Final score in the second city: Angels 7, Cubbies 6

The Angel scoring was highlighted by home runs from Torii Hunter and Howie Kendrick, and as to Wrigley custom, both home run balls were tossed back onto the field. Hunter's laser shot was the first home run hit by an Angel player at Wrigley Field. Today's game also was the first game back for catcher Jeff Mathis who was returning from the disabled list after suffering a broken wrist.
The Cubs tried to get back into the game in the ninth inning when Francisco Rodriquez walked the first two batters before giving up a long home run to Tyler Colvin. Fernando Rodney relieved Rodriquez and quickly got two graoundball outs, but gave up a huge blast to Derrick Lee to bring the Cubs to within one run. However, Rodney was able to induce another ground out, this time to third baseman Kevin Frandsen to end the game.

Would have won 7-2 if we had Michael Kohn.
Halowood - June 18, 2010

Thank God for Cubbie errors

When Michael Kohn gets a strike out, we can coin the term
He just got Kohn’d

Nice looking out over at LL
When the Angels win the West, I want Jeff Sullivan GONE!
blast21dave - June 18, 2010
He's pretty much gone already.
All he has left to be witty about is how much he can’t stand us since they’ve already conceded this season.
His blog is like Ian Snell, a non-factor to baseball relevancy.
RexTookMyStash - June 18, 2010
I love how they tried to compare
Saundo to Ian Snell, then Saundo goes and tosses a CG and Snell is on a career death-spiral. Oh well, haters gonna hate right?
blast21dave - June 18, 2010
He will still claim us as an awful team
even as we do a victory lap around Angels Stadium with the World Series trophy.
ryanfea - June 18, 2010
Good ole Jeffe banned me from LL awhile back for posting into a section of a thread that you had to read all the way to the bottom of to know that it was closed...wtf is that? Look at the time/date. All I had done is stick up for Adenhart once again...
I had been blocked from posting which I took as a ban previously (my bad)…it was a warning or some such…I was banned for sticking up for Nick!
Whatever Jeff…you obviously spend a lot of time reading Halos Heaven! Closet Angel fan are you?
K3YEROUT - June 18, 2010
some posts close after a certain time period...
is that the “closed” you are talking about?
Downing Rules - June 18, 2010
No, he decided that a topic in the middle of a thread was not to be commented on anymore...
and that closure was down at the bottom of the thread and I commented in the middle of it and kept reading down. When I got done reading the thread or series of replies I got to the part about it being a closed topic. He was just looking for a reason to ban me…

Fuentes is injured?
According to CBS Sports
“It was Rodney’s sixth save in as many chances since taking over for injured closer Brian Fuentes.”
So what’s the word on Fuentes?
Fan Since 1981 - June 18, 2010
who cares?
He is injured that is good for my blood pressure
DAD OF VLAD - June 18, 2010
Rodney was looking like Fuentes out there
like a Righty version of him
blast21dave - June 18, 2010
He cut himself with a mustache comb
RexTookMyStash - June 18, 2010
He's not injured
They’re just saying that Rodney hasn’t had a save SINCE Fuentes’ injury.
Slyintine - June 18, 2010
I missed the game
And given the team’s recent spate of injuries, the minute I saw the word’s “injured” and “Fuentes”, I figured another Angel had gone down.
Fan Since 1981 - June 18, 2010
hahaha me 2, thats the reason im on this page searching for info on Fuentes “injury” lol that article was very poorly phrased, I also thought we lost Fuentes
robi s - June 18, 2010
Thanks for the clarification.

A professional journalist
Should be expected to express himself clearly. What do they go to J-school for, anyway? And where was the copy editor? Oh, mercy nurse!
rspencer - June 18, 2010
10-4 on that
I regularly read (or listen to on TV news) copy with mangled metaphors, unclear antecedents and a complete lack of subject-verb agreement.
Once upon a time, a “newspaper” or “television news department” had a person with the title of “editor”, whose job it was to make sure the writers used proper English and clear sentences, so that the “audience” would know just what in the hell the “story” was about.
At the very least, an “editor” would go through the “copy” and strike the excessive use of “quotation marks”. But apparently, this is no longer “the case”.

Fuentes
Was standing around the bullpen mound when Rodney went in. I’m guessing he was available and would have pitched if Rodney let a few more on and got to a lefty.
RallyMonkey5 - June 18, 2010
Fuentes was warming up
in case Rodney let anybody else on base
ryanfea - June 18, 2010
Thanks for the update
I know Fuentes doesn’t inspire much confidence due to his high 80s fastball and a propensity to give up the long ball. But his K/9 rate of 11.34 allows him to remain a viable candidate for high leverage situations.
Fan Since 1981 - June 18, 2010
About Francisco Rodriguez Part 2
It’s unfortunate that things fell apart for him in the 9th inning after a 1-2-3 eighth inning in which the Cubs didn’t even get the ball out of the infield.
Prior to today, K-Rod Part 2 had been absolutely ELECTRIC.
K/9: 13.06
BB/9: 0.87
GB%: 72.2%
ERA: 0.87
FIP: 0.80
xFIP: 1.20
Avg. Fastball: 94.3 mph
Granted its only 10.1 innings of work, but those numbers above are as good as it gets.

Fan Since 1981 - June 18, 2010
his last two or 3 outings, K-Rod 2.0 has been shaky
He’s not a major league reliever yet. But he’s definitely shown he might be there soon.
Halowood - June 18, 2010
Eighth inning: ELECTRIC
Ninth inning: GASSED.
And I was STEAMED.
rspencer - June 18, 2010
Pitch him one inning at a time
And let him dominate. K-Rod II has a chance to be next year’s closer when Fuente’s option fails to vest.
RallyMonkey5 - June 18, 2010
kinda sticks it to those who blow up at Soth for not letting a guy pitch more than one inning out of the pen huh?
norcaliangelsfan - June 18, 2010
Nice to see Mathis back, but his face looked weird.
I was thinking maybe he had eye-black on before the game, then decided to wipe it off. Either that or he became a zombie in AAA.
Rally Manatee - June 18, 2010
I was thinking he had a bruise below his left eye, but concluded it was just dirt.
Mathis also looked very thin, or are we just used to seeing Bobby Wilson so much lately behind the plate?
44FAN - June 18, 2010
Benedict Arnold at it again!
he says that he enjoys the run support “something that he hasnt had much of most of his career”
Angels_48 - June 18, 2010
His run support is his excuse
to be a shitty pitcher
ryanfea - June 18, 2010
Bad thing to say.

What an asshole.

man this bullpen is gonna be the death of me.
norcaliangelsfan - June 18, 2010
hahah if only we could get our 2002 bullpen, if we had a lead going into the 7th, we would be autmatic for the W….of course that was the year of the rally and never having leads going into the 7th lol
robi s - June 18, 2010
Over at Bleed Cubbie Blue, the Cubs fans are whining about how can the Angels score runs
without hitting the ball out of the infield, and noting that Scioscia is always on his feet talking to his players in the dugout and sending out endless hand signs directing the plays on the field while Lou Pinella sits in the Cubs dugout doing nothing barely paying attention to what was going on in the game. They can’t understand why their players can’t execute fundamental plays like the Angels do. Tee-hee.
44FAN - June 18, 2010
They are terrible defensively...
If I was a Cubs fan I would be embarrassed!
K3YEROUT - June 18, 2010
Missed the game completely. Damn job.
Sounds like it was another near meltdown by our BP. I’ve gotten so used to that, it really doesn’t surprise me.
halofolife - June 18, 2010
I am glad we won, and glad Kaz got another W.
I am concerned about his K/BB ratio, and BB/9. He is a decent enough starter most of the time, but for the money he is making it’s pretty silly. His ratios are poor. I can hardly imagine his ERA getting below 4.50. The more likely scenario is it stays at 5.00 or more.
Wally's World - June 18, 2010
Panther goes to Sosh
for having the balls to bring in Rodney over Fuentes with all the righties due up. It’s clearly the right move and I’m glad he can finally admit that. Hopefully we’ll see him play match up more and more throughout the season.
