Sixth sins: Rangers' failure to close out Angels in 6th leads to 6-5 loss - Dallas Morning News
The big blow in the sixth was a three-run double Bobby Abreu off Darren Oliver . Frandsen scored the tying run on a Jeff Mathis one-hop smash off Elvis Andrus' glove after moving to second on a wild pitch. Erick Aybar followed Mathis with a third straight single to chase Scott Feldman , who had retired the first two hitters in the sixth on eight pitches. Oliver walked Howie Kendrick, then hung a 3-2 curveball to Abreu. "I hung a curveball, and he did what he was supposed to do with it," Oliver said.
I've had a rough week, so I unintentionally fell asleep in the second inning of this game (I know, what kind of fan am I?) So it wouldn't be right for me to comment on the game, but I can provide some highlights...Angels fans applaud Vlad in his return - Vladimir Guerrero receives a warm welcome from Angels fans as he steps up to the plate in a Rangers uniform, Abreu clears the bases with a double - Bobby Abreu doubles down the right-field line to clear the bases, breaking the tie and putting the Angels up by three in the sixth, Vlad crushes a two-run shot to dead center - Vladimir Guerrero belts his 16th home run of the season, chasing in Josh Hamilton and cutting the Rangers' deficit to one run.

Rangers-Angels Preview - 6/30/10 - FOX Sports on MSN
Texas is planning to recall Omar Beltre and give him the start Wednesday in his long-delayed major league debut. The 29-year-old right-hander was considered one of the club's top prospects, but was unable to enter the United States from the Dominican Republic for five years because of visa problems. Beltre was 0-2 with a 1.25 ERA in five starts this season for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was 0-5 with two saves and a 2.39 ERA in 15 appearances overall, and will take the ball in place of Colby Lewis, who was pushed back to Friday. Scott Kazmir (7-6, 5.42) takes the mound looking to end his struggles at home. The left-hander has lost three straight starts at Angel Stadium, posting an 8.36 ERA in those games, and is 2-3 with a 6.84 at home this season. Kazmir's problems in Anaheim continued Thursday, as he gave up five runs with three walks and hit a batter in a 10-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He won his previous four June outings with a 2.35 ERA - all of them coming on the road. He is 6-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 11 starts versus the Rangers but lost in his most recent outing against them, allowing four runs in seven innings of a 4-3 road defeat May 17. Kazmir has had success against Hamilton, holding him to 3 for 12.
I'm always nervous when the Angels face a rookie, especially one making his MLB debut. And one who has problems getting a visa for 5 years.
Mike Trout is so good - Angels blog - The Orange County Register
How good? Here’s Keith Law’s top 25 prospects in all of baseball, updated today: "3. Mike Trout, OF, LA Angels. Oh, just call him up already. The way he’s going, he probably could handle it. Previous ranking: No. 14″ He’s behind Domonic Brown of the Phillies and Desmond Jennings of the Rays.
Sam Miller points out what Trout would look like if he were in the majors right now (using MLE) and who he'd be better than.
Big A revamps food for All-Star Game - Fast Food Maven - The Orange County Register
And the king of the stadium grub will certainly be the hot dog. An estimated 23,000 dogs are expected to be sold at the game, which is why Angel Stadium created several new frankfurters to entice fans. This year, the stadium launched Major League Dogs. The two stands feature five new hot dogs, including the Halo Dog, the Chicago Dog, the Kansas City Dog (topped with smoked brisket), the Boston Dog (topped with baked beans) and The New York Coney (topped with chili and cheese). Another new dog dubbed the Foot-long Rally Brat ($9.50) is also being sold exclusively in premium ticket-holder seats. Served on an Italian subroll, the beef/pork bratwurst is topped with sauteed onions and fresh sauerkraut. "I think they’re going to blow [fans] minds," Chef Dekker said of the new hot dog lineup.
Wait. The foot-long dog is only being sold in premium ticket-holder seats? We poor slobs don't rate? Are people with more money just used to 12" wieners? No wonder I'm poor.
Angels wrong on Guerrero - The Orange County Register
It’s a great week to make fun of the Angels, and not just because they’re trailing a team so financially distressed that baseball has had to bail it out. At this stage, the Rangers have a better chance of making the playoffs than they have of making their payroll. Failing to re-sign Guerrero hasn’t worked out too well. But it’s hardly the worst decision the Angels have made in recent years. That trophy was retired the day they signed Gary Matthews Jr., the winner of this franchise’s lifetime underachievement award.
I'm warning you ahead of time, this is a Jeff Miller post (yeah, that Jeff Miller), but the line about the Rangers making the playoffs rather than payroll was good (although linking to it felt like digging your wife's wedding ring outta the dog's pile of poop).
Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels - June 30, 2010 - MLB.com Preview
Omar Beltre will take the hill for the Rangers on Wednesday against Scott Kazmir and the Angels in Anaheim, and Hamilton will look to extend his career-best 22-game hit streak. For Beltre, the start will be the end of a long journey. The 26-year-old wasn't allowed to enter the country from 2005-09 after being caught in a human-trafficking ring in the Dominican Republic, but he got his visa this year in time for Spring Training. After posting a 2.39 ERA in 15 outings (five starts) for Triple-A Oklahoma City, he got the callup and was penciled in as the starter after Colby Lewis' start was moved to Friday.

Cliff Lee goes distance for Seattle Mariners vs. New York Yankees - FOX Sports on MSN
The Mariners ace beat the New York Yankees in their ballpark yet again, pitching his third straight complete game to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 7-4 victory Tuesday night. Lee (7-3) beat New York twice in last year's World Series for the Philadelphia Phillies, including Game 1 at Yankee Stadium. He also won the ballpark opener for Cleveland in April 2009.
Wouldn't this guy look good atop the Angels rotation? Never going to happen unless the club signs him as a free agent, but just think about it.
South Carolina Defeats UCLA; Gamecocks Win Program's First National Championship - Michael Huang - Sporting News
It seems fitting that a Royals draft pick was the last batter in the last College World Series game at a ballpark in which Royals Triple-A players have competed for 41 years. South Carolina outfielder Whit Merrifield, Kansas City's ninth-round draft pick this month, singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning Tuesday, vaulting the Gamecocks past UCLA 2-1 and giving the school its first baseball national championship.
There's a Cocks joke in there somewhere, but sadly, I going to pass.

It disappeared off the menu this year and now it reemerges for the Newport crowd.

If being an extra in Moneyball means
that you’ll have to cheer for the A’s, even if they aren’t the “real” A’s, even if you will be in a movie (although likely never seen), then I will have to say “No thanks” although in a more strenous way then I can produce while @ work.

Why do I have a BAD feeling Mike Napoli’s days as an Angel are seriously numbered…….
firebird81 - June 30, 2010
not sure.
why?
dr-awkward - June 30, 2010
He's not going anywhere...
he’s our first baseman. Barring complete collapse in the standings and us becoming sellers, he isn’t leaving this team until Kendry is back on the field.
Nashdiesel - June 30, 2010
Even then, in 2011 I'd be tempted to say if he can learn 1B, he can learn 3B.
Boy would that solve some problems! Free up a spot for a catcher (Conger) and redeem the botched McPherson/Wood experiment. With K-Mo back at 1B and Naps across from him, we’d have two bad-ass, slugging corner infielders for the first time since Glaus and Vaughn.
Rally Manatee - June 30, 2010
No way
I’m a Naps fan, but dude totally lacks the range for 3B, no? He’d have to lead the league in OBP to balance out the defensive liability.
Big lug with no range but a good glove and power at the plate = 1B.
LAASurfin - June 30, 2010
I'm not convinced.
Sure, he looks like a big lug, but he moves pretty well. I’ve seen him range to his right pretty nicely a couple of times at 1B. And doesn’t 3B require the same range as 1B most of the time? It just requires a better arm.
I think it’s worth it to let him practice over there. I don’t think he’d be the worst 3B ever.
Rally Manatee - June 30, 2010
One never knows until one tries it
After seeing Naps’ surprising performance at first, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him play a decent third, but I too am skeptical of his range. Still, it would be something to try.

3 straight complete games for Lee.
I wonder what the pitch-counts were and if Seattle is purposely trying abuse his arm knowing he’ll either be playing for us or the Skankees next year on a fat, long-term contract.

Cliff Lee pitch count
With regards to his three straight CGs:
June 18: 110
June 23: 115
June 29: 115
Highest pitch count this season: 115 (four times)

Isn't this a rebuilding year for them?
Their season is finished already and it’s only June. Why would they want Kaz and those other guys?
They want hot prospects, and lots of them, and maybe a good starting pitcher to take the place of Rowland-Smith.

I never really understood why people hated the OCR's sports coverage
but after reading that tripe by Jeff Miller I now have forged a new found distaste for it.
I’m not asking him to be the Hawk Harrelson of sports writing for the Angels, but sheesh, what team is this guy on?
Yes Vlad is having a good year in a hitters friendly park, but he doesn’t mention that, only that we might not make the postseason, Scioscia is boring, and that the Rangers might ‘bury’ us.
What a choad.
RexTookMyStash - June 30, 2010
He's little more than a troll
He called Angel fans racist once. Said we never really warmed up to Vlad because of it. Of course, as was made clear last night, everybody always LOVED Vlad, but what does that matter when you’re trying to get angry fans to read your worthless column?
firebird81 - June 30, 2010
I thought it was because of Francisco Rodriguez
Not Vlad.
Suboptimal - June 30, 2010
Yep...
it was a seeming indifference of Angel fans to the loss of Frankie Rodriguez to free agency. Few, if any, publicly cried when Frankie left.
There goes that theory, Miller. Lackey left under similar fan indifference.
Downing Rules - June 30, 2010
Maybe we're racist against mouth-breathing Texans
Gorbachav5 - June 30, 2010
It was both. He Francisco was the focus, but he also said the fans never warmed up to Vlad for the same reason. He was building a case that we are racists.

Anyone else
getting sick of the One West Bank commercials? do they really have to play them 15 times per game? that song has been in my head for the last month.
its great that they’re a sponsor for my favorite team, but there is no effing way I would ever bank with them after what they put me through every Angels broadcast. I’d rather listen to Physioc for 3 hours then listen to that song every commercial break.
2pintsofbooze - June 30, 2010
"getting" sick?

Downing Rules - June 30, 2010

2pintsofbooze - June 30, 2010
Exactly!
I refuse to do business with any company that annoys me. I get that they paid to sponsor the crap out of the broadcasts… but mix up the commercials… tell your media buyer not to put your ads so often in the rotation… ANYTHING but what has been going on. They are the 714-tickets of tv commercials.
daze - June 30, 2010
ARGH!
You made me think of the 714-tickets jingle! And THAT made me think of the Kars for Kids jingle!
But yeah, singing the wrong words to a song’s chorus is not a way to earn my business.
Gorbachav5 - June 30, 2010
Can we make it a rule

ryanfea - June 30, 2010
shit, I’d be ok with the same commercial if it didn’t have the same exact 3 word song lyrics sang 6 different times in it (not to mention it has to be the loudest commercial on tv). not only can they not mix up commercials, they can’t get one commercial right. and they expect me to trust them with my money? HA!!!
EFF YOU One West Bank!!!!
2pintsofbooze - June 30, 2010
I am obsessed
with muting the TV at the very beginning of EVERY SINGLE commercial break just to avoid that shit. what’s worse is that it isn’t even a real commercial with real people. It’s just a bunch of stock images and a shitty remake of a shitty song. the point of advertising is to create or have something stick in your head so you’ll remember the product. in their case, I remember that I am annoyed and HATE them for this. they will never have my business.
feNOMINAL - June 30, 2010

The only other blogs I comment on is LL and the Twins blog where I have pretty much been accepted over time.
44FAN - June 30, 2010
I would trade for Lee
Only if it means we give Seattle no more than they gave up to get him. A minor league pitcher who walks too many hitters (Reckling would do) plus a speedy centerfielder with no power named Tyson. (They gave up Gillies, we’d give them Auer).
As for Seattle getting back a blue chip prospect, that is a game I would not play. We’ve really got one guy who fits the bill in Mike Trout, and he should not be traded for anything on the current trade market. Seattle would almost assuredly ask for him, to which the proper response would be a middle finger.
RallyMonkey5 - June 30, 2010
My guess is the haul for Lee is not going to be as big as Seattle thinks for the rental.
Teams are more and more reluctant to give up top prospects for a few months rental. The Mets, Cards, and Twins need him the most, and Texas, but they would need to get their ownership deal done or have to get approval (money from MLB general fund) to pay lee’s remaining salary this year. The MFY don’t really need him so that takes a huge bidder out of the market for Lee until the off season when he becomes a free agent.

I’d trade Conger and Richards for Lee.

Shame on you, WiHa. There is no reason to boost Jeff Miller’s click rate by linking any of his works to this site. As it is, I suspect most of the folks who go to his columns are as nearsighted as Mr Magoo and think they’re going to read something by Sam Miller.
Jeff Miller’s only reason to exist in the sports department of the Reg is to try and make Mark Whicker look reasonable by contrast.

It's not only the Angels who were wrong on Guerrero.
Every other team in baseball was wrong too, and the only reason the Rangers took a chance is because of his career numbers in their launching pad.
Fred Fredrix - June 30, 2010
Good point.
Also, he dropped his asking price and terms as the winter progressed. Texas got a great deal.
It doesn’t surprise me Vlad is hitting so well. I suspect he will continue to at this pace, provided he remains healthy.
sothball - June 30, 2010
I tell you
Last night was the first time I really watched him hit this season, and his bat looks so much quicker than it has the last couple years. That pitch Jepsen threw him was meat, but it was still 95 and a bit above the belt. He swung through those pitches a lot last year.
He’s not back to his 2004 shape, but he looks a lot better. There’s no way the Angels could have predicted that. Texas took a chance on him and it paid off.
Gorbachav5 - June 30, 2010
the thing is
would he be in this good of shape if he had stayed? I doubt it. he needed the ding on his pride for the motivation he had been lacking. you could tell in his face that he’s lost a decent amount of weight since last season. I’m just wondering why Pornzilla isn’t this motivated after being shunned by the Yanks.
btw, anyone think last night’s game would’ve been different with Wood playing 3rd base? Fransden started that rally for us with 2 outs, plus blocked that ball to Elvis nicely. hopefully Wood wasn’t still gleaming from his GS and was paying some attention. hopefully….

Vlad is not a lazy man. He is a proud man and a competitor. After his performance last year he was determined to prove he still had it regardless of WHERE he played. If the Angels had gambled on him, he would have rewarded them the same way.
firebird81 - June 30, 2010
Lee would be great
Cliff Lee or even Dan Haren would be great. Though I don’t think the Angels have the prospects needed to acquire either player but anything is possible.
310Angel - June 30, 2010
I think the Angels do have the prospects, but the problem is if they traded what few we have then we wouldn’t have any left. Trout, Conger, Reckling, Bourjes…after these guys it doesn’t sound like there’s much else to be had. I don’t think the Halos would lose what few possible major league caliber players they have in their system for a 3 month rental of Lee or Haren. it would just shoot them in the foot in the future.
besides, Conger went to my highschool, I’ve been waiting years for him to make the show. it better not be for another team.
2pintsofbooze - June 30, 2010
