For grabbing Frandsen. It was said he would make a solid #2 hitter in the majors by some baseball authority, Baseball America I think. It was smart of the Angels to grab him immediately. That’s foresight.
try and see if Brandon Wood would be more suitable as a pitcher…just like Percy went from catcher to pitcher. Think outside the box….the batters box…lol
…that Scioscia was going to let starters go DEEPER into games til the ’pen figures it out? How many gems (by weaver, seemingly) do we have to white knuckle through the end?
But he gets something that works (ala Shields/K-Rod, circa 2003-07) and he falls in love with the formula. So much so that he has to try and repeat it, no matter the talent.
We don’t have those pieces. We need a new 7 8 9 . . personally, I’m for letting Weaver pitch into the 9th and Having Rodney clean up the rest.
I was among the crowd booing him on Saturday when he came in to pitch the top of the 10th, hopefully that had nothing to do with k-mo’s leg.
Moral of the story: Fans have grown tired of this POS closer.
should become the Lefty specialist the Angels have lacked (well, since Oliver anyway) and they really shouln’t let him touch the 9th. He can’t handle it. No matter how much he THINKS he wants to be the guy, he looks like a scared little girl in every appearance. The Moustache makes it worse, because we all know he’s just TRYING to look intimidating while he shi*s himself.
Fuentes new mainstay – those “balls” that “miss” the strikezone by about three feet – - there seems to be about 1/batter this season. I think he threw BEHIND a guy vs CHI….
When you have Percival coming in and letting Barry Bonds hit one into the stratosphere because you have a two run lead, you can’t take away half a save in that situation.
They should just rework the stat so you get 0 SV if your name is Brian Fuentes.
Yesterday, I was actually defending Fuentes somewhat, saying he deserved a passing grade for the season (i.e., a C or C-). I take it all back.
But you know what? Soth’s bullpen usage is seriously deserving of scorn. Rodney threw one bleeping pitch in the 8th. Why is Fuentes required to pitch the 9th?
Only follows his formula, irrespective of the make-up of the team, or its ability to FIT that mold….its why, even as most of us crapped ourselves every outing, that Fuentes had a career high in saves last year. HEll, I could save 20 games with my wicked changeup – - for Scioscia’s team. It’s why everyone in baseball knew that K-rod’s stat was over inflated. . .
And its partially why our record is only .500. He needs to adjust his style to fit the players he has. He’s starting too, but he holds too tightly to that 7 8 9 role BS. Go with the best pitcher, not the title, Sosh!
Because it’s managerial convention and managers know they would take a ton of shit if they tried something unconventionally and got beat. It’s not right, but every manager does this. It’s tough to single out Scioscia for it.
I whole -heartedly agree, that managers have a can’t make ‘em all happy problem. I also think that Scioscia is the best in the game. I’m just armchair Coaching, as is the norm for us blog fiends.
That said? its nice to see what Ryan’s TRYING to bring BACK to the game in Texas. . no more pitch counts, teach ’em longevity in their arm w/ their work outs, etc. less formulaic, more old school. Curious to see how long it works or if it starts a major trend…

NA1NSXR - June 3, 2010

When was the last time we had a closer that didn't make you nervous?
~MMP~ - June 3, 2010

Automatic Fuentes at the ready
UK Halo - June 3, 2010
ok
just 3 more outs fuentes. lets do this
Drizzy23 - June 3, 2010
Is it me or...
does Jepsen suffer from what I like to Call “Fuentes-itis” (AKA Snidely Whiplash-itis)…Throws it up and says “Oh, god, please don’t hit this…”
He’s been roughed up easily lately, and has that head shakin’ “It’s happening again” thing going each time…
The OC Sports Geek - June 3, 2010
We need Suboptimal and Turk to bring in more stats
about how much more effective Jepsen is than Rodney
Raaddad - June 3, 2010
So the homer by torii the only one allowed? Looks like I am starting to build some points finally
TheAngelsColts - June 3, 2010
3-run Fuentes cushion
please be enough
Raaddad - June 3, 2010
better be
TheAngelsColts - June 3, 2010

and I’ll take those Panther points thank you

Raaddad - June 3, 2010
Fuentes
…Ball 1…Ball 2…Ball 3…
It’s like that old Tootsie pop commercial . . .
“How many licks…”
but instead it’s “How many balls does it take before he serves one up down mainstreet to their power hitter?”
The OC Sports Geek - June 3, 2010
I forgot Jose Guillen existed
jtkelly86 - June 3, 2010

Angels_48 - June 3, 2010
They should
try and see if Brandon Wood would be more suitable as a pitcher…just like Percy went from catcher to pitcher. Think outside the box….the batters box…lol

It may be time to reopen said discussions
Wally's World - June 3, 2010
That won't work so well for Scott Kazmir
unless you want him throwing 270 pitches a night.
Caseys Kiss of Death - June 3, 2010
Didn't someone say recently...
…that Scioscia was going to let starters go DEEPER into games til the ’pen figures it out? How many gems (by weaver, seemingly) do we have to white knuckle through the end?

Not to mention..
I love Scioscia. Period.
The OC Sports Geek - June 3, 2010
Def time to take F-tees out of the 'closer' role

Fuentes sucks
I was among the crowd booing him on Saturday when he came in to pitch the top of the 10th, hopefully that had nothing to do with k-mo’s leg.
Moral of the story: Fans have grown tired of this POS closer.

AlanFalcon - June 3, 2010

angelfan1954 - June 3, 2010
Fuentes...
should become the Lefty specialist the Angels have lacked (well, since Oliver anyway) and they really shouln’t let him touch the 9th. He can’t handle it. No matter how much he THINKS he wants to be the guy, he looks like a scared little girl in every appearance. The Moustache makes it worse, because we all know he’s just TRYING to look intimidating while he shi*s himself.
The OC Sports Geek - June 3, 2010

I think Weaver

The OC Sports Geek - June 3, 2010
You have a point
They should rework the stat so you get .5 SV if you give up any runs.
NA1NSXR - June 3, 2010
Meh....
When you have Percival coming in and letting Barry Bonds hit one into the stratosphere because you have a two run lead, you can’t take away half a save in that situation.
They should just rework the stat so you get 0 SV if your name is Brian Fuentes.
AlanFalcon - June 3, 2010
yup - I don't think he deserves it either.
angelsfan7 - June 3, 2010

AlanFalcon - June 3, 2010
the season is still young & I'm sure Fuentes won't disappoint
Quad Fin Rider - June 3, 2010
Mea Culpa
Yesterday, I was actually defending Fuentes somewhat, saying he deserved a passing grade for the season (i.e., a C or C-). I take it all back.
But you know what? Soth’s bullpen usage is seriously deserving of scorn. Rodney threw one bleeping pitch in the 8th. Why is Fuentes required to pitch the 9th?
jjackflash - June 3, 2010
Scioscia
The OC Sports Geek - June 3, 2010
Because it’s managerial convention and managers know they would take a ton of shit if they tried something unconventionally and got beat. It’s not right, but every manager does this. It’s tough to single out Scioscia for it.
Gorbachav5 - June 3, 2010
Agreed.
The OC Sports Geek - June 3, 2010
well
the bright side is we are .500 again its been a while
Drizzy23 - June 3, 2010

Good job Fuentes, Godd job.

Oddjob?
UK Halo - June 3, 2010

just a sarcastic way to tell Fuentes he sucks, and that Rodney should be the closer
billhune - June 3, 2010
At least Weave got the win today
~MMP~ - June 3, 2010
Did he?
I thought Rodney or Jepsen got it cause of the extra run in the 9th?
HaloBaseball4Life - June 3, 2010
No.
Because we held a lead the whole time.
AlanFalcon - June 3, 2010
Clarification: we never lost the lead, so Weaver got the win.
If they’d tied it, then we scored the go-ahead, it would go to whoever last pitched before we scored the go-ahead.
AlanFalcon - June 3, 2010
counts as a Win
see you tomorrow.
