Under the “rules of the game” the Umpire is the arbiter of whether that physical occurs. Mistakes are made all the time. But under the “rules of the game” he was safe.
There is no appeal of a judgement call, only a misinterpretation of the rules.

The RULES of the game state that if the ball beats the runner, the runner is out. This is so transparently clearly my point that your arguing to the contrary is nothing short of obnoxious. I’m not stating the game should be rewritten, or that Selig should overturn it. I’m stating that the runner was out, by definition of an out. The game, free of umpires put in place to make calls, still has a rule book. And the rulebook has definitions for when an out should be called. The umpire’s place is to properly state a call. A ball over a fence in fair territory 450 feet away is a home run by the rule book, whether an umpire signals it or not.
The physical act constituting an out occurred. Whether or not it was called that way is so clearly and blatantly not my point. So stop.

The RULES of the game state that if the ball beats the runner, the runner is out. This is so transparently clearly my point that your arguing to the contrary is nothing short of obnoxious. I’m not stating the game should be rewritten, or that Selig should overturn it. I’m stating that the runner was out, by definition of an out. The game, free of umpires put in place to make calls, still has a rule book. And the rulebook has definitions for when an out should be called. The umpire’s place is to properly state a call. A ball over a fence in fair territory 450 feet away is a home run by the rule book, whether an umpire signals it or not.
The physical act constituting an out occurred. Whether or not it was called that way is so clearly and blatantly not my point. So stop.
