Lackey Beats Halos, Angel Still Oh-Fer-May.  Halolinks

Pineiro solid, but Angels stifled by Lackey - MLB.com
There was some familiar noise coming from the visitors' dugout. Lackey figured the voice belonged to Jered Weaver. "I heard dugout chirping a little bit," he said, "but it was probably Weav messing with me."  The Angels' offense didn't mess with him much, apart from Wood's one swing and three shots by Howard Kendrick that turned into outs. "It felt good to put a run on the board," Wood said. "We hit balls hard, and they got caught. That's baseball. You've got to think the odds are going to change in our favor pretty soon."  Kendrick had hits taken away by both left-side infielders, Beltre at third base and Marco Scutaro at shortstop, and also smoked a 400-foot out to center in the second inning with two runners aboard. "That's the way it's been going for us," Kendrick said, shrugging.  "The way we're going everyone looks like Cy Young," Hunter said.

I wonder if Weaver's "chirping" contained anything about Lackey being a horse-faced bitch?  Probably not.  Anyway, here's some video from last night's embarrassment...Halos nearly turn three, settle for two - I thought this was a triple play as it looked like Beltre stepped on Morales' foot instead of first base.  And then there's Matsui's throw home to get Marco Scutaro...Matsui throws Scutaro out at the plate - Kind of a cool looking play.

Angels-Red Sox Preview 5/6/10 - FOX Sports on MSN
Kazmir is 8-7 with a 3.59 ERA in 23 starts against the Red Sox and is coming off his best outing of the season. He allowed two runs and struck out seven in six innings while not receiving a decision in a 3-2 loss to Detroit on Saturday. Kazmir had a 7.20 ERA through his first three outings. Boston will counter with Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-1, 11.57), who had a tough season debut, giving up seven runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings of a 12-9 loss to Baltimore on Saturday night. The right-hander spent all of April on the disabled list with a neck strain. Matsuzaka is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts against the Angels. Los Angeles continues to struggle at the plate, scoring two runs or fewer in four of its last five games. The Angels were held to a season-low two hits Wednesday, getting a solo homer from No. 9 hitter Brandon Wood.

This is the first time in Angels history they have gone winless the first 5 games of May.

Reagins: Angels are not going to panic - The Orange County Register
"We're searching to find the continuity we need and some consistency," Angels GM Tony Reagins said by phone Wednesday before his team went out and lost their season-high sixth consecutive game, their longest losing streak since April 2007. "But we know we have talented players. We know what they're capable of. We're confident they're going to be what we need them to be. It's a long season. We're not pushing any panic buttons."

Making a move to improve the club is considered pushing a panic button?  Isn't it the job of the general manager to improve their team?  I wish I could sit back at my job and say "I don't have to do anything, I believe things will take care of themselves."

Juan Rivera's non-catch gets assessed - latimes.com
Manager Mike Scioscia said before Wednesday night's game that he still hadn't watched a replay of Hermida's hit, but Ron Roenicke, the bench coach who handles the outfielders, did. And what was the verdict? It was a hung jury in the mind of Roenicke, who said Rivera could have caught the ball, but he wasn't sure he should have caught it.

Here's some more double-speak, or whatever the Angels call it.  Roenicke says Rivera could have caught the ball, but not sure if he should have caught it.  I call bullshit.  If Rivera could have caught the ball, he should have.  He should catch every ball that comes his way.  The only balls hit to left field Rivera shouldn't catch are the ones that leave the park.

Milton Bradley asks Seattle Mariners for emotional help -  FOX Sports on MSN
Milton Bradley, baseball's self-described bad guy, has asked his Seattle Mariners for help in dealing with what manager Don Wakamatsu says is "emotional stress'' from personal issues. Wakamatsu and general manager Jack Zduriencik said Wednesday that their fiery slugger is out indefinitely until he receives an outside assessment and a plan to address his issues. "It's come to a head,'' Zduriencik said. Several Mariners players described his mind set Tuesday night as "not good.''

In all honesty, I feel bad for Bradley.  Sort of.  A little.

Alabama gamer pitches his way to a million dollars - Plugged In - Yahoo! Games
It's the Holy Grail for pitchers, earning them a one-way ticket to sports immortality and a permanent spot in the history books. But for 24-year-old Wade McGilberry, there was a more, uh, practical motivation: $1 million, which is exactly how much the Alabama man just won for throwing a perfect game in MLB 2K10 for the Xbox 360 and PS3. "It was actually my wife who convinced me to go for it," he said in a statement. "I never thought I'd actually win a million dollars playing a video game, it's all still sinking in for me."

This might be the first time in history a video game player gets laid because he was playing a video game.

Senators honor Bobby Cox with cake in need of copy edit - Big League Stew - Yahoo! Sports
It appears the cake got the John Bobbitt treatment before photogs could document the snafu and the host politicians quickly and predictably passed the buck for the mistake.

Here's what the cake looked like before being circumcised.  It's probably a good thing Cox's name isn't Pusey, Faukus, Feltersnatch, or Napoli.

1983 - At Tiger Stadium, the California Angels defeat Detroit, 4 - 2, as Rod Carew goes 3-for-4 to raise his batting average to .500 (48-for 96). The Angels' first baseman will finish the season at .339, second best in the American League as Wade Boggs of the Red Sox leads the league with a .361 pace.

“This might be the first time in history a video game player gets laid because he was playing a video game.”

Maybe in Alabama that’d be true. You should check out South Korea and Starcraft.

Look

Im tired of everyone saying its still early and this n that. Cmon this team is a playoff type team, how the hell are they playing like a minor league team. to me the main problem is lack of effort. they are playing like they dont care like there not interested especially the defense and offense. all i see is ground balls. its getting very frustrating to see this team play. i just hope some how some way they start turning things around if not its gonna be along losing season.

Were you sent here by Lookout Landing to depress us?

because you’re doing a stand-up job.

(applauds)

Yes, well played, Mr Drizzle darkness and rain.

I am seeing what you are seeing as well

So to me the question is, how much longer is the A.L. Manager of the Year going to put up with it.

The Angels effort must be equal to that of Bruce Bochte

Just LOOK at the expression on his face! If that isn’t effort, I don’t know what is.

If the season ended right now

The following hitters will have posted the WORST seasons of their careers:

Bobby Abreu
Hideki Matsui
Juan Rivera
Mike Napoli
Howie Kendrick

stats

So if each of the above players does in fact go on to have the worst season of his career in 2010, then yes, the Angels are in trouble.

Well for Abreu and Matsui, isn't that expected?

I know Abreu’s numbers have trended down the last few years and thought Matsui’s did too. That’s what old outfielders not on PEDS do.

The drop offs so far for Abreu and Matsui go above and beyond age-related decline

Abreu
2010 Actual: .257/.317/.442
2010 CHONE: .273/.368/.415

Matsui
2010 Actual: .243/.311/.411
2010 CHONE: .264/.351/.437

While a decline in power is a valid assumption given their respective ages, the skillset of a decent OBP is a reasonable expectation. So far, both have performed poorly in that category.

(All the stat stuff, including CHONE projections, at www.fangraphs.com)

Yeah I get that.

If the season ended today they would have had their worst seasons by far. But even if they played to the level expected, they still would have their worst seasons noninjury seasons or close to it.

On the topic of old player performance

Reggie Jackson’s first two seasons with the Angels:

Age 36: 1982: .275/.375/.532 39 HRs (tied for the AL lead in HRs. OPS+ of 147 was 6th best in the AL)
Age 37: 1983: .194/.290/.340 14 HRs (OPS+ 74)

Hope for the best but expect the worst: Reggie managed to do both.

Let's hope Abreu and Matsui don't experience a drop like that. Wow.
The 1st Round and Comp Round of this year's draft make me smile already
RE: "He (Rivera) should catch every ball that comes his way."

Even the Red Sox left fielder “nearly” misplayed a ball last night. It seems that there is poor lighting or lighting along 1B side that can get in your eyes as you are playing in left.

Fenway needs to go IMO

It’s weird dimensions and quirks have no place in modern baseball. It can’t even hold 40,000 people (pretty easy to sell that out).

I don’t say this because the Red Sox play there, I would say it if the Orioles, Padres, or anyone else played there as well. MLB parks should all be of roughly the same dimensions and roughly the same basic shape in the outfield. I know it’s hard to get things built in Boston, but the Fens is past it’s time.

Agreed.

If it was our stadium, I’d even be calling for the wrecking ball.

Nope
MLB parks should all be of roughly the same dimensions and roughly the same basic shape in the outfield.

That has been—and should always be—one of the things which makes baseball special, compared to other team sports in the US. The ivy walls of Wrigley, Tal’s Hill in MinuteMaid Park, The Monster…the very fact that each park has its own identity, quirks, strengths and weaknesses means that there is variety and strategy for each stadium. For that matter, team ownership can even move the fences in or out in many of the parks.

The day baseball insists on McStadiums and standadizes the dimensions of the OF walls is the day the sport begins to die.

How about a limit on the quirkiness?

Fenway is a wack job.

Exactly.

There’s quirks… and there’s Boston.

Fenway is an extreme outlier though

I’m fine with some variation in shape and wall height, but this is just ridiculous. Any other field has a fairly similar diamond shape to it. then there’s Fenway. The first time I saw an outline of it back in the 90’s, I was like “WTF is that? What’s wrong with it?” I still shake my head when I look at it in Gameday sometimes. Flyballs that are outs on most high school fields become doubles because of the Monster or HR’s because of Pesky’s Pole.

Really? That offends you?
It’s weird dimensions and quirks have no place in modern baseball. It can’t even hold 40,000 people (pretty easy to sell that out).

Then its a good thing you didn’t live in an era which would have allowed ball in a place like the Polo Grounds in NY, home to the NY Giants. CF was 450 feet away, so far away that there was a flower bed in the deepest part of center for years. If you think the jai lai wall in Boston is an abomination, how about hitting a 430 ft drive for a long fly ball out?

Even more ridiculous was the old Tigers Stadium, which had a CF of 467 ft, but was 345 ft—over 100 feet closer—in LF.

Sportsman Park, the home of the old ST Louis Browns and Cardinals, had a RF of 310 ft.

Much like the Monster, the Dodgers played in the LA Coliseum with a 60 ft fence between the LF foul pole and CF because that fence was 250 feet from home plate.

Quirky, unusual and makeshift designs are at the heart of the history of baseball. The true abominations have been the cookie-cutter parks like Riverfront Stadium, Three Rivers, the Astrodome, Kaufman Stadium, the Kingdome, the Metrodome, Candlestick…parks with perfect symmetry in dimension from foul pole to foul pole, often with artificial playing surfaces providing “perfect” visual appeal, regardless of the weather. It was suburban master planning run amok, building soulless structures for the game.

Whereas a stadium like Ebbets Field could have a LF of 415 ft, a CF of 450 ft but a RF of 300 ft , the parks listed above were palindromes.

As far as having a capacity under 40,000—who established that as an arbitrary threshold of required seating capacity?—the new Target Field is under 40,000, and the proposed new stadia for the Rays, Marlins and As are anywhere from 34,000 to 37,000 in capacity. Scarcity creates (ticket) value, and smaller parks allow for the fans to be closer to the game and be louder to energize the team.

If you want to hate the Sox, hate the Sox. But let’s keep baseball as it was in the past, a sport which encouraged individualism in a sporting world which enforces conformity.

Get off George's lawn!
heart of the history of baseball.

Respectable, but “the good old days” aren’t always good. Let’s move on. Demo Fenway. Now.

Did I sound cranky?

Silly me. I thought it was cranky to insist upon the demolition of buildings for no more valid reason than they offend me.

Learn something new every day, I suppose…

The quirkiness of Fenway is excessive...

Why not build a new stadium with wacky walls and corners with overall dims that fit a mold of a regular ball park.

Instead we live with a stadium that has a street dictating how the field is shaped?

No, you were not cranky, I just pictured an old man gloating about how great the old days were and how shitty everything is now … I naturally went straight to the “get off my lawn” meme. Sorry.

I'm not that old

My kids would tell you otherwise, but that’s not the point.

I wasn’t going on about how great the “old days” were, but about how important it is to defend baseball’s traditions. One of those is the idea that a stadium can be of irregular dimensions, so long as the bases are 90 feet apart from one another.

Some have almost no foul area. Others, like NA Park on Oakland, could subdivide the foul area and house about 3 dozen families. Some have tight dimensions and others are spacious, and some even combine both attributes.

Football, Hockey, Basketball, Soccer, Curling…all the other major sports have codified dimensions to the playing area. No deviation from the norm. Standards are a wonderful thing, but the freedom to create a playing area afforded in baseball is one the wonderful things about it.

So Fenway has the Monster. So what? It is a reminder of one of those aspects of the sport that I love. We have to respect tradition.

(waves white flag)

I will never have the last word in this conversation.

Demolish Fenway, simply because it would piss of the four-letter-network and the Pink Hat Brigade.

I’d be sorry for the long-time Sux fans, but hey, collateral damage happens.

Amen, George

I think it’s a fair argument that if all the parks were the same, then statistically there would be a more “even” playing field — literally. But the different shapes and angles in the outfield, or a building road that’s in the way — those are all fun personality quirks that make different parks unique. Should the parks then have the same batter’s eye? The same lighting? The same groundskeepers, so that the grass is identical for a consistent field?

We have enough malls and cookie-cutter restaurants and buildings in this country. Do we have to tear them all down so everything will look the same?

This was called a strike by the Ump. Personally, I don't see any bias.

Photobucket

I heard that the Morales' ball 4 (actually strike 2) was even worse
Here it is

...and in case you think it is camera angle

This was pathetic and embarrassing. I had to take a “time out” after this BS…

I can't understand how anyone could panic.

There’s that saying that championships aren’t won in april and may but they can certainly be lost… I believe that is true but in the case of the al west, I highly doubt anyone is gonna start running away with a lead. There is just too many glaring holes on every team. Most of which is offense.

The angels (minus the starters)are just playing like shit right now. There are no major injuries, the rest of the division sucks and there’s a lot more baseball to be played. I really think we are just seeing the worst of it right now, I hope…

(minus the starters)

“Blow” Squanders says, “HELLO!”

:)

yeah disregard that part... kazmir sucks too.
Quote from Mr. Reagins:

“Guys that are having some struggles for us are guys who have performed at a high level in the past,” Reagins said. “The guys that are in Triple-A are still working on their games. I don’t know if it’s such an improvement if you start shipping guys out.
I’m not concerned. A lot of things haven’t gone the way we projected them to but we have confidence our players will turn it around. … We know we’re better than we’re showing.”

I don’t see this as blatant inaction. Just an organization that’s confident with the tools they have on hand. We’re in last place in the AL west and 3 games out. The average in baseball for a last place as of this morning is 8 games. I’ve seen these guys win games so I know they can do it.
Do we really think that shipping a few guys to salt lake or trading half our starting lineup is going to turn this slump around? For all I know it might. But I’d rather see us start to win with the team that took the field game 1. IMHO.

Would anything be different if someone in our division was 20-7 and we were 9 games out?
"It doesn't say 'Cox"...

…until I say it tastes like Cox"

~Dewey Cox, in a rejected ad for “Cox Sausage”
(Walk Hard)

This is not really fair
Making a move to improve the club is considered pushing a panic button? Isn’t it the job of the general manager to improve their team? I wish I could sit back at my job and say "I don’t have to do anything, I believe things will take care of themselves.

Jack Z has been quoted as saying that no one is trading right now, also name one impact player that was traded the first week of May. Reagins is not exactly sitting on his thumb.

Byrnes was let go...

;)

Elementary School Assembly Speaker Milton Bradley

I wonder what kind of anger management advice the “Kanye West of baseball” was giving these kids yesterday?

I am a big-time Milton disliker (hater is a bit strong)

but, I heard that this was quite a heartfelt moment for the guy and may have been the “straw that broke the camel’s back” for him in seeking the team’s help. I sure hope he can turn around his life, THIS TIME. I don’t give a rats ass about your baseball career, just become a better human being, Milton.

The guy has been a dick for years

but he’s a human being with personal issues that he needs to work out. I wish him well.

+1

I read what he was telling these kids. Heartfelt indeed. I too hope he gets his act together. He really does need help, and the first step is asking for it.

...And now I got my wish, 'cuz I know that I'ma gay fish (gay fish, gay fish, gay fish)

speaking of gay...

Granted not every cretin who runs out onto the field at Citizen’s Bank Park during a game is trying to make a fashion statement, but did anybody else notice something a little queer about this Phillies fan’s choice of pants?

Maybe that's what Werth is asking him about.

Those pants almost look like something Fat Mike from NOFX would wear.

Today

Is the one-week anniversary of the last time the Angels won a baseball game. Losing tonight would make seven in a row, which has only happened twice under Mike Scioscia, both times in 2001. This shit happens all the time to other teams, but we’ve really been quite spoiled. The Angels haven’t even lost five in a row during the last two seasons.

Losing 7 in a row would not be optimal.
Hey rev have u ever considered making a "halos heaven" app for the iPhone or something?

Brandon Wood stats for last 11 games...just sayin'

.314/.314/.514; 1 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 11 K’s

Not always great looking AB’s and a hit with the bases loaded yesterday would have been awesome, but not bad for a #9 hitter in any lineup.

LINKIE

Kendry Morales in those same 11 games:
.317/.356/.390; 0 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI

(I’ve been wondering why Maicer has been playing so little…not necessarily at 3b. I also find it interesting that our boy king Gazoo/Maicer has been hurting. He hasn’t played enough to be hurt…whassup with that?)

Not so mighty mouse...

he is made of glass, that fella.

Wood needs to start drawing walks

He seems to think he has to swing at everything.

That's always been his biggest knock
Taking Pitches

I haven’t watched the games on this road trip for the most part (early starts + losing by the time I get home = why bother?), but during the homestand I noticed he was taking a lot of pitches, often even taking 2 strikes. I’d like to see a chart of pitches he has seen. How many times has he swung at pitches out of the strike zone? I wonder, because I suspect at this point that most pitchers aren’t really worried about him so they’re throwing him strikes, figuring he’s going to make an out anyway. It’s hard to walk (particularly if you’re not a Yankees star) unless you get 4 pitches out of the zone in any given at-bat.

He has swung at some awful pitches, yesterday included

It seems like he’s made up his mind to swing before the pitcher has even decided what to throw him sometimes. I know what you’re saying about pitchers not being afraid to pound the zone with him, but even when he does get a bad pitch, it seems he swings at them 3/4 the time without hesitating or altering his approach. I don’t have any numbers but I watch on mlb.tv very frequently and this seems like an obvious pattern to me.

He's tipping his swings.
he doesn't HAVE to swing -- he WANTS to

And that’s because he’s so BAFFLED at the plate, imo.

I think it's him trying to play 3b and making that longer throw, more strain on the shoulder
Angel games on my cell phone--Need help with this please

I am trying to get access to angel games on the radio via my cellphone—
what are my options?
(I can’t find the comments by some of you previously about this)

mlb.com at bat 2010

you can get it from BlackBerry App World, iTunes or mlb.com itself — it costs about $15 and definitely worth it.

Yeah, I agree.

I have the MLB GameDay Audio subscription to be able to listen to games online, but I still find that I usually listen via my phone since I don’t miss anything when I walk away from my computer.

The only downside is the ~1 minute delay while the data travels through all the compression and servers and cell towers and whatnot to get to me, it means that if I want to follow the game on HH at the same time I either have everything spoiled “before it happens” or just try to stay a minute or two behind on the gameday thread (which is what I usually do). When people predict “I bet Wood hits a grand slam here” and then after he strikes out someone goes up and replies “Well, that sucked” then I end up getting spoiled anyway. Except that of course I knew Brandon wasn’t going to hit a grand slam.

I should mention the upside is that if I am listening on my phone and get in my car, I can just wait for a commercial break to turn off my phone and turn on the radio and it’s like fast forwarding through the commercials.

Of course, when I get out of my car and start to listen on the radio again it’s deja vu all over again.

What cell phone do you have?
Thanks guys--that's what I'm working on today--a new phone

It won’t be the Blackberry I don’t believe, but I’m looking at a deal on the “Sideflip” I think it’s called…Can I get that AP (mlb.com at bat 2010) for other phones beside the iPhone or Blackberry?

be able to run an AP like that on it; and the least expensive option.
