With the Angels and the city of Anaheim working together well on the All Star Game, will the city of Anaheim soon be relinquishing their claims to the contractually obligated "of Anaheim" appendage in the team name?
A rumor spreading around town is that the Angels will be trading the city the stadium naming rights in order to dump the appendage off of the team's name. Instead of "The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim playing at Angels Stadium of Anaheim" it will be "The Los Angeles Angels playing at Anaheim Stadium" ... can the Carpino regime finally triumph?
Word is it will happen in time for the city to receive the benefit of ANAHEIM STADIUM being blasted all about the universe during the All Star Game. Stay tuned.

people will still made lame jokes about it............
just like they will continue to say we are lucky.
Comes with the territory.

But there WOULD be a turning point
People have enough amnesia, and are ignorant enough about SoCal’s geography, that in a short period of time the physically impossible title we’ve been saddled with for five years would be all but forgotten by most of the market. And that’s what this has always been about – finding a market more suited to what this team deserves.
In the end, if the team gets a respectable name in the deal, does anyone care that much what the name of the stadium is? I don’t care if the stadium is called Uncle Dan’s Touchin’ Barn as long as the full, legal team name doesn’t make me wince to hear in its entirety.
Zoe Necrosis - June 14, 2010
So over this whole thing. The city of Anaheim is dead to me.
Lose the “of Anaheim” and keep it Angel Stadium. I am Angel fan going on 35 years now and I have never once rooted for the city of Anaheim. In fact, don’t even like driving through the city unless I have to get to the ballbark. KEEP IT ANGEL STADIUM!
THE VOICE - June 13, 2010
I want to go back to to the Halos being the
California Angels. Screw all of the marketing, politics and the rest of the bulls**t. When did baseball become a “product” instead of a sport for the fans to enjoy?
HalosFanInNorCal - June 13, 2010
WHEN?
1989 is the answer to your question. After the owners were found guilty of collusion.
Rev Halofan - June 13, 2010
this is new to me
I remember the Doyers winning in ’88 and I remember Bo hitting a HR in 1989 (am I right on that?), but not much else. Have any info on this?

that must have been the day that the music died.
HalosFanInNorCal - June 14, 2010
I guess we are most comfy with the name we first knew
That’s why I was happy when they changed the name back to Los Angeles. But I don’t have the emotional investment in the matter that many do. I just figure that since Arte made a zillion dollars in the advertising business, he must know more about it than I do. As a fan, I most enjoy the team when they are contending, and if the name change has made that goal more attainable, than I’m all for it.
rspencer - June 13, 2010
Arte and Zillion Dollars
Actually Gene Autry was the one who created the media empire that Arte would like to have.
And he decided it was best for the not to have anything to do with the City of Los Angeles. Did his decision pay off? The 1966 Angels are one of the few teams to lead the AL in attendance while having a losing record.
Is Arte’s decision working? We will find out when the Angels starting losing just how many new fans we have in LA, or whether our fans are from California.
Barca - June 14, 2010
+1 on anaheim
the city needs to be leveled and turned into a parking lot, with angel stadium smack dab in the middle.
clover_black - June 13, 2010
Hey! I live in Anaheim.
It has its charms.
opiejeanne - June 13, 2010
And I live in Elysian Park, in Echo Park.
Enemy territory, and a die-hard Angels fan.
I’ll take LA Angels just fine. I’d take California Angels one better. That’s wear my fanaticism began.
Turks Teeth - June 13, 2010
And f*ck spelling too. I wear my where w/ equal pride.
Turks Teeth - June 13, 2010
Ok.
My comment was in response not to the name change but rather to clover_black’s comment that Anaheim should be bulldozed.
opiejeanne - June 13, 2010
No problem with that.
Turks Teeth - June 13, 2010
I figured.
opiejeanne - June 13, 2010
I lived in Echo Park for a couple years.
I miss Belmont Tunnel.
Funke5ive - June 13, 2010
ehhhh...
too many “shaved heads, plaid shorts, knee high socks” wandering aimlessly.
Fine opie, not bulldozed… how about neutron bombed ? :D
clover_black - June 13, 2010
Maybe it's because of Current Events, but I'm just not in the mood right now.
One of the things I love best about living in Anaheim is that Angels Stadium is nearby. It takes me about 15 minutes to get there.
Yeah, my house was/is for sale but I am leaving with great reluctance…. maybe. If the sale falls through, which it kind of looks like it will and I’m not sad to stay another year. We’ll get to eat the tomatoes we grew and the neighborhood will probably have a block party just because we’re staying.
I’m a little emotional about this place. I love my house and garden, I love my neighborhood, and I love my neighbors most of whom are Mexican-Americans, which I’m pretty sure is the demographic you describe but I never see those guys around here.
opiejeanne - June 13, 2010
Save the Frank Gehry skating rink please.

14 year resident of Anaheim…
BigBangRobbDawgg - June 13, 2010
We've been here 7 years.
opiejeanne - June 13, 2010
Lived in Anaheim almost my whole life
I don’t agree with all the decisions the city has made (Anaheim Downtown? Nice try, guys.), but I have really enjoyed living here. This is a good, diverse city, and I’m proud to call myself a resident.
I wish it would go back to the Anaheim Angels, but if Arte is unwilling to do that (and of course he is), than I’m okay with dropping the ridiculous “of Anaheim.” I’m glad Anaheim will get naming rights to the stadium
Gorbachav5 - June 13, 2010
I agree with everything you said there.
opiejeanne - June 13, 2010
well said
BigBangRobbDawgg - June 13, 2010
I hope this is true about the name
This seems like the most logical solution to a silly problem that needs to finally go away.
But I’m a degenerate so I voted for no drinking in the parking lot.
dmhead - June 13, 2010
Listen ... this is simple ...
If Arte can make more money from marketing by calling the team “Angels of the Third Ring of Hell” I’d be for it. More money means more and better players, cheaper ticket prices etc. etc.
This is a business decision made by business people for business reasons. Let them make the decisions, but ultimately they are responsible for making the team profitable and keeping it that way. And I trust they will do that.
LazorkoRules - June 13, 2010
a yankee fan would disagree with
“cheaper ticket prices”
clover_black - June 13, 2010
They are responsible for bringing the fans of Anaheim/OC a ring, for god sakes we are the trAdition thru thick and thin…not LA.
The thought of a WS parade in LA makes me want to Vomit.
Funke5ive - June 13, 2010
I think if there was a WS parade in LA for the Angels...
There would be some serious fan mutiny. I can’t believe Arte would even think of doing that. This fan would be flipped out, rabid dog level angry if that happened. I don’t think I would be alone.
hbhalofan - June 13, 2010
that has never been seriously broached as a reality
other than by talk radio fuggtards looking to anger up the callers.
Oh, but it is the bloggers that are blamed for such bullshit.
Rev Halofan - June 13, 2010
Agreed
I don’t think it would happen, Arte isn’t stupid. Just saying it would be rotten IF it did.
I still would like to have Hud on some sort of pre/post game, TV or radio, both work for me. Not the same without the enthusiasm he brings, and I enjoy the goofy Hud-isms.
hbhalofan - June 13, 2010
Last time I checked Arte owned KLAA

“What’s a blog?”
Rev Halofan - June 13, 2010
A place where yellow rivers run freely

Funke5ive - June 13, 2010
you mean to tell me

Rev Halofan - June 13, 2010
How could an Angels World Series parade have any real credibility as representing all of Los Angeles
unless the procession passed by The ESPN ZONE and
Staples CenterThe Temple of Kobe on Figueroa Street, then ending up at the hallowed USC campus?44FAN - June 13, 2010
Ok, much as I like some of the things mentioned
I threw up a little in my mouth just reading what you wrote.

South Coast Parking lot maybe.

Ew.

closer to Arte's pad
Rev Halofan - June 13, 2010
Don't care. Still ew.
Besides, wouldn’t Fascist Island be closer to Arte’s pad?
opiejeanne - June 13, 2010
i don't the "upscale" side of the OC that well
I don’t make it behind the curtain all that often any more…
Rev Halofan - June 13, 2010
The Orange Curtain.
I laughed the first time I heard the term but it’s true.
I’m not sure where Arte lives, but Fashion Island is farther…. south? Southwest? I think it’s in Newport Beach, the part of Irvine closest to Newport.

It's Newport

Commander_Nate - June 14, 2010
Is that also where Arte lives?
opiejeanne - June 14, 2010
It wouldn't surprise me
I thought he lived in Arizona most of the time, but he’s got enough money to live in multiple places if he wanted to.
Commander_Nate - June 14, 2010
New slogan:
Arte Moreno — The Space-Time Continuum means nothing to him
red floyd - June 15, 2010
This is just a retarded statement, he is responsible for bringing the Angels fans a ring, not just to the people of 1 county/city. If having the parade start in LA & end in Anaheim brings more attention & revenue to the franchise, I’m all for it.
Seik1177 - June 14, 2010
correction
Arte didn’t bring the ring; Disney owned them at the time.
yeswecan - June 14, 2010
Poorly phrased on my part
I was trying to say that it is his responsibility to get championships for all Angels fans & not just those in Anaheim/OC
Seik1177 - June 14, 2010
Bringing Hud back to the broadcasts
is still top priority
Raaddad - June 13, 2010
Absolutely...
Let’s end the Hudler Hex already. I like the new guy… let’s just replace Gubi with Hud.
thetooth - June 14, 2010
You se my name. I love the city I was born and raised in.
I am an Angels fan. I’d rather go back to reppin California much more than Los Angeles. Matter of fact I always say LA stands for loving Anaheim. The name now is just foolish. My main concern is the team staying in the city long term.
Anaheim71420 - June 13, 2010 via mobile
I would say
California Angels and they Play at Angel Stadium Of Anaheim
M.Napoli For President in 2012 - June 13, 2010
Anaheim had its 15 minutes.
It was a largely accidental historical moment largely driven by a brief convergence of corporate marketing and municipal boosterism. It lasted seven years. It means nothing outside of the 350k folks that live within the city limits. Even Disney is mostly done — I’m a father, and I have little appetite to take my tyke to that spiritless moneypit of lost stepsons in sweaty mascot costumes.
I attached my young self to the Angels in the late 70s/early 80s b/c they were the California Angels, and I lived 300+ miles north of Anaheim in the middle of California. I rediscovered them in 1999 after years of punk rock and collegiate wanderlust because I had a shit car with only an AM radio and an hourlong commute to work. The fact that they were the Anaheim Angels at that point was just a snort-hungry sidebar.
The Angels are named after LA, and they began the franchise there. There are 30x more people in LA County than Anaheim. If Arte wants more diehard fans like me, who affiliate more with California and Los Angeles than Anaheim, he’s sensible to divest from the Anaheim niche.
No shots at the people that live in Anaheim — we all have to call somewhere home — but Anaheim itself is a declining tourist trap in a bland maze of stripmalls and freeways, and its most singular historical moment outside of the Disney Bros laying anchor is that it was the proposed capital of the Ku Klux Klan in the 20s.
Time to move on.
Turks Teeth - June 13, 2010
KKK in the 20s?
I thought that was Huntington Beach.
Not too far off in more recent years. We had Karl Karcher, the man who brought you John Schmitz. We live about 3 blocks from the Karcher house.
opiejeanne - June 13, 2010
They used to call the city Klanaheim.
Anaheim71420 - June 14, 2010 via mobile
Isn't it Anacrime now?
Commander_Nate - June 14, 2010
Never mind, I found an article.
I’ve only lived here 7 years and haven’t seen that type of activity here. I knew about Huntington Beach because I can remember reading about it years ago, and it’s still talked about there.
opiejeanne - June 14, 2010
Reply fail, meant to modify my question to Nate.
opiejeanne - June 14, 2010
Those would be two distinctly different neighborhoods.
Karcher’s street is all respectability, nice old houses from the 20s and 30s, lovingly maintained.
The stuff that gets referred to as criminal activity happens some distance from here.
This is a big town. My neighborhood is a nice one, go a mile west and it’s not so nice.
shrug
If we started bulldozing entire towns because it had some nasty neighborhoods we’d all be living in tents.
opiejeanne - June 14, 2010
When was that?
opiejeanne - June 14, 2010
It was probably a while ago
I have no idea if it’s still known as that now. I just know the name was floating around when I was in high school/middle school.
If it’s any consolation, the town I grew up in was the meth capital of the country for a while if memory serves me right.
Californication, baby!
Commander_Nate - June 14, 2010
I, for one, adore Disneyland.
Any place that can suck $9 a piece out of the wallets of 350 pound Arkansas toddlers and their siblings for a candied apple in order to subsidize a nice evening of me sitting on a park bench with great security, fresh flowers, live ragtime, and a decent firewaorks show is alright by me.
Stirrups - June 14, 2010
Heh. I've seen those toddlers. Worse, I've seen their parents. .
I still love the place.
And my youngest was one of those people inside the costume for several years. The majority of “fuzzies”(costume characters who wear a head), are girls, mostly late teens/early twenties. Guests in the park, adults, tend to forget there’s a real person inside the costume.
She was Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Stitch, Lilo, Pinocchio, PIglet, and a couple of other tiny characters. She was also a “face” character, played Alice and Wendy.
opiejeanne - June 14, 2010
I don't care anymore ...
As long as My team keeps playing like they have been the past decade. Also my team needs to wear(where)ing red, and have a haloed A on top of their(there) cap. The rest is moot.
If fans of other team choose to make fun of my teams affiliation, they can say what ever they want, so be it.
Why do you think Arte has ANGELS on the road uni’s fronts?
Go Halos, Go Angels, Go Team
eyespy - June 13, 2010
ANGELS is on the front of the road uni's because LOS ANGELES ANGELS OF ANAHEIM won't fit
Fred Fredrix - June 14, 2010
Consumption of alcohol is obviously the most important issue
I want to drink on the streets and in the parking lot again like a free man!
Commander_Nate - June 13, 2010
Glad to see we all want the Wonder Dog back...
I miss his enthusiasm either on tv, post-game, pre-game anything, he just added that spark…
Billy Mac sucks.
Neekohlai - June 14, 2010
It's probably the acme of foolishness to ask this
But can we know what the source of these rumors are?
Or at least are they, by nature, a personally trusted and reliable source? Or some yo-yo from the interwebs?
Zoe Necrosis - June 14, 2010
Also
Are there any Rasputin-like characters we can endorse to psychically make this deal go through? In order to put a period on the silliest footnote in Angels history?

hudler!

Yeah. Now that I've come to appreciate Victors oddball sense of humor, he'd be a perfect fit with Hud.
