Hideki Matsui Grand Slam All Angels Need

Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Rockies 2, Angels 4

Star-divide

The Angels only managed four hits off of Rockies starter, and three of those came in the first inning Saturday night. But that third hit was a Grand Slam by Hideki Matsui and the Angels rode a 4-hit effort of Joe Saunders to victory.

Saunders allowed a solo homer in the 3rd to Clint Barmes and a a double to Melvin Mora in the 4th. Mora scored n a Miguel Olivo single. Hey, look at that, Melvin Mora is playing for the Rockies, did not know that. You coulda bet me $20 and allowed me to guess five teams in baseball that Mora was currently on and you'da got that A-Jack Green from me, and probably 95% of all baseball fans. Saundo looked good, throwing 113 pitches in 7 innings, striking out 8 Rockies and only walking one batter.

Fernando Rodney got his 12th hold throwing a scoreless 8th and Brian Fuentes had a stroke of magic when Angels 2B Howie Kendrick caught a line drive by Miguel Olivo with one out in the 9th and doubled off baserunner Melvin Mora at 1B for the final out for the game. It was the 13th Save of the season for Fuentes.

Kevin Frandsen and Torii Hunter had singled in the first, sandwiched around Bobby Abreu reaching 1B n a throwing error. The only other Angels hit was a Juan Rivera single in the 7th inning. It followed the only Angels walk of the game: Hideki Matsui, who was then replaced by Reggie Willits. The Angels failed to score in that inning despite having 1st and 3rd with no outs.

I really wanted to pick joe

but no godzilla, no W

POTG = Hidsui Mateki

Joe has got to give me two in a row before I Panther him again.

While watching the game, even before the final play, I was thinking “man that Howie is a pretty darn good defensive second baseman.” Not that I havn’t thought that before. It’s just that I thought it again. So I thought I would share it.

WIN!

Nice day for a game at the Big A tonight

Not much offense but great to see a win live. Matsui’s grand slam gives him POTG

Matsui wins in my book...

but big props to Saunders for a great game pitched, especially after his recent troubles.

Also, the write-up says 13 pitches for Saunders in 7 innings. He was good, but I don’t think he was THAT efficient…

thanks

it was a 113 pitches, corrected it, and the game flew by like it was 13 pitches.

Howie didn't tag Mora, he doubled him off at first
thanks

missed the actual play and no accounts of it that I found explained it that clearly. CORRECTED.

How dumb are the Red Suxes?

They let Frandsen go (thank you very much) and now Pedroia’s out for 6 weeks.

I know he's a minus defender

but its great to be able to expect production out of the hot corner.

We should try to hit one of these grand slam thingies every game.
See, I told you guys...

Look at the Channel 2 widget on the sidebar. The top three sports stories are

1. Brooklyn Doyers beat Bronx Bummers
2. UCLA thievery
3. World cup soccer

Angels = Clippers

That's okay.

Jim Hill always stumbles through his notes when recapping an Angels game and can’t pronounce
any of the players names anyway. All he knows how to do is dress well and talk about Kobe and the Lakers.

And the D-d-d-d-d-doyers
Nice to have a happy bullpen ending. . .

I like to vent on those two, but I also gotta give em props when they get the job done. Hopefully I’ll be giving more props and less vent in the long hot summer months.

Letssssssssssss vennnnnnnnnnnt
