is reporting that the Mariners are seeking revenge on the Angels and Rangers via the only weapon they have left — sending Cliff Lee to the Yankees.

Oh, joy.

" expect the Mariners to ask for two top prospects for the left-hander…Catcher and shortstop are two needs for Seattle." Ninja can send F. Sandoval and B. Wilson, those two are enough right? I hope the Doyers get him, if he does indeed become available.

Retaliation

I believe that’s a Scioscia dictum, that the Angels “don’t do that”.

That's correct

I think Scioscia looks about two beanballs ahead and sees someone—most likely one of his players—getting terribly hurt by a thrown baseball.

In a perfect world, you throw at one of ours, we throw at one of yours, and its done.

In reality, the mound is staffed with guys like Vicente Padilla.

Thoughts after last night

1) Kurt Suzuki not only hit a 3 run homer to deep left off of Weaver, he may also have hit Weaver’s chances at starting the ASG out there as well.

2) Frandsen is goofy. He does really goofy things like calling for pop-ups and then diving to completely miss them when other people have a much easier play on the ball. That’s like what I do when I’m drunk.

3) Viva La Bam Bam!

The Tex play was absolutely legit...

and it’s embarrassing to keep seeing Angel fans complain about it. Escpecially when trying to compare it to the Phillips incident and any talk about retaliation.

I know I know, cheer Erstad, boo any Yankees.

I don't agree

It has nothing to do with the player being Teixeira or even a Yankee. If I remember the play correctly, Wilson wasn’t blocking the plate and there was plenty of the plate exposed for Teixeira to slide over. It looked to me he put his shoulder into Wilson just for the sake of hitting him.

I’m all for the runner bowling the catcher if he’s blocking the plate, that’s just baseball, but not when it’s not necessary to score.

Catcher positions himself anywhere near the plate and he risks getting run over

The throw brought Bobby up the line and he attempted to make the tag. Tex did the right thing by trying to seperate catcher from ball. Great baseball play with an unfortunate outcome.

I just don’t understand your perspective. Soth liked the play and Bobby Wilson had no problem with it.

Tex even had this to say – “I feel terrible. It makes me sick,” Teixeira said. “You never want to hurt a guy. I was going to slide, but as soon as I saw him learning toward me, I thought, ‘OK, he’s got the ball, I’ve got to knock it loose.’ Every time I’m in that position I try to protect myself by lowering my shoulder.”

Personally, my philosophy is when in doubt, ask the opposing announcers.

In the case of Tex’s slide, the Yankees guys both thought it was pretty unnecessary. Contrarily, on Erstad’s play, the Atlanta announcers thought it was hard-nosed and clean.

Ask the other announcers???

I just used my eyes and basic understanding of the game as well as personal experience. It is important to me that things like this are never phased out of the game and especially our kids are never taught to avoid playing the game the right way.

Wilson left the plate open

which is what you are supposed to do when you don’t have the ball. Instead of sliding safe to the inside, Teixiera went so far to the left of the plate, he MISSED the plate in his collision with Wilson. Your understanding of the gane is indeed basic. Leagues that I’ve worked with prohibit collisions like this, so are you talking about high school or college ball? If you teach your child to look for the collision first, and being safe second I hope that your insurance is paid up.

When Pete Rose effectively ended Ray Fosse’s career in the 1970 All-Star Game, he was roundly criticized for doing exactly the same thing. Perfectly legal play, but a douche bag move on Rose and Teixiera’a part. Someone on the Angel’s staff should have set him down, and they very well may when they meet up again in July. Then again, Teixiera sucks so bad right now, it may be a sign that there’s a God.

*Little Leagues prohibit
You clearly need to revisit the play...

because what your saying is that I’m wrong, the league was wrong for no penalty. Soth is wrong, Wilson is wrong, and Tex is wrong even though he said he felt bad our guy guy hurt on a standard play. I never said “look for the collision first.” If the catcher moves in front of the plate, you drop your shoulder and separate player from ball.

I love how you used “perfectly legal” and “Douche bag move” in the same sentence. You go ahead and teach your players to run around catchers and get tagged out. Hell you should probably teach your catchers to stay out of the line and reach in to tag runners as they go by. Then they all get trophies for participation, and I die a little inside.

The pussification of America continues.

I think both views are somewhat correct.

It appeared to me Texeira came in hard – probably harder than was necessary – expecting Wilson to be blocking the plate. I don’t believe he intended to smash Wilson in the head with his shoulder. I believe he anticipated a collision at the plate, and was looking to come in hard and possibly dislodge the ball.
The reason the result was so bad was Wilson’s reaction to the throw. The ball took a strange hop, right toward Wilson’s head (and not in line with the flight path of the ball). Wilson’s instinctive reaction was to move away from the ball…which was the direction he was going anyway, anticipating a swipe tag. It ended up being a bit more of a lead toward the plate with his head than he likely would have done otherwise.
It’s always difficult to gauge someone’s intent. Perhaps Texeira had a bit of a chip on his shoulder after getting booed at Anaheim. He’s probably the only one that knows for sure. My initial reaction was that his slide was far more agressive than needed. I modified that view after watching replays.
The best news to come from this is Wislon is back playing, apparently with no ill side effects. It will be interesting to watch how he reacts to future close plays at home plate.

Perhaps Texeira had a bit of a chip on his shoulder after getting booed at Anaheim

I also think he had a chip on his shoulder for being HBP to get on base during that whole episode.

...forgot about that detail...
I think we got off track here

my point was that the next time Teixeira comes to the plate he gets a fastball to the ass.

That’s the pussification I’m talking about.

Nothing more pussy...

than throwing a baseball at a defenseless batter on purpose for no reason at all. There are reasons of course, but this certainly is not one of them.

That’s what I’m talking about.

If you think just because something is legal, you should do it

then I’ve got a whole bunch of subprime loans for you. It was legal within the rules, it was still a shitty thing to do. He had the slide and chose to take Wilson out. I am all for colliding at the plate if that’s the only way to score, if you think being a class act is being a pussy, there’s nothing further for me to say.

I hope tp God that the “pussification of America” extends neyond baseball and that the youth of America being trained in high finance — where perfectly legal and douche bag moves happen every day — learn that what’s legal and what’s class and ethics are not synonymous.

You're right, subprime loans and plays at the plate are exactly the same...

unfortunately you seemed to miss the part where the throw took Bobby into the collision and HE and SOTH both said it was a clean play with unfortunate results.

I hope you guys keep this in mind when Juan Rivera lays out Pierzinski on a perfectly legal play at the plate that leads to a game winning run. You can call pout and call it classless all you want, I will be celebrating a great play and a win.

Not dirty IMO

Whining is just that whining. It was a boom boom play. It looked as if Wilson was going to catch the ball.

That little girl getting hit

makes you remember that even during batting practice you need to pay attention at all times. With little kids i learned fast to always keep an eye on them. yesterday my 7 month old son decided to crawl up the stairs. I turned around for a second to talk to the wife and he fell down 3 steps.

I just hope that little girl feels better and still goes to baseball games when she is older.

That's what stairway gates are for
Someone should archive that Weaver quote...

…for the next time someone barks about Napoli calling a bad game. Naps ain’t much with throwing out runners, but his game-calling and blocking skills are just fine.

Just got done reading "As They See Em"

a book about umpires. Super interesting especially in regards to instant replay. Turns out most umpires are in favor of instant replay. The logic? If you use instant replay then its less pressure and blame on them…

Its the media that wants instant replay but also the media that instigated the whole “speed the game up” bullshit. Can’t have your cake and eat it too…

I've read that book too

and I’ve been meaning to write something about it, but I’m really poor at writing reviews.

I was surprised at how interesting this book was. If someone were to tell me that there’s a book out there about what it takes to become an umpire, I would have thought…boring. But it was very good.

And you’re right about umpires and instant replay (I had forgotten all about that).

Books? Those are for nerds, right?

Who’s with me, huh? High five!

*high five

huh huh huh! Stupid books

*high five*

i’ll wait for the movie. if there’s no movie made, it wasn’t worth reading.

I find your response both juvenile and boorish.

What does Rod Stewart have to do with books?
Was thinking

that was a picture of the Aerosmith’s other guitarist

That's actually Ann Coulter without her makeup
A girl always looks good in a powdered wig.
Her biting political acumen more than makes up for her looks
Biting is certainly appropriate

I don’t know if acumen fits, though, for her or most others in the Sound Bite Clan.

Coulter is the the political right equal to Maureen Dowd.

Neither one has much appeal to me – at least in terms of their writing/speaking – but the reactions to both are instructive.

As seems typical, the one with the view to the political right gets targeted for criticism (fair and otherwise) far more often than the one to the political left.

"Sound Bite Clan" was all-inclusive
Yes, but the comment above didn't start with a swipe at Dowd.
Yeah, because I thought it looked vaguely like Ann Coulter

Had I thought it looked like Dowd or whoever, I would’ve said so.

To your second point: It goes in cycles. Right now the right is up in arms and making a fuss about everything. See Coulter etc. A few years ago it was the left with Michael Moore, Garafalo, etc and they got ridiculed.

This is why Stewart and Colbert are the only TV news sources I really pay attention to. At least they admit they’re schmucks whose purpose is to entertain.

Coulter could'nt hold Dowd's panty hose.

Dowd is a real writer with a regular column in the NY Times. Coulter is a foul mouthed woman without a drop of talent in her brain.

How did you know Dowd wears pantyhose?

My greater point is both write in ways designed to provoke the reader through “enhanced” satire.

To be a “real” writer you need to be published by the NYT? Or is that like some kind of benchmark for “real” writers? That’s the kind of thinking that is leading to the death of the dinosaur media. Being published in the NYT makes one a good writer of thinking to the political left. That’s about it.
As far as comparative levels of talent, I really don’t any difference between the two. To me, they write the same political satire, one from the right, the other from the left.

I prefer whoever writes in a clear and logical manner

I read the SF Chronicle on a daily basis. I also read the conservative SF Examiner.

When I"m back home I read the OC Register. It’s pretty weak at times but I’m a huge fan of Mark Steyn’s column.

I’ve yet to find a source without a clear bias so I drink from many troughs and craft my stance and opinions on well-read foundation. It’s a shame more people don’t take the time to do the same.

Rex, that was deep, and I am also like minded.

Reward yourself. Hit your stash bro. ;)

I thought he looked more like Robert Plant
Well, I find your response mature and articulate.

And I’m afraid I don’t have a picture for that to paste here.

maybe a link

the last time i can remember a retaliation plunking...

… Was the bean ball war we had with Texas about 3 or 4 years ago. I think it all started with that clown vicente padilla throwing a fit and plunking our batters in frustration over getting lit up. I think the end result was was AK charging the mound in Texas after being hit, which incited a bench clearing. I remember the pitcher being almost twice his height, was it chris young? Can’t remember anything since then. But I have been frustrasted many times over sosh’s “high road” stance on the matter. And since I brought up that series with texas, I’d like send an extra special"Fuck You" to Vicente Padilla and Buck Shmuckwalter. I still can’t stand those two.

Fandsen is a perfect fit at third base or wherever Soth plays him.

He is getting quite a bit of playing time so it is obvious Soth likes him. Who would’nt be happier and play better once they were freed from the horrible Red Sox* organization and picked up by a fun team like the Angels? This is not even a question.

I agree with Soth playing him and naps regularly.

My only concern is what happens when mathis and company come back.

If someones is playing well and producing it’d be tough for me to send them down or bench them. Or even platoon them since time off the field can lead to losing your timing or hot streak.

at least in my opinion.

Frandsen seems to be doing fine at third

Napoli looks okay at first, when Mathis returns why not have him and Wilson cover catcher, leave Naps and Frandsen at third and first.

I'd agree with that for sure
My guess is Mathis and Napoli will continue to platoon catcher with Mathis getting the bulk of

the starts. Naps will get starts at first base, along with Q and Ryan. Izzy and Franny share third base starts and rest the other infielders as needed. Wood will not play anymore this year. He will stay on the DL until after the all star break or whenever they expand the roster he will be on the roster but they just won’t play him. I don’t think they want to let Wood go, it is just he showed he can’t help the team at this time.

A player on the DL can only play on a rehab assignment for a limited time.

I’m not 100% sure how long that it, but since Wood has been playing in AAA on his “rehab assignment” for almost a week now, I’m pretty sure he’s going to have to come off the DL pretty soon, or stop playing in AAA…

yeah. I wasn't sure of the particulars on that.

Unless somehow they have him “re-injure himself” or something. I just don’t see them starting the whole thing with Wood over again when Frandsen is doing reasonably well and Izturis is healthy and productive. On the other hand I just don’t see them letting Wood go completely either.

Well his ego is hurt for sure

How long does one-a-them take to get better? Dr. Phil?

20 days.

is the max a player can go on a rehab assignment. As I said below, since Ryan and Q are signed to minor league contracts, they are the ones mostly likely to get sent down. K-Frand is signed to a minor league contract as well but he’s proved effective and versatile, so he’ll stay along with Wilson since Naps will be getting starts at first.

This defintiely makes sense...

but I wouldn’t be surprised if soth throw everyone a big Strasburg curveball with his roster choices. He’s left me scratching my head more than a few times.

Too many people on the squad with these predictions...

Wood will return and so will Mathis. Which means you’re gonna have to drop two players off the 25-man roster. With Naps getting some starts at first, I would be led to believe that Wilson stays. So that leads me to think that Ryan and Quinlan are the ones on the bubble. However, Q adds a bit of good D in the late innings when its close. Of course, Wood has experience at first as well.

Since Wood is out of options and Q was signed to a minor league contract, I think Ryan and Q go down, Wilson, Frandsen stay. Wood gets rotated between third and first, three or four times a week until he sucks so bad that they either DFA him or just use him almost strictly in a utility defensive role a la Q.

If we trade most of these guys at the break; that will solve these issues.
I think he has only gone one game without a hit for the Angels...

he fits this ball-club well…

Hey Bud...

WAKE THE HELL UP (I thought long and hard about dropping my June F’bomb here).

Talking to your good ol boy network is NOT getting a feel for how consistently crappy your umpiring is! And the bottom line here is that it HAS BEEN HORRIBLE AND IT IS GETTING WORSE DAILY!

So Bud is against instant replay expansion. What a shock.

He’s probably still coming to terms with Western Union no longer wiring telegrams.
