Angel Stadium All Star Game Commercial...

Payback! Cubs Pound 18 Hits, Beat Angels 12-1 - Bleed Cubbie Blue

Star-divide

One thing I will note regarding use of players: Mike Scioscia, having his starter bounced from the game in the third inning, used reliever Sean O'Sullivan to throw 3.1 innings of relief, even giving him an at-bat (and why Z didn't just throw three strikes, is beyond me -- O'Sullivan did swing and ground out, but he probably wouldn't have done that if the count hadn't been run to 3-2). See, Lou? You can use a pitcher in "long relief"!  Also, Scioscia pulled Bobby Abreu and Torii Hunter after the top of the seventh, even though neither of them had batted in that inning. What a concept! It gave some playing time to players who could use it to stay sharp. Why couldn't Lou use Mike Fontenot today? Or Chad Tracy? Or Kosuke Fukudome? Instead, all eight starting position players played the first eight innings; Tyler Colvin played the field in the ninth after batting for Andrew Cashner and once again getting a hit off a lefty (this time, Brian Fuentes).

I watched almost every inning from this weekend's series with the Cubs, and the difference I noticed about the two managers was Scioscia seemed to be involved in every play, if not every pitch, while Lou Piniella might have died a couple weeks ago and someone forgot to tell him.  Highlights?  Sorry, when you lose 12-1 all you get is one highlight...and that's a defensive one: Hunter makes a nice diving catch in center - Torii Hunter makes a great diving catch in center to rob Starlin Castro of a hit in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Angels to decide Tuesday on whether to send Aybar to DL -  ESPN Los Angeles
Angels manager Mike Scioscia sounded as if he also was leaning toward a DL stint for Aybar. "If a player's not able to go out there and play and if he's at a heightened risk of getting hurt, you're not going to play him," Scioscia said.

Why doesn't he use the same thoughts when dealing with Fuentes?  The way he's been pitching, Fuentes is probably in danger of getting hurt by a line drive off the forehead.  Which brings us to this...

Angels' Brian Fuentes charged with three runs in loss - latimes.com
Fuentes, who hadn't given up a run while converting save opportunities in his previous three outings, was charged with three runs in a 12-1 loss and left with a 6.23 earned-run average. Not that Manager Mike Scioscia, who said Fuentes will remain his closer, seemed all that concerned. "I don't think you're going to look at a reliever's ERA and grade him out on that," Scioscia said. "Especially in a short relief role, a couple bad outings, and it's going to take a long time to get that ERA where it needs to be. But in Brian's role, you look at saves and opportunities and how many times he holds leads, the things that are important to teams winning games. The ball is coming out of Brian's hand well. He just missed some spots, and those guys squared up some balls."

Fuentes: 17.1 IP, 17 hits (of those 17 hits, 11 have gone for extra bases) and 12 earned runs.  The ball may be coming out of his hand well, but it's getting flying off the bats even better.

Wood struggles in return to shortstop  - The Orange County Register
Scioscia said Aybar is "still moving forward" in his recovery but the team might make a decision on that roster spot following Monday's day off. "I think by Tuesday we'll know definitely how close he is and be able to make a determination," Scioscia said. "We should know by then if this thing is moving in the right direction." Even if Aybar goes on the DL, Wood will likely remain the primary shortstop in his absence with Frandsen having some experience there (but more suited to third base). Only Gary Patchett or Hainley Statia in Triple-A offer alternatives. "I think defensively we're going to be OK," Scioscia said. "I think this infield can play at a high enough level to support our pitching."

I was a huge Brandon Wood supporter, but it might be time to give it up.  He looks completely lost at the plate, and now if he can't adequately play defense, what's the point of having him on the club?  Deal him for some bullpen help.

Lindsey Gets $873,000 From Angels - Baseball America
Taylor Lindsey, the supplemental first-round pick who signed on Friday with the Angels, received an $873,000 bonus.

June 21 - BR Bullpen
1975 - In the opener of a doubleheader, the Angels' Frank Tanana strikes out 17 Rangers without a walk during a 4 - 2 win. Texas cops the nitecap, 6 - 5.
1978 - The California Angels' Dave Machemer homers in his first ML at bat during a 5 - 2 win over the Minnesota Twins. Machemer will never hit another long ball.
2001 - Returning to the major leagues after a stint with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League, Jose Canseco starts as the designated hitter for the Chicago White Sox. The former All-Star, who has 446 career home runs (23rd all time), didn't get any offers after being released by the Anaheim Angels in the spring.

Canseco was an Angel?  I wonder why I don't remember that.

I would really like to see a comment from the guy

who was pissed because I claimed that Fuentes is horrible, and he tried to say it was in limited innings (that was when he had 12 innings pitched) And he said, ’What if he has a bunch of good outings in a row and the ERA goes down?" I said, “yeah and what if his ERA goes up?” Fuentes is very weak against righties, he needs to just be a lefty specialist for the rest of the year

Lefty specialist indeed: 2010 R/L splits for Fuentes

vs. RHB
58 PAs (6 doubles, 5 HRs, 8 BBs, 13Ks)
.280/.379/.700

vs. LHB
21 PAs (zero doubles, zero HRs, zero walks, 9 Ks, 1 HBP)
.150/.190/.150
stat source

Small samples but the differences are just too great to be ignored.
The Angels must be aware of these split stats. (At least I hope they’re aware.)

Excellent!

Tx-

yeah Atlantic League shutout

I work for the York Revolution (another team in the league)…and speaking of Newark, Scott Spiezio (as I previously reported) is still playing with them linky

If Brandon Wood were to bat against Brian Fuentes...

OTHER… Wood would strike out on a ball in the dirt, which would then roll to the backstop. In Bad News Bears fashion, Wood would round the bases on the ensuing overthrows and score a Little League “homerun”.

I just assumed Wood would get a HR as everyone else seems to do against Fuentes...

but your way is even better.

No, you've almost got it right.

Wood would get thrown out at the plate.

I wish i got drafted

I want moneis

I actually laughed at the poll answers...

Good stuff.

The commercial was good

Until the giant kid arrived. That was creepy. And then it got a little better when the sand stadium was shown.

I hated all of the typical East coaters in the Commercial... We get it A-rod and jeter will be on the team with Phillies players... GEEZ
That was my problem too, too many Yankees and Phillies.

Although Lincecum and Hunter were cool

Commercial for the all star game or The Mummy Returns, Part 2?
They filmed that commercial on a "WHITES ONLY" beach.

Were is that beach? Ha, ha, not one black or brown person on the beach in that ad. Way to represent Southern California MLB!

Those are all Bud's relatives
Answer to 44 Fan: because it doesn't look cool seeing a bunch of cholos

swimming in the ocean in their jeans. And you typically don’t see too many black people trying to catch a tan.

D.F.E.A.

can they both be Designated For Experimental Assignment…

Which would involve swapping Fuentes and Wood for a week…Wood is so damn scrawny he just looks like a pitcher…and i’d like to see Fuentes pick up a bat

Before I saw the poll responses, I was thinking "black hole?" Ball of suck is better.

I remember the canseco experiment. He came to spring training and stunk it up. He made a bunch of excuses, blamed others and trashed the team when he was released. He never played a regular season game if I remember right… I think he got beat out for a job by edmonds.

Foo Foo Fuentes

It has gotten to the point where I can’t stand to even look at that guy. He sucks so bad, and I think he knows it. That’s the problem. He always has this look on his face like he knows he’s getting away with something, being an MLB pitcher (or at least an AL pitcher). It’s like when someone has cheated their way into a job, but really the dude can’t even read or something. He looks like he wishes he were invisible.

Interesting commercial.

So the Yankees and Red Sox are coming to Anaheim, then?

If Aybar goes to the DL

I still say it will be a mistake to go after an infielder in a trade. Sure, we’re thin, but having Mathis back means Napoli can play 1st more regularly. And Frandsen has been a Godsend, picking up slack at 3B, outperforming Wood.

Our biggest problem is obviously still the bullpen. We really need help here, or it won’t matter if we beat TX out for the division. Frankie2.0 was unhittable for a while, and doesn’t walk as many as the rest of our relievers, but we need a couple more guys like him – dependable.

The problem is, we don’t have any leverage for a trade. Who is anyone going to want? Are we desperate enough to trade our top prospects for middle relief to help us win this year at the expense of a weaker future? I’ve said it before, and I still say I’d rather do the best with what we’ve got, even if we miss the playoffs, and reload for next year.

Michael Kohn!

Michael Kohn! Michael Kohn!

Sure, why not?

What have we got to lose?

Question for those in the "know" about bonuses and salaries for drafted players....

I know you see these kids signing these big bonuses and getting these salaries to play.

Im confused though I thought they got a set amount playing minor league ball.

So when it comes to paying them their bonus and their salaries do they only get that money when they make it up to the big club?

Do they only get a “portion” of their signing bonus in reality?

Thanks for anyone who can clear up the confusion.

I'm pretty sure they get it all...

My friend’s brother was being heavily pursued by several teams out of high school a few years back and went 24th overall this year to the Giants. Back when he was graduating high school, he was discussing offers in the $500K – $750K+ range. My impression from my buddy was that he would have gotten all of that bonus money had he signed at the time.

They get it all

Has nothing to do with making the big club.

Under certain unusual conditions the bonus can be paid over a number of years. Even then however, payments are not tied directly to on-field performance (though they can be tied to actual contract performance, such as the player needing to physically show up).

While a top draft pick can obviously command a windfall bonus, lower round picks get much less – and it will need to last them. Minor league players do get regular salaries but the amounts are tiny. Look here at the Pay Structure of Minor League Baseball Players and imagine living on this income for a couple of years… (And they only get that for 5 months a year!)

if they had no bonuses or signing iussues

MLB could pay what they are paying now in minor league salaries spread out for everyone… seems they would prefer that cost certainty.

Your profile pic.

Isn’t that the same pic that dude with the lame post you deleted about how Angels fans are racist poop heads after we swept the freeway series? What happened there? Was that someone else abusing his account, or was he for real? Did he get banned?

The bonus makes it or breaks it for these kids.

That’s why they hold out for the biggest bonus they can get (I remember Weaver holding out for a long time). That’s what they really live off of because the monthly money isn’t enough.

And in other news

Baseball Prospectus currently has the Rangers as the safest bet to make the playoffs.

link

Yeah well...

I have a strong feeling that unless both teams shore up their pitching, the winner of the AL West will not be going past Tampa Bay or New York in the ALDS. Whether it’s the Angels or Rangers that get knocked out in the first round isn’t important because without improvements, it’s going to happen.

Tampa won't be in the playoffs.
Yeah, yeah

There’s no doubt that the Rangers’ rampage through that Powder Puff tournament that is their pre-ASB schedule proves that they are the new hot-shit baseball dynasty.

Considering the Angels had the single toughest early schedule in baseball (and, granted, stunk), and one of the toughest pre-ASB schedules overall, I don’t find Texas’ 3.5 game lead all that impressive.

Wouldn’t shock me too much if the Rangers got reasonably far out front this month. They’ll have to prove what they are eventually and are ripe to be reeled back in through August and September. They’ll have to play some real baseball, against some real baseball teams.

I love those beaches in Anaheim...

$50 says the All-Star coverage features shots of non-Orange County landmarks like Santa Monica and Hollywood as well as discussion about the proximity of the Dodgers and the Angels second-rate status.

What? No takers? I guess no one wants to be against a sure thing.

I was just talking

about that with my buddy yesterday…it’s gonna be a real f**ked up situation bczu of what you said.

Well when you market yourself as Los Angeles...........

thats kinda what people think.

Touché.
Started before that...

If you look at your DVD copies of the complete 2002 World Series, games 1 through 7, they showed many more images of Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles than of anything related to Orange County. Maybe Disneyland was shown? I cannot recall.

Yup. Arte's cool with that.

If the Angels are lumped in with other must-see L.A. area tourist locations and events, he’s not going to be upset. That way, all the tourists itineraries will look like this:

Day 1) go to Disneyland
Day 2) go see a dude roller skate in a thong
Day 3) go to an Angels game

Orange County is Suburbia USA

Just like most of So-Cal. There’s not much I can think of that people would recognize nationally as being from Orange County. Disneyland, Angel Stadium, maybe Knotts or the Huntington Beach Pier/Boardwalk. That’s about it though.

Orange County has always been a suburb of LA. The only true LA baseball team also resides there. No problem with that.

BruinHalo. We are the Los Angeles Angels

so filiming Santa Monica and Hollywood are in play.

Angels and Fox marketing departments. Thank you for helping the Orange County economy outside of the stadium and Disneyland.

Eh, i thought the commercial was pretty damn cool.
I liked the stadium coming out of the sand
Where are the naked shea hillenbrand pics!?
Hostility abounds!
I just saw the add on TV for the first time.

There are obviously different versions: The one I saw had Ichiro brushing the sand of his jersey and smiling after crashing through the wall, instead of ARod. Linsecum and Howard were not in the version I saw.

The commercial was on Fox Sports West.

I saw that one too.
