I took what I thought was my last grad school final ever about 15 years ago — only to return to college again last year. I have a final next week, but it’s in a class I’m taking just for fun.
Indeed, once in a great while there is a late round pick "surprise"
I think the most famous would have to be Mike Piazza. Tommy Lasorda tells it as:
“No one drafted Michael. Finally, I told our club, ‘I want him drafted.’ We sent five scouts to see him and they told the Dodgers they still didn’t want to draft him. We took him in the 62nd round. That meant there were 1,026 players drafted in front of him.”
By the same token, I’m sure we could make a long list of first pick busts. The most well-known being Steve Chilcott, the first pick by the Mets in the ’66 draft, picked before Reggie Jackson. We all know where Jackson went from there. As for Chilcott… he never got past Triple A.
But that’s what is kind of fun about the draft. It’s a gamble, and there is no way of knowing if that “can’t miss” kid who does so well in high school or college can carry that over to the major leagues. Every player picked has the potential to be a pleasant surprise, or a huge disappointment. Flip a coin and hope..
What happens with all these guys in the lower rounds? Do they all get signed and start in low A or that Arizona development league? Do a lot of them keep playing in college or HS or whatever to try to earn a higher draft position next year? And what’s this rash on my back?
I just looked through all the players that we drafted this year so far.. Not a single one of them is older than me, the oldest one is 5 months younger. Haha.
My wife is in labor with a new HHer!!! Wanted to give updates but then realized it would kind of be creepy seeing how I don’t know any of you. Nonetheless, I felt like I wanted to update you all!

I have a dumb question
What happens with all these guys in the lower rounds? Do they all get signed and start in low A or that Arizona development league? Do a lot of them keep playing in college or HS or whatever to try to earn a higher draft position next year? And what’s this rash on my back?
Thanks guys.
RexTookMyStash - June 9, 2010
They can do either really.
Some just want to get started in pro ball and sign, others want to go back to school and reenter the draft further down the read.

I think
about 25-30 players sign from the draft, so about half
they will go to AZL or Orem both Rookie leagues
the ones that go to the AZL are mostly highschool guys and the ones who go to the Orem Owlz are mostly from college
