The Downside of Five, John Lackey? Whatever.  Halolinks

Red Sox 5, Angels 1 -  FOX Sports on MSN
The Angels have started a 10-game road trip with five straight losses. One night after they gave up 17 runs in the series opener, Ervin Santana quieted the Red Sox bats, allowing just one run in seven innings but earning his third straight no-decision. After he left, Boston scored four runs off Kevin Jepsen (0-1) to turn a tie game into a 5-1 blowout. ``(Santana) had to match Lester pitch for pitch, and he did,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ``We had some opportunities and Lester minimized the damage on their end. Obviously, getting out of the eighth was big for those guys.'' Jepsen gave up four runs on two hits and three walks while getting just two outs in the eighth. Mike Napoli had three of the Angels' five hits.

Should Juan Rivera have caught this ball?  You be the judge: Hermida's double gives the Red Sox the lead.  Although Jepsen's poor performance had the most impact on last night's game, this play was the game-breaker.  At least Rivera could've made an attempt at catching it, and just maybe he would've looked like this:  Hunter turns both ways then makes the catch - Video - MLB.com

Angels-Red Sox Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
Lackey has been solid but not dominant thus far in Boston. The right-hander has yielded three runs or fewer in four of his five starts, but opponents are hitting .307 off him. He limited the Orioles to three runs - two earned - in seven innings Friday, but failed to earn a decision as the Red Sox lost 5-4 in 10 innings. Boston will also take its hacks against a former teammate, albeit not one who made a major impact during his Red Sox tenure. Joel Pineiro (2-3, 5.76) posted a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for Boston in 2007, eventually getting traded to St. Louis for a minor leaguer. After a promising beginning for the Angels, Pineiro has given up 16 runs and 21 hits over 9 1-3 innings in his last two starts. He surrendered a career-high 10 runs in 3 1-3 innings of Friday's 10-6 loss at Detroit. Pineiro is 3-5 with a 6.24 ERA in 10 starts against the Red Sox. David Ortiz is 9 for 23 with two homers and three doubles off Pineiro, but the former All-Star slugger increasingly appears close to the end of the line in Boston.

I'm pumped up for this game for two reason; 1)  Obviously because of the Lackey connection, but 2) I like Pineiro and a good outing against the Sox and Lackey will go a long way in righting this sinking Angels ship.  I know it's one of those clubhouse chemistry things that most saber-heads scoff at, but I believe in some of that stuff.

Lackey to take center stage vs. Halos - angelsbaseball.com
The Angels played behind Lackey enough to know what type of competitor they will face on Wednesday. "He's a bulldog -- you know he'll be up for it," said Angels center fielder Torii Hunter. "That's his nature. He loves to compete, and so do I. I've faced him a lot. So have Bobby [Abreu], [Hideki] Matsui. For other guys, like Mike Napoli, it's going to be different. He used to catch the guy, and now he'll be trying to hit him." Napoli doesn't plan on feeling any sentimentality when he stands in against the guy he used to call pitches for. "We're not friends now," Napoli said. "He's on the other side. I'm going to try to get him." Has Lackey noticed the difference in public circles from pitching for the Red Sox as opposed to the Angels? "People are more apt to come up to you in Boston," said Lackey. "In L.A., they see actors and stuff -- they don't care about baseball players."

"they don't care about baseball players"?  What a douche nozzle.  Could it be that the fans in SoCal show a bit more respect for other people's privacy?  How often did someone in OC puke on your wife's coat?  Yeah, I thought so.

Fan films Andrew McCutchen homer from the bat into his glove - Big League Stew -  Yahoo! Sports
But upon closer inspection, holy smokes! That same guy from that '08 video was out at Dodger Stadium over the weekend and he not only caught a batting practice home run from Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen(notes) but also his first-inning blast during the actual game. All while holding a video camera and filming the catches from his perspective. Oh, and if you doubt the authenticity of this clip for any reason, check out the highlight on MLB.com, which shows McCutchen's homer and the catch from the opposite angle.

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.  And done by a Dodgers fan none-the-less.

Falling Angels - FanGraphs Baseball
To date, all of that has manifest itself on the field. The corner outfield rotation of Bobby Abreu, Juan Rivera, and Hideki Matsui have failed to make plays, costing their flyball pitching staff outs and allowing opponents to put runs on the board.

I considered doing a FJM-type rebuttal to this Dave Cameron article based on the above clip.  I mean, there are a lot of things going wrong for the Angels right now, but corner outfield defense isn't one of them...until Rivera's dandy play last night.

Milton Bradley unhappy in Seattle Mariners' cleanup spot - ESPN
Multiple Mariners said Bradley's mindset late Tuesday night was "not good," though Wakamatsu deflected thoughts of an incident with a fiery former All-Star who is on his eighth team in 10 seasons. "We just felt at that time, what went on with the two strikeouts, it was time to get him out of the ballgame," Wakamatsu said following the 5-2 loss. "It was just time to get him out." How bad have Seattle's fans soured on the Mariners' offense? The crowd of 14,589 -- the second-lowest in Safeco Field's 10-year history -- booed after Griffey, their 40-year-old civic icon, swung over a pitch from Shields that skimmed the dirt. That ended the "rally" in the sixth and kept the home team down 3-1.

I'm not one to look at other's misfortune to make myself feel better, but in this cause I'll make an exception.

Johnny Damon fitting well with Tigers - FOX Sports on MSN
When the Tigers returned from their latest road trip, a gift was waiting in each player’s locker. It was a cross between a baseball jersey and a bathrobe, like something Hugh Hefner would wear to take batting practice. Olde English D on the front. Name and number on the back. Plush cotton from head to toe. The official attire of a big-league badass. Naturally, this was the work of Johnny Damon. After Damon’s new teammates told him how much they admired the fluffy frock, he made a gesture that befits a man of his financial/personal cachet. He bought one for everybody. "It’ll be like the Ritz-Carlton around here," Dontrelle Willis said. When a teammate asked to pay for his share, Damon refused. His treat.

The only reason this link is here is so I can say, "I told you so".  Noodle arm?  Ask Matsui about that (yeah, I realize it's Hideki Matsui, but still).  Not clutch?  I think Scot Shields may disagree (yeah, I realize it's Scot Shields, but still).

Taser 'em again, Cardinals pitcher Wainwright says, after another fan runs onto field - USATODAY.com
"That was tired, that was bad,'' Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright said. "You know what, the Phillies' fans should be mad at that guy because he might've gotten in the way of Cole's mojo he had going. That's terrible timing. And if you don't want to get Tased, don't go on the field. There's absolutely nothing wrong with getting Tased if you're on the field."

Hey you kids, get off my lawn!

You know what time it is?  It's awesome-o'clock!

Here's the original...I'm John Lackey!

John Lackey says Angels can't have it both ways - latimes.com
"You're supposed to give up for the team; then when it comes time, they might not want to give it up for you. But I was prepared for that. That's the nature of the game today.""Their track record speaks for itself," Lackey said. "I lost so many teammates over there, guys who went to other places. It prepares you for these things."  But doesn't Lackey, who prided himself on being the "lead dog in the rotation," as Angels Manager Mike Scioscia called him, miss that label? "Whatever, (lookie here, I'm John Lackey!)" Lackey said. "I know what I am (John Lackey!). What matters is being in the playoffs and pitching in meaningful games."

Whatever.

If we never win another game...

just beat Lackey tonight. Please God, oh please.

Ack! That means the Angels would end up 13-149 this year.

I’ll be more upset if the Angels laying down for Boston gives the Sux their confidence back and they start winning.

But this is the Angels, I call a 2-hit shutout pitched by Lackey (I really hope that prediction is WAY off).

Alright guys time to turn the page on last night

After their consistent piss-poor performance over the past month it’s still gonna be that easy to switch it on huh?

To be honest, I thought Hermida's ball was off the Monster as soon as it was hit

I’m surprised Rivera even got near it, considering he’s never been fast anyway. The game was in Kevin Jepsen’s hands and he threw it away. Had we escaped that inning, it would have been in spite of him, not because of him. It’s that simple.

I would agree if this were a little league game. . . "nice try Jauny, you'll get it nx time!"
BTW Wi, what's your favorite Clancy book?

Didn’t catch your reference at the end there til just now.

I've liked them all

But if I had to choose one, it’d be Red Storm Rising since it was my first and got me hooked.

That's my favorite too

I also liked The Bear and the Dragon and Debt of Honor.

Do you like the one with young jack? :(
Which one is that? I haven't read any Clancy in a really long time.
I can't think of the name right now

jacks son is a big part of the book as well as robbie’s son iwas not happy with it.

Is it a newer one?

The last 1 or 2 he’s written I didn’t bother with because I didn’t even like the synopsis on the inside of the cover. One was Cardinal in the Kremlin and I think there was one more I passed on.

It was "Without Remorse"
Another great book.

The introduction of John Kelly/Mr. Clark.

not the book when jack jr go's to work for an off shoot of the cia
That was "Teeth of the Tiger"

Or something like that

Bingo !

I had said that a few post’s before and i thought you said i was wrong .sorry :(

Another good book co-written with the guy that organized the air campaign for the first Iraq War...

…was titled Every Man a Tiger. Non-fiction…and almost as riveting as the fictional books. The co-writer was Chuck Horton.

All of the books have been good, but...

…my favorite was Executive Orders. My wife gave it to me for Christmas. I had read all 1000+ pages by shortly after New Year’s. I just couldn’t put it down.

I liked Patriot games, but the movie, not the book.

books are stupid

Wow that's to bad!

i find book’s much better then the movie most time’s

Rex's future?!

Here's a better example:

 Wow that’s to bad!

i find book’s much better then the movie most time’s

Correction:

Wow, that’s too bad!
I find books to be much better than their movie counterparts the majority of the time.

pwned.

0 Points - You didn't use a funny picture in your rebuttal

A picture is worth 1,000 words they say.

Well i will not say good luck tonight

But i will say your team is much better then they have played in the last week or so . we have to deal with the team who will not be named after you folks! :(

Nor shall I

I will just be glad to get this portion of our schedule over. Given who we’ve played and how shitty we’ve played them, we should be as far back as you guys. Thankfully, we aren’t and we can now move on to playing our equally-shitty rivals.

How about w.e.b.griffen

any of his are very good as well

I think I've read one...can't remember it though.

Read a little Dan Brown too.

Well i have to get back to my painting the house

Have a good day

A redsox fan being really polite?

what gives here? Thanks to my history of watching tom clancy movies, I suspect #1 is embarking on some espionage.

The "pitching Voltron" made me laugh.
Did anyone hear about the Phillies game?

someone else ran onto the field and the idiot posted it on Twitter before he did it. He was also caught with narcotics. <ahref=“http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jVWvz2-hQ13fad8wtBD8s9lc5ntgD9FGEKH84” target="new">

Land of the Free?

What kind of world is it where you can’t run out onto the field during a major sporting event?!

Gee whizz.

What no Whole boston Team

This morning i was dropping off my daughters mission project and some kid did his 5th grade project on the state of Mass. and it was covered in Red Sux shit. I gave him a dirty look. was that wrong?

yeah

he’s a child still. kid don’t know anything. Now if it was a grown man doing that I might suggest you give him a dirty look.

I disagree, show children no mercy.

Well in all honesty do you think the 5th grader did it?

Or did his dad do the project for the son??that is the case then I say glare and stare all the way to the classroom.

Image hosting by IMGBoot.com

Haha

Foxworthy looks like he is in your Avatar picture too.

The only thing you did wrong was not grab the kid's project, smash it on the ground and stomp all over it while screaming profanities in his face.
after last nights game i should have
Interesting. Milton Bradley left the team mid-game

Milton Bradley left the team last night in the middle of the game. Bradley apparently left after striking out looking in the sixth inning with the bases loaded.

According to a source, Bradley yelled at the umpire from the bench before being told by Don Wakamatsu to cool it. Wakamatsu said that he would handle the umpire himself. Bradley responded that someone had to say something and that if Wak wouldn’t, then he would.

According to the source, a few minutes later Bradley walked back over to the skipper and said,
“I’m packing my stuff. I’m out of here.”
And then he left.

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle

Oh how sweet/inevitable

The fan-proclaimed only middle of the order hitter the Mariners have… imagine having Bradley as your great hope for an offensive turnaround (from having one of the worst hitting teams in the MLB at the moment)…

The sad thing is, he has still yet to prove that last season was just an ‘off’ year, as he has so far struggled like nearly all other Mariner hitters.

Financial Implications

At the time of the Silva/Bradley trade, here is what the players were owed:

Silva
2010: $11.5 million
2011: $11.5 million
2012 buyout: $2 million
Total Obligation: $25 million

Bradley
2010: $9 million
2011: $12 million
Total Obligation: $21 million

As part of the trade the Mariners sent the Cubs $9 million.

In other words the Mariners have committed $30 million to have Bradley on the team.

I can't wait to see how the girls of Lookout Landing are going to spin this one...
Ask and ye shall receive

http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2010/5/5/1459310/on-the-milton-bradley-stuff

Unlike their fans on LL, if the M's have any balls, they're going to suspend him for this
This is an example of why I'm not concerned about the division just yet.
Here's to hoping

that Lackey pitches as well as he did against the Rays (you know that game he got shelled) and that Pineiro pitches as well as he did the first time he faced the Yankee’s or even the first time he faced the Tigers.

All in all, I just want Lackey to get a big giant L tonight.

L for Lackey?

-no idiot lackey is the L Loss Lackey
-oh… so the l in lackey is for loser?
-yes.

L for Lookout Landing?
ill be there tonight

and ill be boo-ing lackey the whole time. im sitting right on third base and ill have hot dogs to throw at him if he comes my way.

JL, be a man.

Just because the Red Sox were willing to pay Lackey what he wasn’t worth doesn’t mean the Angels should have stepped up. His ERA is too high and he’s often hurt. Blow me, Lackey.

I'll Say This

While I have no complaints at all about the Matsui signing, I was also a proponent of adding Johnny Damon to replace Figgins in the leadoff spot.

Damon +1
and Damon has really been kicking our butts lately
Where would you have played him though?
Before

the Matsui signing, I was thinking he’d be in the DH/OF rotation, mostly at DH. That would have precluded signing Matsui, of course. I guess, with the loss of Figgins from the lineup and the anticipated addition of Brandon Wood (power in place of speed/OBP), I was thinking that Damon’s OBP and baserunning (with some occasional pop) would have been a better fit than Matsui. I also was not sold on Aybar as a leadoff hitter, and that hasn’t changed.

Benedict Arnold

“Benedict Arnold was an American general who served the cause of the American Revolution until he decided to shift his allegiance to the British. Born in Connecticut in January 1741, he came from a troubled background, where his family struggled to survive poverty and hardship. Always known as a troublemaking child, he grew to become a prominent figure in the military, where he trained soldiers and planned out attacks.

From an early start as a war hero and patriot, Arnold plotted to turn over the American fort at West Point, New York to British forces during the American Revolution. His plot was unsuccessful and he was driven to escape by sea, under cover of darkness, to Britain, where he was not welcomed with open arms: they, too, distrusted the man who would betray his own country so readily. He died in poverty in Canada in 1801."

Sort of like mr damon haveing to play for the tigers ..........oh wait he always wanted to play there :)
