Royals' Greinke remains mortal - Wichita Eagle
Greinke fell to 1-7 after allowing four runs and 10 hits while throwing 116 pitches in six innings. His ERA edged up to 3.60. In the AL that's not bad. It's just not dominant like his 2.16 mark in 2009. "Not awful," he said, "but I made a couple of mistakes." The biggest mistake was a hanging slider that Torii Hunter slammed 414 feet for a two-run homer in the fifth inning (here's the video: Hunter smashes a two-run shot in the fifth). Had Greinke been in top form, it would merely have kept him even because Angels starter Jered Weaver (5-2) permitted just four hits in seven shutout innings while striking out nine and walking one. "He's a pretty darn good pitcher," center fielder Mitch Maier said. "And when he can command all of his stuff, he's tough. He's got a lot of deception—he's stepping over here and throwing over there."
Obviously I haven't been watching close enough over the last couple seasons, but I just recently noticed how Weaver doesn't stride straight towards the plate when he pitches, but rather he lands a couple feet to the third base-side of the mound. This is what Maier is talking about in the above quote. I know this isn't "normal", but can anyone remember another pitcher who threw like this? Yesterday's highlights: Frandsen starts a double play in the eighth - Billy Butler grounds out to Kevin Frandsen to start an inning-ending double play (watch how Howie Kendrick stands in against a sliding David DeJesus to turn the double play). And, here's the Angels closer doing what he does best: Bloomquist smacks a two-run shot in the ninth - Willie Bloomquist (Yeah, Willie Bloomquist!) crushes a two-run shot to left to cut the Angels' lead to one in the ninth.
Angels-Mariners Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
Joe Saunders (3-6, 5.09 ERA), set to take the mound for the Angels in the opener of this three-game set, faced Seattle on Sunday and had one of his worst starts of the season. He surrendered seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings before the Angels rallied to win 9-7. It was a setback for Saunders, who went 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA in his previous four outings. The left-hander is 6-0 with a 2.93 ERA in his last nine starts versus the Mariners. Seattle will counter with Ian Snell (0-3, 4.58), who matched up with Saunders on Sunday, surrendering three runs and walking four in four innings. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA in three starts against the Angels. Snell is 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in two starts since rejoining the rotation.
The Angels next stop on their "Sir George's Smorgasbord" of tasty treats is Seattle. It's too bad the Orioles weren't part of this spread so the club could fill up on more weak-team favorites.

Yost is ejected after exchange with Estabrook - Video MLB.com
Ned Yost is ejected after coming to the defense of catcher Jason Kendall in an exchange with Mike Estabrook
This was completely absurd. I'm not a big Jason Kendall fan, but I respect the way he complained to the home plate umpire in the correct way and was totally professional in how he handled this situation. No one knew he was even talking until Estabrook came out from behind him and got in his face. Since when is it acceptable for an umpire to escalate an argument? Forget that, when did it become acceptable for an umpire to START an argument?
Does Derrek Lee make sense for Angels? - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN
Is Derrek Lee better than some sort of platoon involving Mike Napoli and Mike Ryan, with Robb Quinlan occasionally tossed in there for old times' sake? Probably. But not by a lot. But as long as they're within shouting distance of first place, they have to keep looking at their weak spots. First base is obviously one of them, but third base is worse, plus two-fifths of the rotation and a goodly chunk of the bullpen. Considering Mike Scioscia's man-crush on Jeff Mathis, when Mathis comes off the DL, Scioscia should probably just install him behind the plate and give most of the first-base action to Napoli. The Angels need to make some in-house fixes, and this is probably the easiest.
Rob Neyers take on the Derrek-Lee-to-the-Angels rumors. Today is Darin Erstad's 36th birthday. (ridiculous player signing suggestion alert. snorhor please skip this section. Thank you) What's he up to these days? Would he be better than Quinlan as a first baseman/bench guy?

Griffey retires from the game, not family or friends - Hal McCoy
In 2005, when Griffey played for the Cincinnati Reds, he had one home run in April and the fans were on him like five coats of paint on a smooth wall. I wrote a column in which I said, "If Ken Griffey Jr. stays healthy this year, if he doesn’t hit 30 home runs I’ll eat this column on Courthouse Square. And I’ll furnish the ketchup." Written and done. Forgotten. I thought. Griffey had never mentioned a word to me about it. On August 25, 2005, a sultry night in Washington’s RFK Stadium, Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 531st career home run, his 30th home run of the season. After the game, I was standing outside the clubhouse door, awaiting admittance for post-game interviews. Griffey walked by and said, "Hal," and he flipped me a baseball, THE baseball. On it, he had written, "To Hal, Thanks so much for the friendship. All my best, Ken Griffey Jr., Home Run No. 30, Home Run No. 531, August 25, 2005." He had read the column. He hadn’t forgotten.
I think we fans sometimes forget that the players are in fact, human too (you know, that "human element" thing), so it shouldn't come as a surprise when one of them does something nice...but it does. And it's newsworthy. Anyway, here's a story about Griffey being nice.
Cameron Diaz: Sex keeps me young - MLB News - FOX Sports on MSN
Actor Cameron Diaz has attributed her youthful appearance to an active sex life in excerpts which emerged Thursday of an interview published in the latest issue of British Vogue magazine. Diaz, who has been romantically linked to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez since February, said along with diet, exercise and laughter her beauty regime also includes "lots of sex." "Yes, sex, we need that as human beings," she said. "It's healthy, it's natural and it's what we're here to do."
What does this have to do with the Angels? Nothing. What does this have to do with baseball? Nothing. What does this have to do with anything? Nothing. But I have to say, if I were ever to try and get into shape, her regime would be at the top of my list. Finding a trainer would be the hard part.

If you had told me. . .
at the beginning of the season, that
Frandsen to Kendrick to Quinlan would be a doubleplay combination for us, I would have laughed and shouted insults at you.
Also, I would only support signing Darin Erstad if it means he can get a bobblehead day. If we had signed him earlier, we could have just repainted the gnomes with his likeness.
As far as Derrek Lee, the reason the Cubs want to trade him to us should make us pause. He makes too much money, he’s washed up and he’s playing like crap. Putting it that way, I would rather have us stick with Ryan, Napoli, Quinlan and the entire Salt Lake City roster.

At this point I’d rather most of them be retired and bring up a whole slew from the minors. These guys suck and they have sucked for years. Just getting worse.

Naps at 1B for sure
Get Mathis behind the plate and just let Napoli hold down 1B. Unlike B Wood, I do think that Napoli benefits from the daily play, and less wear and tear from catching means he should be fresher to catch after K-Mo comes back.
D Lee is not much of an improvement over a Mike Napoli hitting .260 with two dozen homers.
We need to correct the bullpen, not a 2-3 month hole that we can somewhat fill.
Kernel - June 4, 2010
I have similar thoughts on D Lee
Defensively he is probably more sound than Napoli at first, but offensively I don’t know. I think Nap could easily hit over two dozen HR’s if he gets close to 500 or so AB’s this year like he should. He’s hit 20 each of the past two years in a little more than half a season of playing time each. I’m more than confident that he can hit 5-10 more given another 200 or so AB’s and possibly even exceed that.
Commander_Nate - June 4, 2010
The comparison
Is not so much Napoli vs Lee (I’d take Napoli), but Napoli and Mathis vs. Lee and Napoli.
Unless Lee is totally cooked (I doubt considering how well he hit last year) he’s a much better hitter than Mathis. But Mathis gives us better D at catcher and from the first 2 games, Napoli looks pretty competant at first base. So considering we’d have to pay Lee’s contract or give up prospects, I say go with what you have and let Napoli play first.
RallyMonkey5 - June 4, 2010
Part of the equation has to be catching 9 innings too
That is physically demanding. Being in a crouch and doing all the work of a catcher is hard. By the time he gets up to bat in the 7th-9th innings, I doubt he has much left. Everyday play at first and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 35 homers from him

Good to see Glaus is still doing well
He was my favorite player when he was with the Angels and he’s still up there, so it’s nice to see that despite all the injuries and stuff he’s dealt with, he’s doing well.
~MMP~ - June 4, 2010
Yea. He was mine and Red Bandit's favorite player as well
F**king Metrodome ruined his Angel career when he tweeked his shoulder diving for a ball on the bullsh*t turf there.
Raaddad - June 4, 2010
Hey, no need for me to skip that one.
As I’ve said lately when discussing trade proposals for players who can’t hit, if we’re dead set on getting some awful, washed up player, why not Erstad? At least he’s our light hitting, washed up guy.
He won’t be any worse than Q. Although, Soth would probably play Erstad everyday because of the whole grittiness thing. Yeah scratch that idea, at least with acquiring someone else’s washed up player, Soth might not have a clear memory of what the guy did in 2000 and therefore won’t feel compelled to play him.

You don't know what Kendall was saying to the umpire.
So, I would hold back judgement on that one.
Downing Rules - June 4, 2010
I would think if Kendall had said anything too bad, he'd have been tossed.
If he was bitching about the way Estabrook was calling the game, Estabrook should have told him to pipe down or he’d be gone. If Kendall kept it up, toss him, not come around in front and argue with him.
WiHaloFan - June 4, 2010

If what Kendall said was that bad, Estabrook should have tossed him. Estabrook’s job is to calm things down, not escalate the disagreement.

WiHaloFan - June 4, 2010

This appeared to be Eastbrook escalating the situation by coming around and getting in Kendall’s face. Very unprofessional.
As the KC announcers said, it appeared he was ‘baiting’ Kendall and the KC bench. I applaud the manager there for sticking up for Kendall.
Umpire behavior is getting out of hand.

At least Clinton did'nt start any needless wars of choice or torture anybody during his Presidency.
Or view the Katrina disaster through the tiny porthole of Air Force One on his way back to Washington then forget it happened for a week until an aide showed him what was going on from news video clips. I will take a sex regime over a regime of incompetency any day. Everyone wants to pretend the Bush regime never happened, but it did, and some of us won’t forget.

I should let this go but...
It was clinton’s decision to perjure himself before congress that was the proble. Don’t be so misled into thinking it was a bj that got him in trouble. It was choosing to attempt to deceive congress in an official congressional hearing that caused him problems.
It was a despicable decision that should haunt him for the rest of his life and legacy.
Balls and Strikes - June 4, 2010 via mobile
At least Clinton did show up to testify, and not blow them off as was the habit
of the Bush Administration on a fairly regular basis if they were called to testify on something like outing a CIA officer.
44FAN - June 4, 2010
Yeah bush is a nut, we all know that
I’m not arguing that. I agree he was a very bad president, among the worst in our history. But I think a president who willingly chooses to violate his oath to congress has to be included among the worst ever also.
There are protections in place so clinton could have not answered the question or stated it was of no relevance what his relationship with an intern was. He faced no repurcussions for telling the truth or not answering the question. He chose instead to try and deceive. It shows a COMPLETE lack of regard and respect for the authority and significance of congress- the congress which represents the people of the United States.

That's not why we were told we were going to Iraq
The issue that we were told made invasion imperative was “WMDs”. If our true concern was to stop genocide, we should have been in most of Africa for a few decades now.
I just want to point that out.
Commander_Nate - June 4, 2010
No matter what the reason soldiers march on their orders.
It’s not like they had a choice of deciding to go or not based on the reasoning.
Maybe we really believed there was WMD’s there. Maybe we just wanted to go to take control of their oil industry. Maybe we went because we really wanted to check out Saddam’s guest house.
No matter what we are still shedding blood there in an unwinnable war. The situation stinks no matter which label you stick on it.
RexTookMyStash - June 4, 2010
I totally agree
I went to boot camp in 2003, so believe me I understand what it means to have marching orders.
My point is that the reason the public was sold on Iraq has long since been confirmed to be false and by many indications was knowingly false at the time. As you say, this has proven to be quite costly. Even more infuriating to me is that it diverted tremendous resources from Afghanistan and Pakistan – where our real enemies reside – causing that war to be prolonged indefinitely and also made potentially unwinnable. It’s congress and the government’s job to think about where we go to war and why, and they put practically no effort into their duties compared to their TMZ-like approach to Clinton’s promiscuity. Meanwhile, certain groups and indivduals profited handsomely and contine to and many more have been killed or wounded.
Unfortunately this is commonplace in international politics. Makes it kind of depressing to pay attention to.

I’ve seen and read a fair amount about the Middle East over the years though, through school and my own curiosity. What do you mean exactly?
Commander_Nate - June 4, 2010
They were supposed to provide classes with the culture of the Middle East, like how the people entertain themselves, kids with nothing but smiles, and the there were some videos that show the deceased. I was just curious because I don’t know when they started showing these videos to soldiers.

It's amazing how much more information the average citizen has
regarding foreign policy than any member of Congress, or the Joint Chiefs of Staff, or the Secretary of State, or any other appointed member of any administration. If only any average citizen had been available to serve in the Bush administration things would have turned out so differently. Or maybe I’m confusing all this with a syndrome known as ‘armchair quaterbacking’.
Seriously, every administration is guilty of some corruption at sometime, and every administration genuinely wants to solve problems, both foreign and domestic. Frankly, it’s too easy, and cheap, in my opinion, to lambast any administration for its faults, real or perceived

A few more links...
so you don’t have to go looking around.
From J. Starks
“Baseball people who have spoken to the Angels’ brass since they lost Kendry Morales are convinced they’ll be out there bat-hunting at some point — but not for a few weeks.
For now, the Angels will try to fill Morales’ spikes from within, mostly by giving Mike Napoli a shot to play a lot of first base following the return of fellow catcher Jeff Mathis. But they’re also assuming the bat market will open up in July. At that point, they’ll no doubt be shopping."
On the Lee and Oswalt topics, both the Astros and Mariners need to be at a point where their season can’t be salvaged to trade their respected aces—nothing new here. It’s widely believe that Oswalt can be had for 3 centerpiece players, get on it Ninja.
From J. Heyman
D. Haren is a “long shot” when it comes to being dealt, due to his contract that goes into 2012. Getting Haren will be harder to get than a Lee or Oswalt because the D’backs are going to want a major return—breaking news.
SenorChuckles - June 4, 2010
3 centerpiece players for Oswalt?!
Yeah forget that (the past couple of years up until 2010 he had back troubles that limited his effectiveness and ‘ace-ness’). Not to say he wouldn’t be good, but I really hope we don’t pursue that line of inquiry.

Why do we need to trade for anyone? IF given 600 AB’s , Napoli would hit 35- 40 bombs, 90 – 100 RBI, probably hit .244, and strikeout 170 times.
Why give up our talent, when we already have a solid replacement?

idk if we need another bat to tell you the truth.

That's probably a good comparison

Imagine playing the Rangers near Dallas with a rotation of
Cliff LEE
Matt HARVEY
Roy OSWALD
We would just assassinate them

Oswald? Assasination? Texas?
all the pieces are falling into place. I knew there was a conspiracy.

Would AK survive facing that rotation?

The End of the Frandsen Highlight...
is it me or does no one give him a high-five at the end? Howie just kind of runs into him.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - June 4, 2010
Someone mentioned that during the game thread
Rev pointed out that Howie was sitting next to K-Frand in the dugout.
BTW, does anyone else think of Kevin Federline when Frandsen it mentioned? I do, and I hate it.
WiHaloFan - June 4, 2010
Someone in another thread
called him ‘Peter Frampton’ which I thought was funny, so that’s what I think of.
Maybe you can sub that in.

You couldn't find a better summary of the Angels backend
Than the game yesterday. Kevin Jepsen’s ERA continues to rise while his FIP continues to fall. His BABIP is up to an absurd .403 now, while his strand rate is down to 58.1%. That’s not just bad luck, that’s some witch doctor sticking pins in your voodoo doll whenever someone puts a ball in play against you. It’s such a shame, because he’s never going to get promoted to more meaningful innings until the BABIP normalizes.
Meanwhile, Fernando Rodney comes in, throws one pitch and gets two outs. Rodney must be the one with Jepsen’s voodoo doll, because he’s soaking up all of the success Jepsen should be enjoying, and then some. The difference between Jepsen’s FIP and his ERA is still over a hundred points greater than Rodney’s ERA, which I guess is why they say that in baseball, it’s better to be lucky than good. Rodney still pitches like shit, with more walks than strikeouts, but I guess the Force is with him.
And Fuentes? What the hell? I still don’t get it. His strikeout and walk rates are K-Rod-esque, but he’s allowed 6 home runs in less than 14 innings. How is that even possible? Almost 25% of the flyballs he’s allowed have left the yard, and nearly two-thirds of all balls in play against him are flyballs, so…yeah. What is that? Stupid bad luck? Rodney with the voodoo doll? Pure suck of unspeakable proportions? I don’t know. But the more I keep thinking it has to level off sooner or later, the more it seems like later rather than sooner.
The backend of this bullpen is no fun to watch right now.

It just goes to show you my friend
Despite all the excellent work you have been doing, that baseball is something that often subverts all statistical analysis. The “intangibles” we have discussed here previously often outweigh the seemingly “tangible.”
Raaddad - June 4, 2010
Not a .403 BABIP
my gosh, the end is near.
Downing Rules - June 4, 2010
well if he would not walk guys, that might help his cause
Wally's World - June 4, 2010
Fuentes
His GB rate so far in 2010 is 19.4%. Was never below 32.6% in 2006-2009.
FB rate is 61.1%. Was never higher than 49.7% 2006-2009.
But why? Still playing around with the Pitch f/x tool over at Brooks Baseball, but we do know he’s lost significant velocity – which means less pitch movement.
Assumption is he’s throwing more slow, elevated cheese (and batters are pasteurizing it) when he does manage to get it over the plate.
Here’s the pitch Bloomquist turned on yesterday (#3):

Measured at 91.1MPH. The K.C. gun was clearly cooked by a couple/three MPH so call it 88MPH. Up in the zone, slow and easy to turn on.
He’s 34 and probably done.

Thank you!
This quantifies my ‘gut’ feeling about Fuentes fastball.
Fan Since 1981 - June 5, 2010
Excellent; thank you Suboptimal.
You mirrored my exact thoughts about the Fuentes dilemma, as well as everything about Jepsen. The HR/FB rate for Fuentes is absurd and reminds of my opinion about Justin Speier in January 2009. Similar to back then, my ‘gut’ feelings about Fuentes is that his fastball has lost its bite.
I really appreciate your superb stat work and the way you think. I just wish it was the norm around here rather than the exception.
I’ll go cry now.

On a different note: My Plan for Immediate Relief for the Angels Bullpen
6th Inning or earlier: Shields, Jepsen, Bulger (until they get better)
7th Inning: Michael Kahn (yes, bring him up asap)
8th Inning: F-Rod II
9th Inning: Rodney
Fuentes: to get Ortiz out maybe (lefties and emergencies)
Raaddad - June 4, 2010
what about the 5th inning when Kazmir pitches?
DAD OF VLAD - June 4, 2010
1. See "6th inning or earlier"
2. Hope we have a big ass lead

It's Kohn...
and the guy has pitched a grand total of five innings EVER in triple A.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - June 5, 2010
WE WANT ERSTAD!
Actually though, not for 1st base. Can he pitch out of the bullpen? He has to be better than the shit we’re sending out now.
ryanfea - June 4, 2010
Weaver is hardcore.
Too bad he’s had some no decisions, he should have more like 7 or 8 wins by now, and be a top candidate for Cy Young talks in the early going this year. I guess there’s still plenty of time for him to get up to the 20 win range, if he stays consistent.
Rally Manatee - June 4, 2010
Yes,
if he can pitch CGs the rest of the season.
raskul - June 4, 2010
Speaking from arte's wallet
Were probably better off with him getting some no decisions and no cy love… It’ll cost a lot less in January.
