Final Score in Fenway Park: Red Sox 17, Angels 8
Angels pitching sent out a mayday, defeated so far this May. Starting lefty Joe Saunders was a long way from the All-Star game pitching terrible early, Matt Palmer was awful late, Brian Stokes was terrible and Jason Bulger cleaned up with an inning plus of no-run ball.
If there is a silver lining it is the knowledge that Saunders is the team's worst starting pitcher, that Palmer is not much of an option to mop up anything the team can hope to salvage and that with three more games against the Red Sox we likely just saw their best pitcher, Clay Buchholz.
Any other positives? Uh, like getting out of a postgame thread without mentioning two outs on the basepaths? Oh, you mean like mentioning Kendry Morales had 3 hits in the game? Oh wow, we had a highlight. Go home.

terrible
at least we got our best pitchers coming up (minus weaver)

Whoever this Plamer kid is, I blame him.

Don't you mean
you balme him?
rspencer - May 3, 2010
We were actually kinda in the game when Saunders pitched
so BOTG is Palmer

aarrghh, where ya be, matey?
ladybug - May 3, 2010
I'll vote Torii for BOTG
it’s one thing to get hit around…. but just don’t play stupid.
Torii in the 5th inning played stupid and selfishly. You don’t get CS down 5 runs with nobody out. What a bonehead.
Also can we get another reliever up here for Pete’s sake?
MH252525 - May 3, 2010
^^^ This ^^^
Quad Fin Rider - May 3, 2010
Both are to blame but
I’ll still say Saunders. He just couldn’t keep the Sox to 3 runs. He didn’t execute pitches during critical moments. I say move Saunders down to #4 and put Kazmir in the #2 spot.
phoenix15 - May 3, 2010
as long as they are still both in the rotation does that really matter until October?
MH252525 - May 3, 2010
Put Santana back in as a starter and Saunders for relief. Or for some odd reason, Reckling could come up, take Saunders spot, and pull a K-Rod.
phoenix15 - May 3, 2010
Santana is a starter
Did you mean Palmer? (still not a good idea).
tdischino - May 3, 2010
No in the postseason, instead of Santana being the bullpen guy.
phoenix15 - May 3, 2010
What Postseason?
Rev Halofan - May 3, 2010
PLAYOFFS????

Maybe
the Angels need to bring up Reckling as long relief. The only people I trust in the bullpen are Jepsen and Rodney.
phoenix15 - May 3, 2010
Theres a GREAT idea.
Call-up our biggest pitching prospect to come in and pitch in games we don’t have a chance in. That’ll REALLY build up his psyche.
Seriously though, let the kid get some experience at the higher levels before you throw him into the fire.
b0rd3rline - May 3, 2010
Well, look at K-Rod. Before his postseason starts, he had never played in the Majors, but injuries to the 02 bullpen caused K-Rod to be called up.
phoenix15 - May 3, 2010
But he was always a reliever...
Clutch - May 3, 2010

princeton11loveshalos - May 3, 2010
We should bring Rodney in the 1st of every game
adirondackangelfan - May 3, 2010
lol
(1st inning?)
Raaddad - May 3, 2010
Where to begin...
- Starting pitching isn’t looking too sharp. Where is Saunders?
- Relief pitching – beyond Rodney and Jepsen – isn’t too good either.
- Power Hitting…one HR so far on this road trip, and that was early in Friday’s game.
Napoli and Wood have had almost no offensive impact.
They look tentative, disorganized, and demoralized. This could be a long, long year.
On the positive side, they have left lots of room for improvement.
sothball - May 3, 2010
Continuing "Where to begin":
- Terrible baserunning (our vaunted speed and dash on the basepaths is ancient history now)
- Defense is pretty sub-par, particularly in the outfield and in the catcher’s position
- Team spirit is low—if such a thing can be measured (which it can in a way), we lack any chemistry whatsoever—as has been pointed out previously here
But it’s nothing that a good 5-6 game win streak can’t overcome…;)
Raaddad - May 3, 2010
I have made fanposts in the past on the horrible base-running.
I don’t have numbers to support it, but I don’t believe we are quite as bad as years past. I admit I may be wrong.
What I see is an overall lack of speed or situational speed;
Aybar is fast but doesn’t have a great stolen base record.
Abreu is decent.
Torii seems to have slowed considerably. He may be hiding injuries.
Morales is slow.
Matsui wears shoes of stone.
Rivera wears shoes of lightweight stone.
Howie is fast but – like Aybar – doesn’t seem to translate well to the basepaths.
Napoli might tie Rivera in a foot race.
Wood? Hard to tell until he get’s on base more often. It appears e is somewhere between Aybar and Napoli.
Izzy is also like Aybar and Kendrick…he seems fast but seems to get caught stealing alot (like tonight).
These Angels appear older and slower than I expected. How long before Scioscia starts playing his special version of Whack-a-Mole?
sothball - May 3, 2010
Lack of speed is embarrassing
No SB, 2 CS yesterday against Victor Martinez? Did you see the game 2 weeks ago where VLAD stole two bases off this guy? Stupid to run when you’re 5 runs down anyway but if you can’t run on Martinez, who can you run on?
Time for new horses. I can’t wait for Peter Bourjos to join the team.
RallyMonkey5 - May 4, 2010
Tim Wakefield is pretty easy to run on too though, that definitely contributed to the Rangers stealing so many bases
~MMP~ - May 4, 2010
SUCCESS for the bullpen is giving up 2 runs or less an inning.
Sans jepsen/rodney, I’m ZOMFG shocked if theres a 1,2,3 inning.
clover_black - May 3, 2010
I was there
It was terrible. Going again tomorrow, hoping for something to feel good about.

Well, there was the playoffs last year...
How’d THAT work out for the Sux?!
Also, they’re like 7 games out of 1st already
Raaddad - May 3, 2010

Unreal...
Now FSW is replaying the game….like it wasn’t bad enough the first time! If you need heartburn before bed, just tune in.
You would think the producers or someone in charge would accidentally hit the delete button or something. This game was old school Angel fan torture.
hbhalofan - May 3, 2010
hopefully there's a "we move forward in our broadcast" message

hbhalofan - May 3, 2010
Watching the replay: bottom of 6, Rojas says ...
“Napoli and Palmer need to get on the same page here …” that was after 3 pitches to the first batter. Maybe this was Napoli’s fault? joke

Look at the brightside, at least we haven't had to suffer from those Saunders-Maddux comparisons some morons posted here in the offseason.

this team right now will get sweep by the PIRATES ...
i have no doubt .

DAD OF VLAD - May 3, 2010
it's called.....
trAdition.
I think Arte is onto something here. Perhaps he overspent on getting the All-Star Game, so he couldn’t afford Figgy & Lackey. Or maybe, just maybe somebody up near the top made some bad judgements with our 2010 lineup being able to find a pitching leader, a lead off hitter, and a clubhouse leader. Or maybe, Arte is saving up all his money for Pujols next year. Whatever it is, if the Halos continue playing this crap ball all season, we will be playing the Angels “trAditional” baseball of years past.

The "bright" side
The team has picks 18, 29, 30, 37, 40, 81, 111, 115 and 144 in the 2010 draft. At this rate, we could be looking at a top five pick in the 2011 draft too.
