Boston Red Sox sweep Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - FOX Sports on MSN
The Angels were swept in a four-game series at Fenway Park for the first time since 1967. They are 0-7 on a road trip that ends with three games in Seattle, and have lost seven in a row for the first time since the final seven games of the 2001 season. ``Those guys are taking this streak hard and that's part of the problem,'' said Angels manager Mike Scioscia, who held a team meeting after the game. ``We have to turn the page. We are carrying ghosts from this week. I thought that was always the strength of this group, but guys are starting to press because of something that happened three days ago.' "The way we started the game was awesome,'' Abreu said. ``They started to score runs and we laid down.''
I think Abreu's quote has more truth in it than does Scioscia's. As an outsider watching the games on TV, I don't get the feeling that the players are "pressing" or trying too hard, but rather are playing like they expect to lose. The defense looks sluggish and the pitching seems tentative as the pitchers nibble at corners and look like they're afraid to "announce their presence with authority". It appears the Angels have forgotten how to play their style of baseball - aggressive base running and solid pitching. I'd say this team is playing like a bunch of girls, but I wouldn't want to insult the girls. Oh, here's the highlights...Napoli's dinger cuts the deficit to one run and Kendrick plates a pair with a long double.
Angels-Mariners Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
While the losses keep piling up for the Los Angeles Angels on their current road trip, the Seattle Mariners are suffering the same results at home. Los Angeles (12-18) had won three in a row and four of six on the road prior to a 10-game trip where it's lost seven straight to Detroit and Boston. Seattle (11-17), meanwhile, had won seven of nine at Safeco before losing the first six of its current nine-game homestand. That might not be easy while facing Mariners ace Felix Hernandez (2-2, 3.10 ERA). Though Hernandez has dropped his last two starts, he's 1-0 with a 0.42 ERA in his last three versus the Angels. Hernandez, 4-5 with a 4.20 ERA in 16 starts against Los Angeles, had his string of 18 consecutive quality starts snapped after back tightness forced him to leave after giving up five runs in 4 1-3 innings of a 6-3 home loss to Texas on Saturday. The Angels, who've posted a 7.83 team ERA during the losing streak, turn to Jered Weaver (3-1, 3.19). He allowed four runs in 4 2-3 innings of a 5-1 loss at Detroit on Sunday. "One of those games you have to take with a grain of salt,'' said the right-hander, who's 8-3 with a 4.61 ERA in 14 starts versus Seattle.
This is going to be an interesting series as both teams are mired in slumps. It's probably going to come down to which team will suck the least.
Major League Baseball GMs are underpaid - Ken Rosenthal - FOX Sports on MSN
The GM is arguably the most important person in any organization — more important, perhaps, than even a superstar player.
This post is about the salaries that major league general managers make, but it made me wonder why isn't there any comments coming from the Angels front office? I agree with Rosenthal's comment that the GM is the most important person in the organization, but why isn't any of the local media covering the Angels asking Tony Reagins anything? How accountable for this team is Reagins?
MORE LINKS AFTER THE BREAK...

Angels’ Mike Scioscia sticks with lineup, for a reason - BostonHerald.com
The Angels would have preferred to play a day game in Fenway Park [map], and teams often schedule day games on getaway days as a courtesy to the visiting club. But the Angels have been notorious for scheduling 7 p.m. starts on getaway days - though they moved several of those starts to 4 p.m. this season - so it’s not surprising the Red Sox didn’t give them a break.
Pretty interesting.
Same nine guys, same order - - ESPN Los Angeles
Manager Mike Scioscia met with his coaches Thursday afternoon and talked over multiple new looks, but they’re all being stymied right now by a shoulder injury to utility infielder Maicer Izturis. Izturis is the Angels’ only other viable leadoff man and he’s the only player they would consider playing every day at third base. Izturis hurt himself diving for a ball Monday night while playing third. He said it aggravated an injury to his labrum that he had surgically repaired when he was in the minors in 1999.
Since when did Maicer Izturis become such a integral part of this team? And he's not the only other viable option to bat leadoff (why not try Abreu in that spot with Kendrick hitting second?). It just seems like Scioscia's trying to prove a point by not making any changes. Kind of like, "This team is good enough to win as it is, why try something different just because we're losing."
Wood's stance tweak pays quick dividend - angelsbaseball.com
"I've spread out about four or five inches," Wood said. "It's subtle, not too much of a change. It gives me balance and allows me to get into my lower half more."
This has so much potential to be funny, but I'm just not in the mood.

So don't watch.
Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Their struggles… Wouldn’t… Lose.
I normally never correct sloppy grammar, spelling and punctuation, but this entertains me more than reproving defeatism and entitlement.

I am tired of the struggles this year as well.
and I think the Mariners take 2.
But, I am not tired of watching the team. As a fact of matter, I am decked out in my Halos gear at work on “casual Friday.” ALL RED. GO HALOS!

Well, I AM TIRED OF WATCHING THIS TEAM
LOSE!

WAAH!
Felix will be on tonight and Blow Squanders is pitching tomorrow. So, don’t watch today or tomorrow. Tune in for the victory on Sunday, DRjr.
Downing Rules - May 7, 2010
Hahahahahaha
I actually laugh at how pathetic the Halos are right now. Makes all of the off season moves look like the Upper Management made some big mistakes. Since we are all talking about NOW, and the Halos suck now.

Regarding the start times for those "getaway days"
I thought the scheduling was done by MLB?
The home teams determine the start times?
norcaliangelsfan - May 7, 2010
Yes they do and the Sux are assholes
Remember they denied the Angels hot water once upon a time
hauldog - May 7, 2010
Actually they denied access to the weight room and hot water.

This team most definitely looks like it could suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

I think Abreu is right. Scioscia is right about the pitchers, but the position players are just lifeless, like they expect it to fall apart, so why should they even try.
firebird81 - May 7, 2010
fitting pic with the drill Sgt from "Full Metal Jacket"

SCHalo - May 7, 2010
I hear all this talk of Abreu batting leadoff
It seems he is struggling too. His ‘great eye of the strike zone’ isn’t great so far this year and he is not hitting (in his defense, no one is hitting) So why is he a leadoff guy.
Domino effect people… When a couple players start hitting, the people who bat in front of them start getting fastballs for strikes because pitchers don’t want them on base for hot hitters. This gets those hitters in hitters counts, which improves everyone.
Baseball is a streaky game and a domino effect game. Just like how we saw the pitching staff respond when one guy had a great game.
Sinatrasratpack - May 7, 2010
Figgy sucked in the postseason
but so far without him, it doesn’t look like we are going to even taste the post-season.
Dono Romantico - May 7, 2010
He's sucking now too
He’s gotten a lot of walks, but I don’t think he would have been much help either the way he’s playing at the moment
Raaddad - May 7, 2010
isn't getting a lot of walks a good thing for a lead-off guy to do?????
Dono Romantico - May 7, 2010
True
and when he gets on he can create much havoc on the basepaths.
The bigger issue for them is that they don’t have anyone to drive him in currently, but then either do we at the monemt (at least not very often)
Raaddad - May 7, 2010
He also strikes out looking quite a bit...
Downing Rules - May 7, 2010

Scioscia

LAASurfin - May 7, 2010
Jim: If you recall during spring training, there were two lineup variations … one that had Aybar leading off and the other that had Izturis. The “tweak” you are proposing (Abreu at leadoff) is a major shakeup and one that has yet to be tested. I think if the streak continues for a few more games, Scioscia may be open to trying Bobby at the leadoff spot. But, until then, I wouldn’t bank on it as it has not been something they tried in ST.

Here I was ready to eat crow for my preseason predictions for this team
I even looked up a few good crow recipes like flame broiled, a thai green curry crow, crow kebobs, the book “Stewin with Crows”, even barbecue crow pizza. Now it looks like my preseason rant is coming true right before my eyes. How many stolen bases do we have so far this year? Where is the speed on the bases which makes opposing pitchers make mistakes in the strike zone? Pitchers are not worried about Matsui, Rivera, Abreu, or napoli stealing bases. And the preseason quote of “We have the ability to really drive the ball”, the only places they have been “driving the ball” is into the defensive gloves.
steelgolf - May 7, 2010
Well, I hope you're happy
I’m so depressed after these games now that Rad Pup doesn’t even make me smile any more… :(
We need the Hud to change the mojo on this sucker asap!!!
(I’ll take a win, though…)
Hud to the rescue!
Raaddad - May 7, 2010
My glass of pinot keeps getting diluted from all my tears watching this tragedy.
The only thing keeping me from being depressed is my kid and the smile on his face when he looks at me. And of course the Dodgers winning with a walk off grand slam doesn’t help things, i’ve already recieved 7 e-mails from my brother in law rubbing it in (the loon is a Dodgers fan)

rspencer - May 7, 2010
Not any one persons fault - it's everyone's fault.
The pitchers are not pitching, the bullpen isn’t working well, the fielding isn’t working well, they aren’t hitting well either.
I just hope that when they do wake up – they all wake up together. Won’t that be a surprise to the team that gets hit with the winning Angels.
angelsfan7 - May 7, 2010
Kinda like how we got hit with the winning Red Sux
I was looking forward to the Angels at least splitting the series against Boston, based on the fact that the Orioles had just swept them. But I like your attitude and I intend to adopt it. Just don’t wake me if turns out that we’re only dreaming.

The Curse of Chris Perez
We all know the real reason the Angels are freefalling right now. The fault is not the pitching or the fielding or the hitting or the coaching or the managing.
This losing streak fiasco is due to the Curse of Chris Perez. It is no coincidence that the Angels last win was HK’s walk-off bunt. You may recall Chris Perez was upset and expressed that it was a stupid way to win a game. The Angels haven’t won since that game and they should never have angered Perez.
Because Chris Perez is a witch.
And now that damned witch has cursed the Angels. So how does one exorcise this curse? I have (through great personal risk) obtained an ancient verse that dates back hundreds of years. Recitation of this verse can combat the powers of the witch.

Clone Kendry
This evening, Kendry Morales just hit a bases-clearing double into the left-center gap. He is now 2-2 with 6 RBIs with the bases loaded this year. He leads the Angels in every important hitting category. Unfortunately, the team only has one of him.
The management thought Brandon Wood would be the next Morales, but for him, the jump from Triple-A to the majors is larger than the jump from the earth to Messier 87 (about 60 million light years). At least Wood has raised his average from .085 or so to .170 or so, meaning he has hit about .260 the last two weeks. That is respectable for a rookie.
